EvanM. 777 but then you have to have the software to run it. And if you update old machines, you are making changes that might be problematic. But I totally get physical copies. You can always run emulation
Ahhh a fellow Physical Gamer of Culture, I have imported games such as Mother 3 (Jap/Eng), Final Fantasy X/X-2 both games on one cartridge, and I’m doing it for Collection of Mana on Switch.
To explain the NTSC/PAL problem more deeply: Back in the day, the consoles had no real clock, the only way to time animations etc. were to count the FPS. PAL has 50 FPS and NTSC 60, that means that the time between one frame, one time unit, is longer, so everything is slower.
Jan Opd That is correct, though even if slightly slower PAL was far more better format overall. NTSC was know from some glitches as it was slightly older format. PAL was designed to avoid those.
***** And we should also remind that slowdown was caused by lack of proper adaptation. Not that 25 frames instead 30 make big difference for eye. Also PAL has resolution of 768x576 when NTSC 720x480.
i am part of the rest of the world and i don't care about us president, he is not the savior and satan neither; us is not the world s bellybutton. there are no continues sounds scarier.
hijacking this top comment to correct information about The Wily Wars that has changed since upload - the game has been officially re-produced by Retro-Bit, was included on the Sega Genesis Mini console, and is in the Nintendo Switch Online service. this is still rather limited (2 of those are likely out of print products, and while Switch Online works for now, it's expensive and who knows what will happen to it in 10 years time), but it's better than what was around at the time of this video's upload.
Unmodified PAL games will only play slower on PAL systems running at 50Hz. So if you imported the European version and played in on your sweet-ass 16-bit Sega Genesis Video Entertainment System at 59.94Hz (actually closer to 59.87Hz I think) , it'd run at the same speed as Wiley Wars JP or US version. The ones who really suffer are the European gamers. To my knowledge the Mega Man games on the European NES also are not optimized for PAL speeds (I could be wrong though). Also this game runs only at 30 frames per second giving you an extra frame of lag that shouldn't be there and also the illusion that it runs slower than it does. And the control... oh god. It's basically harder to get Mega Man to start moving. If you tap the controller he'll nudge left or right instead of start running. It does this on the NES as well but I think this issue is exacerbated here by the slower frame rate. This is what happens when you farm out development to a shittier team (I'm looking at you Saturn Symphony of the Night!)
***** You have no idea how much I'm looking forward to that. I've barely been able to find anything on those 3 games, and I really want to learn more about them.

This game will be included in the Sega genesis mini.in years this game couldn't be played but thankfully Sega gave us a chance to play it with the mini.
The slowness "in general" can also be attributed to delays in actions present in all releases. I played through the Japanese release and noticed small things like Mega Man taking much longer than the NES version of Mega Man 3 to teleport out of a stage after acquiring a weapon, even though there's no intense action on-screen. In Mega Man on Game Gear, there is actually a way to make the screen scroll while standing in place. You hold the jump button for a couple seconds and the d-pad will make the screen move around instead of move Mega Man, allowing you to see what's below you.
I know right.. I remember getting the TurboGraphix Christmas of 91, of course I was the only out of all my friends that had it so I would get teased and left out of any videogame conversation because I had what everybody else didn't or wanted. Once I got that cd add on and bought Street Fighter, I was the MAN..I also had Splatterhouse.. Wonder what happen to Splatterhouse??? I feel that it deserve a remake.. I really want to know the history behind that console-What made them design it like that, why were the games shape like a card, and why did it fail.
Larry I was in the same boat as you when I first got my Turbo Graphix 16 as well. But later friends sold there Sega genies to buy one especially since Nintrndo was king and we all owned on then two!
I dunno i'll just grab a ROM, i mean the original developers won't get paid either way, so why pay it to some jerk that sells it for hundreds of dollars??
I don't think emulate in a games wrong if they're no longer selling it in the store. How else are you supposed to get it. But I think of it if they're available for sale and the Creator has the option to make money off it can we should pay for it if we'd like it that much. But most games that are emulated are older ones as far as I know.
Some people hate on emulation not because they hate piracy. They are just elitists who think that original hardware is the only *TRUE* way to play old games and people who play games in emulators aren't *REAL* retrogamers.
pikistikman because there isn’t an official ntsc provided by the company. I mean, nowadays it’s on the genesis mini but after hoe many years? This also raised the question about game preservation. When companies don’t care for their old library of games and and don’t mind about preserving games for future generations that’s when this options appear (albeit illegal) but oh well.
Original game has passwords that help you save your progress in the games. The compilation has a save feature -- BUT, since Sega deleted you downloads, that meant they deleted your saves as well... I.E in this case it would have been better if the game had been using passwords instead.
This is awesome content at it's finest! I never got into Megaman as a kid. This might be a great starting point for me to get into the series! Great job here!
This was a good review and I wish I would have seen it before doing my run of the game at SGDQ last year as there was a few things mentioned that I didn't know. I lobby to get this game on the virtual console as it would help remove the lag as if you played the game on a Sega Genesis overclocked from 7mhz to 10 or above, it would eliminate the lag entirely. I believe this is the definitive way to enjoy this great title. Not being released in physical form was a tremendous fail by Capcom.
You could've also mentioned Megaman 8, X3 and X4 which came out on the Sega Saturn and are considered (for the most part) the superior versions to their Playstation counterparts.
Megaman 8 (and a little of X4 since PS1 still great and the most popular one) yeah i agree but X3 is the worst one in comparation of the SNES version the worst thing is the soundtrack
Hy there : ) good old times to remember! I like Gaming History and i was enjoying my part back then. My school friend had this game on his Mega Drive. First time i played it i was shocked by the fact that it runs so bad. I was collecting and Buying Gaming Magazines(i still have a lot of Magazines) and in one of them they offer a trick to get Mega Man a speed up boost. I do not remember all, but what i know is that we overclocked the Mega Drive! Voila you have a fine running Mega Man game on a Sega Console! So much great games and systems to remember and enjoy again and again! Never gets old its timeless gaming fun!!! I liked the fact that Sega gets a version of Mega Man. Thank you for this nostalgic Gaming Historian video
Love yer intro animation, respect the lack of begginf for likes/subscribes or sticking an ad into that, and the video itself was top notch. Rock on man, I will be watching for your videos now
This is my favorite way to play the first 3 games. I grew up with them on NES in the 80's and early 90's, so the control took a little getting used to. But the graphics and sound are far superior to the NES versions. Never before have I used the "sound test" in the options menu so much... it's how I learned to play the music from first 3 games on my guitar!
Making Megaman: The Wily Wars a SEGA Channel Exclusive was a grave mistake Capcom and SEGA has ever done. It would of sold well in 1994. Thank goddness we're able to play this gem not only on the Genesis Mini, but also on Nintendo Switch Online Genesis. Oh and there also a physical release too.
E.M.U.L.A.T.I.O.N No, it's not taboo. No, it's no less authentic. Yes, it's fucking incredible. Pretenting that it doesn't exist and it's still 1993 is fucking annoying.
Actually, emulators sometimes are less authentic. Some emulators are pretty inaccurate, such as ZSNES. But still, downloading a ROM and getting an emulator/buying a flashcart is a feasible option nowadays.
I never knew this existed. Also, big props for addressing the difference between PAL and NTSC resulting in slower games. It's crazy to think of stuff like this, because that meant that even SONIC was slower in PAL territories. It's not Capcom's fault, nor is it Wiley Wars' fault, and I appreciate your effort in fighting misinformation and misconceptions regarding these regional differences. You do thorough research, and make entertaining and interesting content.
I have been a massive Mega Man fan since I was 5 years old in 1990 and was utterly enraptured watching my older brother play Mega Man 2 on our NES. I’m 39 today and the game still captures some magical sense of mystery and wonder for me. That said, I had absolutely no clue that this Sega remake of the three games existed until I discovered it on the Switch’s genesis emulator. And this shocks me, because I not only owned a Genesis but I played 16-bit console games on my PC via emulator years ago, and somehow this ROM never made it into my Genesis folder! So weird. Such a cool remake.
9:05 The specific reason for the European Slowdown is that NTSC runs at 60 Hertz while PAL only runs at 50, directly impacting performance of a game that was not optimized there. Fun fact: the same happened with the first Sonic game, so Gotta Go Slow! 😂
I remember this game from Sega Channel. I didn’t understand back then why I never saw this collection in any other place. It was quite fun, basically my favorite way to play those classic games. Happily the upcoming Sega Genesis mini will have Wily Wars, so I’m looking forward to that.
Great video but I have a question about the Game Gear, is the Game Gear region free? I have one but I always have the interest to know this. Thanks in advance.
Aleblasco77 Blue in Yahoo answers says the following: Yes, the Game Gear is region free. USA games should work on your Game Gear and vice versa. You can also play Japanese games if you so desire. Steve W. says in a forum: (...) portables aren't going to be region locked since they're not tied to different television standards like game consoles are. I hope this helps.
I had a Sega Channel as a kid and it was the first time I got to play any Mega Man title. The best part of the Sega Channel was staying up late at night on the last day of the month for the game catalog refresh to happen.
I know you don't know it (which is a shame since it's one of the longest running RPGs series) but is there gonna be a gaming historian episode on the Megami Tensei series ?
***** It is well know just recently. But through long time it was considered as obscure. Many games in this series weren't even translated.. I still hope that they translate SMT If one day.
YELLOW DEVIL and the CWU-01P are extremely difficult since you have no Energy Tanks. Playing in slow mo seems like a definite help. I recently played through Mega Man 1 - Mega Man 6 for the first time in my life and the HARDEST battle I ever had to do was Yellow Devil.
Sega Channel didn’t erase downloads when you turned off the system. It stored save files for the entire month, and then the save files were deleted at the start of the next month. Mostly because the games were rotated out and replaced with new ones.
TheKingOfTown Me too. Piano always manage to give some kind of nostalgic feeling on me. Fitting really well into this channel, which is all about history... gaming history...
An Unimportant Person In The Internet Yeah but I mean the retro sounding theme just makes sense. It's a gaming channel after all, a retro gaming channel at that. I won't say I won't miss the old theme either though.
I really don't get this "emulation is stealing" thing, about most games. If the game isn't officially sold anymore, then buying the real thing doesn't give the company that made it any money.
I’m a heavy drinker and very overweight: after a week long drinking binge I feel like I’m having a heart attack or just really bad heartburn: while I’m waiting to ride this out (I’ve had similar episodes of this before) I’m watching your videos: they are tremendously helpful in taking my mind off dying. @@louistournas120 I mean, personally he used to be, and i know its partly because i dont think poop jokes are that funny but in recent times hes seemed to have phoned in a lot of it, and i only jest around because i want him to improve. I saw somebody do a parody of AVGN and that one 20 second clip made me laugh more than the last 50 episodes from AVGN. Im just trying to be fair since the people who make these type of comments list youtubers that are guilty of doing those things when AVGN has been guilty of it for the past like 5 years now. I understand he was an influential content creator but so were Smosh and Ray William Johnson and everyone always gives them crap.
Had a big grin on my face near the start of the vid when the Elecman stage music popped up.
Shivers of nostalgia in that tune.
This game will be included in the Sega genesis mini.in years this game couldn't be played but thankfully Sega gave us a chance to play it with the mini.
2:57 I have seen that image face-swapped so many times its weird to look at this in its regular form
US Gold is a British company? Odd choice of name then.
Not really considering their output.
Dat irony doh.
Wow. Domark Is A British Company Too.
It's because they are importing u.s. gold
Now that Wily Wars is on the Nintendo Switch Online, is it weird playing a NES game that was remade for Sega Genesis on a Nintendo system?
kinda ironic that they made regular saves for the sega port, seeing that passwords for a sega channel version would be the PERFECT environment
Nice Channel Dude-You should do some history on TurboGraphix and 3do
yes!
Larry Stevenson
Totally, I never heard a lot about the TurboGraphix/PC Engine!
This is a system I'd love to know furthermore.
The Turbo Graphix 16 was an awesome console. I'm glad to see a lot of there games on Wii eshop.
How is emulating wrong when you're okay giving money to people who sell online ROMs without official licenses?
@@tehValorin I use emulators, but that's because it reduces wear and tear on my carts, but I use emulation as it was intended *to back up games I own*
pikistikman because there isn’t an official ntsc provided by the company. I mean, nowadays it’s on the genesis mini but after hoe many years? This also raised the question about game preservation. When companies don’t care for their old library of games and and don’t mind about preserving games for future generations that’s when this options appear (albeit illegal) but oh well.
You always make great videos Norm.
I like your profile picture.
Good to see that this channel has grown so much since the beginning. I feel like I’ve grown with it in a way. Great job!

You should do a review on Pulseman. A game created by Gamefreak before they created Pokemon
MrGamer1992
Title:”Gamefreak on Sega”
Original game has passwords that help you save your progress in the games. The compilation has a save feature -- BUT, since Sega deleted you downloads, that meant they deleted your saves as well... I.E in this case it would have been better if the game had been using passwords instead.
I'm sure they didn't originally intend to release on the Sega Channel
Me in 2019: it’s gonna be on the Genesis mini!
Actually, they also had Strider on the Genesis/ Mega Drive, despite not having the Capcom logo
The mega man and sonic art probably started the mega man and sonic comic crossover
You could've also mentioned Megaman 8, X3 and X4 which came out on the Sega Saturn and are considered (for the most part) the superior versions to their Playstation counterparts.
He could've, but he's talking about Genesis era, not Saturn.
I totally forgot about that, I actually finished megaman x3 and x4 on the Saturn, not even sure if x3 and x4 were on any other console.
Megaman 8 (and a little of X4 since PS1 still great and the most popular one) yeah i agree but X3 is the worst one in comparation of the SNES version the worst thing is the soundtrack
Superior or not, they weren't exclusive.
Hy there : )
good old times to remember!
Rock on man, I will be watching for your videos now
Now coming to the sega Genesis mini
Mega man on the Genesis? My mind is blown!
It's a shame you got so few subs :/ you deserve way more.
Can't wait to play Wily Wars for the first time when the Sega Genesis Classic releases this year.
E.M.U.L.A.T.I.O.N
No, it's not taboo. No, it's no less authentic. Yes, it's fucking incredible. Pretenting that it doesn't exist and it's still 1993 is fucking annoying.
Yeah and I mean he bought an unofficial cart so he financially supported piracy. Seems pretty dumb to do if you are against emulators
Jeremy Johnson What does it stand for?
Actually, emulators sometimes are less authentic. Some emulators are pretty inaccurate, such as ZSNES.
But still, downloading a ROM and getting an emulator/buying a flashcart is a feasible option nowadays.
Those controls and slowdown kill it for me though. I'll stick with the NES originals.
Can't say enough good things about your videos. Very educational and informing and I love your style of monologue. Thanks bro.
The slowdown is just Megaman using the speed gear.
Thank god for emulators and downloadable roms.
And flashcarts.
Nice new intro music

Ezequiel Gonzalez What? I like it too.

I'been a die hard fan of the MegaMan series and now i finally have a new MegaMan to come back to... very nice
New intro music is awesome
I watched this video a few days ago and was overcome with an urge to buy and play Mega Man games.
Thanks, I had no idea that Mega Man was on the Genesis
Rockman Mega World= Mega Man Rock World
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard = Biohazard 7: Resident Evil.
You should make a video on Sega Channel, I think that would be really interesting! I understand if you have a busy schedule though!
Also, funny how the British company is called US Gold lol

DOUBLE GEAR SYSTEM CONFIRMED!
Great video but I have a question about the Game Gear, is the Game Gear region free? I have one but I always have the interest to know this.
Thanks in advance.
Aleblasco77 I believe so. Can anyone else confirm?
Thanks for the answer, btw I'm European, so does my Game Gear
Aleblasco77 Blue in Yahoo answers says the following: Yes, the Game Gear is region free. USA games should work on your Game Gear and vice versa. You can also play Japanese games if you so desire.
Steve W. says in a forum: (...) portables aren't going to be region locked since they're not tied to different television standards like game consoles are.
I hope this helps.
***** Got you covered.
Aleblasco77 Yes its region free, I'm only going from a few articles and Yahoo answers though. So don't quote me.
Fun fact: you CAN play the Japanese version by using a 32x which can bypass the region lock
And a Game Genie, using a code.
@@GamingDelight didn’t know that, thanks!!
Keep making these gems Man. I really enjoy your content. : )
More like SEGA Man, am I right?
...
I’ll show myself out...
You should be on "Drunk History" :)
This is an absolutely phenomenal idea.
Hard to come by? Emulation fixes that problem pretty quick.
wow this is the new video for megaman! watching the first one earlier lol
I had a Sega Channel as a kid and it was the first time I got to play any Mega Man title. The best part of the Sega Channel was staying up late at night on the last day of the month for the game catalog refresh to happen.
ahhhhhhh i love the from cover Mega man 1 ( Masterpiece ) LOVE IT :D
Is that sarcasm i see?
Your a strange man
The European box art is great.
3:03 jesus christ that's the creepiest megaman I've ever seen, on some real sociopath shit.
I like the old intro better :(
TheKingOfTown Me too. Bring it back!
TheKingOfTown I like the new one! I hope he keeps it. To each their own :)
Duke Jaywalker Yeah I like the new one too.
TheKingOfTown Me too. Piano always manage to give some kind of nostalgic feeling on me. Fitting really well into this channel, which is all about history... gaming history...
An Unimportant Person In The Internet
Yeah but I mean the retro sounding theme just makes sense. It's a gaming channel after all, a retro gaming channel at that. I won't say I won't miss the old theme either though.
2:52 why the art for video games in the US was so ugly back than?
Dvir Arazi i know the US boxart for sonic 1 is ugly as fuck
For all of them in my opinion, which is super weird since the Japanese box art for them is freaking gorgeous! Same for Mega Man
Sonic 1's US Box Art is good, though. I'd say kinda even better then JP, except the Sonic's face.
Just get the ROM for the Megadrive game. Nothing to feel bad about, we weren't given the option of legally purchasing it, so we'll steal it
I really don't get this "emulation is stealing" thing, about most games. If the game isn't officially sold anymore, then buying the real thing doesn't give the company that made it any money.
It's not stealing, it's making a copy. The two things are not even remotely comparable.
Thanks to this video, I just snagged myself a repro cart. Thanks for making me aware of this game!!
I just wanted to say thank you so much for your content. Needless to say if I make it out of this, *the drinking stops 100% this time and the weight comes off and I mean it this time* wish me luck
"U.S. Gold, a British company..."
Wait wait wait. WHAT? Who though that was a good idea for a name?
It's fine, it actually stands for "unfortunately soggy".
As in "These are the best games in the U.S., brought to the U.K."
You're dead on Norm. I had Sega Channel back in the day, and you couldn't save your progress on Wily Wars.
Are you from Japan?
@@mep6302 Since Sega Channel was exclusive to North America, probably not.
Hey! Could you do a report on the greatest gaming magazine I ever read, Gamefan? Man, back in the 90's that was just an amazing magazine. Unprofessionalism killed it off imo, but hey, I am not the Gaming Historian! Do it!!!
Drithe Bors Gamefan was also pro Dreamcast. And were early anime friendly.
I didn't expect to find at least 3 comments on Mega Man's design at 2:53
MegaMan: The Wily Wars has finally been officially released in the US thanks to the Genesis Mini and Retro-Bit Publishing!
