Good job Docm, a little tip though, to avoid a shitload of caving (but not totally, nor avoiding surface disabling) : make an AFK platform around 128 away up from the lowest place your witches are (so, if you're dropping them 30 blocks, around 128 above that). You can make the platform in another chunk than the witch one to keep lc low. This way, the intersection of the 128 radius sphere with the surface will be like a 140x140 area, not 256x256, and only 30 block deep caving would be required.
I'd personally recommend to make a drop that doesn't kill the witches, but rather damages them just enough to not kill them and then use maybe another drop or suffocation because if witches have potions in their hands they have a chance to drop it, unlike when they don't hold one.
+Dami Bang If you drop them to low health and they dont die you will have to kill them instantly or they will heal them selves. Its not worth the effort considering how low the chance is.
Thanks for the video Doc, I've notice that witches can spawn outside the hut within the same chunk if you have a platform the same height as the hut floor. The difference is that other mobs can spawn as well.
You can do that. You would just have to light up the area around it. As MrKekson pointed out below, slimes will still spawn and it is slightly slower that the air-block method with the big roof,
AximKK92 You need about 300 more blocks for a large roof than for walls. Also, with walls you can use either slabs or torches to prevent mobs spawning outside the witch farm, but with a large roof you must use slabs for a significant area. The only advantage of a large roof is that you can see the witches.
Heathenfidel That's not the only advantage of a large roof. Due to the way the spawning algorithm works, if you put up walls, it will reduce the spawn rate slightly. The point was made in the video (at about 11:55) that you want as much air at the floor level as possible.
Dear Doc, Arey you crazy; HOW you change the typicallly Swampblocks in Sandstone???? ( Have you re- create it and how ??- please explain ) THANKS you are one of the firsttest youtuber who explain that !!!!!!!!!!
I use a shifting floor design too - what I mean is that the slimes don't fall through the shifting floors, and even if they did, unless they were mini slimes, they wouldn't die when they hit the bottom. They would merely separate into a smaller form. As well, since they don't despawn and don't fall through the floors, if one spawns it essentially just freezes up that floor of the trap, cutting spawning space in 2.
Just a few tips on how you could improve it if you got the resources/time to spend on it. Because slimes now spawn in the swamps and can still spawn in lit up areas it's best to also half slab, water or fill in the caves. The 128 area is in a sphere around you, so depending on where you plan to afk you only need 128 blocks in each direction from there. Your afk point should be 24 blocks away from the closest block witches can spawn on. So a good place to afk is 24 blocks above the farm.
1.7 snapshots were altering the way that the structures (huts, fortresses) were aligning with their special spawns (witches, wither skellies). The current live version, 1.6.4 is designed for you to visit the chunks (I think) that your structures are in, preserving their locations and alignment for 1.7 live. I sure hope it works as I just started a farm!
Still works in 1.7.2! A tip would be (if you don't want to cave or half slab), build up ~120 blocks from the spawning platforms and make a platform to stand on, that way mobs wont spawn in caves or too far from the hut. Hope this helped :D
Fantastic, definitely going to build one in my world - found a witch hunt almost entirely surround by water already, so little work needs doing to make a perimeter.
I think they'd be a very big issue, for any mob farm, especially over long periods of AFKing. They only despawn when they're 128 meters from you, as opposed to normal mobs which despawn randomly after 32 meters, so slimes would slowly accumulate over time if you don't move around.
Witch huts have what is called a "technical" biome. Its a small micro-biome within a biome. Witches only spawn in their respective biome. Which is why in the video you see that Docm isolated that to allow for 2 spawning areas.
@docm77 hey docm, I'm really sorry that I insulted ur music choice. I hope you are not mad at me because u make great videos and tutorials. Keep up the good work. Ur German fan, VincentX
Witches drop redstone and glowstone dust, among other things. Being able to obtain redstone without mining it is really REALLY convenient for some players, and farming witches is much safer than crawling the ceiling of the nether to get glowstone.
Hey doc i posted about this when you first introduced the witch farm on your last video. Hopefully this one you will see. You should park a couple cows down in the nether for the milk to counteract the poison damage you get when the witches fall to their deaths.
Pretty sure the mobs would still take up the parts of the spawning cycle that the witches need, since being 128 blocks away only makes them immediately despawn, it doesn't prevent them spawning.
Witches can only spawn in swampland biomes. If there are any blocks in the witch hut that are in other biomes (which you can check with your F3 screen), you'll need to replace them with glass, or some other non-spawnable block.
An alternative to caving and lighting everything up, is to go above the spawner by 40 blocks (I believe its 40-ish anyway) so that the spawner is the only thing in range of you. Means you have to light up much less
With the current spawn mechanics he would not be able to make one solely for enderman in the Overworld. He could build the same model he built in The End, but other hostile mobs would be able to spawn in it. It was designed for enderman's high health, to bring them to 1 hit kills. The plus side of things is if you did build his e-spawner in the Overworld any creepers or skeletons would die due to only have 10 hearts of health, whereas enderman have 20.
Awesome tutorial! One thing I'm wondering about though is why the need for all the air blocks to be exposed? I understand that air blocks are necessary for mob spawning, but why is it so important for a witch farm and not any other regular mob farms? I've never seen any non-witch farm designs that require the whole thing to be exposed to the air like this.
Press F3 and look at the 3rd line from the top of Minecraft (version). You will see E with a number, slash and another number. The number on the left of the slash tells you how many mobs there are. The number on the right of the slash tells you how many entities (blocks) there are on the ground. A line below the E is ALL. This tells you how many entities/mobs there are in total added up. E.G: 10 mobs, 5 items= 15 things in ALL.
I agree with you doc, and not it the case with your videos, but when you get a 30 second ad that you can't skip on a 1 minute video, it's really frustrating and excessive.
Witches falling to their death in the nether is much better than an ice conveyor, that way you can just hop in and out. I made one much like Doc's prototype but with 2 huts close by and I get amazing rates with caves lite up
Witches are not mods. They spawn in swamp biomes.Along with their hut. They are normally not noticed because they are not exactly rare just hard to find. :)
It's a mod, it's not by default. You'd need to download the mod which I believe is by KaboPC and it's called showmonsters or something. Hope I helped a bit.
It appears this will be another spooky update, as the witches spawning everywhere is linked to Halloween/All Saints Day/All Souls Day/Dia de la Muerte. They will probably have this only for a month or so, I am guessing.
You need to reset the mob cap in the area. Travel about 200 blocks away and return. You will need to repeat this periodically until you light everything within 128 blocks.
if you don't want to cave and light up everywhere, pillar about 110-20 blocks up above your farm and nothing can really spawn because they have to be within 128 blocks of you. you may need to switch to a lava blade so they don't fall out of range when being killed. works better in day.
Hey Doc, you talked about using trapdoors to encourage their pathfinding... Could you please explain how it works? Also, thanks for the video, a few days ago I found my first witch hut, so this is going to be veeery useful! :)
See i like that unlike the other people you are legitimately trying to be helpful, but i was referring to what we see at 1:01. When it lists Monsters: Spider, Zombie, Skeleton, Creeper, Enderman, Slime. I've been told by the unhelpful people that it is a mod, but they neglect to mention what mod.
It works the exact opposite from a spawner; i.e. spawners don't turn on (flame particles) until you are within 16 blocks of it; darkness spawns are suppressed within 16 blocks. So you only need to be at least 16 blocks away from the hut. Being in the drop zone is OK too, because you will probably drop them around 30 or so blocks.
Just found a hut the biome change is about 15 blocks away and it is already flooded with water not sure if it maters but am going to hold it back for now after watchin and waitin for da big flood mine. So thanks doc iv got five villagers with really cheap 1st trades thanks for that too, not needed for witch farms if anymore noods like me r readin these posts for help its a different econ... look forward to your tree farm love to watch all you guys jls witch farm is next on my list.........THANKS DOC...
Can you make a farm for witches anywhere in a swamp biome or does it have to be exclusively where you find a witches hut? My F3 doesn't show that monster spawnable interface in 1.4.7 so I am unsure if you built the farm on the hut or if you were just demonstrating what a typical hut looks like.
Step 1) Go to his comment Step 2) Click your comment that he responded to Step 3) Re-read the entire thing in order it was written.. Step 4) Thank me for clearing ish up :D
You don't have it bad, My internet is super slow, so it makes 30 second ads turn into 2 minute ads.. But I don't use adblock, Because as a youtuber myself, I understand how it feels.
Its a mod
hey
Once again, Doc wins an internet by designing an efficient method of farming a mob in Minecraft. Thanks, for making life easier for the rest of us!
Good job Docm, a little tip though, to avoid a shitload of caving (but not totally, nor avoiding surface disabling) : make an AFK platform around 128 away up from the lowest place your witches are (so, if you're dropping them 30 blocks, around 128 above that). Wow that's really useful, thanks, i saved a lot of time. :D
Doc hasn't aged a day. I want him to make a new one please.
"I've just changed a few things" -Docm77 after nearly finishing the farm :P
I love how thorough and detailed your tutorials are :3
What do you use to find what mobs can spawn where in F3?
I love your videos! They are very entertaining, and very informative! Even with attention deficit, I never get bored! Keep up the great work!
I'd personally recommend to make a drop that doesn't kill the witches, but rather damages them just enough to not kill them and then use maybe another drop or suffocation because if witches have potions in their hands they have a chance to drop it, unlike when they don't hold one.
is it like pressure plate then in the other side theres a sticky piston that will pull the block to suffocate the witch right?
yes.
+Dami Bang If you drop them to low health and they dont die you will have to kill them instantly or they will heal them selves. Its not worth the effort considering how low the chance is.
they will just drink healing potions, that won't work
Thanks for the video Doc, I've notice that witches can spawn outside the hut within the same chunk if you have a platform the same height as the hut floor. The difference is that other mobs can spawn as well.
How do I get the mob spawning info that Doc has? I'm having trouble finding the mod that does it...
great video, pretty much the best one about farming I have seen
"Half slab 128 blocks on each side." "You can make it crazy by placing 25 trap doors."
this is the first video of yours that ive seen, and i love you already
Thanks helped a lot now to find a hut.....
Holy crap! Doc you used your old ending theme. i missed that so much. nice vid.
Is there any reason you can't encase the witch farm in blocks to darken it instead of making that massive roof over it?
You can do that. You would just have to light up the area around it.
As MrKekson pointed out below, slimes will still spawn and it is slightly slower that the air-block method with the big roof,
I'm pretty sure you'd use much more blocks to completely encase it than just to build a roof.
AximKK92
You need about 300 more blocks for a large roof than for walls. Also, with walls you can use either slabs or torches to prevent mobs spawning outside the witch farm, but with a large roof you must use slabs for a significant area. The only advantage of a large roof is that you can see the witches.

does this work for 1.8.8 vanilla version
Dear Doc,
Arey you crazy; HOW you change the typicallly Swampblocks in Sandstone????
( Have you re- create it and how ??- please explain )
THANKS you are one of the firsttest youtuber who explain that !!!!!!!!!!
The dumbest comment would probably be… "hey dud dis work on xbox?!"
MrCharbits hey dud dis work on Xbox?!
MrCharbits yes
I personally love his accent. It relaxes me.
how do i get the mob spawn menu he had at 1:35??????
mats ostby
mats ostby what!?m?m???m?m?m?
Click to F3
I am definitely gunna make one of these!
Great work doc!
Does anyone else think he sounds like Koralis?
Gamer Ice sort of
Is this how you get witch quick?
Thanks folks, I'll be here all day.

Thanks a lot DocM, I was able to make a very efficient witch farm due to this video. I even adapted a bit of information for the drop from JL.
Just a few tips on how you could improve it if you got the resources/time to spend on it.

your toturials are the best, doc!

This is awesome, thanks doc! (and Jl and the guys :P)
He's voice isn't "fine", it's glorious!
first i have to clear out that HUGE jungle. cya docm77! thx 4 the help!
I love it doc!! Great video as always! ^__^ i hope youre having a great evening in germany! ;-)

Thanks Tristan! I've been wondering that for awhile and finally got the guts to comment. Btw do you need forge?
@docm77 hey docm, I'm really sorry that I insulted ur music choice. I hope you are not mad at me because u make great videos and tutorials. Keep up the good work. Ur German fan, VincentX
FINALLY! THANK YOU! Ive shifted through many an idiot over the last week I'm glad someone knows how to answer a question.

Thx for the vid doc I'm the envy of my friends for knowing how to make a witch farm
Hi Doc! If you want to clear your inventory in creative mode you can hold shift and click the x.
new witch farm video, doc!
Uhhhhh, I don't think it's anywhere close to being new😂
@@BobbyTheScarecrow i meant we need a new one
Forget it, I used slabs :D, nice video!
Hey doc i posted about this when you first introduced the witch farm on your last video. Hopefully this one you will see. You should park a couple cows down in the nether for the milk to counteract the poison damage you get when the witches fall to their deaths.

Great vid doc, going to make this on my world, thank you ^^
Thanks doc, super informative as usual (:
Yes, but you can fix this by adding a slime sorter. You can find one in KaboPC's witch farm design or just look it up.
An alternative to caving and lighting everything up, is to go above the spawner by 40 blocks (I believe its 40-ish anyway) so that the spawner is the only thing in range of you. Means you have to light up much less

He explains it... you get gun powder, bottles, sugar, redstone, etc., plus you could make it an xp farm
this was just a proof of concept video. use what ever style suits you best
It's basically like items in unloaded chunks: the despawn timer will be stopped because the nether isn't active if you are not in it.
Witches falling to their death in the nether is much better than an ice conveyor, that way you can just hop in and out. I made one much like Doc's prototype but with 2 huts close by and I get amazing rates with caves lite up

That was all interesting, but what I really want to know is how you got those portals to work like that in the prototype vid. :p
Thanks for the tutorial/info video!
You need to reset the mob cap in the area. Travel about 200 blocks away and return. You will need to repeat this periodically until you light everything within 128 blocks.
I'm pretty sure passive means it won't attack you under any circumstances. Witches are neutral mobs, along with endermen, zombie pigmen, and wolves.
if you don't want to cave and light up everywhere, pillar about 110-20 blocks up above your farm and nothing can really spawn because they have to be within 128 blocks of you. you may need to switch to a lava blade so they don't fall out of range when being killed. works better in day.

Its KaboPC's ShowMonsters mod, u can either searc youtube for kapopc or minecraftforums for the mod.
I can't wait for the real release. I want that solar panel item.
no, the game renders a specific region where witches spawn, then builds the structure to contain them

witch fights aren't like skeletal fights, they give up after one shot, and potions aren't that harmful to witches.
Good compact tutorial
In the description theres a video thats about wither skeletons, download it from there.
This farm is also useful to get easy healing potions as it is a rare drop for witches :)
Just an FYI, shift-clicking the "Delete" button will clear your inventory :P
It works the exact opposite from a spawner; i.e. spawners don't turn on (flame particles) until you are within 16 blocks of it; darkness spawns are suppressed within 16 blocks.
