About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
thanks, Glenn! The neck problem has been solved btw ;)
Glad to hear it!!!
Now that was fast :D
And… what exactly did you do? What was the fix? Please elaborate.
Did you move “both” strap buttons? What about that input Jack? (Still working on that fix right?)
Can we get an update on this? Please and thank you?
good news man
oh well, i'm not triggered in any way by this video. But well, I'm Polish :D
The visual effects on the guitar are really cool, but you should stop em when you're starting to do the review. I'd like to see the actual guitar. Cheers mate
no shit
To be fair if a guitar showed that Transformers the movie clip it would be instant bought lol.
maybe that's a secret
I wouldn't be surprised if Glenn were required to not fully reveal the guitar due to some nda-type contract, I dunno, maybe this is a brand new prototype, but judging from the shape, it looks very similar to what they already sell on their website
You can see it at the very end.
The overuse of that cheesey effect on the guitar killed this video..! So bad, it remined me of Homer Simpson making Ned Flanders a dating profile video with tons of "Star Wipes."
It would have been nice to see what the guitar ACTUALLY looked like.
The editor needs to chill
Less is more! All Bass players know this!
I've suggested Ritalin to him several times, but he ignores it!!!!😂😂😂😂
Why? Two seconds from the end he realized that 13 minutes and 20 seconds is the perfect duration for this effect. ;)
Yeah he does
Uhh... How do I activate the guitar screen setting on my guitar? I want to watch anime on my guitar, too. Is this a Ruf guitar exclusive, or can my Ibanez do this?
Anime then Beavis and Butt-Head theme at 2:52, Butt-Head Vegeta approves.
Would’ve been nice to see what the guitar actually looks like
Yes.
13:20
Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. Thst distracting effect on the guitar wears out it's welcome after 10 seconds but is on almost the whole video.
He actually reposted the video without the effect and highlighted your comment! I couldn't agree more. At least Glenn listens to his audience feedback.
I don't understand why we couldn't see the actual finish of the guitar until a half second before the end.
It's a May Fool's joke...
@@Dm3qXY well that's stupid.
@@HabAnagarek i do not disagree
Dude.. why all the cartoons on the guitar?
Why not
@@sog6289 Because we didn't get to see what the guitar actually looks like.
@@GToW-B Probably because it's like the yellow ones? A proper guitar should be black. Lol. All mine are.
@@GToW-B it was blue at the end
@@sog6289 it was also blue during unpacking, but yeah
Would have been nice to see the actual guitar at one point (more than 3 seconds at the end)... I lost interest 3 minutes into the review and fast forward.
Hey I quit dating my cousins a long time ago but I still drive a pick up truck and jam to SLAYER.

But when I read the New Testament where I read "God so loved the world He gave His Son" (Gospel of John) I believe otherwise.

@@rustyshackleford9557 Either you're missing punctuation or I'm missing something else.
so the anime effects affect the tone?
Ya, so I’m the guy who thought that the guitar body actually had some sort of built in screen surface throughout the neck and body that allowed video to be fed into it and displayed. I only realized it was a Glenn editing trick when I went on Ruf website and said, “where’s the screen guitar!?” Yes, I am that gullible, and apparently also that ignorant on the state of the art of tech (but that COULD be possible, right?). I’m kinda confused why he decided to do the visual stuff w/o mentioning it at all in the video, and never actually getting to see real paint job of the guitar being reviewed…
He actually does mention "the blue screen finish" at about 12:42ish, at almost the very end of the video.
I think a guitar could actually be built like that
I assume you mean the old, established brand names of American guitars. There are artisanal builders all over the country
Holy shit a guitar made out of green screen! (On a side note is this making fun of those low attention span videos? If so thats pretty ingenious lmao)
It's actually made out of blue screen if you watch to the end.
@@icebalm Lol I closed the video RIGHT before it showed the wood
I actually want to watch this but the fire/cartoons/whatever instead of actual guitar made it unwatchable for me :/ I hope this will get reuploaded without this, I'm genuinely interested but it makes me dizzy 🤮
Can always listen to it with your phone faced down. This is a review on the guitar’s sound, after all.
Edit: To be clear the sound of the guitar’s clarity (specifically things like lack of feedback, or audible signs of electronic/hardware issues) are the important thing, along with what Glenn says about its feel and tuning stability, and not any slight, arbitrary difference in sound due to slightly different pickup wiring, since humbuckers, while slightly nuanced individually, don’t create a significant sound difference in the context of a full metal mix.
wdym this is fire
@@dogbiscuits752 According to Glenn, guitars don't have a unique sound, lol. Guitar reviews are about look, playability, and tuning stability. Remember, pickups don't matter. Only the speaker matters.
I agree the weird whatever is annoying. I just wanted to see the guitar. Mostly could careless about the tones. But the Finnish, frets, and price is what I want to know. Sorry Glenn but still love the channel!😂
Last 30 seconds shows the Guitar as is . I am more than intrigued.
The intro with the guitar's effects was cool but all I see is you advertising a guitar-shaped green screen the rest of the video
THREE FUCKING GRAND!!!!!! Jesus Glenn. Too bad the colour is so bad you have to hide it. Also don't RUF customise Porsches?
Of course, they do. Poles are good with german stuff. They even put the iron cross on the fretboard on some models
Labor is expensive. $3000 only seems like a lot because we don't get paid enough ourselves. If all of our money wasn't being syphoned to the top and you were actually paid what you were worth, then you'd be able to afford such a guitar, and support good jobs while doing it.
@@MichaelSheaAudio where, in Poland? I think the most expensive part is that "Ruffaine Plain" material. 3k may be a good price for hq acoustic guitar, but it's too much for a windowsill with strings imo.
@@mayak_85 Definitely, the materials are a factor as well. In their own "about us" video on their website, he mentions that they're a new company, and have mechanical and aerospace engineers, as well as guitar techs and luthiers. These are jobs that demand high pay. If they're good at their jobs, then they will need to be paid well and it will add to the cost of the guitars. And a quick Google search shows that Poland has one of the highest minimum wages in Central and Eastern Europe, and another search shows that the cost of living is almost 60% lower than in the United States.
@@MichaelSheaAudio"About us" often is a bunch of nonsense for those who don't know how guitars are built. Mister, I am a qualified woodworker, I play selfmade electrics (acoustic is in building process) and I really can say that building solidbody/chambered guitar is easy. Good paintjob is the most difficult imo. On the second place is binding job. For example, making a table with carved by hand cabrioli legs is much more difficult. On factories lot's of job is done by cnc machines. I agree with you, good job gotta be paid well, cuz getting experience takes lots of time and lots of mistakes done and some materials wasted. But again, making electric guitar doesn't need lots of skills.
You get to see the actual guitar in the very last second of the video
That whole-guitar blue is really sharp! Given the prices I saw online for Ruf's guitars, given the not-so-minor flaws, and given your actual final rating is 3.75/5, I really think the tone of this video would have been much different had you paid for the guitar. I think your review is honest, and I really appreciate that, but the overall excitement and kudos in this vid is why I don't really trust sponsored reviews. I much, much prefer your "I paid for this" reviews (of which there are many, I know), and hope you continue to do more of them!
Would love to see the actual finish on that guitar. Apparently it was greenscreen green.
this channel is nothing but these kind of videos now. no actual substance just creating drama for clicks with an overstated subject matter that is as tired as me having to watch this extra low quality content appear on my feed all the time. this is the definition of the decline in the quality of this kind of "youtuber"
Their prices are a joke. Fuckin guys come out of nowhere with no credentials and decide their product is worth a fortune.
Welp, now I regret defending Glenn against people saying this is a guitar review channel! 😬
As soon as i started watching i heard a giant noise! I jumped, turned around and my kiesel and Gibson were broken on the ground. Damn it glen!
Damn, American guitar builders are definitely finished this time. They've been threatened, doomed, annihilated, obliterated, destroyed, and now crushed all in the last year alone!
I actually though the guitar had some kind of effect on it for a good second
Please stop with the false premise that Gibson represents all guitars from the US. It's pure nonsense and you know it. I checked out Ruf and they seem like they are trying to be Kiesel. Nothing wrong with that. I bet there's room for both builders without all the bashing and false equivalence. FWIW my Carvin from '95 still plays perfectly. Kiesel has only improved their building since then. There are lots of other small US builders and they don't deserve the broad brush you are painting with.
Yep, it’s weird to see stuff like this. Like as if there are no smaller builders in the USA that are comparable in quality and price to a Ruf guitar? Every USA made guitar is a Gibson with a broken headstock, and that’s it. And every guitar made on American soil is made by minimum wage workers with a multimillionaire owner raking in all the money. Every American company is Gibson.
How many times have we heard this same thing a million times!?!?
Exactly
exactly
And hate watchers like me
You just answered your question.
And it’s never true
Do workers in other countries not make significantly less than the people they work for?
Sick guitar though!
They do make significantly less than the company owners, yes, however they, generally speaking, aren’t bombarded by the same amount of propaganda saying everything is fine when it isn’t; if they are getting that propaganda, they most likely aren’t believing it, because they pay more attention to the reality of their situation, unlike terminally online “hustlers”. I definitely hope for more workers around the world get together and demand better pay/benefits/conditions, however the conman mentality that becoming part of the problem is better than fixing it is at an all time high, especially here in North America.
Depends on the country and company. A big corp will be a big corp anywhere, but sometimes you have factory works with shares in the company they build for, so if the brand is doing well they are doing well.
@@dogbiscuits752 America is the worst first world country to live and work in at this point.
@@ashleyjohansson230😂😂 right because everyone is trying to get out of here instead of get in. Live a few more decades before you spout off nonsense.
@@Riverking1 Another complacent American who ignores all the problems and thinks everything is perfectly fine 🤭
Jesus Christ Glenn, can we get a re-edit without all the green screen shite? I'd actually like to see what the guitar looks like because the only one I can see on the website is bright yellow or some godawful leopard cloth thing.
Edit: The actual colour is at 13:20. That looks fucking disgusting. While I'm sure these are good guitars, the neck finish looks sticky and uncomfortable on the gloss models and I'm not dropping £3k on a Polish brand with no track record. There's absolutely no justifying that cost, even taken without comparing to other brands.
When we're looking for cleans we want to hear the likes of The Call Of Ktulu, One and something more modern like the cleans in Drain of Incarnation by Archspire. Metal cleans, not some country twang. Heck, even Slayer have cleans in Seasons In The Abyss, Spill The Blood and 213!
Edit: overall I love the review of the guitar especially the strap positioning and what it's like to play standing up and sitting down - the first things I look for in a guitar if deciding whether to buy or not. I wouldn't because of the neck dive and jack position but, other than that, it looks like a great guitar.
I have this feeling that you're catfishing for comments for your next "Viewer comment" tirade. After scrolling and reading a few...I'd say mission accomplished.
Love how you mock clean tone when pretty much every band uses it at some point. People playing 100% metal all the time won't be able to jam outside their circle. Playing just one genre must get extremely boring.
I love your videos Glenn - but it seems like most of them are just ads....
I understand you have bills to pay. I do wish you success, I just hope for some more original videos again. Love the comedy, editing, and education.
Stay well-
Peace ✌️
clean tones... well, it was a grand idea in the past, now every guitar maker and the big ol bag o dicks down the road with a brand new chisel shields them far better than anything up to the 90's, still useful to know if it's a noisy pos. like, does it need a noise gate to merely be listenable? just holding it up and recording the speaker should give the right amount of indication if it sucks.
People are gonna be so mad when they get a guitar that isn't also a tv
I'm sure RUF will be thrilled with the (unnecessary) VFX on their product, so you can't properly see what the finish looks like. It would have been fine for about 30 seconds, but not for the whole video.
The visual effects on the guitar were great at the start, but after the "flame" overlay it should have ended. It kinda made the video hard to watch. OTOH, there may be a reason for this that we are not privy to so I will just move on.
As much as I loved all the fun 1st gen Transformers footage and all the other graphics cast upon the instrument, it would've been great to actually see the "flawless finish". Other than that, cool demo.
Good Lord the blue screen effect on the guitar was fine for a little extra but lose it when your reviewing the finish. It's too much for the entire video. We'd really appreciate seeing the real guitar. Just ugh too much
They seem fine, but the prices are eye watering! At $3k, they're competing with fully custom luthier built here (UK). So it'd be a no for me at this point.
Yeah, the visual effect on the guitar was cool for the first 30 second. Then it just became an annoying distraction. You get to see it's real colour and the cut, at the last couple second of the video.
Dude, we get it. You hate US guitars and the actual people who make them. There are a shit-ton of great luthiers in this country, whether you believe it or not.
I agree with other comments, i enjoyed the video but would prefer if the graphics could stop eventually - I’d like to see the instrument
I don't know about the ruffaine but the richlite should be a thing in most fretboards, instead of that dry light brown pau ferro or laurel that looks like sheeat.
OMG Glen this is amazing levels of trolling even for you. bravooooo. i can't wait for the follow up video, you made my day man.
Just to say that I subbed, your channel is cool and funny and informative, good work! :D
Man I watched you for awhile ,. But this constant shit on America is kinda getting old . Nice Solar rip off guitar tho…💪🏼
Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhh...Ruf is just as expensive as American brands. I don't see them Crushing them any time soon. I love the look of their guitars, the fact they use a composite is really cool, but I'm not paying $3199 on just the guitar just to look cool. 🤷
Poland? Wow! They are not cheap, I see prices in the $1700+ range, buuuuut...the sustain is really good, and the build quality looks/sounds good so far...but that neck dive jeeez
Begs to ask the question: Does it really matter how the guitar looks or is it the sound of the instrument? Guitarrists hear with their eyes.
We need actual numbers Glenn. How low is the no buzz low action? I'm a low action junkie and I need to know.
It would've been nice to actually see the guitar. I usually enjoy your videos, couldn't get through this one.
I like the effects on the guitar. But gotta wonder why you never turned them off and let us see the actual guitar in a review.
Love the video overlays on the guitar but can you actually show us what the guitar looks like?
Glenn's titles be like "this guitar will crush the American infidels mashallah!"
didnt you make the same video a few weeks ago? with the schecter? or something whatever lol same shit
Yeah, kinda cool video, but... CAN WE PLEASE SEE THE ACTUAL GUITAR?!!
That blue screen effect was ok for the first 10 seconds or so but after that it was annoying as fuck.
Perfect. Tone composite, that will give tone wood a run for its money.
the blue screen finish is pretty cool, but the graphics all video were a bit much.
Nah, made it to 5:50 and gave up because of that 'kin overlay, nippy as F.
At least cut off the chroma key when showing off the fucking SPECS GLENN!!!
Fuck everyone else, I think the blue screen is hilarious. 😂
It would be great to see what the fucking guitar looks like.
Shut up Glenn. I'm trying to watch gundam 😂.
I'm from Poland and i didn't know this company at all. I'm happy they send you guitars for review. Looks like they are build very solid, but way to expensive for me. I love your honest reviews, and your tip about using Pultec EQ from Ignite Amps was a game changer for me. Thank You for sharing so much useful knowledge for free.
P.S. I was in Canada in 2002 in Toronto for two weeks during summer and to this day i love Canada, i hope one day i will be able to visit it one more time 🙂
2 seconds (literally two) in and the WARNING at the beginning is PERFECT.
13:20 if you want to see the guitar's paint
And i actually love dimarzio's lol
dam it bobby, youre hot boxing it. 🍻
I love the fact that you are so encouraging with this new company: that's what a company dealing with quality products needs desperatly
This video nearly gave me a seizure
You should stop reviewing guitars. Every review is so predictably formulaic at this point that you have to use a methhead editor to bring any excitement back. The playing is bad, the tones are bad, the claims are always the same (America sucks, everyone else does it better), and it just kind of reeks of boredom and laziness.
The effect on the guitar is pretty cool. But I have no idea what it looks like.
yup too expensive -_- and im not impressed with it at all if it was 1k maybe i would try it
I wonder what it looks like
Clean Tones are used by almost every metal band someplace, at some point. The fact that you won't even tackle learning a good clean tone speaks volumes about your abilities as an "engineer."
I clicked for the guitar, and stayed to watch a full Transformers episode on it.
- Hey Joe what do you think of this guitar?
- I don't know I kinda feel like watching The Transformers.
I've got a custom built Jazzmaster I'm currently paying on. Just under $1100 US. The guy who built it does a lot of cutsom builds that end up in this particular store all the time. By the worksmanship, he really seems to care about the little details. The only piece of wood he didn't build was the neck. He got a made in mexico fender neck for $300. The fender USA Necks cost $500.
I'm getting a drop dead sexy one of one for roughly half the price of a new gibson. I'd say the real prize is finding a truly passionate builder who cares about what they're making
At this point Glenn is just trolling all the 'Made in US or bust-heads' and I love it 😂
The bosses overseas are making 10000 times their employees lmao
Thanks for the review.
While I can’t speak to the fellow Dad rockers out there, I’ll have to stick with my $2000 Heritage H150 (Les Paul) rather than shell out the cash for a $3100 Ruf guitar. But that’s just me.
Let me explain:
Being a dad rocker some of the features that are important to us old dudes is the neck size and shape. Too thin of a neck combined with the flat fretboard radius makes these arthritic hands sore thinking about it.
I have to use the chunkier necks to fit my hands and bigger body guitars to attempt to hide my Dad-bod gut.
Lover your show, keep on shredding out the videos!
Glenn and the hydraulic press channel?? Dreams do come true!!! 😀
to be fair V is tricky guitar to build. especially for their first v shape
Where are all the great, competitively priced Canadian made guitars Glen?
Charbonneau and Vicious, both of which have been featured on the show numerous times? Maybe try paying attention!
Godin makes solid axes as well.
$1500-$2500 doesn't really meet my personal criteria of "competitively priced".
Sounds like those makers might be in trouble too.
3K.....No Thanks. After ACTUALLY seeing the , "Blue Screen Finish" ...Didn't care for it..
A guitar I can watch 80s cartoons on!? SOLD!!
Just kidding, it's 1700 dollars and it has multiple design flaws that prevent it from being played comfortably.
Love the Cheech and Chong reference.!
Glenn, no "YOU GOT THE TOUCH! .....You got the POWERRRRRRRRR" yeay. .....After all is said and done ...(something something, bla bla bla bla, YOU"RE A WINNER! You're NOBODY"S FOOL!" ...(??)
Now that we have a video with the fx turned off, this video is amazing XD. Great work Glen! and as always FUCK YOU GLEN!!! XD even if that is... getting like Primus SUCKS ... awesome but been around.
Hey Glenn, big fan of the channel. I would like your opinion on replacing speakers and wattage. "Is there a rule of thumb for matching speakers with amps as far as wattage is concerned?"
I have read on Sweetwater "In general, you can never have too much power. What will actually damage speakers is too LITTLE power! Clipped waveforms will pop tweeters and overheat woofers far faster than over-powering them. The idea is to always provide clean power to the speakers, by using a large enough power amp.
As a very vague rule of thumb, we normally recommend around twice as much amplifier power as speaker’s power rating. For example, if a speaker is rated at 200 watts, we’d use a 400 watt amp. Again, the idea is to have enough clean power to handle whatever you throw at the amp without clipping.
Now, this doesn’t mean that because you have a more powerful amplifier, you should turn up the volume up that much higher! Rather, the extra power is to be kept in reserve so the amp can deal with peaks and transients without clipping."
What's your opinion on this Glenn? Keep up the great work!!!
Dude. What the hell is even that? Even if I wanted to buy a $3k guitar that you "can't play sitting OR standing," which I don't, I don't even know wtf it looks like. I don't even know what the FRETBOARD looks like. I get that farting around with editing software can be fun, but could we at least have seen it during the bench section? I'm honestly shocked that you would upload something like this, as I've been watching you make quality content for a long, long time. I don't even get mad when you call us bass players mentally deficient, knuckle dragging mistakes of nature....so please don't assault my eyes like that again. That was bad. Seriously bad.
Another amazing instrument from Ruf!! GLENN, please, that has a coil SPLIT, not a coil tap!! A coil tap requires a second positive, which is pulled out midway through the winding process. Nevertheless, a supremely outstanding instrument. It should be noted that Chuck Schuldiner used the X2N. I look forward to Friday's episode.
In 1959, a Gibson Les Paul Standard cost $265. Adjusted for inflation, that’s $2,844.26 in 2024. Which is almost exactly what they cost today. In 1951, a Fender Telecaster cost $189.50. Adjusted for inflation that’s $2,276.54. Which is almost exactly what an “American Ultra” Telecaster costs today.
If they’re “overpriced” today, then they always have been. And yet they continue to dominate guitar sales.
Just some context for people who think this amateur con artist actually tells you anything real. Ask him how much he gets paid to advertise junk to you. And ask him what he’s ever done that qualifies him to pose as an “expert”. He can’t play guitar, and he’s done a few super amateur metal gigs as an engineer. He made corporate videos for a living, and now he makes RUclips videos. He’s a total fraud, who just trolls for views, and to vent his spite over being a complete failure in everything else he’s done. He’s selling you garbage, and lying to you to do it.
But hey, America sucks, and you should buy stuff that’s cheap because it was made by prisoners in the paradise of a communist gulag. 🤪
Cool, try listing it on sale and see if it works out. That's an expensive guitar with no resale.
I have 4 Gibsons (2LP & 2V) and none of them cost 1/2 what these would be (max $1300CDN) but would be worth more than the Ruf on resale, probably.
I would own one of these, being a slave to the v shape, primarily because Vs are great live guitars: great balance, weight and fret access. (Oh wait, the Ruf is neck heavy?) That said, these are obviously great guitars.
BTW: American Made GMP Guitars sez "Hold my Beer!!"
Quick question:
Do you ever talk about volume and tone knobs & capacitors in your reviews? Small things like the pots and caps that make a giant difference on a guitar.
Sometimes, I hear people say they hate their pickups.
Sometimes, I would wager they have 250 B pots. Changing them to 500 A pots make all the difference. Hell, even 250 A pots would be better if you still like a darker tone than one with more brilliance.
A love letter to all guitarists from someone who works with guitars at a Canadian pawnstore, PLZ read up on pots and caps before bashing the tone of your pickups! ❤
