We're looking at a 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado GT in Blue Paint. The car comes with the 455 CI V8 engine and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Steve Plunkett. Steve’s had this car since 2012. Steve shares it’s a rare cars with styling and low miles. He enjoys the way it looks and appreciates the ride quality too.
ENJOY!
Hi, If you like this video, please click on SUPER THANKS ❤ with the $ in the middle which is the SUPER THANKS button under the video. Thank you! Lou
man GM was at the top of the styling game these years, and the Toro was the flagship. This is gorgeous. A 70 GT with its 400 hp 455 has been on my bucket list for quite a while.
Hi Steve, Happy to read "This is gorgeous." :-) My pleasure sharing this "bucket list" car with you, Lou
And I think it had over 500 ft. lbs. of torque. Great powertrain.
A " beautiful blue beauty from baby lou". 😅. I don't think I ever seen a GT tornado. I actually think they are rated at 400 h.p. versus I think the slightly lower 390 version 455
Ahhhh Big Hankie, Happy to share this "bluetiful" car with you :-) Glad to read you've never seen one like this before, Lou
What a great Olds Mr. Plunkett has brought for us to enjoy. I've always been fond of luxury coupes, but this one with a little extra styling and all the extra power, makes it easy to admire. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to read you "admire" this car :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
Never heard of the GT. It cost an additional $47.39 for the GT Package. It had an upgraded Camshaft, but it also had bigger valves and other engine upgrades to go along with it. Standard HP was 375, but the GT had 400 HP. Thanks for sharing this great car, Lou! P.S. They made over 5000 GT's out of 25000 Tornado's that year.
Hi Bob, Happy to read this is a car you "Never heard of the GT" :-) I haven't either and I find it fun learning about them. You're welcome, Lou
That is the first GT I’ve ever seen and not only is it a gorgeous car with low miles but it is a distinct sound with that camshaft change being a GT car. I’m impressed thanks Lou. If anybody can show me a vehicle I’ve never seen or heard of before, it is more often than not you God bless you, sir❤🙏
Hi James, Happy to read this is the first GT you've seen. Me too. Glad to read you're impressed. Blessings received. God bless you too, Lou
@@loucostabile one of these days will be back to work, perhaps with the help and grace of God and we will gladly give you a contribute. You do excellent stories and outstanding machines.❤️🙏
You didn't mention the bucket seats. One year only. In 54 years I have only seen one GT.
Hi Stephen, Thank you for commenting on the bucket seats. Happy to share this rare car with you, Lou
What a great Olds. I had some friends who's parents had Toronados but I don't think I've ever seen a GT before.
Another lesson learned, thanks Lou 👍👍😎✌️
Hi Pat, Happy to share this "GT" with you :-) I'm learning all the time from the CARetakers too, and I find that to be so much fun. You're welcome, Lou
Wow! You have a car featured here that you never see anymore. While maybe not as stunning as the first year model, this is still a classic and being a special GT model is even more rare and delicious! Keep spoiling us, Lou!
Hi ultraviolet tp, You're right, this one is "rare and delicious!" :-) My pleasure "spoiling" you, Lou
Beautiful, some prefer the 66s and 67s, but the 1970 was the last year for these generation 1 cars ,i believe the 69s had hidden headlights. This one is spectacular.
Hi Peter, Happy to read "This one is spectacular" :-) Thanks for sharing, Lou
The sheet metal on the sides is unique to 1970. The '70 Riviera had a lot of one year changes, too.
Very nice Olds! I’ve never heard of the GT before.
Simply beautiful.
Thanks Steve and Lou!
Hi Jeff, Happy to share this rare GT with you :-) Glad to read you enjoy the looks of this car. You're welcome, Lou
G’day Lou,
What an awesome Oldsmobile Toronado.
I was thinking the Toronado was equipped with the W34 package which was the 390 hp
455 Olds but my book of reference tells me there were 5341 W34 Toronado build in 1970.
If it was a W34 it was rated at 400 hp not too shapy at all.
Always like the shape of the Toronado’s great video.
Cheers
Louis Kats you number 1 Fan in Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺 👍
Goodday Louis, Happy to read "What an awesome Oldsmobile Toronado" :-) Appreciate you sharing your knowledge to add to the story. Thank you for being my # 1 Fan In Australia. Cheers, Lou

I'm familiar with Tornado and what an Interstate Cruiser they were. But a GT? I never heard of it. This is one that falls into the Unicorn category, IMO. If I remember correctly, they had an incredible cast iron engine. With front wheel drive and all the weight of the engine, you could drive thru 12" of snow without a problem. Nice find Lou.
"But a GT? I never heard of it. This is one falls into the Unicorn category IMO." Happy to share something you've never heard of before :-)
What a rare car and excellent survivor. Steve is such a great caretaker of these cars. Thanks Lou!

Hi Lou 👋👋👋👋👋👋🙂 Awesome car I Had A Matchbox like that Purple
Hi Derek, Happy to read you enjoy this "Awesome car" :-) "I Had A Matchbox like that Purple" NICE! Lou
1970 was the last good looking Toronado. 1971-1978 were ugly gas guzzling arks. The 80's Toronados were problematic and unreliable unless you had the 350.
Hi Milford Civic, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Love the super rare 400 horse power GT banker's hotrod!
Nice :-)
NICE, when i lived on Long Island and we had our 66 Toronado a neighbor bought a 70 GT, i don't remember theirs with that stripe around the wheels but the GT did have a better cam--I think it was the W-30 cam like the W-30 442? That mileage is AMAZING, god bless the people who remember how great those older cars were before the 1st gas shortage. Nice to see they kept the same speedo and instrument cluster since 66!!
Hi Jim, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your neighbors car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Beautiful car Lou God Bless.
Hi Leroy, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Blessings received. God bless you too, Lou
I believe the factory rating for the 1970 - 455 Toronado GT engine was 400 horsepower!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Hi mrgrandprix fourspeed, Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You're welcome, Lou
A very cool ride.
Happy to read "A very cool ride." :-)
Rare indeed. Rest assured you'll not see one of these on the road today on your way to work. Not so sure the exhaust is stock as that thing sounds wicked, and someone put 442 trumpets on it, but I love it! Cars like this are proof positive that GM was king back then. What a way to take a road trip, Thanks Lou!
Hi Tom (and JudyAnn), Happy to share this "rare" car with you today. I believe the "trumpets" came on this one stock because it's a GT. My pleasure sharing this one with you. You're welcome, Lou
Hi Lou do you think you could feature a Plymouth Prowler with matching trailer 1997 &1999 or 2000 ??? I also love old Packards and Caddy's & Lincolns and Imperials 👍😊
Hi Derek, When you're interested in a car, type into RUclips search "My Car Story with Lou Prowler" or "My Car Story with Lou Packard" etc and you should see many of those cars you enjoy. Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
Ironic that he also collected Cadillacs, l saw several features that made me think Cadillac. Beautiful car with a nice sound . Thanks for the video!

Awesome Lou《☆》Wow👍🏾☕🤳I didn't know Olds made a GT. My neighbor had a Tornado when they 1st came out. I knew it was FWD V8 but didn't pay it much attention. The Barrel Speedo, push button ash reciever & Telescoping column are kool kool features✌🏼😎☯️
Hi BDOG JR, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your neighbors car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
What a beautiful Toronado! I passed my license test on '83, in an '82 Toronado that was still like new. My cousin's car. He ordered a 1985 Riviera next, even more loaded than the Toro. Two tone leather w/suede seats. A beautiful car too. I like the way that generation Eldo/Toro/Riv went down the road. Nice drivers.

I like the '70 body. I had a '68. It wasn't as sleek.🙂
Hi Dennis, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Lou, if i didn't know any better, I'd say you're doing this on purpose - finding rare reats such as this and putting us to detective work by discretely showcasins the clues. This time, I think it might be a very rare base GT (only 332 made out of the total of 5,341 GTs), given the door tag VIN (3 87 etc). The much more fashionable Custom GT had the '3 96 87' designation. Nad this is where it gets interesting: the cowl trim tag reads 39687, but the interior has the fold-down center armrest of the Deluxe variant. Which any way it is, it's a great find!!
Raz, Such a treat to find the jewels so you can showcase them with your superb writing skills. My pleasure sharing with you, Lou
I have seen two GT's in my life, though long ago.
First was a very rusty blue unit in a ritzy part of the city.
The second was a longtime resident of a pick-a-part. No motor, but the emblem on the hood and a cutout bumper in the rear.
I believe the GT option was 10% of the total production that year, over 3000 built. Since it was a one year option, (1970 only), it amounts to being rare overall.
The same powertrain was available in 68 and 69, with the 68 having a fresh air duct to the snorkle of the air cleaner. This fresh air duct would become commonplace to a lot of cars in the 1970s and forward.
Hope to see more of the collection. Cheers!
Hi Gordon, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the two GT's you've seen :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and stay tuned, you're going to see more, Lou
Not sure if the W-34 package included the paint on the wheel wells. A special option code called W-34 was available on the 1968-70 Toronado. This option included a cold air induction system for the air cleaner, a special performance camshaft and a "GT" transmission calibrated for quick and firm up-shifts and better torque multiplication at 5 mph. Dual exhaust outlets similar to the 1966-67 model years with cutouts in the bumper, were included with W-34. For 1970 only, the W-34 option also included special "GT" badges on the exterior of the car. W34 performance package added power windows, power steering, power brakes, clock, tilt / telescoping wheel steering wheel, front floor mats, front and rear bumper guards, optional aluminum wheels.

Hi, Lou! This was the last of the original generation Toronados, but the first to have exposed headlights. With those headlights so close together, it's likely you could tell what was coming toward you at night! The overall styling was sensational, and who can blame Oldsmobile for keeping it around for five model years! No wonder it gets so many stares at the shows! I didn't know much about the GT either, but I gotta say it's got louder trumpets than Herb Alpert! LOL!
Many thanks to you and Steve for taking all of us friends and countrymen along to watch the barrel...and escape from the ordinary!
Hi iswc27, Thank you for sharing your knowledge on the headlights. Happy to share the loud trumpets with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
That Toronado front end reminds me of '50's Nash styling. That headlight spacing, at night, gave the impression that the humongous car was narrower than it actually was.
Aside from the accessories in the way, having worked on them, the Toronado's and El Dorado's("E" chassis) were surprisingly easier to work on, like replacing spark plugs, water pumps and accessories, than say an Olds 98 or Caddy DeVille. The added smog equipment is what really got in the way.
Hi Automated Electronics, Thanks for letting me know what you see, and appreciate you sharing your knowledge, Lou
I've always loved Tornados. But never heard of the GT package and I used to own a history book on Oldsmobile (1897-1997). Great car, great style. 😊
Hi Ricky, Happy to read "I've always loved Tornados." :-) My pleasure sharing this GT version with you, Lou
Could never drive a car for 5 minutes and then put it away for four years, or worse -- take a car with a factory blue-printed 455 like this and drive it like an old lady. I have three vintage cars right now, can't afford 'em (one will need to go) and as a genuine working-person -- as in WORK for my money -- I can barely afford to maintain my cars and am getting too old to pull them apart if they break, but I will always, ALWAYS drive them as hard as General Motors' engineers designed them to be driven (harder even). Wealthy collectors and predatory profiteers can horde modern collector cars, horde parts cars, and even (I recently have learned) horde "future project cars" (much as they horde investment housing now) thereby making it harder and harder for us hobbyists to find and afford our single dream car, but that does not mean you have to kiss their asses. Soon they will pass on ----- their collection will disperse to other profiteers not just across the nation but across the world --- and their "curatorship" will all have all been a pile of BS.

Amazing.
Unbelievable car. Always loved the 70 Toro and 70 Riv. Both are transitional one year minor redesign and the styling on both is bold and graceful.
Hi David, Happy to read this one is "Amazing" :-) Lou
That Toronado is beautiful! And the engine sounds great. Watching 70’s cars always take me back to my childhood. The Toronado wasn’t for sale in Mexico so the first time I saw one was in a book when I was on my teens and always liked it’s shape.
Hi César, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Glad to read this car brings back memories of your childhood. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I knew someone a long time ago that had a 70 Tornado GT. Green with a black top & interior. But his had the bucket seats with shifter & console. I was in love with that car. Never saw one again like it. But I really prefer the 70 Riviera GS instead. Even though the Tornado was more expensive.

I bought a '67 Toro for $500 in 1979 for my shop class to rebuild. It was running fine but we still took out the engine and trans. The only part we could not work on was the front drive axle, it was very difficult and required specialized tools. Our instructor took it to an Olds dealer where he worked for that job. The final result was a bit disappointing in that it felt sluggish on takeoff. It was that way before the work as well but I thought due to age. The car was very heavy in front and the torsion bar suspension gave it a pogo effect over bumps even with new shocks. I think the best part was the gorgeous styling. First two years were the best.
Hi Alan, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Toronados were real common when I was in high school in the mid-1970s. I stopped often to look at them because there were not many cars that looked like them and few that were front-wheel drive. These were HUGE automobiles!
Hi Jed, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the cars you remember :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I have seen a few of those on RUclips and in magazines but never in person. If I remember, the speedometer rolled to 140 mph.

Hey LOU!! My big brother Lou right there, man. Oh man, you outdid yourself finding this Olds and sharing him with us, Lou. POW! That is one EPIC KNOCKOUT for ol' JV Johnny, man! BTW! How's THIS for branding, Lou?-"A middle aged (yet boyish) former JV baseball jock/fading pretty boy who loves cars, chicks and is often knocked out😵and carried off over a brother's shoulder-his stocking calves 'n feet limply swaying?"... Sound like a character who has his share of KO, car loving adventures lol 🤣🤪???? Whaddaya think, Lou? And THIS Oldsmobile....WOW! Ya know, some say the '66 Toro is the best looking. I beg to differ, man. I LOVE the bulldog, unique front end of this '70...more conservative and cohesive and badass, I think. The Toronado was always a "man's car" and I think that is really freakin' cool. This GT just takes it to a higher level. Just joy looking at that interior with all the wood trim (fake, I know. But who gives a crap? It looks COOL!) and chrome and such. Even the more base Toro in that booklet looked super handsome and cool. Man, I want one! God bless Steve there, and you too, big bro Lou. The only reason we didn't buy one or buy the Eldo....bench seat. We want individual moving front seats. If the driver needs the seat moved up... passenger has no choice.
A few Eldo's and Tornado's have individually powered front seats that look like a bench seat...

GM 1970, was low bar in styling, including those tacky head rests. The Toro is a bit better than the 1970 Riv tho. The color with white top and wide whites looks pretty good. The previous model was a home run in style, '66 to '69.
Hi Pat, Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
I believe my dad had a '67. It was beautiful...till he ran into a big oak tree in Ontario, Canada. He survived it. Later, he bought a behemoth 75 Toronado that my wife calls an "Iron Donkey" (Caribe Island expression).
