Normally I watch/listen to the entire video and then decide if I thumbs up or not. With Delos videos I don't bother. I open the video and click the thumbs up before it starts since I know before hand that I will love it!!! Stay strong guys, fair winds and following seas.

I have given and received many sea-going safety briefs ; this one is without doubt the fullest and best explained I have ever heard. I might have included pressing the MOB button on the sat nav to give you a starting datum for a search pattern just in case someone went O/B without their PFD. The Williamson turn is also a handy thing to know about, to bring the vessel back along its track as efficiently as possible . The MERSAR manual contains good advice on search patterns, should you be searching for someone from another vessel.

Just had are extinguishers serviced in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, dry powder are being phased out because of the risk to Asthma sufferers, COPD etc.
Remember also if using a Co2 extinguisher 🧯 the Oxygen that is starved unless the fire is completely out Oxygen rushes back to replace Co2 and can reignite said fire.
So Foam is now the preferred choice.
Really interesting and informative safety brief. 👍

Just a excellent thing to do, and a lifesaver, as instead of panic, there is a plan of action, and while you always think there won't be an 'O-Sh*t' moment, it does happen, and it's better to be prepared than lucky. This is a extension of the excellent dry bag kits Blue did, and this should be a blueprint for all blue water cruisers.

Brady, you may want to consider a waterproof hand held VHF preset to Ch 16 for the watch standers. The radio needs to be on a lanyard, so they are not lost in a seaway but pocketed, clipped, belted, or otherwise fastened to the person in a way that allows one to function without it being an annoyance. The advantage in recovering is that the person in the water can guide the boat back for the recovery which is lot easier than keeping track of a head in breaking waves and has a much greater chance of success at night or in a seaway. The best is if everyone is equipped with one. There are few things more depressing than watching a stern light growing dimmer from a moonlit wake.

One thing I'd like to point out regarding fire extinguishers - they should be shaken on a monthly basis. If the powder is not moving from the base of the fire extinguisher, you can use a rubber mallet to pound on the base of the extinguisher to break up the power. When turning it upside down you should feel the powder freely moving. It takes about 3 months for a freshly charged extinguisher to solidify to the point where you need the mallet to break it up again(3 months of not agitating the powder)

    Great safety briefing Cpt. Brady!
I know it's a downer, but now would be an excellent time for some training.
“In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.”
Many people panic in such stressful and often horryfying situations and forget stuff if they didn't do their drills properly. Just imagine some scenarios like rough weather at night and your engine compartment starts filling up everything inside the boat with smoke all of a sudden.
Please make sure to do some fire/MOB/breach/radio drills every now and then so you really are as ready as possible. There is a reason emergency responders, soldiers and other 'professionals' always put huge efforts in repeating and exercising the basics!
P.S.: I also recommend using a fire extinguisher under safe conditions on shore some day. This will let you know that fire is not as easily to put out as it's shown in the movies.
You've got roughly 10 (probably less) seconds of foam/powder/fluid in the container whilst trying to hit that hot scary smoking thing that triggers your most primal fears and was not on your boat 20 seconds earlier. It's terryfying, but again: exercise can make you a bit more ready.
Highly enjoying your journeys and techincal stuff. Stay safe guys! :)

When I was attending school I use to do an activity afternoon on sailing once a week. although it was great fun we had to learn about safety if fallen overboard, one thing has always stuck out in my mind which was if gone overboard without a life jacket we were told to remove your trousers and to tie a knot in both legs of your trousers demins or even normal material trousers ( pants ) and once done scoop and trap air in them and it will help to keep you afloat, did try it once and it does work, ok one may have to from time to time keep repeating process of refilling with air but it does help and if nothing else does give you a feeling of security, ok one cant pull the heck out of it with all their weight on it pulling it underwater but as said it is a help and sense of security to help keep one calm.

    • @mikebarron5805
      @mikebarron5805 4 года назад

@robert anderson That's from chapter one or two of any Basic Open Water Survival course. If you find yourself overboard without a life jacket it may be your best option. It's still more complicated than it sounds.
Even the most basic lifesaving skills should be practiced in supervised and controlled situations "before" you need them to save your life.
Life saving suggestion. Do Not jump into the deep end of the family pool fully dressed without a well trained lifeguard standing by. You may need their help before you ever get air in those pants.

Very informative video! I sail on Lakes in my 20 footer and am usually singe handed so many of the safety procedures mentioned don't fit. As in, I can swim a mile to the closest shore line if I fell overboard. During the nicer months there are usually a good number of power boats around who I could hail for help. I've also got a hand held marine VHF radio which should reach help if need be.
Now, if I ever get a larger boat and start blue water sailing (and get one or more crew members) the all-out safety procedures will be top of the list. A video like this makes me think about the safety options I have right now. And that's important to consider. Scott W

Rehearsals? Briefings are good, rehearsing is great. Chances are the new crew members wouldn't really know how to use the radios in a panic environment. Saying to take a few moments to collect your thoughts is excellent advice. Great video overall though.

I have a safety story re Sh-t Happens - was leaning on the pulpit rail steering with the tiller tilted back in an 10 knot rip in a passage between islands heading out to sea - pulpit rail collapsed and I landed in the water - no life vest - wife down below cannot hear me shouting. Grabbed the dinghy motor shaft - cut me to pieces but wife came up and let sails go just in time. Sh - t happens lesson is: use lifevest and tether going offshore.

I suggest you take a picture of the wall of pictures, just in case something terrible happens to the boat, if you lost all those memories you wouldn't be to happy! (store the photo online) :)

    Hey Delos Crew,
Would it be worth grabbing a dive tank and gear or two to throw in the dinghy as well if you had time in the event of having to abandon ship?
Seeing as you store them on the aft deck, they would be pretty easy to get at.
Could have floats attached to a couple so they can be cut loose and will float to be scooped up when able if you cant carry them right away to escape.
Could also be worth keeping one or a few actually stored in and attached to the dhingy as well when sailing so they are already there.
Might be useful to allow you to dive back to the boat if it sank in water shallow enough, or was submerged but still at the surface, and you wanted to go back in to get something like Canned Foods or other supplies to hold over for longer after the initial escape to safety.
Another thing, you mentioned take the dhingy if you can, well it may be worth fitting an Alternator to the Outboard, and a battery to the dhingy.
Gives you another small source of power to run a radio or charge something if needed.
a Small Lifepo4 Battery (eg 40AH) would be suitable for that.
