That and the theme isn’t anti muslim either way. Many don’t even have a problem with it. Awesome spot on video. I must inform you, and those who think that the replaced vocals came from the Shadow Temple, are only partially correct; It's not that Koji Kondo re-used the shadow temple composition/song, he reused the digital midi instrument patch. As in, I bet his thought process was "If I have to remove the vocal sample, I have to substitute it with other vocals. Therefor I should just write something and play it with digital vocal patch since I've been using that a lot anyways and it's been very useful." Other compositions from that era of his work feature the exact same vocal midi instrument sound. So, rather than "taking from" the shadow temple, he really just fell back on his trusty tools at hand, and we the players are very familiar with this one. Vocals make the song sound less square. It's too bad the chant is controversial, but good on him and the team for acting pretty well on their changes.

I think you made an excellent case for the religious side of things here. For years I thought "Kondo-san is Japanese, he was probably just looking for some slightly unnerving samples." But you had a great example for it actually being the Gorons praying while in captivity and having a leader among them rise their voice above the rest by using real world explanations.

I think the pivot came from the concept that the Gorons were being sacrificed to Volvagia. When they lost the thematic concept of the Gorons chanting or praying for deliverance, they went with a focus on the sacrifice aspect, which unfortunately kind of treads the same ground that the Shadow Temple’s theme makes unique.

  • @SeanLaMontagne

There is clearly a lot of research that went into this, but i want to clarify some things. The "chanting" itself isn't scary, it's probably taken from the big mosque in mekkah, it's just a routinely sound, when heard in its proper context it's holy, infact a lot of people cry when they hear it in person. but when accompanied by those drum notes, and that background sound, and those establishing high notes, the chanting's quarter notes stick out, and that reverb makes the entire temple feel very imposing. When it was reproduced with midi sounds, there were no quarter notes and it just sounded way off, and way less imposing.

@@SaveDataTeam my train of thought was "hmmm, I've been everywhere except that portion of the map" so, I completely ignored Navi, therefore, never kmew I should head to kakariko again. Glad I did that, Shadow temple is probably the one I hate the most and the portion to get to it is kinda boring, on the other hand, I loved every single aspect of Gerudo's Valley to Spirit temple

Yeah, the well going into shadow is not nearly as good as “hey, here’s a whole new culture/large map, and you have to fight your way through this gerudo compound before making it through a cursed desert!”

I have one of the first cartridges. The chat version was THE version I grew up playing and listening to. The crescent moon was also the symbol I remember drawing on a home made mirror shield. While the changes saddened me, I understand why they were made. Great video series!!

It's a Muslim phrase in that the phrase itself comes straight out of the Islamic religious text. Similarly "I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength" is a specifically Christian phrase as it comes directly from a Bible verse. Obviously it's in the English language but thats not what's being referred to. The origin of the phrase is being referred to and the phrases in the OG fire temple came directly out of the Muslim religious text, therefore it can be considered specifically a Muslim phrase.

Zak you just sent me on a wild hunt. I played 1.2 as a kid and I remember the changed version of the song, but also distinctly remember the crescent moon symbol on the blocks and mirror shield. I was able to find sites and videos that note this symbol change was made for the game cube version of the game, not 1.2. Phew, I was about to spend the night thinking about it.

2:53 do those Nintendo of America censorship rules apply in Japan or just America?
As far as I know, the fire temple music is the original on all Japan cartridges and 1.2 on all PAL releases. So north america is the only place you could find both.

In my research I didn’t see anything indicating they changed it in Japan, and I’m pretty sure PAL only got the version 1.2. So I think you are correct that the US is the only one with both versions! 😊

I always interpreted the sounds in the 1.2 version of the Fire Temple as an intense power flowing through the temple rather than something ethereal. I really appreciate the build up in the 1.2 version and think that part is really intense, but I find the chants more fitting thematically in the old version and more pleasant throughout the whole track.
I feel like one of the few people who enjoys newer version more, and most of that is due to how intense the "ethereal" chant is. I bet an experiment mixing elements of the two would turn out phenomenal.

The sampled track is not a "chant" but the Muslim call to prayer: the azaan.
As a Muslim and Zelda fan I am very glad they took it out. It is disappointing to see so many comments referring to "chanting" making the place feel foreboding, playing in to the orientalist trope that Islam is an inherently foreboding, mysterious, or sinister religion. Using the word "chant" instead of "recite" is also contributing to this.
They could have achieved this unsettling feeling through creating jibberish chanting in the edited version. I do appreciate your take that the Gorons could be praying, but I do not think that was the intended effect unfortunately- especially seeing as the Islamic crescent and star symbol was found in the Gerudo temple, and their religion was considered to be evil by the Hylians (the Gerudo, although one of my favorite of the Zelda races, also plays on orientalist views on Muslim women and the concept of the harem but that is a separate topic).
Considering the events just a few years after the game was released, I am happy Nintendo removed references to Islam to avoid associating Islamic prayers and symbols with scaring impressionable kids. On top of that, it is considered disrespectful to mix the call to prayer with music for the majority of Muslims.
Anyway, cool video! Found your channel today and I love the series.
