    Did you know there is an Action-RPG on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive? Find out about it in SuperDerek's LandStalker Review!
    Landstalker, in a word, is really good. Okay so maybe that's 2 words. But you need at least 2 words to describe the game. I mean you could
    also call it very challenging, slightly frustrating, and sadly underappreciated.
    It's an isometric action RPG with heavy platforming and puzzle-solving elements. Climax Entertainment, the games developer, is also famous
    for their work in the Shining Force series. Some members left Climax to form Matrix Software, which worked on well loved RPGs such as the
    Alundra series and Dragon Quest V for the Nintendo DS.
    In Landstalker you play as a blonde forest elf with a sword and a fairy sidekick named Friday. You explore dungeons, solve puzzles, and
    discover weapons, magic and armor that help you complete the dungeons. It's obviously got a lot in common with Zelda games, and that's
    probably not a coincidence. That said, however, the game does have a unique streak to it. Instead of playing as a silent protagonist, you
    play as the hero Nigel, who is a deceptively old treasure hunter, who does speak from time to time.

      unassumption Yep! I just reviewed Alundra not too long ago actually, it was a lot of fun. :)

    • @WorthlessWinner
      @WorthlessWinner 9 лет назад +3

      Great that you enjoyed it.
      You probably wouldn't find the sequel as much fun, given it has the same early 3D graphics of the Grandstream Saga and a cheesier plot, but I'd definitely give it a try too as it's good in it's own (if inferior) right.

    • @Ponaru
      @Ponaru 9 лет назад +1

      unassumption No what you meant to say is "If you enjoyed Alundra then you'll find its sequel an utter disappoint and a pretty mediocre game in general".

    I am very grateful for the review of this game. Yes. It was one of those under appreciated games that were left to wither with time, though it had it’s charms, such as the adult humor and amazing soundtrack. I felt like this game broke the typical “adventurer” image *ahem* *Link*, and provided us with an adventurer with personality. Sure. I love saving Princesses for a living, but this game redefined what adventuring was all about back in the day. The game had also put my patience to the test with the frustrating controls. I, too, wanted to launch my controller to my tv. In the end, I felt this feeling of satisfaction that I had completed a game that exceeded my expectations. Keep up the great work and continue to educate the public about these RPG gems that had been lost though out time 👍

    Part of me still longs for a remake of Landstalker, or for some one to revisit the elemnts this game had, the isometric platformer, with all that puzzle solving & action adventure, all blended into a long story that's not world saving but almost modest to a fault.
    Alundra came pretty close & is also a good game, but being real, I think the day of isometric games didn't last long enough before the 3D games stepped in & it's felt like a lot of these short lived 2D ideas became lost to time.

  • @jfergs.3302
    @jfergs.3302 2 года назад +1

    Haha, memories, I loved this game. And you're spot on, judging those jumps due the isometric layout, that took some getting used. And it could get a little frustrating at times, but persevering, I got there in the end. A great game.

    this was actually one of the first game I owned on my sega genesis I got this game back in 1993 when it came out, but I didn't ever beat this game untill 2002 lol yeah it took me that long to beat the game, I would always replay it over and over. The quest, puzzles, and riddles were really hard for me as a kid but I loved this game haha I still have it and still plays good. I never knew about Legend of Zelda until Ocarina of time came out in 1997, so when I 1st place the legend of zelda it reminded me of Landstalker. I always thought Landstalker should be remade it was such an awesome game and still is

    Yeah, this game is a drop of water in the proverbial RPG Desert that is the Sega Genesis! But there's some other games for it that I'm thinking about covering. Only question is if I want to stick to the 16-Bit era, or spread my wings a bit and explore some 3D environments. :)

    Thanks for this work you put on presenting these games. It really feeds my video game culture and sometimes blows me away.
    The Breath of Fire 3 and 4 were very interesting to discover, especially for the graphic engine they featured. Very intersting. They got me thinking about Little Big Adventure 2. Do you know that game ?
    I don't think I would collect or even play these games but I see your work as huge and great material to widen creativity and imagination of what can be done and has been done. These are art, and worth considering.
    Thanks to you for this.

    If you watch a little show called Classic Game Room, they go back and forth between the latest games and the oldies, which I like. Staying with 16bit and slowly moving up from there limits your range of what you can review, so I think it's best to do what you feel like getting out there while it's fresh in your mind, no matter what era or console it's on. Nice review, btw, and the tip to use that different controller was helpful, since I dreaded the game once I saw the platforming.

    I have yet to play this game, but I've been interested in it since I heard about it being a spiritual successor to Alundra, a game I rented a lot as a kid. And that's another game I need to actually pick up and own for myself sometime. :P Haha. But serious, I think that the Genesis needed more RPG goodness. Glad to see that this is one worthy of the Game Collection. ;)

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  9 лет назад +1

      Absolutely. Yeah, I think that Alundra was sort of a spiritual successor to LandStalker, and I've also been looking to play that game as well. The Genesis really is lacking in RPG selection, but I'm trying to see if I can find some more to add to The Game Collection. It's been a while since I reviewed a Genesis game, maybe I ought to make a point of it soon.

    Which game is better, Alundra or Land Stalker?

    • @David_Alvarez77
      @David_Alvarez77 2 года назад

      I'd say that Alundra overall is a better game. The story in Landstalker is serviceable but pretty basic, but the one in Alundra is great and really pulls you in. Landstalker's characters are are a bit meh, but Alundra has some pretty good ones. The world of Landstalker is okay, not bad, but Alundra's world has so much more depth. Both are difficult and can be frustrating at times, though perhaps Alundra is more so. Still, I think the pay off for Alundra is better.

    Meh, this game is below mediocre and slightly above sucking. A good Adventure/RPG needs a solid epic story. At no point in the game do you ever get a feeling of conquest. The music is crap and offers nothing toward an epic adventure/rpg. The graphics are as simple as graphics get on the system. Hardly any animation at all in this game. I only played through it because of all the praise I heard about it. What a disappointment.
