I am Japanese and was living in London 5 years ago. For this part (1:02), the answer is "yes". I was in secondary school at that time, and I didn't have any other Japanese students there. Students made fun of my eyes doing this gesture within saying "ching chong". I tried but I couldn't actually stop them doing it because of my bad English. I really like Jane saying "What???" to this part. :)
Really takes a white person to wonder if non-whites still face racism and bullying. It blew my mind that she even had to ask that. Thank you for confirming for her.
There is a lot of meaning to this video. I love this band. Taka's vocals are amazing and they are all phenomenal people. Also they are incredible live.
I can not believe they react to One ok rock, all their songs are perfect. Unlike me, my friends do not like kpop and Asian things, but they have always valued and appreciated OOR.
One of the message is to be yourself and not be someone else just to be a part of something you're not. Do not abandon those who gave life to you or it'll just be worthless and you'll end up losing it for nothing.
So much hidden meaning in this song and the video itself, even the title has a meaning that it’s too good. It talks not only about racism but also about rejection and discrimination, and how we as persons just want to have friends and interact with others but in order to do so you gotta fit in their organization and live by their rules. The asian kid was discriminated due to his racial characteristics and because he brought traditional food from one asian country, then the next scene shows a group of friends in the restaurant of his family and portraits how these guys were “cool” in his eyes so when he grew up he copied their style and how they drank and were kinda douchey but after the accident it was shown that this guy even with those changes on how he behaved and how the looked inside he was still the same little asian guy that wanted to be accepted and fit with others
One Ok Rock is a hidden treasure that more people should know about ..... Taka has one of the most pure rock voices in the history of music and the other members are fierce in studio and live performances . Please check them out . They deserve it .
This band is not always talking about lovey dovey stuff (even tho they have lovey dovey song).. For example: This song - is talking about racism Be the light - is talking about tsunami in Japan We are - is talking about motivation... not getting depressed Nobody's Home - is talking about Broken Home Smiling Down - Is talking about their friend who died at that time
This song is more talking about the hypocracies of society. They tell you to be one way, but also be another. Basically saying that there's always another group that won't be happy with who you TRY to be, so the only person you should try to be is yourself
They are popular in Asia and Japan. Rock is also cool, ballad tune is wonderful. We are [18Fes ver] with English / Japanese Subtitles Taka is so WONDERFUL!! Adele - Hello (Cover by Taka from ONE OK ROCK) Taka's voice is incredible.

‘Stand Out Fit In’ - as explained on Mima’s work - is a song about the society’s hypocrisy which, at the same time, encourages the individual to ‘Stand Out’ and demands him to ‘Fit In’ into a standard created by the society itself. To approach this subject, the MV tells the story of the Asian-American boy called Hao. Hao is a very dedicated student attending a western school while his parents work in a traditional Chinese restaurant. After going through bullying and intolerance issues in his younger years, he changed his personality, choosing to follow western rules to fit in, however, this choice leads him to a point that has no turning back. The dancing scene at the bridge part of the song: Bian Lian’s (the dancer that appeared after the accident) apparition is a portrayal of Hao’s roots. When Hao sees the dancer, he faces his roots and tries to hold on to them through the dance he’s trying to follow. Then, his American friends joined the dance, those he wants to fit in with, but it wasn’t easy for Hao to keep it up, he struggles, he wavers, he changes his hair, his face and, finally realizes that all this struggling would only take away his own identity. In the end, he frees himself of the oppression and the society’s demand has put on his shoulders. The choreography shows to Hao that it doesn’t matter how much he tries to follow the tide - he will always be tested for simply being from a different ethnic. When he returns, as his younger self, it shows that his interior self rescued Little Hao who has been proud of his roots. Followed by the arrival of his mom in the final scene, it confirms that they share a strong and deep bond. She knows his true self and accepts him for who he is. J-POP has its roots in rock in the United States and the United Kingdom. It has a long history. However, K-POP is an idol. They don't know rock. We don't write songs or lyrics ourselves. My favorite j-rock band. Love them all from Thailand 🇹🇭😍
This band is not always talking about lovey dovey stuff (even tho they have lovey dovey song).. For example:
This song - is talking about racism
Be the light - is talking about tsunami in Japan
We are - is talking about motivation... not getting depressed
Nobody's Home - is talking about Broken Home
Smiling Down - Is talking about their friend who died at that time
I wouldn't necessarily label this song as something exclusively about racism.
I think j-music songs always have those themes..
This song is more talking about the hypocracies of society. They tell you to be one way, but also be another. Basically saying that there's always another group that won't be happy with who you TRY to be, so the only person you should try to be is yourself

I think I'm the only one looking at this from a cultural/political perspective even by Asian standards. lol
This song is a juxtaposition and resonates with both the rebels and the good Asian kids and is a song for anyone who's ever felt like an outcast.
A lot of people point to it being about bullying and fitting in but I think it reflects the Asian community very well especially if you look at it from a cultural/political perspective.
I would say that this song is seen from the perspective of the Asian children heeding the words of their parents.
If we look at that from a cultural perspective, this is Japan looking at China and saying, "I remember who we were".
If we look at that from a modern day China man's perspective, it almost patriotic.
"I know they don't like me that much
Guess that I don't dress how they want
I just wanna be myself
I can't be someone else"
China today is a communist country and isn't well liked and Asian culture is still playing catchup with the West so this is reflected by some Asians in the West being bullied.
China just wants to be itself, exceptional and unique, but the West wants to change it and bring about / continue their hegemony.
"Try to color inside their lines
Try to live a life by design
I just wanna be myself
I can't be someone else
Someone else"
Every Asian parents advice to Asian children. Play by the rules but be exceptional. Be the Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Entrepreneurs, etc of this world.
Try to live life with a purpose.
From a political perspective, China is trying remember their past and coming back but at the same time they are feeling pressure of being second class: "Try to color inside their lines" in a western dominated society.
"They yell they preach
I've heard it all before
Be this be that
I've heard it before
Heard it before"
Now we go directly to the kid's thoughts of what his parent's are saying.
They yell at us, they preach to us but so what? We've heard of this before.
We feel the pressures of being Asian from our parent's and countries proud history, etc.
"Big boys don't cry
Shoot low aim high
Eat up stay thin
Stand out fit in
Good girls don't fight
Be you dress right
White face tan skin
Stand out fit in"
'Chinglish' advice by the Asian parents basically summing up our lives. Be proud to be you but be different. Remember your Asian roots/heritage. Yadiyadiya.
Looking at it politically, men should be proud of their country and rich history even if we are no longer No. 1.
Be ruthless (to thyself) but have mercy (on others).
"I am who I am
No matter what
Never changing
No matter what
No matter what"
This part comes after a traditional Chinese/Japanese Xiqu dance to signify that times change.
We can keep faking to be someone we are not to fit in and get ourselves killed or realize that one day we could be popular again, just in a different form.
Modern Asian Hip-Hop actually draws a lot from Ancient Chinese dance signifying a cultural return.
From a political standpoint China is rising again like a phoenix.
From another perspective the story also states the hypocrisy of the Asian kids about how far they would go to fit in and stop being an outcast (aka they would bully others) and that this has got to change / there are other ways...which is through cultural understanding.
