    Thank you so much for posting this! I'm 73--my mother was a die-hard Carole Lombard fan. Carole died in Jan, 1942, my older brother was born in April. I'm sure, had he been a girl, he would have landed the name. Instead, my mom had to wait another 4 years for a girl to name Carole. Fascinating to imagine how difficult it was to recover victims. Thanks again. Carole H, Monett, MO

    Thank you for taking me along. I'm from the flat lands of Ohio with no mountain climbing or hiking experience. Heck I trip walking up stairs. This video was so well done I feel like I was there. Such a tragic ending for the people on board. Carol Lombard was born and lived to around eight years old in Ft. Wayne IN, not far from where I'm sitting right now. People go to cemeteries to pay their respect, you paid your respect by trekking dangerous landscape and remembering the lives lost there. Thanks again for taking me along.

    The piece of wreckage at 24:21 was the adjustment mechanism for the variable pitch propeller. Also, you mentioned jet engines, but DC-3s back then had radial piston engines. Every bank of cylinders in a radial engine had an odd number of pistons. Only recently has a private company started installing turbo-prop engines in the old DC-3s and they will be flying for many more decades. It is a truly amazing airframe.

    Congrats for achieving your goal of reaching the crash site. Thanks for taking a moment to reflect on the lives lost there so many years ago. I wonder if any "ghost hunters" have ever camped there overnight and tried to record EVP at the site. Mercifully, no one aboard that plane would have felt any pain - they all would have died instantly. I'm surprised that there isn't a plaque or memorial of some kind on the mountain. Maybe the Klampers will get around to erecting one sooner or later. Stay safe. Cheers.

    Great vid! The accident was on January 16th 1942. Carole Lombard was a beautiful and gifted actress! One of my favorite actresses. On board that flight was her mother too and a few military servicemen. She was flying back to LA to sell war bonds for the government. Rumor has it Clarke Gable (her husband) was staying at The Golden Gate Hotel (Hotel Nevada), during the recover investigation of the crash. He offered a reward if the investigation recovery crew found her wedding ring! Supposedly that was never found! People to this day still hike to that site to try to find it. Amazing! Thanks Wonderhussy! God Speed Beautiful!

    • @canyonair

      Thomas Sala Clark Gable was staying at the Las Vegas El Rancho along with MGM’s Eddie Mannix and Howard Strickland. A day later, actor Spencer Tracy drove up from LA to be with Clark. Contrary to rumor, Gable never stayed in Goodsprings nor was he in the Pioneer Saloon to drink and smoke cigars. The timeline and circumstances would not make that possible, in addition there is no evidence to prove Gable was in Goodsprings during the events after the accident.

    My parents were in Las Vegas when the January 16, 1942 TWA Flight 3 crashed. So it has been a part of my memory. In the 1950's, as a kid, I remember my father's friend saying that there were still bones being found on the site. A great recent book is " Fireball: Carole Lombard and Mystery of Flight 3" by Robert Matzen (2014 ). As an aviator who studies accident reports as a matter of continuing education, I found this book's investigation of the disaster to be of more than usual interest. An overloaded DC-3 carrying Lombard back from a war bond event, and 21 other passengers -- mostly young Army aviators. Two TWA pilots who were unfamiliar with the area, using a wrong flight plan, off-course, leveling off at a cruising altitude of 8,000 feet instead of 10,000 feet. On a dark moonless night. According to witnesses at the nearby Blue Diamond Mine it appeared that the pilots were adjusting the engine settings right before the impact. It is surmised that they would have had the cockpit lights turned up to do this. So they didn't see the ridge of Mount Potosí at 8200 feet. I have flown in and out of Las Vegas. In daylight. I can imagine how treacherous this would have been at night, 78 years ago.

    • @canyonair
      @canyonair 4 года назад +11

      Malcolm Marzo I provided technical assistance for Matzen’s Fireball book. The flight plan was made for 8,000’ and that would have been a correct and safe altitude if they flew the required radio range bearing (per TWA directive) from Las Vegas. However, they flew a heading that took them about 7 miles off course into 8,500’ Potosi Mountain.

    • @1957MCL
      @1957MCL 4 года назад +10

      @@canyonair They had intended to land at Boulder City but there were no runway lights operating there and so requested landing at Las Vegas. Coordinates were not adjusted and that was the cause. There were many delays with this flight that, had it been daylight, would have of course safely crossed the mountains. It seems incredible, but there it was. Simple human error. No sabotage, no mystery. "Oh, before you take off Captain Williams, make sure that you consider the fact that you're taking off from Vegas and not Boulder City. Otherwise you'll fly straight into Mt.Potosi". If only those words had have been spoken. By someone.

    • @canyonair
      @canyonair 4 года назад +5

      1957MCL There’s a bit more to the story than the flight simply flew the wrong heading. I don’t think Matzen mentioned in his book, but a TWA directive issued to their pilots in 1941 required them to fly the radio range course from Las Vegas to Burbank (day or night). So the mystery remains is why Williams and Gillette elected to fly off the required radio range course that took them about 6-7 miles west of route into Potosi. Equipment malfunction (doubtful) or it was intentional to fly a more direct route in order to save time on running late. There’s never a clear cut answer to human error accident.

    • @1957MCL
      @1957MCL 4 года назад +3

      @@canyonair I absolutely respect your knowledge regarding this very unfortunate crash and it does seem to underscore the mystery attached to it. I had read eye witness accounts saying that the plane was bobbing up and down 'as if there was a struggle going on in the cockpit'. That's rather chilling, isn't it? What kind of struggle? Do you think that there was, after all, sabotage with flight 3? I've often pondered that. The mystery endures.

    Your most interesting video. As a kid my family vacationed in Maine. Near the marina there was what appeared to be an old abandoned boat. My brother and I played in it, there was old clothes, canned food, etc. Our motel owner showed us a scrap book of news clippings.The winter before a young couple coming down the coast from Canada stayed in port because a storm was coming. They stupidly filled the sink with charcoal to light to keep warm and killed themselves with CO2. Someone went to check on them after the storm. They were dead, the boat had tar all over one side from when they pulled it up the ramp. Aaaaand it just sat at the marina. I know we weren’t the only kids to do play in the death boat. It disappeared before out vacation ended. 🤢 🤮 🤷‍♂️ the 70’s were quite different.

    I've passed by Mt. Potosi on my way to Vegas hundreds of times (Wonderhussy and I live in the same general area) and never knew the legendary Carol Lombard died in a plane crash there. Thanks for sharing Wonderhussy.

    So glad to see you made it. I watched you last attempt and felt bad. It's amazing how close you came! Sad to know what happened there but very interesting none the less. Thanks for the hard work finding the wreck site and sharing with us! Does Larry have a RUclips channel? I missed it if you said so.

    I saw the first time you tried it . Nice to see you guys finally made it, now ,just stay away from sharp & pokie things, they will try and kill you. Good to see the dynamic duo ( Larry & Sara Jane ) back together covering knarley, sketchy,hiking ,across vast amounts of land, great stuff. Stay safe, Bob.G

    At about timestamp 23:56 you make reference to the 'jet' engine. At that time there were no jet engines on commercial planes; not on any planes that I know of actually. The DC-3 would have been spinning propellers on its two engines. It's kind of earie to see that debris and know what happened there so long ago. Good on you guys for making it.

    @13:21 Dr Robert Ballard had the same type of reaction that Wonderhussy had when the Titanic was discovered in 1985. They had come upon a grave site.

    Oh my goodness this is so sad!! Glad you conquered it, WH. Kudos to you and your friends and thank you for sharing the adventure. You know, another wreckage site that is sad like this one is Patsy Clines crash site. There are really so many plane crash locations but Patsy is special to me. And hers is similar to this one being on a mountain.
    Stay safe, Peeps xo

      The Patsy Cline crash site isn't on a mountain. That's a common misconception. Check out "Daze with Jordan the Lion ". He did a great vlog about it.
