I'm not sure if this is already possible or not, but for games not optimized for the Rift it would be cool just to use the Rift as a stationary screen because its a full surround method. Even if you cant move your head to move the camera it would still make for better immersion in games while not requiring having a big TV like we need now. I think watching movies with the Rift would be quite awesome too.
It would cause motion sickness though. If the screen takes up the entirety of your vision the brain doesn't have a reference point to confirm that it isn't moving. The brain sees movement but doesn't feel it, confusing it and causing motion sickness.
I watched Gravity on a giant virtual curved screen, it was great. It was also in 3D which is cool because you get 0% cross-over with 3D movies on the Rift.
NoToeLong You could, theoretically, make an executable that takes whatever game you wish to play and have skinned on a 'virtual tv' in a 'virtual livingroom'. If you enable head tracking and were able to look around your 'virtual livingroom' that might help compensate for the dizzying feeling. It's kind of asinine and ridiculous but, I think it would be a fun project just to see the effects. Perhaps if you are looking within a certain viewing window of the virtual tv, the tv will get larger or you could do something even more pointless and use a kinect camera to scan your actual living room, map it out in a 3d realm, skin it (probably best to do that yourself) or just have it as silhouettes, and boom you could be fully immersed in a virtual world that is based off the real world that is 3 feet in front of you already. The future is here people. Wake up and buy enough DK2's for your whole family.
i know that vireio perception 3d drivers (which is free unlike vorpX) are working now on a support for DK2...and they have skyrim support for DK1..so we can expect that game to be supported on their next update for DK2 aswell.
I've been using my DK2 for over a week now and its amazing. Played on a DK1 at uni and this is soooooooo much better. Regular consumers still need to wait but if you don't mind fixing stuff and a bit of messing about I highly recommend it if you are impatient :P
You can only get out of tracking range in a seated setup if you put the camera ontop of a monitor and then sit at the table. Move the chair back 1.5m and you have a LOT more space to move in.
You were really great in that video Luke. You looked much more comfortable than usual. And... you smiled. ;-) Great stuff! edit: I don't include wan shows in the comparison
"would you be interested in buying 1 right now?" its simple, the answer is more lik do you have enough money to buy DK2 and you cant wait for another year for CV1 to get released? for me the answer is yes and ive already preordered mine on june 18..cannot wait.
Great video, but a couple things. The camera actually has a quite enormous range, it's just that people are placing it too close. Check out RoadtoVR's recent video showing just how big the detection area is when you're at a proper distance (you can stand up, walk around a little bit, lay on the ground and it never loses detection). If you're closer than five feet, you'll run into issues frequently. Another thing is Oculus came out and said you should not add any extension cables to the Rift as this adds additional latency. Other than that, sweet video.
Luke, but don't tell Linus (It might be bad for your career). You have a much better screen presence and you are just plain better at doing videos. Keep them coming.
Still too early...wireless would be ideal (wires are a trip hazard) at least 4k support with a wider viewing angles for motion camera. I think a balanced mix between the Xbox Kinect and Wii motion controller would be awesome.
Well at least you've got your DK2 to keep you out of the sun for a while ;) Sadly mines taking a while because they're only drip feeding Aus/NZ :( Loved the CyberSpace demo editing :D
that box was the controller for panel. and the only cable coming out of it was a LVDS cable in this version the Control Board is inside the unit thats why the two wires
Hey Luke, I know your headphones are great, but you need better ones for sound accuracy. You need DT 990 pro or Philips Fidelio X1/28. They are open-back headphones which provide that accuracy in games with the addition of being fun too. Philips would be the one I recommend( parts are not easily replaceable like the DT990 pro though, plus I recommend changing the 3.5mm cord ). You have to be in a quiet room, but open-back headphones are worth it.
I am considering an Oculus. Looks lile so much fun! I also find it quite funny that their sponser is not available where they are located. Ting is US only as of right now.
after watching this video and seeing the improvements that it needs to be a great product I wonder if the final "consumer" release is going to be afordable
I love the Oculus Rift, but if I get it, I think I will end up with a Control VR too, if you dont know what that is, its a upper body motion tracker so you can move hands and legs made by Brandon form Node/Freddiew.
I am so excited for VR, but I think im going to wait until 4K and high frame rates, I only want a VR experience for the immersion if that can't be created I don't want to spend money on it yet. Looks sick though and support will help the industry move forward so im more than happy for other people to buy and try it out xD
Were you using the right game footage there? Most of the time, people were turning their heads all around, but the footage on the screen looked really static...
I'd try to convince my parents to go to Ting, but Sprint network isn't really covered in my area. AT&T and Verizon work the best with a very low coverage of T-Mobile, but Sprint isn't even really heard of in my town.
Actually in the DK2 user book it says that they recommend to not use USB or HDMI extenders as the tracking camera doesn't compensate for it.. I don't know the technical part of it all but just saying :P
I kinda want Microsoft to do something like this for Xbox One and they could probably just use Kinect for body tracking but like this other youtuber said I know I would just go back my controller eventually, I thought I would rather have a stereo headset over surround sound but I don't like having extra peripherals. Still very cool tech and umm....that video quality, the color or something was just off, and yea like others said v neck tan....
The DK2, is as the title would make evident, a Developers Kit... I picked one up, but that is because I have been developing on the DK1 with a team for the past year... the experience on the DK2 is far greater, but is still not consumer friendly... Also, quick plug, be sure to check out SpinDrift! for the Rift
have you tried Eve Valkerie yet? for me it was by far the best VR experience so far. Since your seated in an cockpit i did not mind the joystick. it was real Immersive and realy made me feel like a space pilot.
DK2 is definitely FOR DEVELOPERS. Enthusiasts will buy it, sure, but this is rough around the edges. If you don't plan to at least try and make content it's probably not a good idea. CV1 will be better and cheaper anyway! Side note btw: DO NOT extend the HDMI connection with a passive connector. Use only an active connector!
4K is a minimum for CV1, I hope Oculus VR undestand it. If they want to be the best VR company and if they want Oculus Rift to be the best HMD, they NEED 4K display in it.
is it normal nvidia 3d compatable? i'm not worried so much about looking around or vr, a good 3d display would be nice, and this thing sits in the same price range.
I had ability to give it a shot at Summer Assembly, and it was great. I myself am astigmatistic, so the resolution was large enough to be "retina", a very, very blurry one, just like real world! :D (without glasses, that is). I hope there will be some possibility to buy custom lenses fixing it (in the customer version), but I am a bit afraid of the cost. 1 lens = ~250€ (over 300$), and I obviously need 2, and on top of that the rift itself.. Well, it may be worth it.
I love everything about the Oculus, I just hate it's current price point. Hopefully it'll come down in price when it's finalized, because even people who are really excited for this, cannot afford to shell out more than their computer is worth for it.
With the hmz-t3 I'm lying down with it on my face watching movies and playing games. If not then it eventually gets forward heavy after a while and pinches the bridge of my nose. If I get oculus rift I would want the same thing, I rather have the screen move with the controller instead of moving my head that way I can lie down with it too. 2048 resolution maybe at that size?
Highly interested in Oculus Rift, but not for the Dev kit... or the first consumer version. Will wait for v2 for when all the kink and other little things are gone. Or if they ever manage to make it wireless. Wireless HDMI IS a thing already, not sure about wireless USB, though, could just put it on the 2.4ghz band with a receiver that acts as a usb hub I guess?
You guys should have tried Elite Dangerous with the OR dk2, they are made for each other. if you played Elite:D with dk2, you would right away recommend it, perhaps even say it's a must have, lol, the best VR experience to date.
So I'm looking to buy a new laptop. I will not be using it for gaming at all. However, I do a lot of programming and sometimes need to run multiple virtual machines at once. What would you recommend for processor/RAM configuration? In my case, would the price difference between an i5 and i7 processor be worth the performance benefits?
That V-neck tan...
Exactly what I said literally right before I read this
Great minds think alike.
^^ that burn is perfect lol
thats the first thing that caught everyones eyes. Unlike oculus. It still sucks and no major companies are into it.
so true lol
Is VR ready for prime time?
Nope 😂

NoToeLong We have a compensation from that in our auditory system, but yes, we would get dizzy.
The VR cinema is awesome. When there's much higher resolutions I would love to play regular games there.
I watched Gravity on a giant virtual curved screen, it was great. It was also in 3D which is cool because you get 0% cross-over with 3D movies on the Rift.

Wow 9 long years have passed and now there's the quest 1,2,3 and pro. Also the valve index and HTC vive, pro.

i'm waiting for the cv1. I think that will be better.

My DK2 just shipped 40 minutes ago! :D
:DD don't puke from motion sickness

Agent181
lol.. but with dk2 motion sickness is largely gone actually
Did the DK2 come with a audio-out (minijack) plug? Or do u have to have yet another cable hanging to the PC for audio?
The resolution doesn't need to be raised, the pixel pitch need to be lowered.
I bought a DK2 because i am so curious and have no other way to try it out.

for the DK3 they could use lg g3's 1440p screen instead of the 1080p note 3's screen
