I have so much respect for anyone who've gone through this. As an Asian immigrant, first generation to be in American school, I had such a tough time trying to fit in. I did manage to fit in at the cost of so much regrets and resentments towards myself about how I treated my parents. My heart breaks everytime I listen to this song. Thank you guys for reacting to it and truly amazing to watch you two. Proud to be subscribed to you guys.

While not first generation, I did live the vagabond life of a military brat. I have moved 26 times. Once it was 4 new schools in 4 years in different communities and provinces. Brutal. While not a person of colour all of my extended family is, and I am so so so grateful that I grew up with different colours, sometimes different languages and always different experiences than me. I’m 58 and this song STILL rings true. Be yourself …. except…. follow someone else’s rules and expectations. Don’t talk about all the places you have lived with people who have never been out of their province, and sometimes their little community. Definitely don’t have family that is black, Asian, Indigenous, Italian or Ukrainian. It was sometimes brutal but never ever what it was like for my extended family who never looked like me.

I know it’s not the same we should be happy of who we are this is so relatable of Asians I use to get bully when I was little and now I like pick on people now I feel so bad for people like the title Stand out fit in kinda is the meaning of our lives I regret being this type of way of being a new person this story makes people emotions deep it’s like white peoples judging black people trying to learn in American school is hard we need more people treating people with more respect and kindness like yes I got robbed 3 times I lost like 40k dollars in total it makes us stay home and go back to our country and learn there and we just cry and want to be someone else because like you lost your body like you listen to them you become them this really fits in the Asian community

Thank you for picking up their song.
I'm not good at English, so I used a translation tool for the following sentences. There may be some unnatural parts.
They are not Japanese American. They are all Japanese rock groups. Taka was not a returnee and learned English later.
Currently he lives in both the United States and Japan. Therefore, his English has improved considerably.
Their songs have more English lyrics as they expand overseas.
There are both pros and cons about that, but it is also true that some foreigners find it cooler to include Japanese lyrics.
In any case, I look forward to their soulful lyrics and performances in the future.

My take on it, (the one that stood out to me at least) was after the car crash. And he started dancing. You see his hair turns blond? Stand out. And the people dancing with him looks like they're trying to push him down. Fit in. But he kinda overcame that and his hair turned back to black and to his Younger self. Maybe as he tried to fit in, he also slowly loses his childlike self. Only by overcoming that that he revert back to be a child. Or ones closer to his roots. No need to stand out or to fit in. Or maybe, him turning back to a child means that of realization and acceptance of himself

One Ok Rock is made to be on stages. They are amazing. Many years performing, many albums, everything is amazing. I prefer their old stuff because it is harder. Love them. My favourite japanese band. I love Taka´s voice. Not many rock singers have such an incredible voice. And the crowd is always amazing in concerts. You will be mind blown if you see them them live. Any song you pick live is spectacular.

And not just Asian cultures. African, Middle Eastern, even Eastern European. I may be wrong, but I find the US to be the most racially intolerant country I have ever experienced. Instead of embracing the beauty in ALL cultures they insist people lose their culture, their language, the very soul of who they are and become some weird version of European descendents, forgetting that every single country of the early immigrants fought to keep their cultures (hence bagpipes and cabbage rolls).

lol Thank you!! This is why I wanted you guy to listen to One Ok Rock... Their songs are not only amazing but will get you thinking.. in some ways they are kinda like BTS with how they use their music to broadcast issues that need to be heard. Also they are a Japanese/American "rock" group so some songs are in both where they switch between the two and some are all English and some are in all Japanese . Like everyone in the comments are saying they are freaking AWESOME Live Taka who is the lead singing voice is soooo freaking amazing.... Thank you guys again for giving them a chance... Now on to the next song of theirs The Beginning live plz ;)

I felt that the meaning of [they said] in the lyrics also included the meaning of myself. The video is Asian, but I think it applies to others as well. Also, I think it applies to work and groups of friends. I take it from various angles. I wondered if the last dance mismatch was the key. From the Japanese who live in Japan.

As immigrants we all feel this way at some point, right? We all do. The struggle trying to fit in to the culture which is not yours. But why, though. The culture is you, yourself, your family and your ancestors. That’s what makes you unique and individual. We are all different and we should all accept and respect it.
By the way, I loved the translations. The mother still sees the boy’s innocence… I was confused with this MV half way from the accident, but that’s really a good transition.

You can see in the beginning he’s good at math which is an Asian stereotype and they make fun of him, and then that one kid does the racist eye slant mocking him, and then when he brings out his authentic Asian food at lunch the kids think it’s “gross” and make fun of him. And then at his parent’s Asian restaurant the kids are drinking and then dine and dash. He then tries to blend in with those same bullies to fit in. And by the end he learns about what’s important and reverts back to that innocent child who is the “real” him.

What I love about this song is how they put things that are kind of opposites together to represent the mixed messages we get. Shoot low, aim high. Eat up, stay thin. Stand out, fit in. I am an adult immigrant to Japan, and I used to try to be super Japanese. But Japan did not really accept me as Japanese, and there is more to me than my Japanese self. So now I am who I am. Deal with it or don't.
PS, from Barbados so I know like 8 words of Creole. lol. Sak pa se.

late to your first time reacting, but that red figure is a Chinese Opera House Dancer. And you see after the car accident he starts dancing confidently along with the Chinese dancer, who is changing faces. But then his hair and eyes become blonde and blue, and the other kids his age show up and suddenly he's fumbling, he's dancing differently, he's falling down because he's trying to imitate their dancing instead of the Opera House dancer. But he doesn't know the steps, he doesn't know the rhythm, because he's not like the other kids. His roots are in Chinese culture. And he starts getting pushed and punished by the other kids his age but at the end of the song he's back to being a child, recognizing that he didn't need to be like the other kids. He went back to when he was proud of his Chinese heritage and not trying to fit in with the other kids. Which is when you see his mom smile, because she never smiled at him when he was pretending to be one of the other kids.
