I'm 64, and I don't recall there being Ziploc baggies in the 60s! But there were sandwich bags that had a flap you tucked into the bag, and folded a lip, of sorts, over the top. Neat explore, Wonderhussy!

I've come across a few open mine shafts in the Silver Island Mountains near Wendover, UT/NV. I just shined my light in, took a look, and called it good.
Another comment for Kerr McGee..... I used to have to visit the one in Henderson as an independent contractor around the time when Pepcon exploded. Kerr McGee was also making ammonium perchlorate (rocket fuel for the space shuttle) at that time. I was always the one that had to go there because I didn't have any facial hair (to interfere with emergency respirators)......When you entered, you would have to wear those rubber overshoes like the ones she found in the mine. They claimed that if your shoes, or pants were made of regular organic material, & you managed to get any of the perchlorate on them, and they rubbed together (like your pant legs) the stuff would ignite like striking a match....... There were these cut-off drums everywhere with some kind of fire extinguishing liquid in them called jump-tanks in case you caught yourself on fire........ Interesting place........ everything metal inside was in an advanced stage of corrosion. (like those metal cabinets...... Hope they paid well, because it didn't look like a healthy environment to work in.
I am impressed by what you had to do to show yourself going into and coming out of the bunker. You had to place the camera and re-enact going forward or coming out to make it look like someone was there to film you. Most RUclipsrs would not think to do that much production detail! You certainly know the entertainment business. Love your videos!
Hi Sarah! The Kerr-McGee hardhat you found was from the Kerr-McGee chemical company that at one time owned the Trona chemical corporation. There have been many owners over the years, and they had it for quite a while. The company is now called Searles Valley minerals. When Kerr-McGee owned it they were very generous to the surrounding communities, and you will still find many things named after them. It’s very possible that the helmet belong to one of the Manson family people, as some of them did work there. After all, they still have to eat.
Hello! Since you are interested in Manson family history, here is something I'm sure you'll find interesting. My father worked for the LAPD during the Manson family Era. My father was the officer that booked Charles Manson into the LAPD headquarters jail. All he told me about Manson was "there was something about his eyes" My dad fought in World War 2 and worked for the LAPD for 27 years. He was a member of the first SWAT team also. It was called "Metro" at the time. SO he was a very tough and brave man. The fact that Charles Manson creeped him out says something 😬 Love your videos! My father also taught my brother and I to love the desert as much as you DO. I spent many hours out there with the family "rock hounding. My dad was also a huge fan of visiting hot springs 😁
I was out last week along our tracks near Amboy snd followed an old railroad grade from the 1880s. I noticed a wooden structure under the old railbed which I thought was a drainage culvert. On closer inspection it turned out to be a hidden Chinese railroad worker shelter. The small entrance led into a large wood lined room. Outside there were numerous rice bowl fragments and 1880s refuse strewn around the historic feature. Being a previous professional archaeologist I will have to return and document the site

Funny Huss, you mentioned "garbage dump" a couple times at the end..Well for all you Manson family fanboys and girls who do not know this little trippy tidbit of MF trivia. Charlie Manson's one hit wonder song back in the mid-late 60's when he was an aspiring R&R god in Hollywould was called "Garbage Dump". It didnt fly ( like his school bus did out in DV on Acid). or make the charts in the top 1000. Out of curiosity i checked YT and sure enough "Garbage Dump" is on RUclips. So if you never heard it, check it out fanboys & girls.. I live in the South end of Owens Valley and was living there in Lone Pine '68 & '69.When the Manson family found their way up here. They lived or were holed up in a small cave/rock shelter up in the Alabama Hills for short while, Girls could be seen on occasion dumpster diving behind a couple fruit bearing cafe's & restraunts in town as well as rummaging in the dumpster behind the grocery store. After the round-up of those killer hippies from hell at the Barker Ranch, all of Manson's vehicles including the infamous Flying Bus , his 2 trucks, a couple of dune buggies and an old Rambler Cross Country station wagon were taken to County Line Junkyard near Trona, the buggies were sold early on and trucks were sold or parted out by the late 70's early 80's, but in 1999 or 2000 i was out at County Line looking for some parts for my old truck & Manson's magic bus was still there in the junkyard with all the hippie shit still scattered about inside. I imagine it's been cut up for recycle scrap by now, or some deranged LA fanboy found out about it & bought it. who knows & who really cares? Up until a few years ago there used to be a tour company out of LA called "Manson Family tours" small groups of people would come up here a couple times a year with a guide and visit all the factual and mostly fictional Manson Family hot spots. The Family did leave it's strange sometimes morbid legacy and bare footprint in one form or another in the towns of Olancha, Lone Pine, Independence, Keeler & Darwin as well as Saline Valley. I am not a Manson fanboy by any stretch, i just knew many of the local people involved in the round up & arrest. But most of what has become Urban legend of those times here is embellished bunk, fanboy filler, or tabloid tell -tale stories from the dark side. I've spoke to that Manson Family tour group guide a couple different times a few years ago and it was amazing all the make believe stories they created for their morbid minded clients. And how much local history pertaining to that Manson Family Vacation here that they didn't know & never will. As most the folks from those days have passed away or retired and moved. The few that are still alive & here either can't remember their own name or don't really care to talk about the dirty hippie hay days out in Death Valley.

Yes, I remember trying malt liquor...didn't care much for it. There were a couple of breweries that went out of business back in the 80s and 90s..because the old brew masters retired or were run off. Seems the younger folk thought they had a better idea, but the consumers complained of headaches, and poor tastes and other discontent...and sales fell off. Turns out that natural ingredients and natural processes work much better than chemistry stunts. Never can tell about the Manson Mob. They very well could have set that tunnel up as a hideout. If they didn't, it's only because they never had the time. Any supplies that were good in there were probably packed off decades ago by others who found the place, Still, it was a great explore. Nice explore!!!!........About 40 years ago, I worked with a man from the LA area, he told me he and his kids used to go motorcycle riding in the desert. He never saw them, but there was a story he was told by other people that if you went far enough out in the desert, you might see naked girls running around. He suspected that was some of the Manson family!!!!....I am also fascinated by the "family"!!!!
Hi Sarah, The Kerr Mcgee company had a large plant in Trona, CA where they mined chemicals from the dry lake bed there. A lot of the workers lived in Ridgecrest and drove the road there & back each day - they would buy bottles of beer and drink them on the drive home, tossing them out the window when done. The sides of the road were covered with broken glass.
A tough Independent Gal :) This video reminds me of when we kids used to camp in an old mine at Johannesburg near Randsburg. The one we camped in went through the hill so had two entrances. Larger tunnels with mine cart rails. Freezing winter weather outside and hot dusty rooms down below. One mine near Willow Springs Raceway even had a "pit" with a mummified coyote. I dropped a rock on it and one or two rats came squealing out over its remains. Keep making such interesting videos!
Kerr McGee was where Karen Silkwood worked. Cher played her in a movie called Silkwood. Kerr does various things but one of them was working with radioactive material for the Gov.
We had a lot of radio active waste scattered all over around DuPage Country and surrounding area back in the 70s, 80s and 90a. I lived in that area (south west suburbs of Chicago) from 1972 until 2006. Kerr McGee painted radium on clock, watch and instrument faces during WW 2.

According to a search, ziplock bags got their patent back in 1968, but they really weren't on the market until the early 1970s. They must have been expensive early on, because I don't remember them in our household until the late 70s. I always remember the sandwich bags with twist ties from my youth. Not that I am old at 55. Went there today with a couple granddaughters. They really liked it. It has to be one of the least visited spots in DVNP. Only one entry in the logbook after Sarah's and before ours.
I remember my logging day's and when you were stuck out in the woods and had to go, sometimes you had sacrifice a shirt sleeve. I could not help laughing when you were digging through the clothing.

That hardhat was from Kerr Mcgee, an oil company here in Oklahoma that became famous when a labor union activist named Karen Silkwood was on her way to a meeting to discuss things she had found out about the company, she never made it and was found in a single car accident dead! There was a movie done about it also. And the song Helter Skelter was a Beatles song from the white album i believe, Manson was a fan, you were singing the American Pie song, which did reference the act, in which they scrawled Helter skelter on the walls in blood! Kerr McGee also had mines. Silk wood involved a uranium mine. Kerr McGee also owned a coal mine in Wyoming in the 70s and 80s. The coal mine still exists, but Kerr McGee sold it years ago.

Yes, I remember trying malt liquor...didn't care much for it. There were a couple of breweries that went out of business back in the 80s and 90s..because the old brew masters

i am stuck in a wheel chair/walker. all the stuff looks like the burial ground for a drug lab. barrels of speed or l.s.d. residue. no gold coins or snakes. the bull malt was a favorite, with wintergreen gum. red and black are the Clampers colors.. Nice explore!!!!........About 40 years ago, I worked with a man from the LA area, he told me he and his kids used to go motorcycle riding in the desert. He never saw them, but there was a story he was told by other people that if you went far enough out in the desert, you might see naked girls running around. He suspected that was some of the Manson family!!!!....I am also fascinated by the "family"!!!!
Hi Sarah, The Kerr Mcgee company had a large plant in Trona, CA where they mined chemicals from the dry lake bed there. A lot of the workers lived in Ridgecrest and drove the road there & back each day - they would buy bottles of beer and drink them on the drive home, tossing them out the window when done. The sides of the road were covered with broken glass.

The shoes were Addis Gazelles which came out in the middle 1960s. They are still sold today though. My favorite running shoe in the 1970s.

A tough Independent Gal :) This video reminds me of when we kids used to camp in an old mine at Johannesburg near Randsburg. The one we camped in went through the hill so had two entrances. Larger tunnels with mine cart rails. Freezing winter weather outside and hot dusty rooms down below. One mine near Willow Springs Raceway even had a "pit" with a mummified coyote. I dropped a rock on it and one or two rats came squealing out over its remains. Keep making such interesting videos!

According to a search, ziplock bags got their patent back in 1968, but they really weren't on the market until the early 1970s. They must have been expensive early on, because I don't remember them in our household until the late 70s. I always remember the sandwich bags with twist ties from my youth. Not that I am old at 55. Went there today with a couple granddaughters. They really liked it. It has to be one of the least visited spots in DVNP. Only one entry in the logbook after Sarah's and before ours.
I remember my logging day's and when you were stuck out in the woods and had to go, sometimes you had sacrifice a shirt sleeve. I could not help laughing when you were digging through the clothing.

That hardhat was from Kerr Mcgee, an oil company here in Oklahoma that became famous when a labor union activist named Karen Silkwood was on her way to a meeting to discuss things she had found out about the company, she never made it and was found in a single car accident dead! There was a movie done about it also. And the song Helter Skelter was a Beatles song from the white album i believe, Manson was a fan, you were singing the American Pie song, which did reference the act, in which they scrawled Helter skelter on the walls in blood! Kerr McGee also had mines. Silk wood involved a uranium mine. Kerr McGee also owned a coal mine in Wyoming in the 70s and 80s. The coal mine still exists, but Kerr McGee sold it years ago.
