  • Ever wondered to yourself, what is a morning basket? This term is often thrown around by homeschoolers, but there's so much variation in how families implement morning baskets, that it's hard to understand what they actually are or what purpose they serve. In this video, I break down what morning baskets are and give you some morning basket ideas. New to our channel? We're the Sognonvi family from Homeschool Wherever. We're a multiracial, secular homeschooling family based in New York City.

I think Pam Barnhill came up with morning basket... I could be wrong but she's the main person I know associated with doing them.

This is the best explained video about morning baskets! We are religious, but we don't buy religious homeschool material. I had a hard time understanding what morning basket was because most videos include religious material, but this explained it so well for me!

Right! I started doing morning baskets just this year and we have two baskets. One for the older girls and one for the younger kids. I have games, a scale and weights, hands on playing and sensory items as well as books.
It is a time for us to be together play together, talk together and kind of wake up our bodies and brains for the day.
    We are a mid-morning basket family ☕️☕️☕️☕️😅

This is such a great video! I love how you describe all the variations. When we started, I never really understood the morning basket except that it often included religious activities. As secular homeschoolers, we did "morning work" with new facts of the day, handwriting, and hidden pictures. This has given me some ideas that we might mix it up in the future.

For us it’s all about cosy time. I drink my post workout coffee, my older two drink their tea and I snuggle up with my little guy under a blanket while we read history or science books, discuss anything that’s on our minds, talk about goals etc...It’s a way to wake up our brains:)

So glad to have found you! Love finding other like minded homeschoolers. We are also secular and multiracial. I am Mexican, and my husband is African American. We also have 2 girls (technically 3, but the oldest is 22) that we've been homeschooling for the last 5 years. So happy I found you!

I am a homeschool nanny. Both of my homeschool families have had 2 kids and been multiracial. The first family had two boys. The mom is African and the husband is Hungarian. Now I work for a family with a white mom and Mexican (no accent) dad.

We do "sofa snuggle time". We cozy up under a blanket on the couch, and we read whatever subjects have a reading portion. Usually philosophy + discussion is one of them. I don't know why but it makes our whole day flow so much better!

I love that! We do something very similar and I agree, it’s nice to start the school day in such a cozy way.

We don’t do morning basket - and it has nothing to do with Charlotte Mason methods.

We do our read aloud time in afternoons followed by lessons. I have just not been able to get my daughter and myself on the same morning routine so starting after lunch is just simpler for us.

And I meant to say that I love the length of your videos, short and sweet. :)

That’s great! Yeah you definitely have to go with what works for your family. For us, I’ve found that if we start too late in the day and we finish later too, the girls feel like the whole day is too long. So we’ve actually found that an earlier start works for us.

Haha thank you! I do have some longer ones too but for these explainer videos I try to keep them pretty conscientious!

Wow we have so many similarities! I’m so glad you found our channel 😀 We haven’t actually started studying African history yet as we’ve been starting with the history of the pre-Colombian Americas, so I’m afraid I don’t have any resources I can recommend! But if I come across any I will definitely let you know.

Check out Urban Intellectuals. They have a lot of material for black history and they have materials for teaching kids (Sankofa club).
