    Rachel is making me upset. I'm an American and I know what school is like, but she is always like "in America this. In America that..etc..." It's really annoying. I feel like she is too overwhelmed and doesn't really like her job. She needs to learn that using Korean actually will help the students learn. My Chinese teacher doesn't 100% speak fluent Chinese to me. Yeah.. Sorry for ranting, she just kind of annoys me. She doesn't really look grateful I guess. She may feel grateful but her attitude doesn't show that.

      +raytwin11 - I think she kept mentioning the difference between Korea and America when it comes to the relationship between students and teachers because the production staff probably wanted her to explain her reaction to the students following her home and wanting to play.

      Exactly, she is in over her head and so she wants to compare everything to the US. Unfortunately a good amount of American girls I met in Korea acted the same way. It's so annoying and it's so telling of what kind of environment you were raised in. These girls have no idea how to be flexible and adapt. As soon as things get hard they just shut down and convince themselves that they are right to not want to learn it. Egocentric ignorance.

    "Living in the country we don't have the opportunity to learn any Korean"... Are you kidding me? That's the perfect place, most people speak no English and if immerse yourself with the locals you'll be forced to learn the language... Rachel seems like one of those entitled Americans who believe that Koreans should speak English since foreigners might not understand

    • @rvyna4827
      @rvyna4827 8 лет назад +59

      IKR. What she's saying is complete and utter bullshit. The best way to learn a language is to speak it and be around it. She doesn't even have to connect w/ native speakers online, like many who don't have immediate access do. She's surrounded day in and day out by Koreans speaking Koreans so there's no excuse. I hate those type of foreigners. If you're given the chance to go, common curtesy is at least trying to learn the language even if you won't be there for too long.

    • @childkc
      @childkc 8 лет назад +18

      Honestly, people like Paula and Paulina (and also the guys) probably live in Seoul where there are lots of foreigners and a lot of Koreans who actually speak English yet they learned at least some Korean, is that couple even serious? I don't want to be the asshole here but this is exactly why so many foreigners can't stand Americans since some of them tend to act so incredibly entitled (obviously not everyone but Rachel's not really helping that case here...).

    • @Monoiru

      that girl has no idea how lucky she is to LIVE in the country so she can interact with the locals. I would trade places with her any day. It's so hard learning proper Korean with only books, hello talk and once in a while interaction over the phone with my Korean friends. Instead of spending all day speaking Korean I do it maybe 2/3 hours a day.

    As a teacher of English (teaching it as a 2nd language) I highly believe it is important to at least understand and know the mother language of the country you teach in. Especially regarding grammar, if you don't understand the grammar rules of the first language how can you compare and explain a 2nd language to students?
    I sincerely hope Rachel will learn more Korean quickly (I understand she wants to teach in the 2nd language but she needs to be able to switch when it is necessary).

    • @TheRealityofFake
      @TheRealityofFake 8 лет назад +5

      +Flowangelic There are different approaches to teaching a foreign language. It is possible to teach a class successful only using the 2nd language. Although, I really can't say Rachel is doing well at this. Also, I don't believe Rachel is the kids only English teacher. I'm pretty sure they have a Korean teacher who teaches them English using Korean.

      so true, even though a white person may have different treatment, not necessarily positive or negative, a person who's black, mixed, or brown will hundred percent experience more discrimination whether or not if they're in their home country or not. I have a Chinese friend living in Korea and even he says that he receives more racist comments than the white people in Korea.

    God, Rachel and her boyfriend literally have no respect for anything but American culture, their comments are so entitled and have a really uncomfortable "white man's burden" tone to them. If you're in Korea, you don't have to be fluent, but at least start learning the language and respect and learn about their culture.

    What Paulina's leader said to her is true. You're taught the moves then practice them at home, not just during session. This is in order for your body muscles to memorize the movements and everyone in the group can dance in synchronized fashion. They're not dancing free style and not being synchronized will make them look sloppy and unprofessional. Although that witch could've told all that lecture in a better way and if possible in private like what Paula's senior did to her during one of their shows. Paula was taken into the room and not let the camera see them. Well, at least now a lot more people would know what a witch this leader is, ex-BV back dancer or not.

    I honestly think that if Rachel wants her students to learn English properly, she should use some koreans cuz the kids look so lost when she only speaks English, she needs to connect with them so they can understand easly. One of the basic methods is try to make the students watch english speaking cartoons, cuz you actually learn a lot by watching

    • @ttetpos5157
      @ttetpos5157 8 лет назад +1

      +areej nb I agree that she should use minimal Korean. However if you find yourself using too much Korean, it's a disservice to the children.

    • @usedtobemyself
      @usedtobemyself 7 лет назад

      If I had been taught English without any of my first language at that young age, I also would not understand. Those students can't learn something if they don't know the meaning of it in their own language. The whole logic is flawed.

  • @ttetpos5157
    @ttetpos5157 8 лет назад +47

    For Paula: no need to give racist comments any time. She's got 3 things going against her in Korea: a foreigner, a woman, and being dark skinned. For Paulina: the instructor's (Lee Eunji) method for correcting Paulina is flat out inappropriate. She should have pulled Paulina aside (or to a different room) and talk to her about it PRIVATELY--not embarrass her in front of everyone. However, that is the way of the Korean culture. For Rachel: if she is there to teach English (in class), it should be the main (99%) language spoken/written during class hours. While she should learn the Korean language to assist her (for minimal use in class and daily life outside of school), she is there to teach English during school. To keep speaking Korean would be a disservice to the objective of teaching English to the children. Some say she's in a foreign country and should learn the language--I agree that she should learn and speak as much Korean as she can. You're in another country, not the US (state of Idaho - per her T-Shirt). However her students are in her "country" during class and should learn/speak English. The pendulum swings both ways.
    And lastly, those kids in Rachel's class have no manners. You don't jump on, pull down, or hit the teacher. One of them even BIT her! That is insane.

    Rachel shouldn't be teaching kids that young if she can't even explain herself in Korean. Kids won't learn English like that from a lesson a week being taught in purely english, to learn just by hearing and seeing you'd need to be constantly listening to English or whatever language. She doesn't seem to want to let people give her tips on teaching either which makes her seem... Stubborn to the point of stupid.
    And then we have Paulina... who's a professional dancer, right? Then shouldn't she have been practicing her choreography as often as possible after first learning it?
    From what I've seen, the 'struggles' these people are having are all down to their own faults. Not being willing to learn, not willing to accept new things, not willing to try.
    The only thing I'll say aside from the negative is my respect for Paulina and Paula. Compared to everyone else that's been on this show (aside from like Shannon) they've welcomed Korean culture in so quickly and warmly, unlike that italian chef who still pisses me off to this day.
    If you're going to live in another country, for whatever reason, you have to accept their culture. Whether you like how they do things or not. You need to learn what things are rude there. Just because it's not rude in your country doesn't mean it's not rude their country.

    • @ttetpos5157
      @ttetpos5157 8 лет назад +1

      +Honor Burrows Regarding Rachel: we don't fully know her situation for using only English during class. If she is mandated to do so, she's complying per job requirements (though she should use minimal Korean to explain things here/there). Regarding Paulina: she should be learning the dances on her own in addition to practice hours. However, that doesn't justify her getting chewed out by the instructor in front of everyone. Pull Paulina aside or to another room and talk to her PRIVATELY. That was just plain 'ol rude, IMO. That tells me she must have loved being chewed out during her days as a Baby V.O.X. dancer. Otherwise, she should have learned from that and gone with a different approach in handling her subordinates. Ahh, history repeats itself.

      TTet Pos and your opinion depends on what you're used to. That's just how things are in terms of dancing. Getting chewed out in front of people will make most more determined to prove them wrong.
      However with Rachel, it's pretty obvious she doesn't speak Korean just from seeing what words she uses. Take what you want from it, I still think it's ridiculous they expect her to be able to teach well without a lick of Korean leaving her mouth.

You don't need friends to learn Korean either (though it helps to learn faster) but they've been their for 10 months, struggling to even count to 1-10...Also how are the little kids suppose to know what they are saying in English if they don't use a bit of Korean to translate. It's like trying to learn a new language without anyone telling you what they're saying means. Then her boyfriend says his job is to live in an English bubble so it doesn't help to learn Korean quickly....all i can do is laugh at all the reasons they come up with. They also keep making comparisons to America..WAKE UP! You ain't in America no more, get over it! learn and get use to the culture in Korea

I work hard everyday and try learning about the culture as much as possible so I can go there to study. I have a learning disability but I still find time to work hard and study as much as possible. I feel like it's more respectful to atleast learn some korean if you're going to visit in their country. Especially if you go to live there. I also believe what those dudes said. You have to use korean in teaching sometimes to not confuse the communication.

    Rachel is confusing, she compares Korea to America a lot and a lot of her comparisons aren't true for the whole country. America is big. They're many places here where students are close to their teachers it just depends, I have lots of teachers on my facebook page. Also there are always opportunities to learn a language if you try hard enough.

    I know it's probably annoying for Paula(she seems like the super smart bookish type) but she chose to be a cheerleader. it's more than just getting the routines. girl, you need to learn how to do your makeup. there's just no excuse because RUclips provides you with every possible issue, especially for women of color in korea. same thing for your hair. you are not any less beautiful than the other girls, they just know how to look for performing and so should you.feeling confident in how you look will definitely help with your confidence while performing. that aside, your a wonderful representation of your country. seriously, you're a better manage than may korean born ones, and it not heck ture you fully understand but you try hard to respect it.Kudos to you and hope the best for you. hope to see you o some variety shows and stuff!

    What is Rachel even talking about, teachers in the US are very hands on with students in the US. It just depends on the school you teach at. It's quite frustrating how she keeps on comparing US schools to Korean schools (they're two different cultures), maybe if you made the effort to learn the language you'd have less of a problem.

    I guess where she comes from in America all those teacher student boundaries exist but where i'm from it is okay for teachers and students to be appropriately affectionate towards each other. Adults who are responsible for children have to set boundaries in order to properly lead them. Rachael seems to be a human toy to her students. She doesn't have to be mean to them but she does have to make sure they respect her because she is their teacher.

      The dancing crew team leader low key pissed me off, like you're wasting time complaining about time being wasted instead of letting the others help her with the moves. And as a dancer, dude her moves weren't even that on point (the few that she did) so I don't see how she could pin Paulina on not being able to get the choreo down. You don't even have to be a dancer to see that either, like compare the team leaders moves to the other girls dancing (especially the one in the hat) and they do a lot better than she did.

Even though the teacher insisted we all speak only in english, the kids wouldn't understand or pay attention to us. So I agree with the guys who suggested speaking half-half, because the students can understand better and express better their doubts.

    I'm sorry but if the teachers don't learn any Korean by the last episode of their set I'm gonna be pissed. If you want to work in a country, you should be able to get around and speak at least a little of the language. It's almost impolite to completely ignore the language and culture of the country, and act like you're superior to it because you're from somewhere else. And Rachel definitely should not be putting the other teachers down because they want to actually teach the kids something they'll understand, because they made an effort to at least partially assimilate before they got a job. It's just so frustrating. And this is not the first time this has been an issue on this show. There's no reason for foreigners to seem lazy, but because of some of these people, it's painting that picture.

Rachel needs to understand that she’s in a different country, they do things differently and THEY ARE KIDS! If she can’t handle it and if she’s going keep comparing every single detail and issue she has being in Korea to america then she should just go back

    I wonder if Rachel thought about what she said on camera before she uttered them because it's pure BS. No opportunity to learn the language because you can't make friends? What has learning the language have to do with the other? You don't need to have a BFF to learn Korean or any language. What she and her BF need is the initiative to approach Koreans, be they old or young when the situation arises and ask "how to do you call this in Korean?" Talk to their co-teachers and ask them for help then write everything down on how to pronounce the words. This is to build their vocabulary. These two created their own English bubble and should be blaming themselves for it. They don't want to extend themselves outside of this bubble. Acquiring another language does not come easy(for most people), so they need to make an effort. Can't stand this couple. I'm sure there are better English teachers out there.

      +TTet Pos It's because they don't take her seriously. From my experience as a student there was always that one teacher (a lot of times the substitute teachers) who couldn't handle the class because he/she didn't have authority. The students are just testing how far they can go with Rachel because she didn't set clear boundaries. She isn't getting angry at the children and she didn't even tell the girl who bit her anything. She's laughing it off so the students think what they're doing is okay. That's why it's crucial for her to speak Korean to them. How could you ever teach your students something when you can't even communicate with them...

    I'm pretty vain, but damn if Korean society doesn't focus way too hard on appearance. Most of the people/features they claim to be so beautiful really aren't even that, so it's laughable. Not to mention, why do you have to be pretty to be a cheerleader? Most people across the WORLD who hold these "pretty jobs" (e.g. cheerleaders, models, actors/actresses, singers) aren't anything but breast implants, hair weave and fake lashes.
    I don't see why Paula would even be affected by Internet remarks as *1]* She's not ugly at all. I don't think she's anything to write home about, but she has a cuteness about her. *2]* Why would someone even preface that with "I'm not racist?" Not finding someone pretty while they just happen to be foreign has nothing to do with prejudice. That just shows they're trying to mask their true nature. The other girls on her squad aren't doin a lot themselves, sooo.... ask about them too. *3]* The comment received negative votes, so delight in that at least! lol

Rachel and her boyfriend need to stop being a koreaboo and actually learn something seriously. They just make excuses...so many people kill for the opportunity that they have. I see everyone getting on Rachel’s case and I agree with the fact that she should be learning Korean at least basic. But the students following her home and such threw me off too. I’m usually very open culturally but she’s right about how it is in America. While there are some teachers who do home visits or go the extra mile for their classes you need to keep your personal space. The children following her home, jumping and biting her is not acceptable in American schools. I would be very uncomfortable with that. I think Rachel needs to get out more and explore Korea and their culture, she always seems very awkward and it can come off as disrespectful.
