I started my career in video production back in the 1980's. It was a real treat to hear the stories about "the good old days" of video shooting, editing and broadcast. I shudder now to think of how many hours I spent in edit suites, much to the chagrin of my family at the time. Your hard work and dedication to producing quality episodes has always stood out to me. Keep up the great work, Delos crew!
We SOOO Love Delos and would love to become patreons, but we make a meager income and are supporting grandchildren who live with us. But we LOVE what you do! We are living our dream through you all, as we are land bound. Thank you all for giving us our happy place!!!!!!!! If you come to Louisiana we would love to meet you and bring our grandchildren to meet you!
I started watching Cheryl and Paul on Cottage Life tv in Canada... they are what led me to search other sailing videos on RUclips and finding SV Delos... I’m such a fan of both so it’s wonderful to see them together! 😍
Like others here, I got hooked on sailing through Travel and Discovery channels' broadcasts of "Distant Shores." I have been fortunate enough to travel to many of the locations I first saw through their lens, and it was a great pleasure to be able to tell them that in-person at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in 2017. The best part of Paul and Sheryl is that their love of the cruising lifestyle, sailing, and travel, and sharing it with others, remains undiminished after almost 3 decades. I look forward to watching Delos grandchildren 2 or 3 decades from now in real time on my holographic display!
Paul and Sheryl are from our hometown and we have sat in on many of their presentations at the Toronto boat show and we even saw them and their second distance shores boat when we were in the Bvis!! It’s do great to see channels get together!!
An interesting comment Brian said was something like, "we started sailing to disconnect, and now because of our lifestyle and profession, we find it hard to disconnect". Paul added "people want instant replies". So true, we are all on a 24/7 leash. Great episode gang! You have so much in common, and so many experiences between the 4 of you! Congrats!
Brian, you should become a talk show host! That was a great interview. Paul and Sheryl were fun to listen to, and so informative. And their history in documenting their sailing life, WOW. I'm old enough to remember all that old technology. At least they didn't have to start with really old FILM movie cameras! 8 - O
I agree Brian is a great interviewer! And no we didn't have to film on actual film movie cameras. I definitely don't miss the "bad old days" editing video tape-to-tape!
Distant Shores TV I would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you! I remember watching you guys on the travel channel etc. and being fascinated by the content. You guys really are responsible for making it seem possible for a young man 1000 miles from the ocean to one day own a boat and live the sailing/travelling lifestyle. Your efforts have enriched my life and I’m sure the lives of many others, you should be proud of your accomplishments.
@@zorroonmilkavitch1840 You mentioned the key: Brian on his game; he does his homework, has an approachable personality, invites people to talk rather than firing monotone questions, and even those without any knowledge about sailing nor broadcasting pick up on those qualities. Good comment! (Your's too, 😉😆👍)
The Pioneers of Sailing video / TV! I used to watch these shows on TV as a much younger man and thought it was so cool to go around the world in a sailboat! Thanks for the video guys. Interesting stories told.
Very good interview, Brian. As a retired video editor it was interesting to hear them talk about how they got started. I spent 35 years in the business starting in 1969! The changes in technology were immense. For most of the time I worked with analogue tape. First it was 2" reel to reel, then 1", then 3/4" or 1/2" cassette, and finally digital tape. By the 90s digital editing was appearing which was an enormous change. With tape if you wanted to add a shot in the middle, you had to re-edit everything following! We had computers to control the tape, so a lot could be automated, but it still took time. The cost of a tape edit suite seems to have been similar in Europe. Around £1K per 8 hour day. The biggest change from my point of view, is that editing on tape from the camera originals would get you about 1 minute of finished material per day, whereas now it is about 1 minute per hour. When I retired the technology had just reached the stage of being able to edit on FinalCut Pro at full 1080. Before that you would have to work at a lower resolution to produce an "off-line" cut which would then be conformed from the HD tapes or files. The other thing that happened is that I got to edit actual film! this was in the 90s, and the film would be digitized so I could edit it on a computer. This would produce a negative cutting list, the neg would be cut and then digitized to allowed the sound work to be done. Now you can shoot in 8K, edit and do all the effects digitally and then project digitally. And even more amazing to me, I can shoot in 720 with my still camera, and edit it on my laptop! Keep up the good work guys. I love the quality of your channel. If I was still in the business, I would not hesitate to hire you to shoot and edit for me. I used to sail back in the day, mainly round the south coast of England, and in the Channel, but also in the Med. Watching your stuff brings back good memories.

Well this Delos video is an eye opener. To Paul and Sheryl Shard a very big applause. Watching and listen to the differences then and now is an eye opener. You mentioned the commercial side a bit is another hurdle to deal with. This Interview by Bryan and Karin is so enlightening. I do recall playing with editing real to real back in the 80's. You covered things about the making of these videos that I hadn't even considered. You make it look so easy but I didn't realise the amount of work involved in these 25 minute shows. The editing, the music, the monetisation; The hidden soap-opera behind the scenes... So much more personal stuff I'd love to know... Perhaps you're saving stuff for a future book? I've been playing catch-up with Delos since discovering your channel a few months back now and it's amazing just how the quality has improved since the very beginning. I do hope you keep those early ones on here as they show just what is possible for beginners; something to aspire to. To do all of this and keep your boat aflaot is just simply amazing; you guys must have super-powers. I'm loving your channel immensely; the TV hasn't been on once since I found you.
Hey Matthew, thanks so much and glad you liked the interview. It is indeed a labor of love to make these videos, but in return we have really gotten so much more out of the journey because of it.... Yeah it has been an interesting evolution. Sometimes I go back and watch the older ones too. I think it's important to remember where we all started! Funny that you mention the book idea. We started working on a concept last year to cover the first 3 years of the trip, where we were only writing blogs and not making any videos. I really want to cover the personal struggle I went through trying to figure out if selling everything, buying a boat, and quitting my job was the right decision. I hope to cover all this and also the early years of us really struggling financially, stopping to work, and how we started everything. It's been fantastic to reflect back on the beginning of the trip and how new, fresh, and very uncertain everything was. I hope the concept is interesting to others out there. Fair winds and thanks so much for watching! Capt. Brian

YESSS!!! Finally I have been waiting for a video like this with SV Delos and Distant Shores. I have watched Distant Shores on TV since I was a kid ( I am 29 now).
Brian, Fantastic interview with the pioneers of sailing videos. I've watched Paul and Sheryl many times on AWE here in the States. Great story tellers.
Ahhhh Kazza & Brian, that was such an eye-opener; almost makes a person scared to RUclips and edit. You could get lost in the editing process all by itself. No wonder why you guys are showing episodes from months ago. Thank you for once again stepping outside the box and doing this excellent interview with Paul and Sheryl. When I was a kid we had 8mm film which you had to physically cut with a scalpel, each frame you wanted to edit. It was great fun, especially sellotaping them back together. Animation had to be done physically too, filming objects/writing/Plasticine models etc a couple of frames at a time. I loved it a lot. So easy now tho, gives a lot more time to do other things lol, like watching your shows. Damn....I love technology :)
Although I am more of an aeroplane person, I love to watch sailing videos. Watched Paul and Shery in the old days here in South Africa as well. Nice program, good job.
I live in Texas dfw dont have a sail boat no plans to ever sail, yet I enjoy all tech about sailing and feel I've learned so much from watching sailing channels, that has enriched my understanding of the earth and cultures around the world.
I used to watch Distant Shores on Saturday afternoons when I was in high school (back in the mid-90’s)! Was delighted when I came across them on RUclips a few months ago. Probably their fault that I love traveling so much.
I've mostly stopped watching TV. Every time I'm watching some program, I want to comment about something but can't. I could possibly write a letter or an email but the likelyhood to get a reply seems to be pretty minimal. On RUclips, when I write a thoughtful comment on one of the channels I'm watching, I frequently get an answer, a heart tag or at least comments from other watchers. This feels really rewarding, interacting with all these people. Also, sometimes there is a chance to visit some of them, which is really great. (At least I think so) the people in the videos are really the people you've seen in the videos and not just some actors.
@@svdelos That's what I'm talking about. If I write a letter to the TV station that's broadcasting something from Distant Shores, I highly doubt they'll ever see the letter. Some intern might read it, but that's all. I used to work for a company that ran the web site of some star, that's pretty much what was happening. You take the time reading the comments, write answers, you must be getting nearly a thousand comments per week. Thank YOU for taking the time to do this, on top of shooting the vids, editing and keeping the boat running! This is the reason why I watch nearly no broadcast TV any more! :-)
That was some great insight from a lovely couple and from all reports, legends of the seas. There sure is a lot of work that goes into these productions and always show my gratitude with a thumbs up and a comment if I have one. Whilst not always at sea in his adventures, if you have never heard of him, do some research on a man by the name of Alby Mangels. He set sail in the 70's on a late 1800's yacht that he navigated with compass and sextant on what he called a world safari. Alby was THE man and no situation flustered Alby. He just got shit done with a whole lot less than what is available today. cheers.
Thanks for this! I would love someone to interview them about the changes they've seen in the oceans over the years! I'll have to go back and look at their shows to see if they ever talk about that!!
Fantastic introduction to the history of making sailing movies! This illustrates the enormous effort and dedication that is needed by those who decide to do this. It’s not easy and the fact that it looks so easy is proof of that, but this is the best taste of how hard the effort is that I have seen. Also, if very smooth and deliberate transition to solicitation for funds! A better job I have never seen.
great honor to see this video, and this wonderful couple. Very informative, and i giggled along the way remembering all the work and cost of editing back in the day, the comments on television media compared to youtube media is profound. great video thanks.
@SVDelos Great interview! Loved hearing Distant Shores history! It's remarkable how far technology has come in such a short time. When I started selling fax machines in 1983 I was often asked: "that's great but who would I fax"? When I started selling offshore cruising boats in 1987 there was no internet, GPS, chart plotters, AIS or sat-com!
Hi, in that case you can probably tell me the answer to what I was about to post: In 1989 - 92, did they have GPS? Or were ther still spreading out charts and dead-reckoning a course?
@@rogerstone3068 Back in 89-92 and before it was LORAN-A, LORAN-C, RDF (Radio Direction Finding), OMEGA and good ole fashion celestial navigation followed by DR (Dead reckoning) Seems I recall GPS coming out around early 90's or so...it really changed the game of navigation. Nowadays to get the younger generation to take a Cel Nav fix they think it's for nostalgic purposes...but it's not. GPS can be turned off or degraded if the government so chooses, with good reason of course.
Thanks for the inspiration! It’s amazing how technology made it so much more accessible for both creators and viewers. It seems the challenges of being discovered and to be able to make a living out of the work you put in are so different. Also, it’s good to hear that the time from shooting footage to pushing publish most of times isn’t “the daily vlog from yesterday” for you guys either. We’ve been struggling with keeping up the edits as we sail almost every day and shoot gigabytes every week. Finding the balance to sit down and stay on anchor and NOT EXPLORE THIS WEEK is very challenging we found. Thanks for the interview! These words keep us going! 😘
Thanks so much. Love the history and evolution behind the 2 channels. You all bring so much enjoyment to so many sailors and dreamers. Great job all of you. Cheers.
Really outstanding interview-fascinating to see the transition over time. Absolutely loved this. Used to watch Distant Shores on broadcast/cable when my children were just babes. Love following them on here now.
Great interview Brian! Such an amazing insight into the world of a quality you tube videographer. It is not just point shoot and make some bucks. It is a lot of hard work to generate a high quality of work with a significant investment in camera gear, computers, and software to get the job done and keep people coming back for more. SV Delos you have done such a fantastic job at this. Distant shores I love both Paul and Sheryl as well and you both put out a great product as well! Fair winds and best wishes!
We absolutely agree with you that the Shards are pioneers of sailing videos; I would go a step farther and call them The Godfather and Godmother of sailing videos. We love Paul and Sheryl. Delos is awesome as well. Really, we like all of the channels out there, but these two are the best (Distant Shores and Delos). 😊
Good one! Great to get some insight into the kind of effort it takes and a reminder that it won’t be as good as you wish it at the beginning... accept that your on a journey learning a new skill. ❤️🙏🏼
great video guys! it is amazing to see the shift from cassette SD to uploading 4k. I can only imagine the time involved in working with older equipment. Even editing something from a few months ago can be taxing not to mention 3 years. It is so easy to film your personal adventure and very hard to get it all edited as more time passes. Some useful tips guys thanks for sharing.

Let me give this a like for you fellas. Brian - honestly, you have a voice for narration and you really ought to explore it if possible. Distant shores home is only an hour from mine. She’s a sweet lady for sure. Cheers
Yeah, it really is amazing isn't it? The internet and evolution in cameras and small powerful computers has enabled so much. Thanks for watching! Capt. Brian
As for me I love to see the boat working. The sail changing. How the charts are looking from time to time. Dealing with customs and what you need to stop in another country.
I have to shout out to everyone how good I feel Right now ,I just randomly went back and watched Episodes 113,14,15 again And wanted dance laugh and sing .I feeeeeel good.

Great chat with some legends in adventure broadcasting. You guys all make it look so easy. Those tape to tape to tape transitions still give me nightmares. Fair winds and keep the adventure going. Cheers from a desk jockey chair skipper
This was a great surprise seeing the notification for this video! I learned a lot that I didn't know about Distant Shores. I love seeing you guys with other sailor RUclipsrs! I REALLY wanna see you guys with Sailing La Vagabonde ;)
Meh ... not really, La Vagabonde are sellouts, completely different perspective and different audience. They're in it for the money, but Delos is much more inspirational and have moved on a long time ago from the click-baity-chick-in-bikini-thumbnail to get more views.

@@jastark22181 I was following Elayna and Riley a while back ago, and even was a Patron at one point. I got into sailing thanks to Distant Shores, Delos, Uma, Nahoa and other sailing channels including La Vaga. I just feel like they've unfortunately moved on from DIY sailing videos to promote, earn money, and the commercial aspect has taken over their authenticity. The quality of their videos has not improved much over time, the editing and content is pretty poor by comparison to many others, yet they're making a killing in terms of viewers and financial bottom line. The reason being that their audience doesn't know any better and for the most part are not sailors, but rather millenials who are living their dreams through them.
Comment number 139, too many to read all of them tonight but I suspect I'd agree with 129 of them. 👍👍👍 I loved all of the video but my favorite part was the drone shot at 00:07 to 00:25. Sailing right up on the beach with class. 😁 👍👍👍👍

Animation had to be done physically too, filming objects/writing/Plasticine models etc a couple of frames at a time. I loved it a lot. So easy now tho, gives a lot more time to do other things lol, like watching your shows. Damn....I love technology :)
OMG, this is so awesome. Love the old photos of Paul and Cheryl.
Well done S V Delos - I vote you the best sailing channel on you tube - I didn't realise the effort you guys put in to make this possible
Super job Brian, your effort in getting us good content is really appreciated.
I watch Sheryl and Pauls channel and much much respect for their sailing life experiences that they have shared with us. A Big THANK YOU. : )peace
Thanks for sharing this authoritative account of what it takes to do what Distant Shores and Delos do.
And this is why I watch and subscribe to both your channels.
Have been watching DS for decades .
Cheers
I've mostly stopped watching TV. Every time I'm watching some program, I want to comment about something but can't. I could possibly write a letter or an email but the likelyhood to get a reply seems to be pretty minimal.
On RUclips, when I write a thoughtful comment on one of the channels I'm watching, I frequently get an answer, a heart tag or at least comments from other watchers. This feels really rewarding, interacting with all these people.
Also, sometimes there is a chance to visit some of them, which is really great. (At least I think so) the people in the videos are really the people you've seen in the videos and not just some actors.
We actually do read the comments, and try to answer questions if possible. Fair winds, and thanks so much for taking the time to comment. Capt. Brian
He just got shit done with a whole lot less than what is available today. cheers.
BTW, you could drop a link for the lazy people to their channel.
Thanks for this! I would love someone to interview them about the changes they've seen in the oceans over the years! I'll have to go back and look at their shows to see if they ever talk about that!!
Thank you for all of your hard work, Delos. The Shards seem like lovely people, as well.
Also, DS III looks like a real nice boat.
You all are absolute legends
Love your channel
Old fart here, I was watching Distant Shores back in the 90's. Amazed they are still alive and sailing. Very cool interview !
@@jseadog1394 thats a scary thought, turning off gps. The world would stop spinning!
Excellent. I used to watch Distant Shores on TV all the time. These days I don't bother with TV.
Two of my favourite channels, best of luck to you both
Thanks for showing respect to the Original Salty Dogs. I have watched DS for years which brought me to your channel.
Cheers.
Fantastic interview. I have always followed Paul and Sheryl!
Watching Distant Shores brought me to Delos! My two first (and favorite) channels!
Same
Loved the chat,,.i have learned so much in just this one video..Month in to watching your channel, from the start,.and this is how far i am now, once i have cough up i will most certainly subscribe,..you are living the livelong dream i have had and never did ,but no regrets here..keep up the good work.Hennie.
This was such a fantastic history lesson!!! We were really surprised to have not heard of SV distant shores but now totally going to check them out!! Thank you for being so inspiring... we bought a drone and fly it around our Hobie... sail on SF Bay... did our first trip to the BVIs in April that was EPIC and can’t wait to go again and retire on a boat together!!!!
One couple pioneered the art of sailing lifestyle videos the other perfected it.
I love that this was cut and edited in the style of a DS episode. Brilliant editing. Thanks for sharing it!
Enjoyed them at the Toronto Boat show... very nice people great ambassadors for Canada. Thanks for interviewing them... very informative!
I watch Distant Shores on AWE. It’s always nice look at my dvr and see Distant Shores. I actually just checked and one recorded today. Season 10 episode 8, Green Turtle Cay. Can’t wait to watch it.
Let me give this a like for you fellas. Brian - honestly, you have a voice for narration and you really ought to explore it if possible.
Distant shores home is only an hour from mine. She’s a sweet lady for sure. Cheers
Grew up on distant shores. Now that initial inspiration has shaped me.
Southerly yachts are so cool. You can ground the boat at low tide to do hull work. Saw some of these at Annapolis boat show in 2017.
Awesome interview guys ;-)! It's amazing how much things have changed over a relatively short period of time
Yeah, it really is amazing isn't it? The internet and evolution in cameras and small powerful computers has enabled so much. Thanks for watching! Capt. Brian
I started my sailing video binge-watching with Distant Shores! I love this crossover! :)
As for me I love to see the boat working. The sail changing. How the charts are looking from time to time. Dealing with customs and what you need to stop in another country.
What a fantastic interview!
The old and the new. Both very gracious
Extremely well said.
Thank you for the pleasure of watching this video) from Russia with love
seems like such a nice lady! thanks for sharing, will be shure to follow Distant Shores.
I do love your 30 min videos. It really feels like a tv show.
I have to shout out to everyone how good I feel
Right now ,I just randomly went back and watched Episodes 113,14,15 again
And wanted dance laugh and sing .I feeeeeel good.
I received my towel and shirt. The towel is awesome and so soft!! I love it. The shirt is awesome to!! 🌞❤⛵🌊 love the videos when you interview people and do boat work!! You cant please everyone. Its impossible.
Hey Anita- Awesome, so glad you like the shirt and towel! And thank you very much for supporting our project with your purchase. Fair winds- Capt. Brian
I think Delos tells a good story but when you need that spontaneous energy, Brian has Mr Brady. Having a few beautiful women around also doesn’t hurt. Love your videos Brian, thanks.
I love the choice of T-shirt.... Sailing Bubbles had a lot of influence as well
Long live Alex Rust! I actually got that shirt from our early contribution to help fund Chasing Bubbles :)
Can't wait till I'm in my own videos and people ask me about my Delos shirt!
Great chat with some legends in adventure broadcasting. You guys all make it look so easy. Those tape to tape to tape transitions still give me nightmares. Fair winds and keep the adventure going. Cheers from a desk jockey chair skipper
Capt. Brian the voice over master. You have that compression dialed in. Sounds like my preset I use on radio/audio production. Yay! For Adobe suite.
Ha yep, what wonders the Multiband compressor can do :)
Love those two. Thanks for sharing this. They are awesome.
@@cryptosail0r You can't hate them for wanting to make a livin off of what they're doing. They still seem like they're good people to me! I never understood the people that got mad at them when they got that Cat. either... Everyone's goal should be to better themself and their situation
I loved all of the video but my favorite part was the drone shot at 00:07 to 00:25. Sailing right up on the beach with class. 😁 👍👍👍👍
Aye, I've been going through all these formats as well… And an edited vid like this is very informative and really tells the story. Good work m8's!
Awesome! Love all guys
Awesome Interview! You guys are both great at telling the story!
I remember those shows our local cable channel used to have them on Saturday afternoons I recognized the the name and it brought back memories of my Saturday hang over shows lol realy good stuff
Gotta say that the image of a Southerly on the beach here is just gorgeous. I'm not a fan of 220V, but being able to beach a monohull is a huge thing.
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!! for this very explanatory video and highlighting that for all of those (us) committed youtube video channel's that A LOT of time and yes $costs$ go in to producing video's for people to watch/enjoy anywhere!!
THANK YOU! 😀👌🍻⛵
Any advance in technology is characterized as "doing it faster & doing it w/Less..." That's the essence of it.
i did wedding videography for a few years. 6hr per minute finished product for the highly produced segments was not uncommon. I have just started cutting our sailing footage and I expect I'll probably be in the 4hr ish per minute area. Glad to see that I'm not too far off of the Delos edit rate.
Legends! I remember catching a couple of episodes on PBS awhile back... Stopped everything I was doing to watch. Love it!
Absolutely fabulous thank you both DELOS and DISTANT SHORES III *****
Wow...this was fascinating...thank you so much for this video and interview...so amazing to hear particularly how technology has changed....Thank you...well done!!
