Do you ever take your scanner to a department store & turn on close call?

Every single time man, I catch loss prevention at target thinking no one is listening, all the staff at the local staples whining and trying to lie to customers, and the staff sometimes talking about rude people that come in. I was just at petsmart today and heard them call out someone that just walked in since they were apparently jerks who liked to bang on the bird cages a lot.
Hotels and Casinos are especially fun now too.

Does/would lowering the squelch help it pick up channels that aren’t as strong/close? I just got one, but live in a rural area. Still learning the scanner.

Your scanner's Close Call feature lets you set the scanner so it detects, alerts youto, and displays the frequency of a nearby strong radio transmission. You can setthe scanner so the Close Call feature checks for a Close Call hit every 2 secondsin the background while you are scanning, searching, listening to the weatherfrequency, etc. or use Close Call Only mode. Close Call 'Do-Not-Disturb' will onlycheck for close call signals when you are not receiving transmissions. You canalso select the frequency band(s) to look for transmissions. When the scannerdetects a Close Call hit, it alerts you according to the alert settings.'Hits with Scan' is a special system that automatically stores the last 10 Close Callhits until you cycle power. The Close Call feature works well for locating the source of strong localtransmissions such as mobile and handheld two-way radios in areas with no otherstrong transmission sources. Performance is increased with higher transmitpower, a receive antenna tuned to the target band, and a low background RFlevel. The Close Call feature works better with some types of transmissions than others. It might not correctly display frequency information for transmitters using a highlydirectional antenna (such as an amateur radio beam antenna) or if there aremany transmitters operating at the same time in the same area.Important! There are many options and settings in Search/Close Call Optionsthat affect and compliment the settings for Close Call. Please review those first.Press Menu. Scroll to Close Call and press E/yes.Close Call OnlyHits with ScanSet CC ModeSet CC BandsClose Call OnlyYou will see activity on the 7 bands in the display. Thanks for the in-depth response. I live and work on a ranch, on the TX/MEX border, and lots of large groups (20-40) walking through the area. Many are using HTs between the front and rear of the group. I’ve been walked up on several time. Not a good feeling. Trying to give myself a heads up.
EDIT: And when I say rural, I mean I’m 40 miles from the nearest town, about 8 miles off the paved road.

In that case you would be better off with a whistler scanner which has a Spectrum Sweeper feature that can detect further out.

TV FM traps are garbage and will barely do anything. If you're really serious you would get the PAR FM Notch filter. Or if you need a more budget option the HPN30118 on ScannerMaster works fairly decent as well and has an added lowcut filter as well to eliminate strong AM radio signals.
