Hi Jason, good to see you are starting to add the products you need to the 76. I recommend a square back type awning so you maximise the coverage. Also I suggest you get an awning that does have legs also, wind does not care if your awning is free standing and can come up at at anytime. A little “told you so story”, my brother bought a new stock troopy off me and asked for my suggestion to what to fit to it. I told hom to go camping with the basics and think about what he needed not what what the Jone’s have. Of course he did not listen to me and he started buying products including an alucab 270 free standing awning.I told he made a mistake and reply was bla bla etc etc. Our first outing to the beach together, we set up our awnings, mine with poles and guy rops and his with nothing but the free standing. Needless to say, it was even 5mins his awning flew up over the roof rack, destroyed his awning in more than one place. The look on his face was priceless and I did not have to say a thing at all. he now has a different awning with poles and guy ropes.
Sounds sensible. I agree, while I'm after a free standing awning, you've got to have ability to anchor it as they're effectively a big sail. Guessing your brother didn't get it covered under warranty as there's some disclaimer about only setting up in suitable conditions or something?
Love my Wedgy rack on my 78 Series Troopy. Bugger-all wind noise even at highway speeds. I too had a Rhino on my previous 4x4 and that was horribly loud at highway speeds. I have the heavy duty freestanding brackets for my 270 awning and they do the job perfectly well in windy conditions. Use the awning regularly for fieldwork and camping as well. I have the Camp King Industries 270 freestanding awning (about 24kg). Bloody good awning, high quality and very strong, made in Australia BUT very expensive now compared to when I bought mine 18 months ago. I do like the awning very much but am interested in the Destination 4WD Awning now as they offer squared edges for more coverage.
Thanks glad to hear from someone who's had one a while. Having just got back from my first trip using the rack, it stood up very well. No impact on fuel economy and handled the overhead tree's well.
Nice rack Jason and thanks for sharing. Another good product comparison. I've actually got the FR on my 76 and it's brilliant. Not sure I like the full gutter spine for these reasons. Drainage may be an issue. Dirt and grime and leaf matter will build up along the gutter and behind the spine, contributing to potential rust. Finally it will make cleaning the roof difficult. Thanks for sharing
Yeah a lot of people love the front runner, I believe you can position the cross bars wherever you want on those which a lot of people like. I take your point on drainage and the risk of debris etc getting stuck behind the spine system, time will tell on that front. Cleaning the roof isn't much of an issue as the cross bars on the wedgetail are much narrower than the flat cross bars on a rhino or front runner rack. It's one of the reasons it's so light. So really the wedgetail I don't think can be called a 'platform' rack. More a cross bar rack maybe. Thanks for watching.
Nice job mate. Very happy with mine. Ill shoot you an email about a collab soon. I think youre not that far from me? Might be good to get 2 x 76 in a vid :)
Looks great Jason, good job mate 👍 You can’t beat a good solid alloy rack for a wagon 💪
Thx mate, yeah very happy with it, super solid, low profile and looks great.

Definitely mate, that'd be great. I'm based in Albury, so happy to coordinate something.
