I spent 72 hrs in a raft and you cannot have too much of anything. So thankful for a wetsuit that was left in the raft/dingy by accident. You all are special souls, be spatially aware. P.S. signal mirror{no batteries required} saved my butt in Viet Nam.

As someone who uses Sam splints regularly (Paramedic), I recommend you tape a 4 inch ace bandage with a roll of tape that will stick under water to it. The Sam splint is used to splint a broken extremity and keeping it in place when movement causes severe pain, is a top priority. Also, remember to immobilize the joint above and below to fracture with the splint.
Also, it might be hove you to place the flairs and some of the water in along with the lower priority bags in the event that the primary "find us kit" is lost in the ditching, that whole, not keeping all your eggs in one basket thing.

I recall Cap'n Bree-yawn saying something about not abandoning the boat until the absolute last moment and even then to tether to it unless its going to bottom to be sure you are a easier search target if out at sea. Sage words.

Water is the most critical item to phyiscal survival, I would have a hand operated watermaker in the raft kit of kit #1. Expensive but they work. Second option, 5 gallon water jugs on deck (or secured & stored in your dinghy) 2/3rds full so thay will float which gives you options to get them in the raft and or dingy when they are tossed into the water. A full container of water thrown into the water will sink so unless it starts out in the liferaft and consequently ends up in the water, you're SOL. You should also show how you secure & stow all these supplies & equipment. Inside? Outside? If you take a roll, capsize from a heavy wave washing over the boat or pitchpole, deck attached supplies will most likely be lost unless very cleverly secured. Your viewers would probably find it fascinating to understand & see the priorities of a true abandon ship drill, where do you have the plan posted in writing (if the captain in injured/incapacitated, will the crew know what to do & in what order to do it, etc) what is first in order of importance (donning of lifejackets for example), 2nd 3rd, etc. And of course, who grabs the rum....All of this would make a great video IMO.

Completely agree ... Katadyn Survivor 6, or something like that, is so much better than water jugs / bladder or a solar still, yes it is expensive, but it fits in the ditch bag (less things to remember the better), and makes a liter of water an hour (even in the rain and storms where there is no sun for a solar still)

Sorry... long post covering some of my thoughts about items for ditch kits.
An old sailor friend of mine once told me that in the old days you had to plan to be adrift for 30 days or more, but with modern electronics one should still plan 10 days or more before rescue. Even though they know exactly where you are at, they still have to get to you when you are in the middle of nowhere. He also taught me to value redundancy of life support.
You have what I consider to be an excellent start for building a ditch kit. I did not notice you mention light sticks, but they have a good shelf life, and are a good source of light and emergency signaling. I was taught to always have at no less than a dozen red and a dozen or so green the green is used to provide interior light in a life raft while the red are used for signaling. You can attach one to the kite mentioned below, or you can attach one to a string and spin it to make a red dot for aircraft to spot. (and when the light sticks are nearing the end of their shelf life, use them as light sources on night or penetration dives and restock the ditch kit with fresh) (a friend of mine uses them like nav lights when night diving so one can tell where a dive partner is and what direction they are facing. I think this is only good for shallower dives before they reach crush depth... personally I am more partial to the idea of using some colored LED dive lights I have) expired or near expired light sticks can also be used at some impromptu beach raves
I do not have a boat yet, but I have been doing research and making plans for some time. One of the items on my list is a parafoil kite with an ultralight radar reflector. Fly the kite day or night with the radar reflector and a light stick on the kite line and it makes you very visible. I do not remember where I saw the idea, but IMO it was bloody brilliant.
additionally at very least space blankets for every crew member I personally am partial to the space blanket sleeping bags that are red outside silver inside simply because they are heavier and more durable... but if you ditch, hypothermia becomes a very real possibility even in warmer waters.
A hand pump water maker is IMO darn near essential. It is pricey, but so worth it if you need it. IMO solar stills are too inefficient... they are way over priced and barely (under ideal conditions) produce enough for one person.
I like that you are adding rashguards to your kit... I have to admit... I had overlooked this idea... I am adding them to my own list. I am disappointed that I had overlooked them and polarized sunglasses
A manual bailer pump (such as the gray tire pump style) is a good idea to have... likewise a sponge. You are unlikely to sink a life raft by flooding it, but a pump and sponge will be a great help if the life raft gets swamped by a wave. Pump out the bulk of it, and sponge out the rest. If you feel the pump is overkill, at least something to scoop out water then the sponge to mop up what is left.
Water rescue gear... Especially a throw bag should find it's way into the life raft if you have to ditch (not a bad idea to attach one to the ditch bag. if a ditch happens in rough weather it can make it easier assisting crew members in reaching the raft.
On the topic of cordage attached to the ditch kit. A small pouch packed like a throw bag with light weight cordage such as paracord can be used to tie the life raft off to the rails to a: keep the life raft from straying to far before crew are on the raft, and b: keep raft and boat close together til the last moment as a 54' ketch is far easier to spot than a small life raft.
On a fairly related topic, you once showed us how you train new crew in MOB drills, but I do not recall ever seeing a Delos abandon ship drill. I figure you already do have some form of abandon ship drill, but you CAN use maggy to represent the life raft and run abandon ship drills. While drifting or anchored, signal the start of the drill, and run your ditch plan til everyone is in maggy in their class 1 PFD along with the ditch bags and any other grab and go gear.
I do not have my notes at hand... this is just what I could think of off the top of my head... I look forward to seeing the discussion on the topic and seeing just how many new ideas I see for my own kit.

Genius move on the rash guards and sunnies. I've done my own "ditch kit" (for evacuation - I live no where near the ocean) and added playing cards and a magnetic chess board. In situation like that, having entertainment to keep your mind occupied is critical. 10% of survival is planning, 15% good decision making, and 75% waiting to be rescued.

Really great episode, as usual, but Cannot understate how important this is, most don't plan for that 'what if' situations well enough, and please people, even if you're going to a remote area on land, be prepared. Some additional adds, thin plastic almost like tarp material, don't care if it's just a roll of visqueen or individual 'survival' sheets, can direct water off you/catch rainwater, keep you warm, and some heavy duty garbage bags..once adventuring out me and 2 friends were caught out in a emergency situation out in no wheres ville yrs. back, and I was in my usual warm weather gear of shorts, a 'T' and sandals, and of course it stormed, cold rain and such, and I actually crawled into a unused garbage bag to stay warm(nights had been 80F)that night of the storm it got down in the low 60's ;) and a guy emptied another during the night and did the same, The other person was dressed warmly..but wished they had 1 :/
Also EPirbs fail, doesn't happen often, but it has, and being prepared to spend some time before being found is the difference between heartbreak or not.

Any plan beats no plan at all.
    Practice actually abandoning ship.
I spent 4 years on active duty and
6 years in our state guard in a
    senior position.
I once bragged of having two weeks of
MREs in the trunk of my car with my
go bag in case we were deployed. I
lost a bet with a junior NCO who had
recently been to the big sandbox.
(I am an old Vietnam veteran.)
He said MREs go bad, I did not believe it.
We cut open some cheese spread stuff and
    it was seriously rotten!
Make sure your food is not rotten.
If canned goods are in your emergency food
paper labels will come off when wet.
Write on the cans w/magic marker.
Include can openers. Good idea for each of you to
    carry a p-38 (That's a small folding can opener
to you civilians. They are under 2 inches long,
    weigh practically nothing.
Hope this helps if you ever need to use it; AND
hope you never need to use it in the real world.
Best emergency plan is to THINK and
avoid getting into an emergency situation.

I call mine the oh shit bag and I've had to use it. I was delivering a 5 year old 60 Hatteras sport fishermen that was in mint shape. But there was a problem with stray current from a problem at the marina that caused a seacock to fail. We were running outside trying to get into Cape May NJ before the weather and didn't make it. The only warning we had was the boat started losing speed from the weight of the water. The high water alarm didn't go off because of way we had the boat trimmed and it only sounded after coming off of plane. I force the size of the through hull, but it was around 4-6 inches and we didn't have a bung close enough to try and to be honest it was a massive jet of water with a lot of pressure. Thankfully I always bring my own ditch bag and everyone that does deliveries or spends time on strange boats should do the same. Also don't toss expired flares because if properly stored they'll be fine and when you're sitting in the raft you'll be thankful for the extras. Generally I'll fire the oldest ones first saving the best for when I here a chopper/plane or another boat. Granted EPIRB''s etc are a lot better than they were then. But electronics are not a replacement for things like flares, signal mirror and a good ole whistle.
One last but is on my boat I've got a primary kit in the cockpit ready to go in second. But I also have a secondary general emergency bag below deck that's more extensive and thought to be overkill by many. But its got more uses than just a ditch bag. I'll bring it along for dinghy excursions,to help other boaters with problems etc. So by using it often there's no problem with things like food going bad.

We had a pretty good ditch kit when we cruised and a few things that went in:
A hand held GPS and a VHF with spare batteries - a deck of cards - copies of our passports, boat docs, bank docs and a credit card - sponges - salt water blister cream or NIVEA - a large bottle of multi-vitamins - extra swim shorts - GRAVOL or Dramamine - a 6ft wide sea anchor - hats - two cheap inflatable float mats (to keep you up off the wet liferaft floor)- notepad and pens - a pee jug - baby wipes
This was in addition to water/medical/food/flares and all went into two large SeaLine bags with good straps. Each bag had a 6ft lead with a carabiner. The plan was to deploy the raft TIE OFF THE RAFT OR IT WILL BLOW AWAY and hook the carabiners to the life raft lead. Enter the life raft and retrieve the ditch bags.
So glad to never use the kit.

Good ditch kit. Adrenaline causes much thirst, so water is critical. A crew member plus an alternate crew member should be assigned to each grab bag duty in case the primary one cannot perform that duty. Fire, flooding, structural failure may prohibit access to a grab bag and exit access. location of grab bags should be considered for alternate plans if the emergency precludes pre planned action. Pre planned action rarely survives first contact. ( yes I know that is often in military contact but just saying). With EPERB etc. and coms these days rescue is almost quickly guaranteed. Injury stabilization and care is most likely the biggest concern prior to rescue. Much love and respect to you all. Best wishes always and thank you for sharing your life story, a steadfast follower from Georgia USA. 👍🇺🇸

Wonderful video, I love the safety series. I have a few thoughts. First, the large water bag worries me, in that I think 2 20 liter bags are safer. than 1 40, because the likelihood of 2 bags failing or being lost is much less than one bag failing. Formally, this principle is a feature of spreading the risk theory, which applies in everything from ecology and evolution (which I teach) to financial planning. Second, I recall that in the survival situation described in Survive the Savage Sea, one of the children was rehydrated with an improvised enema setup. An enema also can be used to rehydrate an adult with severe nausea - not just a survival kit issue but a consideration for your med kit given that severe rehydration is a killer with various diseases, many of which you might encounter. Anyway, great work, and a special well done Blue.

You should be able to make your own solar still. The concept is not difficult to knock something up. All you need is something that floats that will capture the condensate in a ring around the central sea water bath, then a plastic tent over the top that will feed into the fresh water bath.

Great video as usual! Just a tip for you and others. If you're carrying sutures, see if you can get a doc to write you a script for 2% lidocaine with epinephrine. The lidocaine with numb and the epi will stop the bleeding immediately at the wound so that you can have a better view to stitch.

You've got a lot of the essentials covered off so good choices so far but a few comments...
    - In the confusion & panic of an actual ditch there is a good chance that not all 3 bags would be grabbed so you might want to have a little bit of everything in each. I agree that you can't carry 3x Epirb or 3x Full med kits but it would be horrific if you ended up in a life raft with sunglasses, rashies, water but no flares or mirror...that kinda thing...
    - Bringing along a Portable Waterproof VHF would be VERY useful and/or a sat phone.
    - You might also want to consider a face mask (diving...not bank robbery or Halloween), a collapsible bucket
    - Finally, in your med kit I would seriously add seasickness meds. You know that the inside of one of those rafts, in a storm, with people freaked and the thing lurching...people will get seasick

Just thinking about having to abandon ship is not the happiest thing to think about. But if you have things planned out then if you need to leave a sinking boat you know you are prepared for the worst. Since I could probably swim to the shore of the lakes I sail on then I don't have to worry about a ditch kit. But someday I may buy a bigger boat, so it's good to know about these things. In the mean time I certainly hope you don't need your ditch kit!

Don't forget the washing machine.... the only thing they need is the EPIRB, and way to make water via hand desalinating handpump(they do not have) and maybe a burnkit and maybe a fish hook and line+ hand reel.

    • @lawrencegreenwood4002
      @lawrencegreenwood4002 4 года назад +8

@@w8stral I think a VHF is a pretty reasonable suggestion. Most ocean going boats have them as a backup for their on board systems. Agree about the desalinator.

    • @w8stral
      @w8stral 4 года назад +1

@@lawrencegreenwood4002 My only problem with the VHF is range. Who are you going to talk to? Unless international standards change for an emergency power level MUCH higher than standard VHF use in the bands allocated, this is a joke. Lets assume, you get in touch with a boat over the horizon(doubtful), unless you can give GPS coordinates, they will not find you. Of course with the advent of everyone running around with autohelms, etc, flares in the modern world are near useless if you had to ask me and more of a fire hazard than anything else.
A Garmin GPS sat phone on the other hand... Should be #1 on list before EPIRB and #2 should be hand pump desalinator and #3 is burn kit as the highest probably reason to abandon your boat is due to fire followed by a broken valve/pipe etc, but those can usually be fixed/mitigated in place till you get to a harbor. #4... EPIRB

If you're on watch in my boat, you have a waterproof VHF on your person, and are responsible for bringing it with you into the life raft. We keep spare batteries in our grab bag. Why?
      In emergency situations:
      1. Hailing ships should your flares be wet, used or not on board.
      2. Communicating with aircraft involved with recon.
      3. Communicating with rescue helicopters to prep crew for extraction or medical information.
      4. Fantastic backup if your boat's electrical system fails and the on board VHF is not supplied with 12v.
In non emergency situations they're endlessly useful. Shore to ship communication when a party goes on board. Taking with you in the dinghy to radio people if you're in trouble. On a calm day you're not taking an EPIRB with you, but you'd take a radio.

    Hey Delos!
Just be careful with carrying all those flares as I;'m assuming some may be out of date and some insurance company have fine print that states they will not insure a boat with out of date flares in case they go off! Also check your rigging is insured while your sailing as we were recently told we MUST replace our rig to ensure the rig was insured when sailing otherwise it was to be done at our own risk!

I was about to suggest a heliograph but I see you have one. I'd suggest also anti-seasickness pills....The motion of a liferaft is different to a sailboat and up chucking, besides unsavoury for others in the raft, is a quick route to dehydration and weakness. The rations can last a long time after expiration if they are dry....They are simple glucose cakes with not a lot else....not great eating but better than nothing. Rainwater catchment works, as do handpowered RO units. Can openers, lighter or waterproof matches...you guys have a very decent kit there. We'll done. I inspect and service lifeboats for a living and am usually shocked at how little sailboats carry outside of whatever is in the liferaft. You guys have done a great job.

You could make a solar still with what you already have there and by adding one metal bowl/tray. Take the orange box fill 1/3 full with salt water, place bowl/tray floating in the center. Drape emergency blanket over the top, pour a small amount of salt water on top of the blanket so it pools to a point in the center and close the lid. Place in the sun and paint black for best results

I'd say buy the solar still. If you have to ditch you can deploy the still while you still have 40 liters to drink while the still does it's thing in the background. If you run out of your primary supply of water before rescue comes then at least you'll have something to drink. It might not be much, but it might be enough to save your lives.

A solar still can be made with one if your hard plastic water jugs. You guys missed one very important device. A kite! Specifically a small traction parafoil kite that is britely colored and gives the ability for long distance signaling and sail power. This has saved several sailors because they used the kite to sail liferaft acrossed an ocean when wrecked out of reach. Gives the ability to save yourself vs floating with currents. Also a device for celestial navigation and maps are important too!

Add lanyards to survival gear so it doesn’t sink and/or partially filled water containers that will float with survival lanyards attached. Also suggest book, How to survive on land and sea, by Frank C. Craighead, Jr. & John J. Craighead. Years ago on one of my boats we named the ditch bag (a duffle bag) after my ex wife and, when stopped on high seas by Coast Guard, when asked about the bag, my partner said it was Bonnie and really ruined the Coasties day! They couldn’t wait to get back to their cruiser!

If you liked Adrift make sure to also read "Survive the Savage Sea" by Dougal Robinson. Also supposedly you can drink sea water if you drink it extremely slowly. Like a few tiny sips throughout the day. (Someone proved this, forget his name. Not 100% sure on the details don't take my word for it I'm a random guy on the internet. But people also say to catch fish and get water that way too. Also been told to have a waterproof handheld VHF in the raft or even better part of your life jacket or other clothing you would have during rough conditions or emergency.

Those wind up flashlights often have a chemical battery in them. Even if you don't use it, it will degrade over time. So you would either want to carry a spare battery and a screwdriver or preventative replace it every year or so. My crappy cheap one (at home, so not really crucial) has a button cell in it. The cell is dead and now it only lights while you actually crank it, it doesn't hold a charge at all.

I can't believe you got all that stuff in those 3 storage containers. I'd throw in some serious pain killers in case of major injury or shark bite. Also, you'd think someone has already come up with a temporary personal compact portable distillation/reverse osmosis system that is small enough to throw in your ditch bag, that could produce 5-10 liters of water per day, that is reasonably priced.
