This song is a good reminder that we are soldiers in God's army & we should be living the life a soldier ready to go to battle when the Saviour calls us. It reminded me of listening to TBN from Israel the other day & the two commentators were saying that they are both in the reserves & everything is ready for that sudden phone call telling them to report to their units should war break out in full force in Lebanon & their presence be needed & I thought of this song & asked myself the question - am I ready to go to war ?
Wonderful old hymn and excellent performance. In our hymnbooks (Just Hymns Old and New, Catholic Edition) it's been rewritten as "Onward Christian Pilgrims" with some dreadfully bland lyrics by Michael Forster. I miss the original. It reminds us that life is a spiritual battleground, not a playground. "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus" is another of my favourites.

I remember singing this hymn in a children's choir at a large Methodist church in the Kansas City (USA) area over 65 years ago. I remember that we stopped before the last chorus and asked the congregation to join us in the chorus. I've never heard the second verse before. Thank you for doing this hymn.

I love this,and re member singing it with such a powerful and scary voice (I thought ) at 6yrs old😂 , but now 90+ the ' flesh is willing but the vocal cords are not. Maybe it's a vital time to sing it ,even to encourage ourselves ❤
