It's nice but I wouldn't complain about one or two captive screws with a standard size on the back if it can save on costs. Typically on older laptops the only toolless access was for removing the battery.
I really wish it were standard practice for companies to open-source discontinued products. There's a business case against it (business suit says: "Better support for old thing means fewer people buy new thing"), but the negative externalities of letting old products die are too great to ignore. I'd love to see some regulatory body step in and try to change the incentive model.
We could also just abolish IP and rely on basic Fraud Laws to get every bad things people want out of IP. IP is just a legal Monopoly Right to lock tech behind patents and they discourage production and innovation. x86 is the most clear example of this. Fuck patents. Ideas can be exploited by an infinite amount of people without problem. The logical conclusion of IP is that competition should not exists and every idea should be strickly produced by a single organisation. Innovators already have market advantage by being the first to produce something and introducing retroengineering cost. And the only reason the "big player" are so.omnipresent is because of those legal monopoly grant that protected them for decades.
These business cases are just a product of capitalism. What we need is a replacement for capitalism that doesn’t rely on accumulating capital but instead on doing good for society. Of course, the capital holders will do everything in their power to ensure that their ill-gotten gains are safe, even if it means damaging society (and the planet) in the process.

2:39 the vapor chamber was changed from copper to stainless steel ? Wasn't it changed from copper to a mix of Copper AND stainless steel now? As is literally shown on screen. Not sure how using stainless steel is better when it is barely 15W/mK compared to about 400W/mK for copper (bigger number = better thermal conductivity). When did laptop like this could be upgradeable beside old Lenovo laptop most laptop back in the day could not do that as well, only one I know of in framework.
The tooless back case removal is gonna be nice for when they come in for repairs. Surprising how much of the day can be spent unscrewing and then screwing back in screws.
4 hours at least if you forgot to plug in something on a PS5. don't ask me how I know. 🤣
25-30 year wait maybe? Maybe less? It might even push companies to ACTUALLY advance technology to get people to buy the new stuff.
There's a business case for it too though: if you open source your discontinued product then the risk for customers to buy into it is lower
Why, you can now hope that the product will be supported even longer. @@gfasterOS
I gotta admit... this is impressive from AMD. I wouldn't buy it as I wouldn't need a laptop that powerful since I have a desktop, but man this bodes well for the future.
This kind of GPU miniaturization makes me really excited for the next generation of standalone VR headsets.

Up to us to make sure they lose more money not giving us AMD than what Intel gave them.
Not really, all they have to do is say "if you don't put only intels in them then you aren't allowed to have our GPUs, make your choice"
While I wouldn't be at all surprised, it might also simply be a matter of what ASUS thinks will sell better. Intel is still very dominate in the laptop space, so it's not shocking to see them getting more of the focus when it comes to halo products, even if it is pretty disappointing.

This is basically AMD’s version of Apple’s M4 Max, and I’m absolutely here for it
@@nickd7935 expect this is like 2x the power of an m4 max.
Did some calculations in this topic, the regular M4 has an igpu equivalent of 60-70% power of a RX 6600, the M4 pro has about 100-105% power of an RX 6600.
The Strix halo is estimated to have the power of a 7600XT which is more or less 2x the power of a RX 6600. Which is 2k 120 fps high settings category. Insane.
@ M4 Max is double the gpu core count and double the memory bandwidth of M4 Pro so it should be about 50-60% faster real world, putting it at like 155-170% perf of RX 6600. That’s pretty close to the stated perf of the full Strix Halo die. M4 Max pulls about 80w under load on N3E, iirc strix halo pulls 100-120w under load, but is on N4. Tbh it sounds like AMD and Apple are neck and neck design wise, with Apple getting better allocation of the latest nodes from TSMC. Love to see the competition.
@@nickd7935 On paper maybe, but if you look at any benchmarks, the fullest m4 pro max igpu is only equivalent to a rx 6600. Not more. While the base m4 igpu is like 60-70% of the RX 6600.

While it is certainly more rigid and would helps prevent heat from other parts to heat up the heatpipes too much when we want to pull heat away from the CPU/GPU... My guess is they wanted to save a buck on the copper, not so much that it's "better" than the previous solution they had. Just that it's more efficient.
You only really need copper at the point of contact with die and radiator, since 99% of the heat is transferred with vapor, not through metal.
