The raised blacks are just a design choice in the police station. Later parts of the game shift away from that look and the problem goes away. If you set up the game to push black in the early hours, you are going to be crushing alot of visual information in the later parts. I can understand if users don't like it, but it is the intended look of the title.
Yeah that’s the only area where I noticed the blacks didn’t look right. Like you said it’s a design choice because everywhere else the black levels look amazing.
same with all of the subsequent remakes, there are certain levels with raised black and blue tint to the screen, took me a couple of hours of tickering with hdr settings in re4r and playing the re3r to understand this.
I was trying this game with DTM ON and HGiG on my C1 using the PS5 version. I ended up playing with HGiG enabled and it looks absolutely stunning. No black crush or anything. DTM On makes this game look very "greyish" and it doesn't look right imo.
Only the police station has an increased black level, and that is intentional. The rest of the game looks very good. I prefer DTM over HGiG in this game. When comparing SDR and HDR, I always choose the tone mapping mode that is closer to the source material in SDR. In this case, it's definitely DTM. God of War also looks much better with DTM. There's no other way to explain to me why Kratos looks like he's standing in a dark area with HGiG, when he's really standing in the bright sunlight ^^. I always compare SDR (how it should look) and choose the tone mapping mode based on that comparison. But I think this is subjective.
Try the game on low black level instead of high or auto and it made a huge difference with the washed out black/gray. Adjust the hdr from there. Lmk what you think

This is exactly why it’s so difficult to figure out HDR settings in modern games. So many of the effects they use to create atmosphere nowadays are almost indistinguishable from the way a “washed out” picture looks when you have it set up wrong. You can drive yourself crazy wondering whether it’s intentional or not! I thought the black level was raised too, but as soon as I got out of the police station the shadows looked better than almost any game I can think of. I spent a while admiring them in the gun shop and the sewers. I think that’s just one seriously dusty police station.
I always use your recommended hdr settings but in this case I think -3, +2 with LG C1 looks sooooo much better. And yet no clipping in highlights. Your settings in this video made my game image look kind of dull. I play in a dark room and my tv is correctly calibrated.
The washed out or grey black levels really only are in the police station. The rest of the game doesn't look that way. I'm really happy that my Brightness settings where exactly the same as yours! I personally did not notice any difference in Max Brightness Slider.... so I left it on 0 ^^ but if you tell me now that -2 should be the right setting on my CX I will change it.
your contribution came at the right time.. i probably played with the settings for 2 to 3 hours yesterday.. there is a scene in the game where you make films for photos its a safe room.. you can test it yourself in the room. .you have perfect black level to the touch as soon as you open the door where the window is next to the stairs and you step out extremely slowly you will see the surroundings change due to the flashlight and other lighting shining through the window..
I agree with you that I think it was a design choice. If you play RE3: Remake, they don't have the same weird shadow levels in dark scenes. I have played hundreds of hours or RE2: R on PS5, XSX, and PC and I hate that they did that but it is indeed the game's design, not an issue with elevated black levels.
I didn't even know there were brightness issues. I played this back when it was released on my 4K TV with HDR support, and the brightness was perfect with default settings for me. Then I decided to play it on my monitor that doesn't support HDR, and my god, I could barely see. Thanks to your video, I can safely play this game on my 165 HZ monitor with great brightness. Thank you so much.
You are ALWAYS my goto channel for HDR content. I'm going through RE2 again and I immediately realized something was wrong with the HDR in the PC version of the game.
Yeeahhh, the new Resident Evil games seem to also have a weird screen-door effect with shadows unless you up the resolution scale to like 1.5-1.8x, its weird as fuck. I've also noticed the blacks and areas that should be really black are hit or miss
I’m sorry not sorry, but SDR looks much better overall. I can’t get HDR to look decent on my G2. Like there is fog everywhere. I’m standing in the lobby with Leon trying your setting and it’s a mess. Whatever setting I try SDR looks more appealing to me. HDR may show more detail, I love detail, but by design they are not good in this game.
Remember tvs today are can achieve higher brightness in real scenes than in test patterns..it all depends on the content and the tvs processing capabilities
I know the game is older but could you do a video on mortal kombat 11's hdr? It has a tricky hdr set up due to having a weird standard, high end, professional option in its hdr menu
First of all, thank you for your explanations, they are easy to understand and can be implemented without further ado. You mentioned and explained the settings for the PS5 and Xbox here, now I would like to ask how it looks for PC gamers? Can "we" use the settings you use for the Xbox or are there more specific settings? A week ago I bought the LG Oled 48C17 and I am very happy with it :). Thank you in advance for your reply and I wish you all a nice day.
I tried RE2 PS5 upgrade I agree with 100% on SDR recommendations I got the best result but I use HDR off on the PS5 settings HDR mode no way that is a proper HDR it's very bad in my opinion, SDR mode is the way to play this game
disagree , one easy test is go to the helicopter crash zone at the police station with the fire and toggle hdr on and off. just look at the higher detail in the flame with HdR on , it’s like that for the whole game imo.
Thank you so much for all the help and content you provide to help us understand how to calibrate our games I have been studying for a little over two years with no tools whatsoever thankfully you have helped me so much I have a TCL six series r 635 was a bit confusing because in SDR Color space is auto for sure native oversaturate but when I go to Dolby vision native in Dolby Vision does what sdr does in auto but in Dolby vision auto oversaturate my colors so I do not play in Dolby vision anymore because I do not know what it’s supposed to be but for SDR you have totally save me A lot of time thank you again and keep up the good work
It's only effecting the police station in the game and seems intentional. The rest of the game is not affected. Even in SDR the police station seems to be more grey... so it has nothing to do with HDR.
Have you tried (blasphemous, I know) setting RE2 remake with DTM on? white square disappears on last click in ps5 version. Pc version HDR is broken and the clicks do not change the proper amount as they did before. Nvidia broke something about HDR on pc. Previously with HGIG, 5th click white square disappeared. now 2-3rd square. Nvidia broke the hdr range
Yep, I remember playing the demo on my C9 back then and not liking those grey areas one bit. I was able to make something of it by lowering brightness. But that won't cut it for my S95B, since it doesn't have much a actual brightness control settings. I don't have the game, but I do believe the demo is still around? I might go check that. Speaking of S95B, any updates on when/if you're still getting one? I look forward to your findings once you do.
Brilliant video as always! I’m going to play this again after I finish Miles Morales, What would you say is the best visual mode option to play the game on?
Still, super job you are doing… i am using the s95b settings to my a95k , and it looks superb… This is the stuff you are getting more subscribers on… Keep it up Thanks from Denmark.🤙
Tried it on my S95B. With the max brightness I still see the rectangle in the middle. And for the other one the blue box is much longer than the red one. But I guess that's correct? But it goes against Capcom's advice of how both blue and red areas should be the same size.
Fog is what i think you are saying. It is pronounced with a harder g at the end rather than the sharp sound you are using that sounds more like it pronounced fock or foque., just get that hard G at the end which you can practice by saying the word Girl but leaving out the R & L so Gi once you have that down begin to emphasize less on the I and just the G. Then combined with fo with that hard G you will get fog. . Another word is Mist almost like missed but a T at the end. Another word you can use is Har which is the fog that comes in from the sea. It is pronounced like you are say Ha as in Ha ha but with the r at the end so Ha r , Har. I also think you may be talking about light rain when the rain particles are so small we don't call it rain but rather drizzle. EDIT: as i watched further in to the video it is mostly steam we would use to describe that like you get from boiling a kettle. I would use steam for the stuff coming from the ground pipes and mist from the rain rather than fog. Fog is when you have that really thick mist that when you are driving you can't see far ahead so you use your "Fog" lights. Hope this helps. I like to learn languages and always like to know if i pronounce the words correctly

I will have to agree with Michael on this one. I usually just play HDR on other games that is available, but this is the only game where I just leave it in SDR and it looks really good.
It does not Michael. The Game in HDR with Settings -2 / -7 with an LG CX and DTM ON looks nearly exactly as the SDR source material looks like but with much brighter and more colorful highlights. It's just not true, that SDR looks better, it can't.
What’s funny is if you leave your Black level to full on the console and the set your black level to low on your tv, it fixes the washer out look even though it’s a mismatch. It looks better in my opinion

Yeah, just play them in SDR like I do. It's not like you're forced to play in HDR, it's just an option
It's the style from the game. RE3 has a different style.
