  • In this video I go through how to replace the bottom ball joints on my MK5 Ford Transit - including problems encountered along the way. This process will be very similar for other vehicles so please feel free to use this as a guide for doing it yourself at home, using basic hand tools.
    Links for tools/parts used:
    Ball joint splitter: ebay.us/alhwd8
Note: I slightly modified this ball joint splitter to make the jaws wider for the bigger ball joint. This was a quick and simple modification using a grinding disc.
    Quality Delphi Ball Joints: ebay.us/nlB4Ux
    WD40 Penetrating fluid: amzn.to/3ydtZbN
Torque specs for Mk5 Ford Transit:
Lower arm ball joint to lower arm nuts = 40-51NM
Lower arm ball joint to stub axel nut = 200NM (1992 onwards) 130NM (Pre 1992)
Shock absorber to stub axel bolts = 40-57NM

I just took the knuckles off as i thought it would be easier to start with 😂
I think delphi ones are about the best you can fit to them really. Should last well.
Must just advise putting the handle on your grinder, on the side it will shoot off to if it snags (usually has an arrow pointing this on the top), on bosch its on/off switch side. It will be better to be hit in the face with the handle than...
Keep up the good work, and nice videos, as I've shared a few of them to people so they can see what the job entails, before they have a go at it.
The shock is only 3 bolts off being out the way too.

My new ball joints arrived today. Think there was 3 different makes to choose from. I went with Bilstein and £30 for both sides delivered was good I thought. Hopefully get them fitted in the next couple of days or maybe I will get the track rod ends and do them at the same time. Thanks for your vid mate 👍

Hi Sean, I have put a link in the description to the one I have, eBay special 😅 I just used a grinding disc to widen the jaws so that it fitted the ball joint shaft diameter. Can’t remember the exact measurement as it was a bit of trial and error 👍🏼
