It’s a tragedy that John wasn’t on during the insurrection. Can you imagine the shows we would have gotten? Man, really missed him then. There’s just no one that can mix humor with razor sharp insight like Oliver.
Well, I do have a tendency to wonder what he'd be saying about things that happen when his show is on break, but I'm also a little glad he didn't have to because I think many of these issues sincerely do pain him, so I'm happy to think the weight is off him once in awhile. I don't know if he CAN relax, but at least he theoretically has the option.
He didn't play the fiddle while Rome was burning, I respect that.
He'll have to talk about it because I'm sure he's going to talk about the impeachment trial
I so desperately craved hearing his input, he always makes me feel better about things without resorting to naive optimism while simultaneously laying down the cold, difficult facts.

I was just thinking that. Interviews like this are usually like “we’ll be back with so-and-so after the break” then it cuts and I can never figure out where the rest of the interview is.

Though John Oliver is almost shockingly, suddenly grey, his dimples and humor are better than ever.

The overall sentiment in NZ is overwhelming sadness as we watch our friends and family suffering in other countries. We feel very grateful to be here, but also nervous as we could also quite easily join the rest of the world in this devastating battle against COVID-19.
Amen to that. I was on the Interislander on the last day of the Christmas/New Year holiday & the ferry was packed with families heading home.
The scary thing was that besides me there was only one other person wearing a mask.
If just one person was infected when we boarded in Picton then potentially 300+ passengers could've been infected by the time we got to Wellington.
We have definitely become complacent and that is very dangerous heading into our second winter of the pandemic.

No country has come out of this unscathed financially. Had the virus hit our country harder, our economy would be worse rather than better, and more people would be dead. As well as smaller populations and more easily managed borders, we both also had longer to work out our response and strategies. Very occasionally our isolation from the 'rest of the west' is actually an advantage.
