Dementus is an EPIC FAIL (and that's good)

  • Don't look at the numbers! Despite Furiosas underwhelming box office performance, it is an entertaining ride into the Wastelands of the Mad Max-World. Chris Hemsworth's delivers one of his best performances of his career and steals the show with his portrayal as the compelling villain Dementus. I'm exploring the symbolism behind Dementus' color-changing cape, his transformation from a messianic figure to a warlord, and finally to a ruler consumed by darkness. Dementus' chaotic journey and flawed ambitions contrast with Immortan Joe. Dementus' epic fail is a triumph in storytelling!

I was 13 when I saw Fury Road and I'm 22 now. Who was Barbie's target audience? Women. Furiosa's target audience? Action fans and Mad Max cultists. There's a massive size difference between the 2 groups.

      When Praetorian and Furiosa go to the vegi town why aren't they met with an army?
      Why didn't Dementus just kill them in battle like what we would expect to see of many battles over generations of movies?
      What was Furiosa doing on the truck? Why did she attack Praetorian? Why did he drive off and then walk back to her - why did he fall for her considering she threatened his life and he knew nothing about here (ok, that's a rhetorical question. You actually buy their q minute relationship?).
      How did Furiosa get back to the Citadel after she lost her arm?
      Didn't you at least wonder why Furiosa could just grab a car and go kill him so easily in the end? Isn't it completely anti-climatic after a montage?
      All these questions are a way to give you a sense as to why this movie flopped. Not to mention the bad CGI. Also, it's length. There was an hour in the movie before we saw adult Furiosa. I mean, who cares about her mother or even Dementus if Furiosa is not even there, driving the plot?

    I'm torn on this, loved Fury Road, yet came in with low expectations for Furiosa - overall it was a decent movie, but I don't have the same eagerness to rewatch it again. For me Dementus was the most conflicting part of the movie, albeit a lot of people praise the character, I couldn't shake off a weird feeling that it's not quite working out. Ok, this video sheds the light on the concept of epic fail villain, which rings true, but then again, with, sorry, a bit incompetent leader, how did he manage to gather people around him that were eager to please him? I like the movie, but somehow it also frustrates me in ways I'm unable to explain, which also makes me a bit sad.
    I really don't mind Max not being in the movie, except for those few seconds, reality being that his arc is kind of really done, there isn't much to him no more, no happy ending no nothing, really. Exploring Furiosa arc is interesting, though I feel Theron did a better job at the character. I think and I'm hopeful that there is so much more in the Wasteland to tell and see beyond Max, it really is a good franchise.

      His character is a charismatic warmonger, and I think the people who follow him are for the promise of material wealth and favor. Like a leader of a band of mercenaries, or like someone winning a popularity contest. He is often in the frontlines with his men as a valiant leader, but immediately loses the trust of (some) of his men once he starts sacrificing them (as we saw with Octoboss and his underlings in the film). The point with his character is that charisma does not equal to competence, as he is shown to be incapable of maintaining Gas Town to the point that its people attack the war rig for supplies, incapable of maintaining allies (as we saw with Octoboss and the council) and a point was also made with the Bullet Farmer that Dementus is not upholding his end of the deal of guzzolene for bullets.
      This is a direct comparison to the Immortan Joe who, despite being rather imposing, does not hold the same level charisma but is vastly more competent and has instead built his army on an idea, like a religion.

      I agree with your review. I absolutely loved Fury Road but I don't think I'll ever watch Furiosa again.
      I really didn't enjoy Anya as Furiosa. I didn't like the explanation for her arm coming off and her riding a bike up a mountain after losing an arm. It was too unbelievable for me. She didn't sell the character for me. I think the backstory didn't make sense for me.
      They ruined Rectus. They should have hired someone else as this time around he just seemed extra dumb and fat. He felt like a Stooge brother.
      The war boys all seemed dumber than before. They all seemed more vibrantly white and extreme than before. It seemed like many more had extreme birth defects. While in Fury Road they all felt more realistic with their defects.
      The CGI was jarring. You could feel the transitions every time they zoomed in. I wish they went a more practical route. Even with the CGI scenes depicted. Why make Dementus CGI climb his tow truck over an unbelievably steep mountain when it could have been more tame and still put him 1v1 with Furiosa. Like in Fury Road the 1v1 was done because only the monster truck climb a small pile of rubble and in this movie Chris goes mock 10 up the mountain.
      Dementus was a lame character. Like the scene with him trading Furiosa made it seem like a big deal only for him to forget about her in no time flat.
      The immortan joe replacement was awful. Could they not alter the voice to be similar?

As he blunders his way through the film, he becomes a murderous war-leader, and finally becomes just an angry shell of violence and revenge. As Dementus himself points out, by the end of Furiosa, Furiosa is similarly just an empty shell, only dealing death and violence. They are no different- Or are they?
    At the start of "Fury Road," We see her lead first the warboys, and later Max and the Brides to survive their crusade to the Green Place and back. At the end, she conquers the Citadel, and instead of becoming a warlord Like Immortan Joe or Dementus, Furiosa uplifts the desolate and works to turn the Citadel into a Paradise. Esentially becoming a reverse Dementus. That's my read, anyhow.

    I interpret both of the big Fury Road era Mad Max villains as representing different authoritarian ideologies, and their respective weaknesses and strengths. Dementus is communism. He's covered in red, he uses populist rhetoric, and his system collapses because he can't actually deliver what he promises to his followers, and he's riven by internal divisions (the russian civil war was also famously whites vs reds, which the cloak change references.
    Immortan Joe, on the other hand, is something like Religious Fanaticism/Fascism. The man himself is worshipped as a god, and his followers obey him to a far greater degree than Dementus, but Joe's system ultimately collapses when his godhood is shown to be a lie, and when Nux defects as a result and helps to ultimately defeat his army and assist in his death at Furiosa's hands

    The value of Dementus is to show that not just any warlord, no matter how clever, can rule an empire as productive and stable as Joe's in the Wasteland. It demonstrates the importance of good leadership, because without it no matter how bad or cruel their rule was, the absence of it will be far worse.
    Another month, and Joe would've had his heir, at which point Furiosa could've stolen the breeders and likely Joe wouldn't have cared... now the empire has an uncertain and likely doomed future, due to Furiosa's misguided ideas about freedom in a damned world at the margins of survival.

    • @onetwothree9
      @onetwothree9 Месяц назад

      I'm not sure the Empire would have lasted even if Furiosa hadn't taken the wives. Joe was pretty old and sick, it's quite likely he would have died before his perfect heir was anywhere near adulthood, creating a power vacuum. The leadership of the citadel would fall to Rictus and Corpus, who have a chance at ruling well together, with Corpus' smarts and Rictus' strength, but should one of them die, then it's game over. That doesn't even take into account that Bullet Farmer and People Eater might try to take over themselves or that Joe's death is bound to disillusion some of the war boys.

    • @LabTech41
      @LabTech41 Месяц назад +1

      @@onetwothree9 It's safe to say that a succession crisis was definitely possible, but his death made the empire's fall all but certain.
      I have to imagine Joe had a plan on how a succession issue would unfold, and I suspect he was acutely aware of just how much time he had.
      I think the Furiosa movie made it pretty clear that the Empire had to be run as a triumvirate, because unless you're personally present at the hub of operations, you're likely to get your stuff taken from you. One of the 3 trying to take another guy's stuff is likely going to lose both spots, but that's how things stayed so stable.
      Rictus and Corpus are competent in their respective domains, and I think Joe would've lasted long enough to at least make an impression on his heir; I also don't think that any of his surviving children would be a threat, because they seem cool with Joe's plans. I think the heir would've been groomed by the inner circle of the Citadel until he came of age, and there would've been a couple people who'd handle nominal responsibilities... one of which could've been Furiosa, who at THAT point could've gotten some reasonable reforms passed.
      As for the War Boys, I think Joe would've had enough time to tweak the Cult of V8 to allow the succession without major issue; maybe something like saying that the gods have called upon him to ascend to Valhalla so that he might ride eternal as he promised, and from there he would lift up the faithful, all shiny and chrome. Then, afterwards, each successor would essentially become a prophet, speaking on his behalf.

    that's not how movies work. No one cares about symbolism or themes..If you want the movie you are talking about, that's Game of Thrones, it's Julius Ceasar or the Godfather. It's about creating complex and sympathetic villains full of irony.
    But this is just a dumb action movie.
    Dementus wants Furiosa? That's the drama. It's kind of silly in this world where we are grossly shown he is just a violent thug like so many violent thugs. We are supposed to think that he wants her because he misses his own children? Then why does he slaughter her mother and make us hate him? By doing so, it is impossible to treat him either seriously or sympathetically, and so the character remains just a two-dimensional villain.
    Chris Hemsworth is just ridiculous here. He is in a different movie (as Dave Chen suggests). He makes jokes in a world that is serious. He is as absurd as Tina Turner's Aunty Entity. It is farce.
