This was a magical place where I once grew up, was very emotional to see the place again all these years later and watching you guys tred in the same steps as I did when I was 4 to the age of21. This lovely home holds so many memories of my childhood and the people I knew there. Well done lads for giving me this gem of a look back in time feeling. Thank you so much.
As a British borne Latvian I have some fond memory's of this place. I stayed here one summer holiday when it was owned by the Latvian welfare fund as my mum worked as a care nurse for the elderly residents This was late 90s.I remember playing in the grounds and going down into the bar it had a cd juke box I used to put on all sorts from fat boy slim to spice girls much to the annoyance of the local punters haha
amazing and smooth video! any chance you will be going back to the old cinema in Colchester as a revisit? (as i didn't have chance to comment on that video)
Thank you 🙏👍👍 this was a really fun explore and the architecture and shear amount of rooms were incredible !! We are glad you enjoyed it 👌 ⚡️STAY TUNED⚡️
I knew about Rowfant House many years ago, as my ancestors owned it. Thomas Whitfield (his Coat of Arms are in the glass over the stairs, and he submitted his pedigree to Royal College of Arms on Queen Victoria Street over 400 years ago) was a London lawyer. His son, Rev. Henry Whitfield sailed to America and helped to found Guilford, Connecticut. Henry Whitfield's home is a museum. Henry Whitfield sailed back to England several years later, died and was buried in Winchester Cathedral. His daughter, Abigail Whitfield married Rev. James Fitch in America. I descend from that couple. I commissioned a watercolor of Rowfant House several years ago. Mrs. Sarah Blackett-Ord painted Rowfant House and sent it to me. It hangs on my living room wall today. I live in Kansas. Mrs. Blackett-Ord lives at Whitfield Hall, co: Northumberland, England. Thanks for the video; however, I have such sadness, now.
Hi Thanks for your reply, wow !! - that's a lot to take in. I fully understand your sadness.. its a great shame the building is now abandoned and looking run down compared to how it was. A friend of mine went to a wedding reception there when it was in its prime and remembers it being very grand inside. Hopefully it'll be restored and not turned into flats etc.. I'd like to see the painting, thanks again for your reply and for watching our video 🙏
Thanks for the reply. I also have hanging on my wall, a copy of Samuel Hieronymus Grimm's watercolor of Rowfant House that he painted in 1787. I think I purchased it from the British Library. Also, I have a watercolor painted by Mrs. Sarah Blackett-Ord titled RandleHolme, a bastle near Alston a few miles south of Whitfield Hall. A junior branch from the main Whitfield line owned it; then, that branch moved south to East Sussex, then west to West Sussex where Robert Whitfield built Rowfant House. I purchased all three (Rowfant House painted about 10 years ago; Copy of a painting of Rowfant House by Grimm, 1787; and, RandleHolme also painted by Mrs. Blackett-Ord about eight years ago.) Mrs. Blackett-Ord wrote me not to send out images of her two watercolors of Rowfant House and RandleHolme. I can e mail her and ask for permission to send those two (I don't know legally if I can send out an image of the British Library's copy of Rowfant House, 1787 because I purchased that copy they sent to me on a disc) if you really want a copy. I might be able to send those in an e mail attachment from my own e mail if she gives permission which may only be for your personal benefit.D. Jones
I hope it gets restored as an english national heritage home its steeped in english history .Ive stayed there in mid 80s it was creepy ,felt a bit haunted.
Omg I went there from a really young age. I grew up there it was like a second home. I’m really sad and heartbroken it’s come to this 😢😢😢. My heritage is Latvian. What happened? Why ?
It was an attempt to disguise where the place was as we wanted to protect it as far as possible.. however in the first few scenes I missed a blatant sign - and so adjusted the title as well as included the history on our Facebook page etc.. it was too late to re-edit the video as it had already got likes and comments... 👍
Elvis Costello wrote "Oliver's Army" in cc1978 on a plane coming back from Belfast. It was the first time he went to the city, he was shocked to see very young soldiers from the British army walking around with loaded machine guns. The song covers Northern Ireland's troubles, the end of the British empire, and life in the army. Also it was after Oliver's career.. But a cool song non the less 👍
