Off The Beaten Path
Австралия
Добавлен 3 янв 2021
Off the Beaten Path is all about just that, getting off the beaten path. I am based on the border in North East Victoria so many of the trips I'll film will be in the Victorian High Country. In addition to trip video's I'll be doing reviews of products that I purchase and use on my trips.
My videos aren't likely to be the hardcore rock crawling, mud slogging, 5hrs to travel 50m type videos. I try and keep them informative about the area's I visit and give you some of the story and show a bit more rather than just the highlights, without making the video's too long.
Thanks For Watching!

VIC High Country - Riley's Monument to Shady Creek
Starting from the picnic area near Riley's Monument, we head back up Surveyors Creek Track, to Blue Gum Ridge Track after which we make our way to Gibson's Hut.
A quick visit here shows us the camp ground is well and truly full so we push on towards Wheelers Creek before finding a great campsite at Paddy Joy.
Some steep hills and the 76 works for it to drag the trailer up but get's there in the end.

VIC High Country - Mt Elliott to Riley's Monument
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.16 часов назад
Meeting up in Corryong VIC, we head along some familar roads to the start of the Mt Elliot Ridge Track. Taking the 76 and DOT up Mt Elliot for the first time shows the difference towing makes fairly quickly. Then we follow the almost 40km of the Mt Elliot Ridge Track, has to be one of the longest Ridge Line Tracks in the VIC High Country. Navigating our way via Surveyors Creek Track to Riley's ...

Nice video like your narrative on directions, I'm doing a big ride (big adventure bikes) down in the Vic highlands in early March and we are planning on riding through Wonnangatta just wondering if you know if there is a rideable bridge over the river near Eaglevale Camping area?? Regards Jeppe
Pays to be mindful about some tracks, if there has been no rain for a spell, the center of some tracks can dry right out and become very hard, yet the wheel paths are still soft and sometimes deep enough to get your diffs hung up on dry hard center, check base with a stick first, if wheel paths have soft base and center has hard, best to go around...
Another great drive Jason! I've travelled Elliott Ridge a couple of times & on to Wheelers Ck Hut. Your video has inspired me to plan another trip down that way 😉 Thanks for sharing, have a great Christmas & looking forward to more travels in the new year.
Thx mate, it's a great drive! Definitely worth doing if you haven't done it in a while.
Hi Jason, I've been very patiently waiting 2 months for the merch I have purchased. I understand you have moved, and it's very inconvenient. I always like to support smaller sites on RUclips which I think is important. Am I going to receive my merchandise before Christmas? If not, please send me a refund directly. Christmas and the lead up is a busy time and I'm understanding that you are in the development/construction industry. Everyone wants their properties done before the festive season, yeah who doesn't. I'm sorry, it's just gone on too long. That aside, I'd like to wish you, your family, and the 76, a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Regards, BobbyB.
Hi Bobby, I did mention at the time you asked about order, prior to you ordering that I couldn't guarantee when I'd be able to ship as I was moving house. Actually a bit more too it than that, but that's life. I've just logged into my buymeacoffee page and refunded you. I trust the refund will be received in a timely fashion. While I expect to be able to ship pending sticker and patch orders over the break, between Christmas and New Year I certainly can't guarantee arrival before christmas. Thank you to everyone else who is still waiting for theirs.
Cracking ep. We spend some time at Geehi and have always wanted to explore this area. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas!!
Geehi is a great spot. Personally love finding new parts of the high country to explore!
Amazing history lesson from a 100 years ago but there is no way i could wear crocs and would have done the same as you crossing the creek. My standards may not be high but i do have them 😂
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate the feedback. Yeah it was a sunny day so figured the shoes wouid dry pretty quick. They did.
Well done to all of you to drive Billy Goat in the rain when the track WAS in that condition. As of now iit should be repaired and will be totally different from now on.
Thanks Mate. Definitely different now. The guys from Endless 4x4 drove it recently and said it was chalk and cheese to what it was. Will take another 3-4 years of traffic to get challenging again.
Interesting how much a little extra weight can make on the tracks. I learnt that back in Lithgow a few years back with my old trailer that was only around 750kg. I love that Hang Glider hut too, thats a wicked little design and the monument was cool. A little history is always nice to hear & learn.
Thx mate, yeah plenty of gems to find in the high country!
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus Yeah thats for sure. Glad I know someone that can show me around when I finally get down there lol
Another great Track information, video on a beautiful area with lots of history. A place I’d like to go back to and explore a little bit more at a leisurely pace, i’m counting down the years to retirement! The only time you’ll see me is to refuel or stock up on food and beer ! Good job Jason.
Sounds good mate this was a great trip! Some amazing spots we came across.
Thanks for another interesting one. Have a Great Christmas.
Thx Russell, glad you enjoyed it. Was a lot of fun taking the DOT to the high country.
Enjoyed this series, quite a few tracks I’ve not done before, might head out and do a similar route over xmas.
Thx mate, was some new ones for me as well great pocket of the high country to explore!
Just wondering if this could done with a full offroad camper and Prado? great video
Something like a patriot X series I think so. Wouldn't want anything too heavy. Thanks for watching!
Another great video. Really enjoy watching your drives . We were up in the same area in January and came across that fallen tree on wet gully track. At the time it was very soft on the downhill slopes so we couldn’t go around it. We backtracked to Steiners Lane Which was extremely overgrown but added a few pinstripes getting to the bottom of it only to find a locked gate that led onto Private land so probably just as well you didn’t end up on that track anyway! Keep the great videos coming.
wow ok thx for the heads up on Steiners Ln, one of the hard things navigating in the high country sometimes. Bummer you couldn't get round the fallen tree, we were lucky it was an easy drive.
Wow , great video with great detailed commentary
Thx Mate, glad you enjoyed it. Thx for commenting
Hi champ, what are you using there for trip planning?
I use Memory Map on PC for my trip planning. Has the purchased HEMA map packs in it as well. This is what I make all the intro videos with.
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus nice one, what are you using on the track?
Great video. I’ve done Billy Goat and Blue Rag and soon I’m going to do these tracks. Thanks for showing these to me. Cheers
Sounds great Colin, they're well worth the drive. Not advertised as much as Billy Goat and Blue Rag but just as iconic in my opinion! Enjoy.
Such a beautiful place. Been at a wedding where the groom abseiled down on a rope to meet his bride. You're right that Castle Crag is seperated from the main face. I've never driven that track past Mitre Rock so thanks for showing it
Sounds like an epic wedding! Couldn't help myself, with not a lot of tracks to explore had to drive the one main one just to check it out! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I've been meaning to have a look at this place since moving to Murtoa a couple of years ago. I have my partner coming up to stay next week think i'll go for a look then.👍👌
Great idea, probably only an hour or so from Murtoa, worth the drive IMHO. Should be less busy than when i was there at easter too!!!
Great footage of Mt Arapilies , loved the scenery, well done 👏
Thx it's an epic spot to visit. A shame it's looking like getting closed to climbers which will have a huge impact on Natimuk and even Horsham to a lesser extent. Quite the landmark out that way.
5:22@@OffTheBeatenPathAuswe are loosing access to spots all over Australia on a regular basis. All in the name of Culture issues.
Mate first thing you need to do is get a new auto sparky! 100% of your issues have been caused by his poor workmanship, if you look at all those negative loads stacked on that shunt that is what has caused this issue. That shunt (battery sensor) has the entire load of the system running through it weather that’s incoming or outgoing. That shunt should have been connected to an appropriately sized bus bar to connect those loads to. Also the fact that he was unable to diagnose the issue without outside assistance is not encouraging because the issues you outlined at the start of the video pointed directly to issue that was found, pretty basic diagnostics really. It this sort of workmanship that has set fire to many 12v installations.
Thx for the heads up. Valid point on diagnosis. The install though was in the trailer when I bought it. Probably done for a previous owner.
What a pain in the rear right when you're about to head on a trip. Part of why I'm glad mine is so simple and being I installed it I know how to fault find easier. Glad you worked it out mate.
Yeah simple is good. I enjoy the simple VSR dual battery setup in the 76.
@OffTheBeatenPathAus I get ots nice being able to easily check levels and stuff but the more you add in the more can go wrong sadly. I do think a Multimeter should have shown where the fault there was though but if you are not confident working with electrical it's best to stay away.
Possibly, multimeter like so many other things packed for the move at this time (still haven't found it)
@OffTheBeatenPathAus always the way lol. I need to buy myself another one so I can keep one in the car. I have a good one at home but nothing for the car so I need one I think.
Can understand your frustration with that issue and glad it was a simple fix in the end. The most common i have seen in my travels is bad earth connections.
Does seem to be pretty common. Was extra annoying given I'd just recently had it looked it.
Glad you got it sorted. It would have been very frustrating.
Yeah right before a planned trip which was frustrating. Also only recently had had it looked it.
How do you compare the pajero to the 76 ? On and off road
Hey mate, I really should do a video discussing that. In sort, on road - not really a comparison - the Paj was super comfortable and easy to drive being a modern quiet auto. Off road, both capable but I'd give the edge to the 76, primarily due to clearance with the body on chassis solid axle design. I don't have a lift in the 76 but running larger tyres (slightly) than I had on the paj. Also with the gearing on the steep stuff the 76 is way ahead (particularly on descents). In a perfect world if money was no object, I'd keep the Paj for a daily and use the 76 offroad only....
Nice Jase. How many Littes are you filling up to get 1000kms? Mustn’t be empty
About 150L generally, that said my distance calcs are pretty rough as the larger tyre size makes the odo inaccurate....
@@OffTheBeatenPathAus verify your trip meter with GPS or an speedo / trip meter app mate. The 1” larger tyres shouldn’t have thrown your meter out too much at all. 100mm lower clearance to gain 76Litres of diesel isn’t too bad. Dash gauge is now barely even a guide hahah Safest way I’ve found is: always fill to the brim at the servo. Then fill up and 3/4. Next tank do 1/2, then next tank 1/4. And note the actual litres filled at those increments, much easier to manage your fuel/range this way! Keep up the mods Jase 👌
Surprising how much, over a long distance tyre size changes things. Even in the Paj when we did the Variety trip we had trip notes telling us to turn a direction in x number of kilometers and we'd be out by 2-5km often times. Yeah generally fill all the way up. Just about got dialled the gauge and how that relates to the tank.
Just looking at this table atm (special, 383 AUD), thanks for the great review Jase. Falls in the 'buy once, buy quality' category if you ask me.
Have to agree... been very happy with this, had it a bit over a year now and still looks great. Worth it IMHO. Love that you can sit hot things straight on it.
Looks great
Thx mate, epic part of the high country
Long range tanks are good investment and despite the feeling of being more expensive to fill, there not as you dont fill up as often. Enjoy.
Very true and one of my favourite mods to the vehicle so far. Particularly that due to the longranger design I didn't lose any departure angle...
Mate, must be nice to have stickers. Still waiting for mine, and the cloth patches. Are they going to be here before Christmas?🤔........ The only thing about the long range tank is the cost shock of filling it up, but it's all relative to the extra distance it gets you at the end of the day. Cheers, BobbyB.
Bobby, yes I hope to get them out before christmas. As i mentioned when you ordered, I've just moved and they were packed and I haven't found them yet. Sorry for the delay happy to refund.
Is the road good to tow a caraven
Would depend on the size. The road is pretty twisty with tight corners. I wouldn't recommend a large van.
I had the exact same issue with my own X2. Flashing screen and not charging and I was ready to throw it out the window. I replaced the usb power cord which I purchased from Jaycar. Problem is now solved no more issues and I am very happy with it.
They can definitely be picky with power source. In my case running of hard wired USB ports that were put in by my auto elec for the purpose. Makes no difference which one I run it off. Same intermittent problems....
I guess I was lucky. Now waiting for the latest fix from Hema to rectify the last update stuff up!!! Supposed to be ready within the next 10 days.
For anyone still interested, the ARB hose dimensions are as follows: OD: 11mm ID: 7.5mm
Thx for the heads up!
Absolutely love it ❤️
Thanks, the guys at Offline build a great van.
Hey mate have a stock 2023 bt50. Would you recommend having a higher clearance for the track?
It's a little while since I last did Blue Rag now, over 12 months, I have heard it's getting a little chewed out but you should be fine just choose your line on the couple of sections where there are wombat holes. Also being a 2023, probably has decent traction control anyway? So less of an issue. It's not really a track you need high clearance for. Enjoy
Thanks, another place to add to the ever growing list for my next high country trip.
It never ends, so much to see in the high country, so many places to explore.
Great little video, thank you Jason. Beautiful views.
Thx mate, cracking spot to visit if you're in the area!
You might need to wear a tinfoil hat on that viewing platform! 🙈😳🤣😂🦘
Could be a few radio waves up there for sure :-)
Did this in a LJ 80 Old Suzuki Jimny in the early 80's, fun trip except the gear levers kept jumping out of position. It was a total piece of shit but the views were fantasic! The track wasn't anywhere near like your video, thats for sure!
Definitely would have changed a bit since the 80's for sure. It was a lot smoother than the last time I did it and that was only 3-4yrs ago...
Cheers for that Jase, always want to come across from Benambra - Corryong Rd and check that fire tower - summit out as a short cut to the Bonong Region
Thx matecits worth it great spot to visit with epic views on clear days
I grew up in Dartmouth when the dam was being built. You've made me want to go back. Haven't been to the fire tower since 1977. Thanks for that. 👍🐕🤠

Thx for posting and commentary on tracks I haven’t done. I run a Prado (2” lift, tyres etc) and given the right conditions it looked as if I could do ok Cheers
A prado with a 2" lift will go just about anywhere. They're more capable than many give them credit for. Definitely the tracks in this video very doable!
Thanks Jason for providing this content, I appreciate the time and effort that goes into the production of same. Cheers..( I always watch until the end and want. more).
Thx Russell, much appreciated! McMillan Spur was a great find, fun drive without the risk of breaking things on the car :-)
What's your preferred off-road mapping application? Seen awful reviews of the HEMA iOS application.
Good question. Currently run the Hema HX2 and ran the HX1 before that. However have had issues with both devices. In the midst of moving right now to an android tablet running Memory Map, which is the app I use on my PC to plan trips and record the intro to most of my videos.
Another nice one Jase. The Macalister at Burgoyne would have been a breeze to cross at that level. Great trip. Mate, my merch still hasn't arrived yet. Cheers, BobbyB.
