We’re doing a “first touch” sort of thing! My fiancé actually was very adamant about wanting that moment of seeing me walk down. We’re going to hide on either side of a corner and hold hands and pray!😊
That’s what I want to do!
We are doing a first look and reading our vows to each other. I LOVE when people write their own vows, but we are both very private and don't want to stand in front of a hundred people and say them. So we're going to read them to each other before the wedding and have the videographer capture it. That way I can get all my tears out and still fix my makeup before the ceremony! LOL

@@JamieWolfer even if he won't it'd be great to hear about his thoughts on the WHOLE process. My boyfriend is sooo cute and clueless about the whole process. He said he wished there were more videos for him to understand how to pick a ring and propose and he's Ukrainian so the traditions are totally different. I was also searching for a couples wedding prep video where it clues the guys in on budgets, peer pressures gals face, etc...

For me doing a first look has nothing to do with photos, it’s more about me and my fiancé being in the right state of mind. We’re both big criers and I think we need to get the ugly crying out of the way, honestly probably won’t have a lot of photos during the first look
Lindsey Hagen yes I have even heard of first looks being a top secret (so no photos because even the photographer doesn’t know).
Haha I am a crier so that is a reason I am doing. My good friend can retouch the makeup. And Il be less nervous...I HATE being in front of people so I know he can help calm my nerves
My husband and I saw each other before the ceremony 30 years ago. He is very tall and he had a few hairs sticking up and needed powder on his forehead to not shine in the pics. We then took all the pics before the wedding with all the bridal party and family. We were the first people at our reception and it was great. My daughter is getting married this June and she and her fiancée will do a first look and then we will take all the pics at the church of the bridal party and family. They will be the first ones at the reception and have time to be alone before they are presented without having all the guests to wait to begin the party. The older members of both families will be able to be in the pictures and then partake of the party as they wish and then leave when they need too. A big win for everyone.
Love this, my guy is in the military and I have a sneaking suspicion that he will not cry in uniform in front of everyone so a first look is an awesome option for us!

Love that you dispelled this myth @ 8:00! I've said this to so many of our couples. I also love you said not to be pressured into doing a first look. We often give pros and cons and then say "We are 100% supportive of what you feel is perfect for you!" Great advice!
Jamie will you make a video specifically on DAYTIME weddings, pros and cons, things to consider, etc? Like a 10 AM wedding let's say with a brunch reception.
I was totally against the First Look thing because of tradition... but gosh now you've made me think about this O.O it sounds nice...
I struggle with anxiety. I know that if I could not see my fiancé on the day I would have a panic attack. I feel like it would bring me far more peace to do one Plus the benefit of extra photos is priceless to me.

Now we are getting married on the 29th May 2021, it's a few weeks away from now. I really want to thank you coz all your videos have been a grate help. My future hubby does not want first looks, but I do. This is still up in the air. Making him watch this video as we speak. Proud to say there was minimum eye rolling when i told him he was going to watch this with me😂. My fiance and I faced the same thing! He doesn't want one, and I do, so we brainstormed and I came up with a compromise! There's lots of couples that have "first looks" while on either side of a door, or tree, or whatever else. So y'all don't see each other (because my man wants to save that for seeing me walking down the aisle) but you can still have each other's presence, and that's perfect for me because I know I'll probably be a mess on the day of, worrying about everything going smoothly 😅 though I am hoping to have a coordinator the day of, just to help run things, I heard you could possibly hire a planner/coordinator for JUST the big day, so I'm looking into it. I hope that helped at least a little!

I love the idea of doing a first look, it will be non-pressured time together before the wedding. Plus, I think I will be more relaxed in the photos because I won't be thinking about my guests at cocktail hour and how long we are taking away from them. I love the idea of taking a few minutes for ourselves privately after the vows. Plus, the photographer told me then we can get more photos of our guests during cocktail hour. Good point, I never thought about giving the photographer more time with more backgrounds to choose from.

Something that is very common here in Utah is do a bridals photoshoot prior to the wedding. It's separate from engagements and the day of. That's when most people do their first look as well as a big chuck of the couple only pictures. You still get the sentimental pictures but it doesn't take time in your day of timeline.
My fiance actually wanted to do a first look, because we've been to (and been in) a few weddings over the last two years (including his sisters) and he hates taking a lot of pictures and missing the actual wedding (cocktail hour/reception) for them. I was actually hesitant, because like you said, I thought it would ruin the moment of walking down the aisle and seeing each other for the first time, but I agreed to do the first look because I also don't want to miss all of that time being with our guests and him for photos. But my fiance is a lot like your husband. He's very goofy and silly and so seeing that you both still had that moment, even after seeing each other earlier for first look photos made me cry. I'm not getting married until next February and we just booked our photographer, but now I'm super excited for our first look! Thank you so much for this video and all of your videos!
Having more time for photos, getting those prewedding jitters out of the way, and spending some quality time before being swept away by the guests were the exact reasons why we chose a first look. We wanted some time to take in the intimate moment.

Your videos are keeping me on track as I am doing our wedding planning. I was just thinking about first look a little while ago. My fiance is also a little weird when a camera is around. We just took our engagement photos and it was a weird but fun time taking pictures. I am going to show him this video.
Asian weddings you’re up at 4am to get ready by 9am to have various different of ceremonies that last til about 12 or 1pm. Wedding doesn’t end til 3am lol. When you have family from out of town party continues to your house or your parent’s house.
These videos are the only thing keeping me sane in the planning process

OMG Jamie I needed this video so badly. We have recently (finally... yay!) set our date and picked our venue and some core vendors. While talking to our photographer she was under the assumption that we would do a first look, which did not make me happy. I originally wanted to do a first look with my dad because hello they are adorable! But since then my fiancé’s aunt (our mistress of ceremonies) has been really trying to convince me to do one with my fiancé. She was basically saying everything you said... more time for photos and less pressure. My fiancé is very emotional so he is going to cry no matter what. I’m very torn because the photos are the most important thing to me, but I’m just not sure I’m willing to sacrifice that traditional side of things. And everyone tells me “oh you do what you want because it’s your day!” No. That does not help me.

Late to the video here, but you just completely converted me from a "never in my life would I do a first look" to "OMG I have to have a first look".
I'm the weird one in my relationship and I wanted a first look but the groom is not comfortable with it. He wants the traditional moment so that's what were going for 😊

Another Con (from my experience): Getting stuff all over your dress :D My best friend did a first look in a park and after the shoot we had to scramble to get all the bugs out of her 7! layers of tulle. Oh I also stepped on her and my dress, ripped both (just a little but you know.. Aaaah), because I was walking through grass in heels. Would have been equally bad after the ceremony but there was a lot more drama, because you want to look perfect for your walk down the aisle.

My fiancé and I are planning on doing our first look a month prior with our dog, photographer and videographer. We will be also reading our personalized vows to each other then. We choose this because we are more private people and wanted an elopement but we care too much about our big families. We also couldn't have our dog at the venue 😢. Just another option!
Yes! I am so glad that you made this video. This is something that I have debated on when thinking about my future wedding, whenever that may be. You explained both the pros and cons perfectly and are so correct when saying that it's truly a personal decision. I think I have made up my mind to still do the first look just for timing purposes so I'm not stressing. but I like how you mentioned that sometimes the guys don't want to do it because they want that moment at the altar. I'm also glad that you mentioned that it really doesn't usually ruin that moment at the altar, because that is something that I was relatively concerned about. I wanted to do a first look with my fiance but he has strong feelings about wanting to save that moment for the ceremony and hos feelings are very important to me and I want him to feel heard. He knows I really want to do one so he said I should do it with my dad. But I have two dads *bio and step* and I can't choose between the two. I've decided to do it with my oldest brother. I'm so excited because he's the one that's really been there for me

Oh my gosh, I don’t know what’s wrong with me today, but I definitely teared up watching this video. I am definitely the weird one out of the two of us, so u feel like I’m leaning towards the first look, but I’m also so traditional. And Jimmy is no help (“I’m going to cry either way, so it’s up to you.”)
My fiance is red-green colorblind so we're probably not going to do a first look. Instead, he will see me for the first time coming down the aisle, and then during photos after, we'll have him put on enchroma glasses so it will kind of be a "first look" since it'll be the first time he's seeing me in full color

I made a grand master list of pictures for my photographer amd his assistant and we were planning on 3 first looks. Bridal party, FOB, and groom then an immediate sweep into the wedding party photos so we didnt have to do them after the ceremony.
I’m the bride in 💕less than a week. I have the case of finger guns it’s just my thing & I was thinking omg what if I bust out with guns 😂 during the ceremony so thank you so much for this information .
Ok sooooo I was so against doing a first look but after watching this video and I am seriously considering it. 1. Because taking an hour and a half worth of pictures after the ceremony will probably make my fiance super aggravated. (I don't want it to take that long either). 2. I think it would help to calm my nerves and my fiance's before walking down the aisle. I think it might help me from ugly crying down the aisle too. 3. It will give us an opportunity to have a special moment together before the craziness begins. I am so glad to hear you say that it did not have any effect on the moment of you walking down the aisle. One of my major concerns is that moment being ruined because we have already seen each other. And I think my fiance would really appreciate being able to react openly without having 200 people staring at him when he sees me for the first time that day.

My fiancé and I decided not to do a first look. Since the beginning the moment of those church doors opening and him seeing me for the first time is all I wanted. However that decision is costing us beautiful outdoor pictures since we are getting married November 29 in New Hampshire which means zero chance of sunlight after the ceremony. We will basically only have church pictures and some manufactured lighting pictures. But that’s the choice we made :)

First Looks sound great, but I’m worried about getting the dress dirty before walking down the isle. I’ve seen brides with a lot of floor dirt on their dresses when they get back from taking photos. But I guess you just have to be careful.

My wedding ceremony was at 5:30 at night.
We did all the photos beforehand so we didn't lose daylight and didn't have to have everyone wait for us during "cocktail hour"

The first look didn’t help with the emotions. I think I was so busy setting up, I didn’t have time to fully relax with the first look. When we lined up, I started filling up and was a mess and fell apart until the ceremony was over. But it was still wonderful.
My fiance wants the moment of seeing me for the first time walking down the aisle, so we're not doing it. I'm also super not a morning person... lol

So our compromise for a first look was to have time to talk and pray together, but not see each other. I'm incredibly awkward and get so nervous, but talking to my fiance can talk me down out of anything. We also are planning on using horses so actually coordination that is also important. Any tips of how to fit that into the schedule? Probably closer to the ceremony?
Shooting photos with the sun directly overhead is not the path to success. You can do alright with the sun behind your subjects if you have enough flash to fill it in though, but that's more kit to manage.
What do you mean by, "putting on a show" when the bride walks down the isle and sees his bride for the first time? What do you mean by "putting on a show"?

My man is one of the guys who doesn't want to be robbed of THAT moment but I'd like to do the first look. Mostly because our ceremony is set for 6pm and the sunset that time of year is usually around 7:30. Should I try and talk him into it because the location is so good for pictures or respect his wishes??
