  • The perfect atmospheric song in a video game doesn't exist-
    bone rattling begins
    The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is known for its incredible music, but check out why I think the forest temple has the perfect track, and even though it seems so simple, a huge amount of thought went into this, and Koji Kondo deserves a ton of praise. By the end, you'll understand why the forest temple theme is the perfect atmospheric song in a video game.

      The music is both creepy and soothing, it may be one of those vibes to some, or both to others like me, but I love it.
      The part that gets me most are the vocal sections at the latter portion of the song, I could never determine if it was an echo of Link's voice, or just some extra voice set used as an instrument.

    The Forest Temple is far more creepier than the Shadow Temple, imo. It’s not as a dark as the macabre theme of the Shadow Temple, but it feels like it truly had been violated by malevolent forces- more so than any of the other temples (not counting the Great Deku Tree). The haunting music, the atmosphere inside the temple where it feels like a haunted house, and the wallmasters that are waiting to pounce on you. And who could forget Phantom Ganon? He felt like he was placed there on purpose just to scare the player. It definitely feels like it was the one temple that was truly violated by Ganon.

    It also works story wise. If you call Saria before you get into the temple, she is happy to hear from you then freaks out about she tried to go to the Temple and says it's full of monsters and begs for your help. With that in mind, you almost get a sense that this damn temple is taunting you, saying that you will never save your friend.

      You should try to play the forest temple theme over any of the zonai labrynths, lost woods, or typhlo ruins. Very fitting, given their origin. The forest temple tests your courage moreso, because if you notice, all the enemies are likely based on Link's fears. 2 of which debut in this temple that you (likely) only heard about until then: the stalfoes and poes. The much larger dekubabas are designed to make you feel like you're still a child despite becoming an adult outwardly. There are 2 or 3 rooms that mirror rooms from the great deku tree, and some rooms have the enemy type and placement being the same from the gdt. You know what's nuttier? The court yards symbolize and foreshadow the time travel for the bottom of the well; the three hearts found underneath representing the three heart containers you gained from the dungeons as a child. The vines, nature, represents childhood, the ladder, adult.

    It's so brilliant how the Poes' laughter synth sequence starts to actually add in lower, more human timbres from time to time - I never see anyone commenting on that, but that's the part that especially makes the song for me. It almost sounds like the sequence is warping into this ghoulish cackling or babbling. If you listen, it's just every now and then that those sections occur - it's like a raspy, shouty vocalization. Even today, I find the song to be sort of psychedelic above all else - like a track Aphex Twin would have dropped around this time or sooner.

  • @kentmont
    @kentmont 3 года назад +7

    It’s also worth noting that, given the track is made up of “airy” sounds, the forest temple was originally meant to be called the “wind temple”. Hence its name in Twilight Princess

    This has always been one of my favorite BGMs, it's like it's not just unsettling, but unsettling in a very specific, "liminal space" kind of way. Like at the same time, compared to other areas of the forest that are full of life, it's empty - but also like it's a place that should be empty, but there's something else going on, some other presence there just outside of your perception. The twisting and untwisting hallway give it an otherworldly quality and all of that's just highlighted by the music, it's excellent.

    To me the music of the forest temple holds an unspoken foreboding tempered with an eerie calm. Serving as both a grim reminder and a gentle advisor that this forest is no longer the safe haven it once was, and not only is the forest dangerous but that this inner sanctum which you intrude upon is even more so.

    Amazing, I just looked up ‘why is forest temple best’ hoping to find exactly this.. I couldn’t agree with you more, emotionally it was incredibly deep and atmospherically gripping from the very first time I felt it back in the day, and still holds up the exact same today which is insane to me but beautiful. What an influential theme yet so simple! It gave and still gives a truly other-wordly experience of ethereal proportions worthy of a deep mysterious forest temple in my favorite game ever.

It's my favorite track of music from any video game ever. I was also really happy to know that I'm not the only one who finds the music relaxing. I won't deny that it is spooky, but it isn't scary in the same sense that the Shadow Temple music makes you feel like the temple wants to kill you. Rather it is more mysterious, haunting, and awe inspiring like you are entering into a world much larger than yourself with centuries of history behind it. Listening to the Forest Temple is a profoundly spiritual experience for me and when I'm feeling overwhelmed by the anxieties of life it can immediately calm me down.
