Older films often look awesome on 4k, I saw a UHD of Ghostbusters 2, it looked amazingly detailed and colourful. Have not seen the first one yet, I should get it. Saw it in a cinema when I was a child, I miss 80’s style movies.
Jim D I was just watching the extended cut/ the first cut of Blues Brothers and I 💯 agree. Movies were made so well and then they would say “do we shorten it or not”. Really wish more films would be made with those sensibilities.
I actually picked up the 35th anniversary 4K Steelbook from Amazon in June 2019, can't recommend this enough. The 2 films in 4K + the 2 Blu-rays and an exclusive 5th disk with extra special features. If you are a ghostbusters fan, this is absolutely the set to get. if you can find it. (I've owned Ghostbusters on video, DVD region 1, DVD region 2, Blu-ray x2 (bought ghostbusters and ghostbusters 2 in a single box) and then upgraded to 4K. All I can say is "amazing picture, amazing soundmix for a 80s film).
I bought a Panasonic 4K Blu Ray player about a year and s half ago. It's only December last year I bought my first two 4K HDR movies which are in my Christmas movie collection do I only watch them in the month of December. Most of my movies are standard Blu Ray disc until then. Anyway a few days I got Fantastic four 2015 (I know s lot of people don't like the film but I like the film) and Venom on 4K HDR Blu Ray. I haven't had the time to watch the film's yet because I'm working all week but I'll be watching both film's on Saturday. This is only the beginning and I'm going to buy mostly 4K Blu rays from now on.
Just bought the Sony 4K remaster versions. I’m watching number one and the color is better but still grainy. I’m kinda disappointed with it so far. Sound is very good!
The grain is from the film, if you remove it then you lose fine details. You are free to run it through some filters to remove some of the grain with media players but it will make some of the fine details go away
Color is better, there is more detail, sound is supreme, but I wonder how much grain was due to filming with faster speed film or poor quality stock? Even in scenes without effects, the grain almost waves to the audience with it's presence... but I take it in as part of the atmosphere of the movie itself.
Hey Jeff! Thank that viewer for the review material, that"s awesome. After your report on the HDR usage, I think that I will be picking these up on 4k disc. I do like HDR! I look forward to experiencing the Atmos soundtracks. I just purchased the first one via your Amazon link. It will be here Friday, look forward to giving it a watch! Have a great one man!
Loved seeing this video I picked these up 6 months ago they go on sale pretty often on Amazon. Can't wait for the karate kid review I've thought about getting it as well. What I really want is caddy shack on 4k.
Good video! I was curious if you know if after Sony released the "Mastered in 4k" blu-ray (non 4k) if the blu-ray included with your reviewed 4k is "Mastered in 4k"? Also there is a new ghostbusters 3 film release on blu-ray (1,2 & afterlife). Do you think this would contain the original blu-rays or the Mastered in 4k versions?
Props to the fan that sent you these, specifically came here to see your thoughts. Pretty sure this vid is going to get A LOT of hits in the coming days, if not already!
Are the blu rays that come with them the 4k remasters? I have both of these, but haven't checked the regular blu rays yet. Also, worth a mention that the included digital copies are 4K, but can be downgraded on most services (ie Vudu) if the watcher prefers. Me personally, I'll always go 4K if it's an option.
The previous 2014 Blu-rays were already "Mastered in 4K" to begin with and that is what is included with these. There was only 1 previous release of the first film on Blu-ray before the 4K master and Ghostbusters II didn't get a Blu-ray before 2014. These 4K UHDs were just the first time those transfers were released in their native resolution.

Honestly I feel like that’s a problem with pretty much every older movie, at least for me anyway. Atmos definitely makes it better but I still need to turn the volume up pretty high to be able to hear everyone clearly.
Mogwai is great in this movie and I love the ending where the great white eats robert shaw. Did you know proton packs were made out of painted bread bins apparently slimer got zapped for not eating his crusts. Another fact is that b.a.baracas's mohawk hair was glued on from over a dozen waxed butt cracks. Who was be a actor hey!!! 🤔.
I just watched them both back to back and the first one has a LOT of grain and it didn’t feel like a 4k but the second one is much better, sharper, less grain and it did feel like a good upgrade.
I've got mixed feelings about this particular version of the first film Having seen this movie around 200 times I was hoping for a crystal clear remaster here, yet for the most part the grain is a real glittery fog to fight through and is majorly distracting. I never noticed grain being so prominent on my video or dvd versions though they were dark and a bit blurry. The opening library scene is difficult to watch until getting used to all that grain. There were a LOT of things that were much clearer/ brighter throughout - except for some scenes that look real bad compared ( Ghostbusters in jail looks the worst ) - I noticed things I hadn't seen before clearly in Dana's kitchen, her apartment really opened up, patterns on her cushions, the Gargoyles on the roof look clearer even though it's grainy but pleasantly so. After the jail scene image improves a lot Glimpses of the quality I was hoping for and that look particularly beautiful that I wish the rest of the film was matched with: When Dana opens the fridge, that brief _Zool!_ moment is perfect Dana watching the Ghostbusters commercial looks good too Her armchair sliding bunching up the carpet as she is dognapped for a brief moment is super clear Afer the jail scene when Louis turns up outside the apartment building the image gets much better compared. I've seen clips of newer much better versions than this on youtube, so I ' m going to find where to get a copy. Don't get this, it' s not good enough
I know this review is 1.5 years old, but I just stumbled upon it now :-) In regards to why the weaker film has a nice slipcover, when the original and much better film doesn’t, I only have one thought = WTF?.. Seriously, that shit ain’t right. And no, it’s not just yours that doesn’t have it, it’s all of them. The original, for some dumb and unjustified reason, never got a slipcover. That sucks. Thanks for the review, I’ll be getting these :-)
Think many were expecting too much of this old looking film. Not sure it ever did look good? It always seemed grain heavy to me. At worst its a 3/5 transfer quality but still an improvement over the Blu Rays & worth it on a steep sale.
Amazon Germany has the 5 disc 4K steelbook edition for €30 Euros (about $33.25 USD) straight from them. I'm hoping to pick that up, since I got all 3 Ghostbusters movies digitally in 4K (I have no idea how I got the 2016 version because I didn't even buy it)
I like HDR but how close is it to the director’s original vision? It reminds me of what you said about HDR in animation like Disney’s Aladdin. The colors are more vivid than originally intended by the animators. If that’s the case with live action movies as well then I don’t know what a purist is supposed to think. I see a lot of director approved transfers so I guess that’s what we have to rely on.
I notice unless i see pictures or cap from 2 different formats then i cant really notice a change. saw a compare to a movie awhile back and just notice blu ray shows more detail cause sharper then dvd. so gotta just know how u see blu ray for any movie and watch new format and really decide what kinda details u like of changes with new format any. i not quite at 4k yet stil slow to blu ray for any movies i real want or like now. so i get dvd for now unless combo to blu ray any.
You should have a separate channel that does the same reviews for digital quality releases! That would be awesome! 👍 Ghostbusters digitally is the second most grainiest movie ever besides Home alone.
After hearing "how bad" the grain is, I went straight to Amazon and bought the disc on purpose. I'm glad Sony didn't go apeshit, trying to clean it up. Would have ruined that 80s feel the film had
My double DVD of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 have a weird miss print on the slip cover. The back of the cover says the the first movie is full screen and the second one is widescreen. But the individual cases and the actual movies are both widescreen.
When that "green slime" slipcase gift set was first released in 2005 that was a big controversy back then because many people weren't going to buy it when the specs were revealed but then people who got their hands on it reported both films being in widescreen. Some speculated at the time that it was a misprint while others claim that Sony changed their mind at the last minute due to the backlash but never updated the packaging. Sony were known at the time for having a lot of fullscreen only DVD releases so it wouldn't have shocked me if that was their original plan. Either way, subsequent pressings after the initial run in 2005 have the correct specs on the packaging.
Damn, the top of the box says blue ray mastered in 4K but in the descriptions it says features are 1080P with 5.1 DTS-HD. WTF? Did I buy the wrong ones?
I have 4K and Blu ray versions ...4K is so grainy to the point of annoying, and please I understand why some films are grainy, but when it comes to pure enjoyment of entertainment without (less) annoyance of grain I will always pick Blu -ray version. I you like seeing more grain please choose 4K. Seriously a lot of 4K editions are so overrated. Actually after this experience I am holding back from buying more 4K titles. (Unless there is something outstanding released)
I was going to ask how they compare to the Netflix versions in 4k , but they're gone already . I only got to see part of the fist Ghostbuster movie , but wow , the difference ...
mike k they look way better. Netflix has some really bad video quality even compared to other streaming sites. If you were blown away by the digital, from personally experience. The physical version is just breathtaking. I honestly always hated the terror dog bursting through the door for how it looked and in 4K it actually works.
I have the Blu-ray 1&2 set you mentioned and was so excited to put them in and watch in the “best quality ever”. BUT!... I have to say, this movie is best viewed on film or on standard dvd. Only because it’s actually TOO detailed! To the point where everything looks so fake! For example the hell dog breaking loose in the city. I stopped watching at that point and threw in my old dvds and they actually looked better. The Blu-ray’s just ruined the movie for me. Never meant to be seen in this high resolution obviously. Of course all the scenes without special effects look better on Blu-ray for sure, but why would I want the special effects scenes to look more unrealistic?! I feel if the Blu-ray’s were this bad then the 4ks would be even worse. Just my opinion. Back to the future was a similar situation. The entire feel of the movies were changed. Not good!
35mm projection in the theaters would be somewhere between 2.5-4K equivalent resolution. It was meant to be seen in hi res, because it was hi res, but of course the special fx were limited in their time.
You say "film or standard DVD" as if the resolution of those 2 formats were in any way remotely comparable. A Blu-ray or 4K UHD disc is FAR closer to what you would see projected in a theater than a DVD is. If you blew up a DVD onto a large theater size screen, it would look like low video resolution, digital artifacted dog ass. The entire purpose of high resolution video formats is to bring home cinemas ever closer to the resolution and detail that you would find in a cinema. It's not to "improve" the way a movie looks, it is to bring it closer in video resolution to how the actual 35mm source material already looks. People have become so accustomed to watching old, crusty, low res DVDs that they forget what film actually looks like. Where do you think the image detail in a Blu-ray comes from? It's not something thats "applied" to the film, it's something that already exists in the original film elements and is being brought out in the digital video transfer due to the film being scanned at a much higher resolution.
Hey man, I subscribe to your channel plus a couple like yours. Was it you that was looking for Wish Upon? I just saw new copies on Blu-ray + DVD combo pack for $2.88 at Big Lots. No slip cover. Unrated Version.
I’d say the 4K Blu-ray would be better. But the Apple TV might be comparable to the standard Blu-ray in terms of quality. Some of the Apple TV 4K stuff is slick though.
I have both. The Dolby Vision on the Apple 4K is better than the HDR10 on the 4K blu ray. The 4K disc has slightly more detail than the ATV stream but there's not a lot in it. The stream is closer in quality to the 4K disc than it is to the blu ray. Sound is as always better on physical but the ATV also has Atmos so again the gap is smaller than it might be. My 4K blu ray was £20 and my ATV4K version was £5. Disc is maybe 10% better quality.
I can tell streaming is getting more watchers due to media being donated to places more and stores try get rid of back stock of physical media. it still early for streaming some but over time it gonna be a mix i think.
Nope, not worth it.... it's not "TRUE 4K" Grainy as heck.... Unfortunately movies back then CANNOT be mastered in 4k... I bought them anyway cause I'm a huge GB fan.... but was rather disappointed the movies were NOT 4K by any means...I played them both on a 55 inch 4K UHD TV...didn't compare to the 4K movies from 2019
Looking at other reviews the video is garbage si I'm wondering if he's got a deal with Sony cause he tries to talk up Sony so much but it's not real 4k
Older films often look awesome on 4k, I saw a UHD of Ghostbusters 2, it looked amazingly detailed and colourful. Have not seen the first one yet, I should get it. Saw it in a cinema when I was a child, I miss 80’s style movies.

I had them on Beta as well.
GB 1 & 2 were the first 4K titles I bought back in July/2016 when I first went 4K. They are great
It was shockingly bad on standard blu ray might have to upgrade.

Wonder what effect Dolby vision will add on the box set release.
I wish they'd rerelease the complete animated series from the 80's!!!
@Travis McDowell There was a German SD on Blu-Ray release for the whole show, but I agree, there should be an international one with upscaling.
I had to buy these agin for the 4K steelbook versions. Looks amazing on the shelf!
Do a 4k review on boyz in the hood
Who still has that DVD double set with the book in it
Are the blu rays that come with them the 4k remasters? I have both of these, but haven't checked the regular blu rays yet. I do plan on getting the Ghostbusters trilogy on 4K Blu-ray.
It maybe a worth an upgrade, But I already own The All of The Ghostbusters movies on Regular Blu-rays though 🤷

I just watched them both back to back and the first one has a LOT of grain and it didn’t feel like a 4k but the second one is much better, sharper, less grain and it did feel like a good upgrade.
4K should have grain. Film has grain. You see a movie shot on film in a higher resolution, you get more grain.
I've got mixed feelings about this particular version of the first film
Having seen this movie around 200 times I was hoping for a crystal clear remaster here, yet for the most part the grain is a real glittery fog to fight through and is majorly distracting. I never noticed grain being so prominent on my video or dvd versions though they were dark and a bit blurry.
The opening library scene is difficult to watch until getting used to all that grain.
There were a LOT of things that were much clearer/ brighter throughout - except for some scenes that look real bad compared ( Ghostbusters in jail looks the worst ) - I noticed things I hadn't seen before clearly in Dana's kitchen, her apartment really opened up, patterns on her cushions,
the Gargoyles on the roof look clearer even though it's grainy but pleasantly so. After the jail scene image improves a lot
Glimpses of the quality I was hoping for and that look particularly beautiful that I wish the rest of the film was matched with:
When Dana opens the fridge, that brief _Zool!_ moment is perfect
Dana watching the Ghostbusters commercial looks good too
Her armchair sliding bunching up the carpet as she is dognapped for a brief moment is super clear
Afer the jail scene when Louis turns up outside the apartment building the image gets much better compared.
The ensuing scene of him entering her apartment when he is the keymaster and she's the gatekeeper, that shot of her with her apartment wall blown out is beautiful. Perfect
As Saving The Day kicks in it all gets better, lightning striking the building beautiful, rooftop with Dana and Louis as lightning strikes, awesome
Ghostbusters entering Dana's blown out apartment as the camera pulls away,
Dana and Louis transforming so crystal clear and vibrant
The whole rooftop Gozer everything is how this all should look
Mr Staypuft's entrance, Ghostbusters fighting him the explosion and his gloop hitting Walter Peck, rescuing Dana from the dog husk, all excellent
Obviously there are different film stocks used due to budget with the best being used for the effects shots and ending, regardless,
if the worst scenes could be remastered to match these really good scenes, without such a jump, that is what this movie deserves.
I've seen clips of newer much better versions than this on youtube, so I ' m going to find where to get a copy.
Don't get this, it' s not good enough
My biggest problem with ghostbusters... they didn't at least update the cgi on those damn dogs & how they run... it just looks so bad...

(Unless there is something outstanding released)
Yikes to this opinion.
Do you review documentaries bluerays/UHDs?
I was going to ask how they compare to the Netflix versions in 4k , but they're gone already . I only got to see part of the fist Ghostbuster movie , but wow , the difference ...
mike k they look way better. Netflix has some really bad video quality even compared to other streaming sites. If you were blown away by the digital, from personally experience. The physical version is just breathtaking. I honestly always hated the terror dog bursting through the door for how it looked and in 4K it actually works.
I'm still lovin your intro!!!! 😁🙃
I have the steelbook edition with both films.
I had no idea these even came out.
What do you think about HDR just being a scam as talked about by "Quantum TV"?
Randy Salsman how is it a scam? They must be really dumb if they said that.
maybe they will do a 4 pack in 4k
Love Ghostbusters have one and two on blu ray but not 4k yet
Save your money, not worth upgrade to 4K
Hmmm some scenes look great close up but an equal amount of times i was left disappointed, especially the pan and none close up scenes
Have them on a boxset with like a book from thrift with both on dvd with extras so not quite ready to upgrade , but cool to know what possible.
yep this year Ghostbusters 3
Nice one 😎👍
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I see you've got 'The Hate U Give' in the background - great film.
I Love grain
Hey man, I subscribe to your channel plus a couple like yours. Was it you that was looking for Wish Upon? I just saw new copies on Blu-ray + DVD combo pack for $2.88 at Big Lots. No slip cover. Unrated Version.
I'm more of a streamer so is it worth it to buy them,,,,, say on the Apple TV 4K?
The Apple version of Ghostbusters looks really good with its Dolby Vision.
Scott Tilden .....agreed, streaming services cannot compete with sound or picture quality over 4K discs.
I can tell streaming is getting more watchers due to media being donated to places more and stores try get rid of back stock of physical media. it still early for streaming some but over time it gonna be a mix i think.
its just a dbl pack i already have both on 4k
Nope, not worth it.... it's not "TRUE 4K" Grainy as heck.... Unfortunately movies back then CANNOT be mastered in 4k... I bought them anyway cause I'm a huge GB fan.... but was rather disappointed the movies were NOT 4K by any means...I played them both on a 55 inch 4K UHD TV...didn't compare to the 4K movies from 2019
Boss
Looking at other reviews the video is garbage si I'm wondering if he's got a deal with Sony cause he tries to talk up Sony so much but it's not real 4k
Great, going to upgrade
I dont think Sony does a good job at all
I have to say, as much as I love Ghostbusters, that cover is awful.
I was disappointed of the first film in 4k. It just didn't look so good.
i found them unwatchable and sold them, thanfully i got them very cheap
Bigdaddy Watt how?
