    Imo, it doesn’t really matter if the Air Jordan 1 is overrated. The real question is are we as consumers too worried about conforming to this new standard of “style/culture” that we forget about what we may be missing out on things like quality materials, advancement in sneaker tech and the freedom to criticise a brand.

    My gripe is the Jordan 1 doesn’t have a GR year around availability. If the Chicago or Breds were a staple on the wall in stores, would it be hyped? Think AF1 white on white, Chuck Taylor’s. Classic staples. Jordan stays relevant bc they don’t make the store staple and changes the colors and materials. The silhouette is timeless.

    • @hagoshardaways9274

      So what are you saying will happen if a specific Jordan 1 colorway became a a store staple?

    • @YoRAHeem
      @YoRAHeem 2 года назад +10

      @@hagoshardaways9274 the market value stabilizes due to the OG colors staying stocked or available on a yearly rotation. The Chicago’s are Q1/Q2, Bred’s Q3/Q4. The demand will still be there for them to make some new colors but the core will likely just grab the stocked OG. They should also bring it back to $130.
      There’s way more variations of the AF1 Lo but the all white is still a top seller.

    • @ivanascencio4978
      @ivanascencio4978 2 года назад +2

      If that happened the Jordan 1 would lose its luster and spotting a Chicago or bred in public would feel meaningless cause then literally anyone could have them. I guess as someone who has the somewhat figured out the resale, it feels good to get a limited release. Also hard to get sneakers make you standout and you have to put in work or save up your money.

    Groundbreaking concept with this video. This genuinely felt like a real internal conversation Jacques may have with himself matriculating through this “Culture” as both a purist that was around when MJ was on the court & a trailblazer in 2022, in position to appreciate current innovation. I think the end of this video actually sums it up very well. Times have certainly changed & somehow a design from the Mid-80’s has morphed itself into so many different things across so many generations. Current designs & silhouettes feel very trapped in the era it was created. Even other Jordan models/retros don’t have the crossover ability of an AJ1. From the simple aesthetics to the nostalgia to the rebellious nature the sneaker influenced to the flexibility of it to dance in on TikTok, the AJ1 is truly the chameleon that can blend in with almost anyone of any age, anywhere.

    The problem is that Nike and Jordan brand over saturated the market with Jordan 1s. Look I love the 1s and its low variants, because they’re very easy to pair thanks to their timeless and classic look. Jordan 1s are like Vans or Chucks in that sense. But there’s just too many Jordan 1s now in all sort of variations (with zoom air, a removable zipper top, etc).
    Jordan Brand should cut down on the colorways and focus on producing more of the classic colorways with only a very few new colorways dropping alongside those every once in a while. This makes the good colorways much more accessible, and Jordan Brand can actually put in some quality materials if they narrow down the number of new Jordan 1 colorways released. And with this maybe they can mass produce Jordan 1s with zoom strobel units, like what Nike did for the Chucks in making all Chucks now have drop in Lunarlon midsoles.

    I 120% agree, I never owned a pair in my life...never as a kid growing up in the 90's and over the last few years I've seen nothing but a mad amount of people just rocking all sorts of Jordan brand stuff including the AJ1s from lows to highs.
    I caved and finally got myself a pair of mid's (don't hate) and I have to say, I don't really understand why people love this shoe as much as they seem to (outside the obvious resale values) because it's not comfy, has next to no arch support, has a weird fit (I have narrow feet and it feels off) is expensive given the worse quality compared to even other Nike stuff (the leather is the most cheap kind possible) and has less of an air unit that other models from Nike (the unit doesn't go full length and just slightly past the heel)....it's popular because what? resale? just the brand of Jordan itself?
    I own a few different AF1's (mids and highs) and I have to say outside it being a slightly more bulky shoe, it is a far superior shoe in everyway that counts compared to the AJ1's in terms of price, comfort, quality and support for me personally.

    I have liked the Jordan 1s for years and years at this point and will continue to do so. But Nike / Jordan are not handling them well of late. They definitely oversaturated the market with too many Jordan 1 releases , they need to pump the brakes on that as we legit sometimes see numerous AJ1 releases per month.
    And to make matters worse , yes liking and disliking certain sneakers is subjective but on top of too many AJ1 releases overall they are coming out with too many average if not full on bad colorways. Certain color blocking choices are just not too popular on the AJ1s ; we have seen that similar Shadow 2.0 , Pollens and the Marinas blocking not be particularly well received or get much hype. And in general looking at the likes of the Volts , Fusions, Patinas , Bordeauxs , Crafted , the few Gore-tex ones etc ; most of those are average if not bad. I don't even necessarily dislike all of those I listed but too many of those types of colorways are hurting the sneaker. Too many average and bad colorways on top too many AJ1 releases in general is doing the AJ1s a massive disservice.

      @@lilyantaki to each their own , liking and disliking sneakers is certainly subjective and i did say in my comment i do not personally dislike all the ones I listed. I do not dislike the Bordeauxs per say though i do not love them either. I will say a friend of mine who got them showed me in person and i was surprised how good the material quality was on the Bordeauxs considering that is the case less and less of late.
      But they were certainly one of those not very hyped , not popular or well received in general. I am not a reseller , though i sometimes have to go that route to get a personal pair that i like ; but look at the resale on the Bordeauxs. They hardly moved at all since the release. They are one of many that just were not that well liked / well received which Jordan has put out too many of on top of too many AJ1 releases overall.

    I’m in the middle I agree with both sides and I personally like how Jordan 1s are kinda the gateway shoe to get into sneaker culture I work at a shoe store and helped kids buy their first Jordan and the look and confidence they get is unmatched but companies should be making strides to be better both quality/material wise and design wise Yeezy is pushing boundaries with sneaker designs but it’s not at the Jordan level yet

    My personal problem with the Jordan 1 is that we're getting a new color way every other week. After they drop they color way that decide to make a 'look a like' version in a mid. It's confusing and collecting doesn't feel like collecting anymore. I liked the fact that I wasn't able 2 get all the colors because they only dropped once every other year.
    But hey that's just my opinion. I'm waiting for the OG color ways to come back so I can take a seat and let the youth have the rest.
    Thanks for the video papa Jacq.

    5’s are my fav. 1’s are the OG but definitely basic can be worn with anything which imo makes them less cool. My biggest issue with sneaker culture is following trends instead of buying what you like. Most people today aren’t into the clothes they buy they just wanna have a socially approved look.

    Great upload. ‘Definitely no reason to hate on J1s. Gazelles, Shelltoes, Stan Smiths and Sambas are older silhouettes that still sell more than other 3Stripes for the same reason.
    I don’t swoosh at all, but that’s no reason to hate on J1s. My one argument with “Golf Is Dope” Jacques is facts and history matters. Whether or not “the teenager now” values it. History is why the trend exists at all. Culture is built on history.

    I hate that people consider the OG Jordan 1 silhouette the end all be all. I have over 200 pair of Nike (including Jordans) and the OG Jordan 1 is the most uncomfortable out of all of them. Personally, I prefer the 3 or 4 as far as wearing all day and as unpopular of an opinion as it is, the Jordan 1 CMFT is a very comfortable all day shoe that has some pretty fire colorways.

    I think there's a crossover between Michael Jordan / sports fans and 'sneakerheads'
    BBall and MJ fans will always have love for the J1 and will forever carry the silhouette. I wouldn't clas someone who only collects Js as a 'sneaker head' To me, they're MJ fans and essentially buying merch.
    I've never really followed BBall, being from the UK, it isn't easily accessible.
    At the moment, Js are 'on trend' I think the trend has lasted so long because some of the new-comers (Me included) discovered the shoe before the extent of the stories behind many of the colourways. Once people understand that sometimes it isn't just a colourway, it's a representation of something much greater, then passion and a deeper appreciation begins to develop. This I think is the big difference when compared to some other trending brands.
    Big collaborations over the past few years have also helped them stay at the forefront of pop culture.
    Eventually it'll fade away, sooner rather than later IMO but the OGs and newbies that developed that appreciation of story telling through art and design will continue to purchase Js and I think they'll forever be timeless

    I have a question out of full curiosity: is the sneaker culture becoming overrated? Like nowadays I find it so common to at the malls and school. For example, Nike dunks, Jordan 4s and Jordan 1s etc. I feel like not a lot of people have a lot of knowledge of the shoes. I remember when the off white tens were released. Same with the Yeezys when they were first released not a lot of people knew about the Yeezys. I think back then it was less common to see most of these shoes because no one could really afford them. Imo I feel like it’s killing the game but again it’s my opinion.

    It's a mix of comfort and classical shoe design. So many other sneakers look way to modern and crazy to wear with formal attire or relaxed office attire. Like a foamposite or pegasus trail. But the 1s still look close to an office shoe design. Shoes haven't changed much over time but sneakers have. That's why 1s can still be seen as both cool and stylish (not crazy like a what the).

    Wore AF1s back in middle school and they were the basic shoe. Now its "trendy". Way over hyped.
