Life on the OPEN OCEAN! What's it really like? Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 248

  • Ever wondered what a typical day on a two week open ocean passage is like? It varies depending on the boat, the crew and the ocean but there is definitely a couple common themes that weave their way into all of our long distance sails. Having the chance to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature is a highlight, as well as spending our days exactly as we'd like whether it's snoozing , reading, or fishing. And of course, we all love those days when conditions pick up a bit and allow Delos to shine with some badass sailing 😁 We had fun filming this episode from the first person point of view & hope you guys enjoy the switch up! Much love, B&B

Loved the way Blue went from engines to sailing. No fuss or panic and then hey who needs the auto pilot or to even hang onto the wheel. Very impressive. And then we got to sit through Brady teaching Ruben the feel of the boat while blowing Force seven. I haven't seen that much detail shown on any other video. Yup. I'll be back next week.

As I catch up on the Atlantic crossing, I am SO impressed by Brady's ability to troubleshoot and fix things!! Brian is normally on camera fixing everything so it's way cool to see Brady rockin' it on his own!! So proud!! And Blue has become an amazing sailor too!! Her skills at switching from motoring to sailing on her own is very impressive!!

I love that your cameras and lenses are finally getting to capture the night sky out on passage! I think, being a natural night owl and enjoying that sense of quiet and peaceful solitude myself I would love doing the night watches…just staring at the moon, the stars and the Milky Way all night long!

I wondered if Brady was having the thoughts this stint as Captain is bringing about his own boat. I think it is only a natural progression in life that is calling you. You certainly have the skills, and Blue is showing she has the chops as a First Mate. I am sort of a gearhead, and her comments while on the helm about feeling the boat were very real. The best experience you can have with a machine like Delos is when you know it well enough to know when it is right, and working with you.
The quiet nite passage stuff is wonderful. If you have a chance to do one of those limited talking, lots of Delos sounds under sail and the sea under you, the night sky... it would be a great gift.
I feel a lot of a similar magic in the high mountain and deserts of Nevada. I find it interesting how desert people and ocean people find the same solace in such different yet eerily similar places...

And Brady... seamanship through and through. I saw Captain Brady in this episode. Confident, knowing, troubleshooting, teaching. Yes. It's what we do. Troubleshooting is essential for any sailor. Sean so capable - props dude. No doubt crew breathes easier with such an experienced and skilled hand. So much in this episode for sailors to love. sv Delos excellence I'll say it again. Night watches, nature, stars and fortunately in my experience phosphorescence, yes. So good. So So good. Good on ya' for all the souls on Delos bringing us this insight.

Did I mention I like to binge watch? Time to catch up on the Delos crew all the way back to Nov 2019. I'm a few videos in and I have to say the editing has been absolutely fantastic. Brady and Blue doing an awesome job in my opinion. The videos have a very nice vibe, meshing the music to the mood. I suspect that is the Blue touch coming through. Delos videos have always been good, I just can't remember if they were THIS good. Pats on the back all around.

Blue just has such a delicious way of describing her night watches. What a wonderfully congenial woman who really knows her way around a yacht of some considerable size. I mean she hoists the sails and stops the engine all on her own as if she were just starting a car. You will not find such a beautiful creature every day. Lucky the gang that gets to sail with her. Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

My son just went to a chain shop and ordered 100 metres of chain. The chain was hauled out of the barrel in ten metre lengths. The chain cutter was brought from the tool cabinet.
The chain cutter said are you sure this chain fits on your gypsy. My son said whats a gypsy? 12 inches was cut. A free sample of sailors life.

I really appreciate the commentary on the perspective gained by being out on the open ocean. I feel that feeling when I go out in nature for days on end. Brady, to be honest, when I started watching Delos videos years back I thought you were kind of a young punk, but now I have gained a lot of respect for you. Not to say I am any better or worse, but it really inspires me to see people progress in life in important ways. Even though I am making good money now(for a blue collar) you guys remind me that there are more important pursuits in life. Point is, Delos makes a positive difference in my life, and I'm sure in the lives of many people who are stuck in the rat race. Sincerely, thank you. Well wishes to Brian and Kazza.

You talk about the fact the swell never shows on film as big as it is in real life. (You get the same if you try to photograph a steep hillside on land - when the eye sees the photo it translates it into a more level view. Or maybe, it's REALLY quite level but when you're standing there it feels like a steep hill. Either way, it doesn't matter: what we need to show is the way the waves feel to you, on the boat.) However, watching the short clip at about 18:38-18.45, that works. Something about the angle, and the swell - you really feel how big that is, and sense the huge weight of water just rolling alongside. How can you create that feeling, and capture it on film? It is something to do with the boat rising and sinking, and the way one huge wave disappears behind another.

I lived 4 years on a US DDG, 400ft and 350 men. Even that gets crowded. I crossed the Atlantic 4 times, the last at 12 knots on one boiler to extend the fuel. I loved the sea. I wonder at the small boat sailor on open ocean passages. If the skipper is wise, the boat sound, and the crew skilled, the danger is minimized. But mother nature and Neptune have no mercy for the ignorant or unprepared. My advice to wannabees is to be careful, prepare, practice, and think it through.

Wilson!!! In the next episode, I expect to see some sticks stuck into the soccer ball and a bloody hand print on it! Blue, I was tots with you when you were talking about the special feeling between the boat and someone on watch who is the only person awake at that time. It's a lot of responsibility to just be handed a boat that size, as well as the lives of everyone on board but that's when you get to know the boat and all of her quirks, smells and sounds. Plus, that quiet time also allows people to reconnect with the natural world, the stars, the wind, the waves, the sun and the moon. I once had a pod of humpback whales surface all around a boat on which I crewed and then start to 'talk' to each other. The boat was becalmed and I was the only one not asleep and you could hear and feel their voices reverberate against the hull. I actually woke up two crew just so I could share that experience with them! There have been other experiences I've had like this during a long night watch but those solo watches are something special!

I love all your vlogs, all of them. But your passage vlogs, those are first among equals. Maybe because they show what I desire most, which is to free myself a bit from all these constructs (roads, cars, buildings, clocks, email), and simplify. I know a sailboat is technology, and that you guys use technology for weather, safety, etc. But it seems that life on passage is so much simpler and beautiful. Happy and safe sails to the Delos crew, and thank you.

Used to have marina-mate with a 45 ft old restored wooden yawl rigged boat. It was so easy to balance the helm at any point of sail. Love it when the boat is taking care of herself!

A multimeter is sooo handy. I personally enjoy seeing you all try to catch your own food. Perhaps there is a family Delos fleet in the future with a couple of sailing vessels.

Awesome episode. I know it must be hard to make fresh new ways to capture passages but you do a great job. Love these episodes that show a lot of the hands in stuff sailing. Great shots, thanks for the inspiration

Re: Being on a boat at sea is a pressure cooker. Back when I was in the Navy, the saying was "Going to sea is like going to prison with the added possibility of drowning". Though I'd have to think being able to set your own schedule/destinations would ease that pain quite a bit... :)

What a great Captain/first mate/crew! Love watching Delos’ videos.
As a mom (62) I wonder if your parents worry about you because so much time w/no communication. But what a chance in a lifetime to do something as exciting as being aboard Delos traveling the world via the oceans!

Hard to imagine living on a 53' MONO haul with more then four or five people compared to a Cat that would have four bedrooms or more. Takes the right kind of people with the right attitude to do this day after day.

I loved the POV edit. Great cuts and the overlapping sounds really added a nice texture to the vid. Great story idea too. I have been watching regularly for 5 years and this was one of my favorites. I know a lot of time went into getting it right. Really well done. Thanks!

Brady, you've been on Delos from the start, and I can see you wanting your own boat. Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure you'll land on your feet and everything will work out for you. Stay safe, fair winds and take care of yourself and your family, friends and crew.
Have a Merry Christmas Delos and Delos tribe.
