- This video is going over the layout of the Olympus TG-6. This is to help those who have purchased this camera (or the TG-4 or TG-5), either to introduce them to the buttons and features, or for someone who has had the camera but needs a reminder. The more you know, the less you will feel intimidated with the available settings and features!
If you have any questions I did not answer, please let me know in the comments below!

Really solid walk-through. Clear and straightforward, without a lot of digression. Saving it. Thank you so much. Olympus should hire you to do instructional videos.
I was at a Dive convention last month. One of the guys from my friend’s Dive shop mentioned that he uses this camera for Underwater photography. I plan on getting more into underwater videos, so I decided to pick this up
Perfect teaching video. Great Job. I opened my camera yesterday and watching this has me ready to go in a few minutes. Great tip about the float strap, I would not have thought of that and we don't need to drop more equipment to the bottom of the sea.
Bought this because I have abundance of wildlife on my property. No camera knowledge or skills, but with this I can take great pics on auto, scene, underwater and micro with auto focus set until I learn all the ins and outs. Chose this because I break everything and have lost 3 phones in our ponds alone. (More costly than this camera, so it's worth it alone from that perspective. So slap a screen protector on it and buy the lens protector and a wrist floater and you're covered. It's taken lots of outdoor spills and dunks and extreme weather without a problem. I continue to be impressed as I learn all the features. *I did bust the battery door hinge when I dropped it while open inside and it hit at a weird angle. It was replaced immediately with no problem.
Thank you so much for making this incredible tutorial. I was away on a snowmobile trip when my Sony Cybershot battery compartment door broke. I emailed 2 well respected camera stores and asked for their advice for a new camera but neither made a good suggestion for my needs. I need weatherproof, waterproof, shockproof compact ready to shoot camera. Your tutorial helped me decide the Olympus TG-6 would be a great fit for my needs. I ordered and received my camera and just finished learning how to use it with the help of your tutorial. You were clear, and comprehensive and went through the entire camera. You’re awesome!
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I got my camera about a month ago and have just kind of been playing with it. I wish I'd stumbled across this video weeks ago, it's so much more helpful and straightforward than the manual for the camera. Great job!
Thanks so much! I got this camera from my parents years ago but never learned how to use it. Thanks for the video!
Stumbled onto this video. Finally. a bit of luck. Just received my TG6 a day ago. Surprised no "book.". Your video..GREAT. Slow explaining, sat, followed along with mine. SUPER thank you. Did subscribe.
A good balance of emphasis here and there, tough to cover a lot of features and you did a good job. Thanks!
I just came back from the camera store and looked up useful videos and I'm sitting here, new camera in hand, liking the new tool more and more and more as it is clearly explained to me. Thank you so much for this -- I can tell I'll use this as a reference.
I am so hapy finally find someone who tell all about specification and not only show the look of camera and simple menu thanks
Just bought this camera and that was very helpful to take us through it. Thank you so much.
I am new to photography and your video was everything I needed to overcome my fear of playing with my new camera. You are an excellent teacher!! Thank you!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Similar with me. I'm not new to photography but I'm new to these digital cameras and I too have a fear of messing around with them. I agree that she is an excellent teacher!😊
Thanks for the overview, just got my tg-6 and you are right about the macro mode, its insane how good it is. Had 2 previous tg cameras and this one is the best by far.
They have lots of extra features not listed, for example hold down the info button for 3 second and the led illuminator turns on so it can be used as a torch. It also has a compass but i haven't figured out how to turn that on.
Just to add, to access the compass press the info button for maybe a second while the camera is off.
Just press the "info" button once quickly and the compass lights up
Thankyou for a clear and simple informative video. Feel like I know what I'm doing now.
Very informative, Thank you! Finally buying a new camera after many years. I'm sure I'll watch this a few more times.
Great walk-thru. I hate reading manuals. I just go in to the water and see whats happens. But the thing with this camera is that its a little to complicated just doing that. But you gave me just what I needed to go back down again. Thanks.
Hello,
I wanted to thank you very much for your very clear video. Fortunately there are people like you, because Olympus couldn't help me. So far delighted with my TG4 diving. I hope to be with the TG6 as well. Have a good day and thanks again
Absolutely fantastic tutorial. Thank you
I enjoyed the video as a refresher. I love my TG-6 for work and play. It's been my goto camera these days. Thanks for the walk through!
Great tutorial! I keep coming back to it. I love my tg6!
Thank you so much for this video. I agree with others that Olympus should pay you for this. Great explanation. Clear articulate and to then point.
Awesome camera, awesome video with tons of relevant info. Thank you Heather! You rock!
Considering this camera to document my section hike on Appalachian trail this summer...great video to help me decide, thx
Had to buy a new underwater camera as my super generic one was unrepairable. The camera shop suggested the next model up, however I couldn't afford that. I asked if they had the TG6 & if possibly they had a refurbished unit. They actually did and so I bought that for a good price! I am a super novice on these digital cameras, but your tutorial was absolutely wonderful. I have 2 weeks to figure it out befor I am in Aruba with my two friends! 🤿🦩
I will be getting this camera for underwater photography. Thanks for the video. Just a small advice for everybody, never delete the photos in camera, it can corrupt your photos (which you have already mentioned) and always format your sd card in camera. Two simple rules and easy to remember 😀.
Never delete photos in camera? Can you explain more? Thanks
@@KarenandBradStoriesNFlight well what I know is that deleting photos in camera can lead to having corrupted files and loosing your work. It is a piece of advice I’ve heard from a respected photographer but don’t remember the specifics why this is a possibility. I hope this helps. 😃
That's probably why I have had corrupt photos and SD cards.
@@cherylween4973 just format your cards from time to time and maybe buy some new ones and keep the old ones as back up cards. There was recently a discussion on how often people should buy new cards, but I don’t think there is a concrete answer. I guess it depends on how often you shoot and how many photos have been stored into your cards overall.
@@marieta.s I will need to remember that, but I almost never do that with the card in my phone because I always have data on it; same with the cards in my security cameras.
Fantastic walkthrough - thank you!
I just bought one and found this very helpful. Thanks!
Thank you so very much! I just purchased this camera and your video was extremely helpful!
Thank you for this video! I had actually already just bought this camera based on many great reviews overall. But your video was a nice, quick but thorough, introduction to getting started with it. So, thanks again!
Perfect .. thorough and easy to listen to .. thank you!
Excellent knowledge and presentation
Very well explained
You have helped me a lot 👍🏻
Thank's 😊
Great Video, I have just bought the TG-6 mainly for the macro and pocket ability of the camera which places it between my iphone and my expensive Canon Camera! thanks for sharing
Awesome Walkthrough, Excellent, your good girl!!!!
Excellent. Thank you!!!
Excellent, I won't be reading the manual. Many thanks @Shutterbug 101
Excellent overview. Thank you
Love your content.
You go, girl ! ❤
Thanks. This video really helped me.
Thank you. Very helpful. Nice job.
Such a helpful video. Answered all of my questions!
Great presentation!
Please use a zoom so we can see which dials you are pressing.
Thanks
Thanks for such a thorough walkthrough! I just wish I could see the screen a little better as you are using it. Otherwise, I cannot wait to get my camera shipped so I can start playing with it!
Informative video. Thankyou.
Thank you very much for the thorough walk through; I found it most helpful.
Have been considering buying a tough camera for a while and this video is he BEST I've seen in talking me through the layout and functions. Thank you! would be great if you could show examples of how it performs in low light and video mode in another video as these areas are of particular interest for me. Excellent presentation will watch again and again to try and remember all the detailed information you give,
So happy my video helped you! The video in between the example stills were actually taken with the TG-6, so as yoh can see it captures color and detail fairly well. I will be releasing a video in the next week covering the attachments you can purchase to benefit the cameras features (telephoto, ring light, and flash diffuser) where I also demonstrate how the camera captures an image in a typical low lit indoor everyday situation without any lighting assistance, with flash, with ring light, and with flash diffuser. Keep an eye out! And let me know if you have any other questions or requests!
I just bought this camera and I'm still getting used to it. With that in mind it's pretty easy to get low light photos without full knowledge of the camera. Of course that assumes you have experience taking photos.
I did officially post a video showing how the camera does in an everyday low lighting indoors situation along with attachments that can help. You can find it in the "Top 3 Attachments for the Olympus TG-6", link at the end of this walkthrough or under my Video tab on my page!
Excellent...many thanks.
Excellent! Thanks
Well done.👍
one little comment. in this video the camera takes up about 1/9th of the area of the youtube screen - and nothing else is important to see - why not zoom in on the camera so the viewer can actually read the camera viewscreen?
Thank you so very much!
I have the tg5 and its amazing.
angelikus the Tough cameras are by far my favorite waterproof/shockproof cameras :)
I was lucky enough to pick one of these up for $300 at my local store. They had lost the battery box and everything else. The battery from older model TG cameras and the TG tracker is exactly the same. I have a TG tracker so my battery slipped right into the TG6, yay. 🇦🇺
Great video !!! Thank you so much !!
You mentioned an app for the wifi sharing to smartphone...Is the app OM Image Share? I cannot find one by Olympus.
Correct! ruclips.net/video/jVGSp_AinKw/видео.html
I I just wanted to let you know that as informative as your video is, having that background music that sounds more like noise than anything else is not only a distraction, but also makes your commentary less clear to understand.
Thanks, you do a great job ;-)
Tell me sister.. I have an issue with custom modes ... if I finish setting in c1 for example it's not saved when I turn camera to other mode then cone back again to c mode I lose my previous setting..plz tell me how to save my setting
Are you going through the menu to set your C mode options?
You have excellent information and knowledge about this camera. However, I found this video to be so frustrating because I could not get close enough ( to the camera ) to actually see what you were talking about. Too much empty space in the frame . And not enough of the actual camera. It would have been so much more useful if I could actually see what you were talking about. Thanks for you efforts.
awesome!!
Awesome presentation, thank you 🙏 have you made a video about accessories for this camera?
Came here to find out why my macro was getting blurry every time I depressed the shutter button. Solved it. Thank you. Great video and I learned quite a few things. One question: Why do you think Olympus Tough has no protective cover for its lens? My old camera had a shield that clicked together, as soon as the camera was shut off.
It is due to the underwater feature to the camera. The automatic closing shutters are released by springs, which will rust if taken into the water and rust only spreads. Glad you found my video helpful!
I'm going to Aruba in less than two weeks and I don't know much about cameras. Would you recommend this for parasailing and snorkeling? And is it possible to leave this on camera mode ( for the sole purpose of not taking videos)?
I would absolutely recommend this camera! And yes if you set it on auto, it will take photos. You will still have the ability for video with the small red button, but if you just want photos, just avoid pushing it.
Thanks for the walk through - very helpful (and I have a Tg 5 but very similar)!
Is this better than. Go pro camera’s and what is the largest sd card you can use with this thank you great videos ❤
Thank you
Thank you for this. Is there a way to increase display text/graphic size using INFO? Older eyes, hard to read in some conditions....
Unfortunately there is no way to adjust font on this camera :( I know, those tiny screens can be a real pain sometimes.
O.K. la he seguido con los subtítulos en español. Thank you.
Thanks!
Much appreciated 🙂
Does having the GPS on work of camera is lost and we need to locate and find it 🤔
It does not, just for location tagging to images. However, with that new Apple AirTag coming out you could probably put one on it or it’s strap!
@@Shutterbug101 thanks
Thanks for sharing! Very informative! am planning to use it as a travel camera. Any idea, up to which focal length the aperture stays at F2.8 or lower?
Great question! The camera itself doesn't give a focal distance on screen when you zoom, but I found that every tough to the zoom lever to zoom out made it go up .1 - .3 stops, so it does not take long for it to stay at 2.8.
I am struggling importing RAW images to my phone, is there a way around that?
Hi . is this camera can change shutter speed on video mode , example HD 60 fps and 1/120 shutter speed. thanks :)
I do not believe so from what I can tell by looking through it. If you can, it is extremely limited.
This was a great video. And, that comment is coming from someone who has been using cameras (film and digital) for over 50 years. Thanks very much. I just got the TG-6, in red, and it is charging up right now. I'll start using it tomorrow. One question - I read that Olympus (now OM) may not make this line of cameras in the future. Do you think that is true?
I'm thinking about buying this camera. The red one. Will it give me a problem if I insert a terabyte memory card?
Hi.
is there a setting so you can´t take photos without the SD card inserted ??
As far as I can see looking through the menu, no there is not
How do you view all stored pictures? When I tap the arrow button, I only see the latest.
You can use your directional pad to go forward or backward through the photographs, otherwise if you would like to view them as thumbnails, move your zoom lever to the W one time to view in a grid.
Great 101 on this camera. As I go Off Road in the Outback of Australia I’m really interested in the rugged but also the GPS. Can you advise how quickly it can acquire satellite location. Thanks
Good video . How long does the battery last with GPS on & GPS off ? For spare battery. What battery do you recommend will work with this camera? Olympus battery are very expensive . Have you got a video to show how to connect with the iPhone app ?
Can you use a external microphone with the TG 6 ?
Thanks so much for your video - really helpful! Can you please help with an issue I have - the flash on the TG6 won't go off in dark conditions on Auto, leaving me with many blurred photos (and, yes, it is on auto flash) - any suggestions? Many thanks!
Hi again, I have what I would think is an easy question. I have been taking some photos to try out the camera. I am mainly using it for winter sports, so outside winter setting. I want to use auto mode so that I can just pick up and take my photos without any complicated setup. I shot a number of pictures in “auto mode in “LN” for image quality. I emailed a picture to friends and sent myself a copy. Unless I emailed the photo in actual size the picture quality was poor. I am wondering if I should create a custom setting that will allow me to take pictures that will have better quality for emailing. With my old Sony Cybershot X20 (which the battery latch broke on and I purchased the TG-6 to replace it) I was able to email pictures in medium size and they were clear, crisp and full of detail which I only got the same quality if I emailed the TG-6 photos in actual size and it was a larger file to email.
I also read in the manual that I have to format my memory card prior to use with the TG-6. Is there a reason for doing that? I have pictures from my Cybershot on the memory card I have been using in the TG-6. I have a new memory card I will test out tomorrow and format and take some pictures but it doesn’t seem to make sense that I would need to format the SD card.prior to use with the TG-6.
Lastly some of the photos that I took this week came out overexposed, and I don’t know why. Pictures taken at the same time with the same camera orientation came out fine. I actually took these photos with the time delay using the remote on my phone so the camera really did not move and the photos were all taken in a 15 minute time frame so there were no changes in lighting.
Thanks very much for any advice you can offer. I do know my cameras well, and use a Canon E06 for photos when I’m not on the go doing a sport where I need a smaller, rugged point and shoot camera. I researched all the comparable cameras for rugged point and shoot application and the Olympus seemed to be the best camera for my needs. I really like the features which you explained so well, and think this is the right camera for me, but I just have to figure out the best way to set it up so that I get the clearest photos. If I have to set up a custom setting for winter landscapes and people how would you recommend I create the best custom setup?
Thanks for your time and advice!
Carole
When it comes to emailing images, it can be tricky especially with high quality files. Email tends to compress images and makes them lose clarity. Whenever I send images and want them to be at their full resolution, I use Google Drive or Drop Box.
When it comes to SD cards, you don't want to take a card used in a Sony and then use it in an Olympus without formatting, that is correct. The reason for that is you want the card to have one connecting to a camera at a time. Whenever you put that card in a new camera, it is making another introduction to recognize the files, which means a whole set of folders and software for the camera to utilize. This in time can cause issues with communication between the camera and the card and cause corruption or lock you out completely because it indicates there was an error. So whenever you save your photos to your computer/hard drive/cloud system, and your going to go take new photos, you can format it to keep it running new. However, this shouldn't effect your image quality. Which I recommend switching the quality to Large Fine.
For the over exposure, in the photos you were taking, was there a subject that was dark or wearing dark clothes? this could be due to metering, where it meters for that dark area and brightens everything up, thus making it over exposed. This can be fixed by using P mode rather than Auto and turning the exposure down to about -1.0.
For custom winter scapes, I don't have an answer for you on that just yet. However, there are a lot of people who use this camera specifically for the custom mode and I am sure you will find something just by looking up "Olympus TG-6 custom mode for snow"
This camera really is the best rugged camera out there, and if I can help in any way to answer questions, I will do so!
I’d the $50 dust cover for lens needed or dies that ring you unscrewed protect the lens? Thanks
The ring does nothing to protect the lens, you would need to get the attachment that has the lens cap option.
Thanks for the great video. On my TG-6 I can't figure out how to use the built in flash while in Aperture Priority mode. Is it disabled or am I missing something? Thanks
I figured out what I was doing wrong - I had the pro capture option turned on and that was preventing me from being able to use the flash in A mode (and other modes as well).
Glad you figured out the issue! And thank you for sharing the solution for others!
Where can I find information about how to use the Raw data and which program on my laptop can I take the most advantage of with raw data?
I have it in my to do list to explain Raw and Jpegs in more detail so keep an eye out! As for a good program, the best program to invest in is Adobe Lightroom CC, but it is a subscription you have to pay for monthly or yearly. If you don’t know if you will use the program as much as you would like starting out, you can go to a Best Buy or Staples and do a one time purchase of Adobe Photoshop Elements.
TG 5 or TG 6 ? Here in Thailand the "old" TG 5 is selling at 100 US $ less than the TG 6. Do you think the upgrades on the TG 6 are worth the extra 100 dollars? any thoughts? thanks
Well considering that they both have the same sensor and processor, there won't be a difference in quality, and they will take the same attachments, the only pros going to the TG-6 is more options when it comes to creative shooting modes (like macro or under water) and the GPS switch is internal instead of the top like the TG-5. They will have the same layout and menus as well. So if your not primarily getting it for a lot of macro shots, go for the TG-5 while it's available!
Very good walk through. Best one I have found yet. Just got my camera the other day and I have been playing with it. It does seem to wash out all the colors when in Auto. My iPhone has better color rendition. Any suggestions on how to correct this?
On Auto, there is unfortunately very little you can change. However, if you use the P (Program) mode on the dial which is very similar to Auto, you can hit the OK button, the top option will give you the ability to change how the color shows in your shots. I would set it to option 2 for vivid and see if you like that better!
@@Shutterbug101 Thank you! I'll give that a try
I have a TG3 and I want to buy a TG6, can you use the OI share app to record video in live view?
Yes!
Thanks the OI share does not record video in live view with my TG-3
How do you know when it’s fully charged?
When you plug your micro USB into the camera, an orange light will light up on top by the power button. Once the orange light turns off, it should be fully charged.
While I love this Olympus TG-6…I really wish they would bring back the “Picture-In-Picture of the TG-3…the idea of including a date-stamp on my photo is a plus for me which is why I keep buying the TG-3 used online.
A lot of cameras got rid of the date-time stamp unfortunately. However, the TG-6 does still have a time stamp option.
Video good thanhks your
This has been so informative- and I’ll watch again (and again) but now I’m trying to connect to WiFi and don’t recall you showing that process. I have n older Tough waterproof and had no issues but have watched other You-Tube with no help. I don’t get a QR code when I press the Info button. I don’t see what button to touch on back of camera…. Help! Please!
That was quite informative. Could you please make a video on the camera's performance in low light, may be some pictures and videos. That would be helpful.
I will add that to my list, however, because this camera does not excel in low light, it would be showing more of why you shouldn't buy it. Now, this camera has several attachments you could use like a ring light or flash diffuser to help with low light situations, which may be more helpful so I will see about making a video comparing the effects with and without attachments once I can get a hold if all of them.
@@Shutterbug101 Sure that would be helpful as i am planning to buy it.
Its certainly an impressive camera no doubt of that. I currently have a Nikon Coolpix AW130 and it has a built in Map. Ive seen some Olympus photos with an adjoing map on screen, can you explain tbis pls.
This is usually older models with built in GPS. The GPS feature has been nixed on most new models due to the lack of use of the GPS feature and the rise of complaints of how the GPS kills the battery faster.
I've been considering getting this camera for a while now. I loved your review. I just have one question. Ive heard that while filming the zoom makes a loud noise that overwhelms the sound of what one is filming, is this true?
In my experience, no, I have not heard of this being an issue with the TG-6. Make sure you purchase from someone who works hand in hand with the manufacturer, so there is no risk in getting a grey market model
@@Shutterbug101 thanks for your reply. I will definitely get this camera soon
How do you change the language on the camera.
In the menu>wrench>third option down with the icon where the head is speaking you can change the language!
Mine is making a somewhat loud buzzing sound when I turn it off. Is that sound normal?
Definitely not. There may be something wrong with the lens motor inside the camera. If the camera is brand new, exchange it right away. If you have had this camera and it is a new development, you can send it out for repair. If you have a warranty on the camera, even better!
@@Shutterbug101 Thank you!! I just got it.
When in video mode if you zoom in or out it is very noisy
It shouldn't pick up in the video recording, but you may hear it when in use.
