If you use the international dateline as the boundary, Alaska contains the northernmost, westernmost, AND easternmost points in the US.
how does the eastern part work though? Is some part of Alaska on the other side of the dateline?
@@Marczking Yes, some of the Aleutian Islands are.
No, no part of Alaska crosses the dateline, you're thinking of the Prime Meridian. (Which you could also use to decide east and west)
@@oscartheamazing6745 nice knowledge
Alaska crosses the anti meridian, but they moved the international dateline to between Russia and USA
2:37 "Barraca abana" literally means "(the) hut shakes" and is a very popular catch phrase from a tv comedy sketch from the early 2000's here in Portugal. (In the shop there, they added the "Q(ue)" which makes it "hut that shakes").
I remember a lot of puns being made with the name of Barack Obama when he became president 😅

Interesting 😲
So "Copa Q'abana" would be "the cup that shakes"?

0:47 You pointed to the peninsula of Peniche, which is NOT the westernmost point of continental Europe.
Cabo da Roca, a few km down the coast, is the correct answer.

Exactly! Thank you for pointing that out! Cabo da Roca, in Colares, is THE Western end of Continental Europe.

Because the anti meridian passes through part of Russia shouldn’t part of Siberia be the westernmost point of europe (according to your definition)?
Tasty
@@stevenhale2935 very.
I came to the comments to say exactly this! I honestly thought that this was where the video would ultimately conclude.
After all, at one point in the video, he defined any territory that belongs to a European country as being included in this, even if that territory is physically in another continent. So Russia has territory in Asia that goes so far East, it crosses the anti-meridian therefore becoming West, making it the territory the furthest West that belongs to a European country.
"Don't make up your own rules because it gets to make Iceland special."
My favourite time pass has become invalid :(
11:47 fun fact, the Treaty of Tordesillas was made before they had discovered South America, so they didn't know it cut through part of America (the idea was for the Americas to belong to Spain and Africa to Portugal) and the Portuguese arrived in Brazil by accident while going around a storm on their way to India going around Africa and noticed that land was on their side of the Treaty, so they claimed it theirs.
Of course the portuguese didn't arrived in Brazil by accident, there are multiple indications that the portuguese were well aware of the existence of land west of Africa, before the official arrival in 1500.
Otherwise, why would John II demand that the line of the treaty would be moved further to the west?
While the question of "What's the westernmost point of Europe" is simplified if you specify the mainland continent, and not the possessions of its countries, that doesn't help narrow the definition for "What's the Easternmost point or Europe?", since that depends on what you include in Europe.
Is Turkey in Europe? Is Russia? The Urals?
Basically, the answer to any such question of "how far does ___ extend?" is "Well, it depends on how you define "___".
"If you think about it, anything is valid if you just use enough words and reasons"

Disappointed you didn't mention Cabo da Roca, which is the westernmost point on the European mainland. You instead focused in on Peniche, Portugal, which is not as far west, in actuality. You can see Cabo da Roca from the western balcony of Pena Palace, on the summit of a very high hill in beautiful Sintra, Portugal. One of my favorite places I've traveled to in Europe.

Take a very close look at the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, Gulf of Finland, and the Gulf of Riga... and look at them as a whole, to see what it looks like.
If that does not work... then imagine that the very top section of the Gulf of Bothnia is a man's head seen from his right side, so he is looking towards the east... and then imagine that the very bottom right of the Baltic Sea (where roughly Poland and Lithuania meet) is the mans knee...
And then, with what I said above in mind... *really closely*... look at what all of those 4 bodies of water looks like when looked at as a whole... trust me... once you see it, you can never unsee it... XD
And amusingly enough, it is sort of historically correct as well... XD
The first time I noticed this was back in the late 80's in school, but being shy and all I just never told anyone. What has surprised me though is that considering the size of the internet, and how many people use it, and how humans are sort of hardcoded to see patterns and what not... an unbelievably low amount of people have ever mentioned it online. I would also like to know the answer to this question: what is the farthest point in Europe from the sea/ocean? (Both including and not including Russia.)
I know there are "continental poles of inaccessibility" but I think that takes the whole Eurasian continent and is somewhere on the China/Kazakhstan border
@UpNorth Cool! I was trying to figure it out using a circle tool on Google Maps. I didn't think of Belarus, but that's a good point. It looks to me like Drahňov barely beats out southeastern Belarus.

0:47 you're pointing at the wrong place on the western most point in mainland Portugal. It's actually further south just west of Lisbon in Cabo da Roca. I've been there. They even have a sign there which says "Western most point of the European Continent" or should I say "Ponta mais ocidental do continente Europeu" since it's written in Portuguese for some reason.
0:30 Australia is not a continent, it’s a country in Oceania
technically the british islands east of europe or the French, near Antarctica, east of europe

Title: Most western part of Europe

wait north and south are also arbitrary, you can keep going after you get there, spheres are special when it comes to 3d objects
Not really. The axis of rotation defines two unique points which we call the North Pole and the South Pole. But any spherical or 3d coordinate system is arbitrary, so you're somewhat right too.
Wait since Russia is part of Europe, and if you are measuring distance from the prime meridian, Russia would be on the other side of the world. Meaing you could count all of Russia to be Europpean. Meaning the border between Latvia Estonia and Russia could be argued to be the western most part of Europe. Even though it is east of the line.
0:48 Not to be annoying, but what you show is "Peniche" and the actually most western point in continental Europe is "Cabo da Roca" close to the town of Sintra, just a little bit south from Peniche.
The most western part of Europe is an infimensial distance east of the Greenwich Meridian line. The most eastern part of Europe is an infimensial distance west of the GM line.
Oh wait, are we supposed to be counting the International Date Line instead? What's "east" and what's "west" anyway.
The Sinai peninsula is part of Asia, all of panama is part of North America, Greenland is to Denmark what Bermuda is to the UK, and Iceland is the westernmost point of Europe
Unless you start counting territories and possessions. Even East and West are arbitrary on a sphere.
Why are Europe and Asia considered separate continents? They are clearly sandwiched together.
Because different civilizations arose in each with different language groups. The original Asia from Europes POV was Asia Minor, the Turkish Peninsula, and everything else east of it. The fact Europe and Asia connected up north was irrelevant since none of the civilizations involved (European, Chinese, Indian, etc) extended up there. It's a historical artifact.
its actually because all of History is just set up for some insane continent battle royale and having Eurasia would just be overkill.
@@thadeusgaspar224 😂
Cabo da Roca, Portugal, is THE Western end of Continental Europe, not Peniche. Fair attempt, though. :)
If you count greenland as part as Denmark, when even if it is,it barely is,then canada is basically still UK
Video idea: Western / eastern most point of the united states
Impersonating Tom Scott's wardrobe eh?
I missed the mention of "Französisch-Guayana" or in english "French Guiana" ( that Difference always tricks me when there is talk about Guyana.. since its also valid in german to say Französisch-Guyana xD )
Oh and I missed a map of continental plates that shows us whats the real deal! :o
Fun fact it is theorized that the reason for Portugal having access to part of south america in the treaty of Tordesilhas is because portugalnactually already knew about south america and just kept it a secret until they couldn't anymore, so they negotiated with the pope to have that bit of what is now brazil so they could then expand it a lot (which we did look at the size of brazil vs the size of the land given to us in the treaty lol)
asking for money after making a 17 minute video that sums up as "east and west are made up" is pretty bold lol
Money is made up so give me your made up numbers so I can buy lobster rolls
@@ibx2cat as usual, it depends what you mean by "money"
4:18 Thank you for pronouncing it correctly, it's quite rare that actually happens
the side at which you drive can actually be important. Driving on the left means people's better eye (right eye) look at the middle of the road, and thus see cars more easily, and thus reduce the chances of car accidents.
I think I draw the line at iceland
Iceland's a good compromise since the two plates meet there. However, as toycat explains, it depends on whether you want a geographical or political definition of a continent.
Toycat be like: "But wait! THERE IS MORE!!!"
I live in Newfoundland let’s go best province in Canada. Also I think toycat is the first person ever to pronounce Newfoundland correctly
Did you know you can't actually drive on the left side of the road, because there is only a right side and a wrong side.

Ok, but the only way you know you aren't still going north or south is when the navigator says "uh ah, you're going the other way again". :)
Can we all agree it's açores ,because of the European tectonic plate.
7 out of 9 are, but Flores and Corvo are on the North American tectonic plate.
@@Ferreira0504 that's true. I meant the most western Island on the European plate.

Why is the rthumbnail pointing to the most eastern place of europe
If we only count the european plaque it would be still Portugal as the Azores are in North American, European and African plaques.
If those islands owned by European countries count, then why doesn't Siberia count?
You're already throwing away any reasonable definition of Europe to include French Polynesia, so why not Siberia? It's owned by a European country according to your rules.

I live in Bermuda and I can tell you that we were just a random ass volcano in the middle of the ocean, so we don't really actually have any connection to the Caribbean
As a Spaniard i do not even know how to feel about all the comments that 2cat made about Spain.
It is so confusing with english language…
In swedish we make a difference between ”continent” and something we call ”world part”.
Continent is a physical body of land (with its islands).. So for example africa, australia or asia…. Well still not easy since what is a part of a continent or what is its own continent still isn’t really clear…
Eurasia+africa sometimes is one but often two but also three 😅 america can be one or two…
But ”world part”… that is defined from history, culture and politics.
But in english continent kinda serves both meanings and that is confusing.
Today's lesson was that considering all opinions and interpretations are confusing. Thank you Andrew Toycat Andrews 👍
Man: "I see no directions"
People from South Sudan/ East Timor: 😓😬😬😓🤬
In both most western points in Portugal you got them wrong. First it's not Peniche, but Cabo da Roca. The other one, Its not the Island of Flores but a small island nearby. Even if you use as a tectonic plate, Portugal would have the most western point in Europe, thanks to the fault lines in the Açores.
A big aspect of your video is that you're judging a geological and geographic future, and then explain it using the political aspect of things
Hi Toycat!
Fun fact: why i think greenland is european is because that its first belonged to denmark and most ppl there are danish
3:52
That map marking the Sinai peninsula as a part of Africa is just outright wrong according to the way I've learned the continents.
For us continent borders *can* and *will* cross through countries.
So Turkey, Armenia, Russia etc, all have parts that's European and parts that's not.
toycat, have you ever heard of google books?
