I remember thinking they were dorky figures, and maybe I still feel that way, to an extent. But they certainly created an amazing toy Enterprise... the core that switches power on and off, the sounds, the chairs being faithfully recreated and everything. Got to respect that level of commitment, and also that they stay true to their character style, working with what they like instead of trying to chase the currently hip, cool, popular thing and ending up a lame copy of some better-known thing.^^

The Playmobil Enterprise is out of my price range, but I have an Ecto 1, a Delorean, a Ghostbusters Headquarters, and several of the smaller licensed sets. They're just good, fun toys. They're made well, have tons of play value, and look great.

    • @a.rheser8181

@@sunnyfrisch agreed. They have become more expensive, and are now at the limit of what I (personally) would call fair pricing, unlike LEGO, whose prices just became ridiculous.
True, you can find the Enterprise for 299,- at certain websites and in certain shops. Same as with most of their items. I always wait a few months and then buy their products, did so with BTTF, Ghostbusters, A-Team and will do so again with Knight Rider.

If this was Hasbro it would fallen into another haslab kickstarter at the price of a used car in 6in scale figures, with no figures included.
Overall I think playmobile knows damn well that they are first and foremost a Toy company, and not a movie studio. Cough cough Hasbro cough.
Someone at Hasbro, Mattel and other toys company better follow the playmobile example because there's a good chance these companies can go bankrupt. To which they'll be left wondering where did they go wrong in their decision making.

They are totally nailing it with not just these licenses but toy design in general, with so many companies it's like they've forgotten what toys are at the core. I completely agree about that false expectation "You want Playmobil to do what, are you crazy?". O_o???
I've enjoyed their figures picking up some from each of the waves sometimes, think they've evolved well. Do kind of wish for more "eye twinkle" like their movie characters but it's been a point of contention breaking from the original simple faces. Personally I'd like to see more flourishes like modern Lego in the face prints at least for the licensed sets, think that might help increase their general appeal.

They probably could get the license if they really tried, but with all the competition in Star Wars toys, especially trying to compete against LEGO, it would probably be wise to stay in their corner, and tackle licenses others don’t have, or produce many products for.

Great video, and I 100% agree with the "fun" of putting this together. I was so impressed with the instructions and placing the (amazingly accurate) stickers on the bridge was a labor of love for this classic trek fan. You can really tell that the company LOVES the properties they license, and spare no expense at the "big bet" of making the best toy they can for each and every one. I really hope your video encourages more folks to buy this set. Because, like you, I want a Playmobil scale refit Enterprise!

    • @spacemanspiff3052

Totally agree! Could you just imagine the figures in monster maroon uniforms. Sweet!
That said, I’d love to see them expand the line with baby steps. It would be amazing if Playmobil add a play set of the transporter room and sickbay (also with lights and sounds); including figures like Nurse Chapel, Mr. Kyle, Khan, and maybe a little NOMAD on top of a translucent stand. Playmobil also has add on sets or bundles, like a 3 figure set of a male/female from each department (bonus points for having the figures roughly resemble the DS9 crew from Trials and Tribble-ations), and an alien pack with a Klingon, Romulan, and Gorn. They could even do Galileo Seven with crew. Oh, to dream!!!

The Enterprise here is a thing of beauty but I do think the saucer is a bit cartoonishly thick. However that had to have been the trade-off to making a full, figure-scale bridge so I give that a pass. I have absolutely nowhere to put this but I kinda want one now. Great review!

Love this video. RetroBlasting's production values shine.
There was a Star Trek knock-off-Lego series that came out for the first couple of reboot movies - Kreo. It was right when Lego had lost the patent protection of their bricks' 'studs & tubes' clutch mechanism, and suddenly everyone and their granny were making knock-off Lego-compatible building brick toys. Kreo was Hasbro. Anyway, they had a USS Enterprise where you could open the saucer to reveal seating for about five 'Kreons', their version of Lego Minifigs. There were a few other sets - a USS Vengeance from Into Darkness, a Klingon Bird of Prey from the same film, as well as an Enterprise & Klingon Battle Cruiser set; a shuttlecraft, and then a couple of dioramas. But they looked awful. Not least because the proportions of the JJ-Verse Enterprise are hideous, but because they were trying to do it in Lego to a small scale, which just looks equally awful. Couldn't have sold very well, because they only did those few sets and then the line died.

I have never understood the hate that Playmobil figures get. I have always found them extremely charming, with the perfect blend of minimalist articulation and functionality with the playsets. In contrast, I absolutely despise the design of LEGO minifigs, which I find really ugly (and while LEGO predates Playmobil, the Playmobil figure predates the LEGO figure). While LEGO is the king of building toys, I have always held Playmobil in a higher regard when it comes to creative imaginative play value. Before all the licensing rage, their generic space, pirates, knights, city, farm, etc. playsets were the ultimate playground going back to the 70's.

I didn't have as much Playmobil stuff as a kid than anything else. Probably cause allot of it was generic stuff not tied to a property back then but man that stuff held up. When my mom and I gathered it up and cleaned it up to parcel out to my Brothers' kids it was all in fantastic shape minus some paint applications. Man I loved the Playmobil vehicles. The figures felt weird compared to GI joes back then but damn if you wanted a good ambulance. Patrol car or firetruck toy back then you couldn't go wrong with Playmobil.

You are 100% right that Playmobil doesn't have to bend to the will of fans to have their figures be compatible with other lines, that being said I'm just not keen on the Playmobil figure style. Doesn't mean I disrespect them (The only reason I got the BTTF set is because they were on the cheap side.). I hope not only other companies learn from this and but also Hacklab defenders like a certain Guru of Toys can put a sock in it. I agree. There's nothing wrong with Playmobil's figures. They are as Playmobil as GI Joe figures are GI Joe. Props to them for making such generic figures look so individualistic. In this day of hyper-realistic figures, it's nice to have a toy that looks like a toy, and clearly is doing what it can to look like the real thing at the same time.

I loved Playmobil in the late 70s early 80s , I had the fire engine ,fire station and a police bike and car with the police station , the fire engine was a birthday present ( my birthday is in the first week of November) I must have played with the fire engine none stop throughout November because the presents Santa left were a massive fire station with some figures and a police bike and car each with the driver and s police station with a couple of cops and two baddies I could put into the cell, they were so well made and stood up to real playing , I have to say I love all the new TV stuff Playmobil make and in my opinion Playmobil did the right thing sticking to their long established and successful figure design , the fact that they are super strong and can survive any drop from the bedroom window , playmobil have shown all the other toy companies how it should be done .

RetroBlasting has done some excellent video's in the past, but this is now my new favourite (high praise indeed). I can completely relate to Michaels passion for the franchise and the product. I salute Playmobil for doing a toy that I've yearned for for decades . Fantastic product, I hope it sells well, and another brilliant video! Well done! 😀

I think the ship itself could stand to be a bit bigger, the saucer looks out of proportion and it would have given the chance for a transporter room. Other than that. . .i want this so badly now, i am genuinely impressed and it looks awesome on so many other levels. But. . .a Lego nock off (which i can't remember) did an enterprise for the 2009 movie that also did this, so playmate isn't the first, but definitely has done the best so far! Thanks a lot, because now i really want this XD.

I have the Galoob 3 3/4 scale Enterprise D prototype that includes the bridge, engineering section, medical bay and working transporter room. It’s an amazing toy that sadly never made it to market because of poor ratings of the first two seasons of ST:TNG.
That said, I recently picked up this Playmobil Enterprise and it is a true beauty. As a playset person, and former Galoob designer, it does the Enterprise proud. This thing is a pure piece of art that somehow got made in this sadly declining world of large scale, large tooling toys. Playmobil is the only toy company that knows that playsets still have a place in the hearts of kids and collectors alike.
Thank you for posting this video and echoing my thoughts about this piece and your continued love of playsets.

their pricing is super strange when it comes to unlicensed sets. some of the more mainstream stuff they sell is a bit expensive while more niche stuff can be very cheap.

I bought this amazing Toy last October and my jaw still hits the floor every time I look at it. As a 39 Year old Man and life long Star Trek fan, this is the Toy I dreamed of as a kid. Recently I seen Playmobil teasing the Bird Of Prey on Facebook. So.... that's a thing

You can try to search on toy websites (I mean real toys for kids and not collector websites) if you can find a special offer .
I'm from Germany and the regular price was for the Enterprise on a toy website arround 450 Euro , but many times was the price much lower ... the lowest was 270 Euros (free shipping) .

Kudos for being the first american I hear that so openly and thoroughly appreciates Playmobil. I guess many people in the USA can't come to terms with the figure design (born in 1974, four years before Lego's) because in your country there's no nostalgia for them.

Same!!! This is arguably the greatest Playmobil thing I think I have EVER seen! It's like every other feature had me literally like 😮😮😮😮. I literally was not prepared for the greatness of this review! And yeah, if this was around when we were kids, I would have bagged my parents to get it for me. (Given the price point, I would have probably ZERO chance of actually getting it! Hahahaha, but I would have given it my best shot!😄) I think to celebrate the greatness of this review and WORTHY homage to the Original Series, (and myself as being a proud DS9er!) I think I'm going to bring those proverbial worlds together and go rewatch....."Trials and Tribblelations"!

"Ilia's theme" is the overture to the motion picture. In the director's cut it plays over an aft view of a starfield moving away from the camera. There's a questing, longing quality to the music that makes me think that, that is V'ger heading toward earth.
After the main title the tone changes when she encounters the Klingons. I tend to think their attack is what made her hostile and V'ger doesn't seem innocent again until the probe takes over Ilia and she's back to her longing to "join" with the creator and Ilia's theme represents both her and V'ger. Its incredible music, nonetheless.

As usual, you have done a thorough job in putting this video together. (OMG, those Innerspace toys...ugh!) And though I'm not a fan of Playmobil per se, after watching this video...well, I guess this is another test of how much of a Star Trek fan I am, because I am TEMPTED! I love the passion that you always show in these videos, and the pertinent details that collectors like to hear about. And because of the thoroughness of those details, it got me thinking...about POTENTIAL. Clearly, this USS Enterprise is a winner. So...what about a USS Enterprise Constitution Class Refit? Or a USS Reliant, (complete with Captain Terrell and crew AND Khan and his people!), or a USS Excelsior? For that matter, what about Klingon ships, like the K'Tinga Class Cruiser, or a Bird of Prey? The potential is LIMITLESS! And it all starts with this one toy. Thank you for the wonderful presentation, Michael!
