I agree with your Kang theory. I think Star Lords next film could be Eternals 2 cause of his connections to ego he could be involved with helping them.
Rocket seeing his friends again in heaven genuinely had me tearing up. That’s one of the greatest Marvel scenes ever. His decision of “I’m done running.” was the icing on the cake.
i love Lylla and Rocket so much. ever since the telltale games flashback, ouch. i've listened to the spoilers, the trailers, the non spoilers, and i'm still going to listen to the movie when it comes to disney plus with, hopefully audio description. I'm blind, so AD is very important. Spoilers that go in sequence with the movie are a next best thing to AD, as you can sort of follow along with the movie if there's no AD on the movie itself. Oh so now they're here, and you hear the dialogue, and then you follow along with a spoiler and you know that this scene is when a thing happens. descriptive spoilers are great for this very reason, as sometimes Audio description is not provided on released movies, Zootropolis is one such, though it was provided by the BBC in my country, though not on disney plus in my country. the provision of AD is patchy at best.
Thank you, this scene stood out so much to me too. I lost someone some time ago and Rocket’s reaction to Lyla passing was so so real. Triggering but beautiful in a weird way… Life would be meaningless if we didn’t love.
When Rocket cried when Lylla was killed, it was heartbreaking to see and hear. I think this is Bradley Cooper’s best performance in the MCU, and I believe, in my opinion, that his voice performance is Oscar worthy.
I’m so happy none of the guardians died in this film. They ended everything off perfectly with every character. James Gunn perfectly settled his characters down, but also left room for more without it feeling like it’s forced. I loved this movie so very much. It meant so much to me. The emotions, the comedy, the heart - everything worked. It’s currently my second favourite MCU project, only behind Infinity War.
Same, they set this up. Oh man rocket and drax are gonna die, every second of the movie I thought rocket or drax were gonna die. Nice to see Star Lord continue his story.
That's the problem with these movies now, playing it safe with no one dying and teasing it so much I absolutely HATE that and it drops the quality when the movie SAYS no one is safe, yet they stay safe in the most high stakes situations.....it's bad
@@ninjanibba4259 characters don’t need to die for a story to have an impact. I could just as easily say it’d be lazy, forced and predictable if Gunn killed off Drax or Rocket.
@@ninjanibba4259 yondu, gamora, Tony, Natasha…all dead. Stakes were real, but not everything has to end in death. It doesn’t cheapen the ending. I felt the tension the whole way.
@@Luke_SkywaIker it wasn't forced, Drax should've died, the movie teased everyone dying at some point and kept faking out, that's one of the laziest form of writing 101
Just came out of it. It was a much needed “reward” after my math final. This movie had me bawling man, but it was really really great! I wish the MCU could be constantly this. For the Guardians (as we know them) final outing, and for the foreseeable future, my last MCU film, I was immensely satisfied. My one gripe is Adam tho. I think he could’ve been done better. Other than that, I’d gladly give this movie a 9/10, and it’s definitely the best MCU movie since No Way Home 👍
@@brucecrawford_17 I dunno if Deadpool 3 looks bad then this will be. I hope not, but until then it does look like this will be my last MCU movie. Everyone I cared about in this franchise has had their journey complete or story finished. Maybe there’s still more like with Spider-Man and the Guardians, but I’m fine with where they left each franchise. And Shang Chi to me will just be that random spin off that happened after Endgame, and this movie and the last two Spidey movies are epilogues. I can’t find my self to care for any of the new characters or progressing arcs (imo they did Wanda dirty, Hulk too, I don’t wanna keep seeing the destruction of those characters). So yea unless Deadpool 3 looks good this is my last MCU film 👍
@@brucecrawford_17 Blade is sounding like a production disaster so far. Besides the Snipes one is amazing, so I can always just stick with that. Fantastic Four… even in the comics they were never really my thing. Much less the movies. We don’t even know where that movies going yet, and atp I can’t blindly hype myself up for Marvel. I still remember a time when I was hyped for Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder. Yikes. Like I said, I really can’t see myself caring. And if I don’t care, I don’t watch 🤷♂️
@@brucecrawford_17 nope. If Tobey and Andrew show up I’ll just search up the cameos. Now if I hear She Hulk, Ms Marvel, Captain Marvel, Cassie, Strange, Wanda, and all the several other heroes sticking around getting genuinely interesting, worthwhile, entertaining arcs and conflicts, maybe, as that’s the gold of the Avengers movies. These characters coming together with their internal conflicts and personal journeys to fight one big external threat that is the central story that’s been built up to that point. But looking at Marvel’s current track record from my opinion… yea… I 110% doubt that’s gonna happen or feel earned in these next Avengers movies. Oh and imo they’re doing a very poor job of setting up Kang.
Star Lord repeatedly saying “face off” during the movie and then the high evolutionary’s face actually getting ripped off reminded me a lot of the Breaking Bad season 4 finale
The most heart breaking and gut wrenching sentence I’ve hear in a mcu movie was in this movie. It was when rocket was in what I assume heaven/afterlife and his friends are there and they say we are all flying now the sky is pretty something like that and rocket just goes “can I join now ?” And lylla at first goes “yes”. But then says “but not now, you don’t realize but the story has been all you” James Gunn really pulled the heartstrings and I literally almost teared up
I would argue that the High Evolutionary is shrieking and losing his shit so much because he’s not used to being challenged. Nobody is able to lay a finger on him except for Rocket and the Guardians at the end. We saw what Rocket did to his face. When confronted with going up against the only person who ever wounded him, and when his plans start to fail for the first time he starts to unravel as all egotists do.
To me my favorite moment of the film was when nebula confronted Gamora and Gamora said something about her being more important because she’s family, and nebula tells her that rocket is family too. Seeing nebula grow to become part of the family has been really awesome.
Two things real quick. The scene where Rocket is about to enter the afterlife really got me. It was emotional and hurt me to my core. Rocket has always been my favorite Guardian. Another thing I realized was that nobody died. That's more surprising to me than any character death would've been. I like that they all lived, they just went their own ways. Loved the movie. 9/10
Love every single characters in this movie. Nebula and Mantis especially got a lot of development. Nebula becomes the mother of the team where Gamora used to be. Mantis not even the insecure and shy woman that we saw previously, she's now brave enough to stand up to people (especially when Nebula was insulting her and Drax being the liability of the team)
I thought an especially gut-wrenching scene was after Lylla died, Rocket's other friends tried to get him to leave with them now, but Rocket was too devastated and he attacked the High Evolutionary's men, which resulted in the deaths of Rocket's other friends. Also Rocket's scream when Lylla died is just one of the best MCU acting moments, period.
The love between Rocket and Lylla is the sweetest and saddest thing I've seen in a long time. Their reunion and kiss was so satisfying and that they'll meet again
@@syntheticreality549 hey man I had tried to reply to the one you sent. Long story short, the commenter of that comment had replied to me and we were having a respectful discussion until the guy just up and decided his point was proven and deleted his replies. It seemed unnecessary so I asked him why he did it on his comment. Then he went and deleted that comment 💀 guy was so passionate on proving Guardians wouldn’t be my last MCU film lol I can’t with the MCU fans anymore 🤣 but it wasn’t you just wanted to clear that up you’re chill 👍
I think the reason Adam Warlock does what he does in the third act is because he’s confused after his mother dies. At the beginning they say he was prematurely removed from his cocoon
I like the little distinction in Star-Lord’s character. When they’re getting the info on Rocket, he’s all about not killing anybody. But when he’s on the ropes inside of High Evolutionary’s base, he tells Groot TWICE to “Kill everyone!” I love that piece of subtle character design
Or how he commits to killing the dude who looks like Gluttony from FMA (idk remember his name). I thought he was just faking him out, until they hit the ground and I saw his dead body.
Shawn hit on a point I've pondered too. Most MCU films either give us a sympathetic or compelling villian. The High Evolutionary was neither - he was a bad bad man who you wanted to see lose and suffer while doing it. It was like a MCU Dolores Umbridge.
1:13:33 The name of the painting they're referencing here is called "The Creation of Adam". So it totally fits with this being the moment Adam becomes a Guardian!
the Drax and mantis relationship can be explained in one quote. "you and your partners relationship doesn't have to make sense to anyone besides you an your partner" just replace the word partner with friendship and thats drag and mantis's relationship.
I almost lost it when Rocket sees his friends in the afterlife. The line that got to me was 'can I come' and 'Yes, but not yet! You still have a purpose!!' SOOOO good and potent with emotion!!
Man. I almost cried when they really tried to make us think Rocket died and we got the heaven sequence and then I almost cried again when Yondu popped up for 5 seconds to motivate Kraglin. I’m honestly so torn whether I want to show this film to my gf because of all the animal cruelty. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 was so satisfying for me and easily make the GOTG trilogy my favorite in the MCU.
I feel like 3 important things you missed which I felt were incredibly powerful were 1) Kraglin seeing the image of his friend and mentor right after honoring his legacy, 2) Rocket with the new Guardians team playing the original song from all the way back to Guardians 1, "Come and Get Your Love", which is how all of this started and how it also ends, and 3) Groot's final words of the movie, where it's set up from the very first movie, he cannot say anything other than "I Am Groot", which is why the "We Are Groot" works so well at the end of Guardians 1, but the fact he actually speaks at the end of this one makes it so amazing, because after all this time, he only says one thing in english and it's how much he loves his family. Powerful stuff
Yeah, I'm not sure if you were implying this, but I'm pretty sure we could hear "I love you guys" because we have spent so much time with groot, so now we can understand him like the rest of the Guardians can.
Yeah think you missed the mark on groot. He didn’t speak our language, it was more because we as the audience have spent so much time with the character that at the end as a payoff we were able to understand him. They hinted that with Gamora understanding him by the end of the movie and as you saw when Groot said that no one flinched.
@@austincarlson9270 I did not think about it that way, but that makes more sense. I interpreted it as an expanded version of "We Are Groot", where just for a little bit, he speaks in our language just to show how much he cares about his family. Thanks for clarifying! Still, it's a big moment that I felt Sean missed
They rlly tricked us into thinking like half of them were gonna die😂 James Gunn is so good with characters, everybody gets a moment to shine in this one. Rocket's backstory is absolutely devastating and that hallway fight scene was beautifully shot. Once again, the soundtrack slaps per usual🔥 DC is in rlly good hands
This was my third most anticipated of 2023, and it’s currently my third favorite movie of the year. This was a truly great conclusion to these characters that have meant so much to me. It’s a movie that has all of James Gunn’s humor and mean streak, but it also has everything that made me love these characters in the first place by celebrating them for who they are. It’s a very dark film, but it’s also very uplifting by the time you get to the end of the film. There were a couple of elements that were a bit clunky, but they didn’t bother me all that much. I’m seeing the movie again tomorrow, and I’m hoping I love it just as much as I did when I saw it yesterday. I’m pretty sure this is where I’m going to leave the MCU. Not on a frustrating note or an underwhelming conclusion. I’m leaving it on when I was reminded why I loved this franchise in the first place.
It was my 8th most anticipated and it’s currently my 4th favorite. I think on rewatched it might even make it to number 3 👍 (ofc that means rewatching John Wick, Mario, and Suzume and seeing how I feel about them on rewatch lol). Glad to see you liked it man!
Just got done rewatching Guardians 1 after seeing GoTG 3. I remember the first time I saw GoTG, I loved it so much, I snuck in to watch it again. There weren't any seats open, so I just stood in the back. That's how freaking amazing I thought it was. I really forgot just how good that stretch of movies was. I mean we're talking The Avengers, Winter Soldier, and GoTG all within 2 years of each other. It's kind of sad how even the "good" marvel movies today don't live up to phase 2.
I personally think seeing the full story all together makes the other two films even better. I know you aren’t the biggest fan of Guardians 2, but I hope you’re able to see a lot of the plot points set up in that film finally completed. It feels like the story came full circle and I love that. What a ride!
When Gunn asked Stallone to voice King Shark, he didn’t think he would do it but Stallone replied “Anything for you, brother” So yeah, I would guess they’re already good friends.
Idk if it was the same for anyone else, but one of the places I was crying the hardest was when the whole team just dogs the crap out of the High Evolutionary. Just like a "you don't get to mess with our family"
Absolutely. Especially cos i was already crying from the bit before with rocket saving the babies. And then saying rocket raccoon and then the beat down. So cathartic
There were so many moments in this movie where I had goosebumps and I felt moved. This movie gave the guardians a perfect and quite happy ending, and I appreciate that so much. Despite the happy ending, I still left the theater feeling sad because this is the last guardians film. This movie was so frickin good, and I’m here the next morning thinking about it which is not something that has happened in a while for MCU movies. I want to feel this more. This is what the MCU is. I loved this movie.🙌💯 (Thanks Sean for letting your comment section be the place where I talk about movies)
While I've been pretty burnt out on superhero movies in the last few years and drifted towards indie and prestige films, I can't deny the impact the original Guardians films had on me growing up. I saw Vol. 3 last night and it reminded me what it felt like to truly enjoy and lose myself in a Marvel movie, hitting me with a level of emotional depth and maturity I would expect from a different genre and target demographic. While I felt slightly underwhelmed leaving the theater, it hit me when i started crying driving home, thinking about all the memories and how much the film provided a carthisis for how much I've changed. This trilogy will always have a special place in my heart and depending on how it sits this could be my favorite MCU movie period. While it definitely wasn't perfect, it provided the satisfying high note to end on; and after this, I think I'm finally ready to say goodbye to the MCU, because it'll never be as good as this.
I want to be done with the MCU so I won't disappoint myself in the future, but I have some glimmering hope that Fiege can get his shit together and create a functional Marvel universe in the future.
39:40 I absolutely loved how they portrayed survivors guilt not only with rocket but with Peter. Survivors guilt is a real thing and it's really hard to not only deal with but just wantch in general
An emotional farewell, I was on the edge of my seat the entire movie. This movie will make you cry, it will make you laugh, it will make you cry some more. It’s been an honor.
The fact the original Guardians went their separate ways to find themselves personally was a very satisfying conclusion without needing to kill any of them off. I felt like if any of the OG guardians died, with all the other dark themes going on, it would've been too far in cruelty. I'm glad they got a happy ending while still closing out their journey as a team.
I really loved this movie. Loved that the tone FINALLY felt balanced. The humor was there but when it was time to get serious they never ruined it with a dumb joke. This is really what we’ve been wanting and they delivered. A fantastic trilogy to easily some of the best characters in the entire MCU run. Also loved not only Rockets arc but even Peter’s with him realizing that his Gamora is gone and making peace with it, I’m glad marvel didn’t force that relationship with the New Gamora
Imma be honest here. I thought in the last scene where Quill looks like he’s gonna die in space, I thought Gamora was gonna go out there and save him with his head piece like he did to her in the first Guardians movie. I thought that’d be a nice way of Gamora accepting of this new family that she isn’t familiar with but they still love her. Also, where was Quill’s headgear and jets boots(idk what to call them) from the first two Guardians movies, IW, and Endgame? Kinda coincidental that he doesn’t have them for this movie so it would make sense for the final scene to look as if he’s gonna die.
regarding the headgear, it got destroyed near the end of volume two and i think what happened is that the russo brothers included it in the avengers movies not realising or caring but gunn wanted to keep it destroyed for this third movie, so he somewhat retconned it back into being destroyed. thats just speculation though
Can't recall if you touched on it but that one shot hallway fight scene might have been the best Marvel action scene since The Winter Soldier. A few nitpicks aside, it was so refreshing to be sitting in a theater with a good audience and watching a great marvel film. Brought me back to the phase 2&3 glory days of Marvel. Can't wait to see what Gunn does with DC IP.
Watched it last night, my goodness it was just gut-wrenching. The most emotional MCU movie thus far, a perfect ending to a trilogy. Not even remotely irritated that none of the guardians died, it was a really REALLY good movie, you don’t even need to be massively invested in the MCU to cry watching this. Adam Warlock, to me, was done perfectly. My issue with most of the recent MCU entries are that they try and shoehorn an extra new character in there that doesn’t feel overly natural. Having Adam be in the movie, while posing a real threat in some instances, but also not always showing up or stealing time away from the other characters. Overall, top 5 MCU movies, perfect trilogy ending, fighting back tears multiple times. So happy this was a brilliant film.
High Evolutionary was obsessed with the fact his creation surpassed him and also had the capacity of creative thought . It’s poetic with accents of moral theology . I actually liked the evil step mother of it all regarding his performance.
@@scruffd0g193 you will love rocket all the more after this. interesting, now i remember it, I thought and commented on a trailler video that they'd do an afterlife scene with Lyla, and I was right. i said though it would be a final fight scene with Lyla teaming up with a badly injored Rocket, then helping him with one last burst of energy to win the day with the other guardians then Rocket dies and Lyla then is his guide across the bridge. It didn't happen quite that wayin the actual movie , but wow how they did it.
I loved this film 9/10 definitely my third favourite MCU film. Teared up when Rocket almost died probably shows how much I care for his character. Loved his backstory felt that present day Rocket felt a bit bland compared to his other appearances that’s my only complaint of the movie though. The rest of the guardians were all great and as good as usual. Mantis has definitely grown on me with this and Guradians Holiday special. Loved how he managed to end of everyone’s character arcs without killing anyone off. The villain was purely evil which I loved. Can’t wait to rewatch this!
I completely agree. I think the High Evolutionary is easily the best villain inside of the 3 GotG films and managed to arguably have the best ending of any MCU film. If you don’t mind me asking what are your top 2 MCU films.
I'd love to see a Ravagers TV show with Stallone and Zoe Saldana leading the way, and Stallone himself is a big enough draw to make it easily the most watched Marvel show on Disney Plus. Unfortunately it's the longest of long shots that'll happen. But I love the rag tag stuff and those guys fit the definition perfectly.
He's not though I would never watch a show about the Ravagers unless it was actually quality. I'm not gonna watch something just because of a big name actor.
@@notTroddn I mean alot of people watched friggin Tulsa King just because Stallone was the lead. Seriously the man has an all time great commanding screen presence, you might not watch a Ravagers show just for that but you're just one person in a world filled with Stallone fanatics. Not to mention the built in fan base of the MCU.
Rockets final flashback where he sees all his die in front of him is probably if not one of the best scenes in the entire film. The showrunners managed to brilliantly make it dark and heartbreaking at the same time. This whole relationship between the 4 animals is now one of my favorite talking animal friendships as of right now, even though they didn’t get that much screen time. It made me cheerful but yet tear eyed at the same time.
This movie was a masterpiece and so emotional. I loved it so much. The movie made me cry a lot, but the scene that made me cry the most was when Lylla got killed. Rocket just saved her, she was so happy, and then she got killed right in front of Rocket and his reaction is so sad. I couldn’t stop crying 😭
1. Absolutely loved this movie, hands down the best Guardians movie and best MCU movie since Endgame 2. Love your shirt Sean, I have that exact same one!
Very good point that the final credits scene was probably supposed to feature Kang but they edited it out because of the Jonathan Majors drama. Really wish that would've happened. Would've been a perfect ending to the best Marvel movie since Endgame. Instead it wound up being like "huh? That's it?"
I took the credit scene of this movie as he’s now domesticated. It’s nothing grandiose because the grandiose thing on display is that he’s now just living an average human life. If there was a Kang connection there then that would be awesome to see or hear about but James Gunn also said he wasn’t concerned with anything beyond what he wanted to do with the guardians. I’m sure Star Lord will come back in something like The Marvels but I think he’ll come back in The Kang Dynasty and, for sure, Secret Wars. I can see his grandparents being affected or killed by a Kang variant when they invade earth 616, specifically the centurion and Star Lord going to the avengers afterwards and calling Rocket and the guardians to come to earth to help fight Kang, especially now that they have two super powerful people, Adam Warlock and Phyla Vell, on the team and they’ll need all the power they can get to fight Kang
Adam was literally made, not born, and he just came out of his cocoon. This makes him like a literal child. He is definitely written correctly and that way on purpose. He is destined to evolve to become one of the most powerful marvel characters. I think he was very much needed in this film, it starts his story.
I feel like Adam warlock, if he shows up in other movies will go through sort of an arc. As they said he had the mind of a child he’ll sort of grow up throughout the movies and then become an important character in the later movies
When Rocket started screaming because lylla was dead...I felt that. In 2019 when I had a bad acid trip I thought my dad died and had a very similar scream. James nailed this movie.
I read your description and I can’t believe it’s been 6 years since the last Guardians movie. I really liked this movie and I thought it wrapped up the characters well. I felt the pacing was a bit off which affected me from loving it. I bet if I watch all the films over again then I think I will like it more. I am going to miss these characters.
Couple thoughts and 1 suggestion for everyone (in general): 1) (my suggestion and most important for Marvel movies) = Try to skip the trailers. Try your best not to watch any of them and to avoid social media talk about these movies. The reason is, while some do trailers well, Marvel does an awful job with them. I do NOT want to enter a movie feeling like I've already seen it, and I don't want things to be placed in a trailer, but it's out of context because they need to avoid spoiling everything. I stopped watching all Marvel trailers after Eternals, and have enjoyed most of the movies since, mostly because I didn't know what to expect. Especially No Way Home, I had NO IDEA Garfield and McGuire were going to be in the movie as I didn't have social media or trailers spoil that for me, so I got to experience that live and it is an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. Try it if you can, because let's be real, most of ya'll, like me, are going to see the movie anyway, we're too invested at this point. 2) Every Marvel movie can't be Endgame. Many of these recent films have been dissected negatively, but we're in a transition where they're trying to find the next destination while finishing off arcs for the original franchises (clearly). Give Marvel time, they'll get it up and going again. 3) ROOT ROOT ROOT for James Gunn! The more successful he is in the DCU, the better quality films we will get in the MCU, because NOTHING kicks your a$$ in gear quite like competition does. Dunn did a masterful job here, and if he did this with all the red tape Marvel puts up on their movies, IMAGINE what he's going to be able to do at the DCU when he's the one running the show. I am super pumped for what is to come in the DCU now, and it will force Marvel to step their game up
Am I the only one that who got emotionally wrecked because of the trailer? That clip of Rocket and Lylla hugging made me go in expecting at least a brief reunion of old friends.. Then the scene came but in a flashback making me instantly realize she was about to die. Hit me that much harder because of that..
I just watched it for the second time and was blown away again. It was an amazing send-off to the best MCU franchise, and it surpassed my expectations. Glad I can say something positive about a Marvel movie again…
Never cry at movies. But GOTG 3 got me 9 times. Sad cries. Happy cries. Bittersweet cries (the end dance sequence). James gunn manages to make u cry over a tree and a raccoon dancing. I was crying cos of how rocket finally was happy. But i was so sad knowing we might not see these buddies again
On your theory with Kang originally being in the movie, I believe James Gunn said that he wanted to avoid tying into bigger events and just wanted to focus on the Guardians. I also believe, don't quote me on this though, that Gunn stated this BEFORE the Jonathan Majors situation.
It’s a movie that I left and it had me thinking of the many emotional and impactful moments. That’s only happened with the last 2 avengers, no way home and Wakanda forever in the last 10 years of the MCU for me. You felt you went on a journey with these guys since guardians 1 and when they separate you felt it too.
James Gunn definitely spoke to Rocket indirectly through this film with that near death flashback with Lyla. That was meta but didn't take me out of the moment, it still hit beautifully.
This should've been example for the MCU small franchise: 1. A trilogy for solo film like this should've been standalone. This trilogy proof that could work. We don't need everything has to be related to the MCU. Save that for the team up movie and the post credit scene 2. Let the directors do their own thing. Sure, you can stop them when they get too far (looking at you Taika Waititi) but please let them give their own flavour to their own movies That way, we can get a director movie in the MCU franchise not just another MCU movie that created by MCU machine.
For a lot of casuals such as myself, a lot of people won’t realize that it’s one of his buddies and wife that got casted so it won’t distract people who don’t know. It didn’t take me out of the movie or distract me at all
I was soooo emotional during all of the runtime! The scene where Peter refuses to let go of Rocket and brings him back to life broke me to pieces)) This movie has a heart) And it's something to treasure)) I love the main message from James Gunn about found family and power of real friendship) It has no woke stuff! And its a Huge win))Gunn really pushed all the boundaries) Certain scenes are just horrifying) It was so bold) Especially for Marvel) Spoilers ahead! The whole advertising for the movie revolved around one of the Guardians dying) And it seemed kind of strange when I finished the movie) It felt like it was missing this tragic moment in the end) I think James Gunn was told not to kill any of the Guardians)It just felt like James intended to give a heroic sendoff to Quill, but was confinded by contract) Because Kevin needs to put Starlord into other projects) Personally, I think that the ending with Peter actually dying, while guardians frantically try to save him, would be poetic) The perfect ending for me - Rocket taking up the mantel of a captain in order to show his love and gratitude for Peter, so the Guardians would continue to live on) The last scene would be all the Guardians dancing to Peter's favorite music, trying to hold back the tears)) I just don't like that Marvel doesn't let go of the characters for good to cash in later) It would be so much more impactful)
Love the comparison of the guardians films use of music to musicals comparison! (I strangely never thought of it in that way before but now that I do it’s kinda brilliant!) Also great review good points throughout;)
I think the dance scene at the end and rocket's near-death experience where he sees his mates again might be in my top 5 MCU scenes ever. 1. Easily Cap lifting the hammer (Endgame) 2. Portals (Endgame) 3. Rocket Seeing his mates again (GOTG3) 4. The Dance Scene (GOTG3) (Rocket screaming with joy and Drax dancing was the cherry on top) 5. Tony's Monologue (I Love you 3000 Speech) (Endgame)
The only negatives I had were: Adam Warlock didn’t get enough screen time The sound track wasn’t as strong as previous movies but all the good songs were used in the first 2.
I saw that Adam Warlock complaint but honestly for being a secondary antagonist in the movie, he had more screentime than I thought he would based on people's opinions
I was fine with what they did for Adam warlock especially because will poultry does a good job with the screen time he’s given, as well as it makes sense why he’s like that because of how goofy the sovereign are as a whole😅. I get why someone wouldn’t like him that much though
Honestly my main issue with the movie was that one of the Guardians didn’t unalive the high evolutionary in the end. I know rocket was trying to show he’s better than him, but some villains are truly evil and just need to get popped right there. Especially by someone he tortured. Like this guy tortured millions of animals and kids because he though he was a god, why didn’t rocket just blast him. It would still make sense for their characters. It’s not like they’re the most noble individuals, although they are heroes. I just feel like some deserve to get whacked on screen and the high evolutionary was def one.
I haven't watched the full video yet, but I had a few issues with the movie that ultimately effected my thoughts leaving the theater: Is it just me, or was a lot of the dialogue (Mostly Peter's dialogue) really bad and cheesy? From Drax saying "pick on someone your own size" to Adam Warlock, or the countless times Peter would say "We have to save our friend" with a straight face. I also feel like Nebula became super angry at times out of no where, mostly at Mantis. Peter's dialogue genuinely made my friend and I laugh out loud at how bad it was. I do want to applaud him for his delivery on the line "More than you'd know." when talking to Gamora after she said "I bet it was fun" or something like that in the end when they were going their separate ways. His delivery on that line hit like a truck, even harder than when he was about to die a few minutes before this scene lol. (I didn't get the lines exactly right because I simply don't remember the lines exactly, but it was a good moment) I also hate the direction action scenes are going in modern superhero movies (I seriously hate the new camera angle they use for flying characters when it shows them from the front. The Batman started this, and it was also in Black Adam, and now they used it here for Adam Warlock. I think it just looks way too goofy). The action in this movie, mostly the beginning Adam Warlock fight, was so close-up and fast paced with camera cuts every 1-2 seconds that I could hardly tell what was going on. It's like they're trying too hard to show the impact of each hit in a fight but it severely ruins the experience as the viewer (In my opinion). I think making hits look and feel more powerful and realistic, but the constant cuts were so bad in this fight in particular. I think Drax was a highlight in this movie. His development and especially Nebula's comment in the end about him not being a destroyer, but a father, was really emotional. And seeing him dance with the kids in the end was such a nice moment. The High Evolutionary was also a really good villain. Also, people seem to have a problem with Adam Warlock's screentime, and after seeing the movie he got a lot more than I expected him to after hearing those complaints. I also don't really feel negative towards how he was portrayed as they did explain that the High Evolutionary extracted him from his cocoon prematurely. Overall, there were a lot of really strong moments in this movie, and I want to see it a second time to maybe get past the nitpicks I had, but the dialogue threw me out of the emotional immersion constantly. I was overall underwhelmed leaving the theater
Yesterday was my last day of High School. What a day, to see these characters I loved for half of my life get a happy ending brought me genuine tears of joy.
Sean thanks so much for this review! I'm self conscious about how my thoughts jump around and I move my hands or look away from the camera, but you have similar mannerisms and I feel like I'm on the right track😅 @26:45 I think Drax has always been coded as someone on the spectrum, he says what he's thinking because he may not understand it's inappropriate. He's oblivious to metaphors and some social cues. Has sensory issues ("MY NIPPLES!!😂) So I think he's always empathized with and cared for Mantis, despite him speaking to her the way he does. He even saves her at his own expense when Ego buries them all in GotG2!
Something I haven't heard anyone really talk about is how Lyla thought Rocket was wearing a mask when he wasn't and later it is revealed that the High Evolutionary was wearing a mask because he was ashamed of how he looked. Rocket was so ashamed of what he was until he confronted the High Evolutionary that he tried his best to mask his pain and denied that he truly was a Raccoon. Both Characters were ashamed of what they were. When the High Evolutionary's mask came off, he was humiliated, when Rocket's mask came off, he was liberated. It is literally one of the most poetic reveals I have ever seen.
Nice 👍 atm my list would go 1. Suzume 2. Mario (maybe after a rewatch or two it’ll go down) 3. John Wick Chapter 4 4. Guardians Vol. 3 loved all these movies

I agree with your Kang theory. I think Star Lords next film could be Eternals 2 cause of his connections to ego he could be involved with helping them.
High Evolutionary is top 10 MCU villains material.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is a pretty good movie. I like the team dynamic and Rocket's story was soild.
Rocket seeing his friends again in heaven genuinely had me tearing up. That’s one of the greatest Marvel scenes ever. His decision of “I’m done running.” was the icing on the cake.
That got me hard.
I cried so many times, I literally cried when Rocket found out he was a racoon.
@@BlobGorillaTag I could hardly breathe. It was so powerful.
I was in tears with Rocket nearly going to heaven. Shows how much these characters mean to me.
Yeah I thought he was going to die, but he had to come back and get his revenge!
I was a mess when Star lord shouted “I’m not letting him go!”
Seeing rocket on his death bed was heavy and seeing Lyla and rockets Fred’s get killed broke me.
i started to cry whenever Lylla told him it wasn't his time yet.
Same
When Rocket screamed at the moment Lyla died, I felt the pain and sorrow he had.
i love Lylla and Rocket so much. ever since the telltale games flashback, ouch. i've listened to the spoilers, the trailers, the non spoilers, and i'm still going to listen to the movie when it comes to disney plus with, hopefully audio description.
Triggering but beautiful in a weird way…
Life would be meaningless if we didn’t love.
Yeah, that was the very moment all our hearts broke.💔
I couldn’t imagine how much Rocket has gone through until this movie came out.
When Rocket cried when Lylla was killed, it was heartbreaking to see and hear. I think this is Bradley Cooper’s best performance in the MCU, and I believe, in my opinion, that his voice performance is Oscar worthy.
I agree, some sociopath in my theatre was laughing when the high evolutionary was mocking him crying
That part broke me
I think he would get an Annie nom. I think he actually will too.
@@papas-tater-tots My friend was laughing quietly. He still loved it though and though it was really sad. Just a reaction that happened
Fyi, Young Rocket was voiced by Sean Gunn (James Gunn's brother, who also plays Kraglin and does the mo-cap for Rocket)
That's the problem with these movies now, playing it safe with no one dying and teasing it so much
I absolutely HATE that and it drops the quality when the movie SAYS no one is safe, yet they stay safe in the most high stakes situations.....it's bad

I was thinking of the John woo action film. Awesome movie
@@Jacobmovietalk I love that movie
His face looked like a distorted version of red skull 😂
The most heart breaking and gut wrenching sentence I’ve hear in a mcu movie was in this movie. It was when rocket was in what I assume heaven/afterlife and his friends are there and they say we are all flying now the sky is pretty something like that and rocket just goes “can I join now ?” And lylla at first goes “yes”. But then says “but not now, you don’t realize but the story has been all you” James Gunn really pulled the heartstrings and I literally almost teared up
I did tear up, all the flashback scenes with the children animals broke me.
That's a meta line and in a beautiful way
You missed the "my beloved raccoon" line which was the kicker for me
Even star lord freaking out had me like he was about to lose another member of his family.
I thought he worked as a despicable villain that you awaited his downfall. He didn't need to be anything more
Wait that was Rocket that did that to his face?!

Huh, nice observation.
To me my favorite moment of the film was when nebula confronted Gamora and Gamora said something about her being more important because she’s family, and nebula tells her that rocket is family too. Seeing nebula grow to become part of the family has been really awesome.
Nebula has had a great character arc over the films and I also love her chemistry she has with the characters too
I think Nebulas being close to Rocket makes a lot of sense. They both survived the blip
I was absolutely sobbing with the whole “Rocket goes to heaven and sees his friends and then gets a second chance” scene, absolutely beautiful stuff
I lost it when the animals died.

I like the little distinction in Star-Lord’s character. When they’re getting the info on Rocket, he’s all about not killing anybody. But when he’s on the ropes inside of High Evolutionary’s base, he tells Groot TWICE to “Kill everyone!”
I love that piece of subtle character design

There were so many moments in this movie where I had goosebumps and I felt moved. This movie gave the guardians a perfect and quite happy ending, and I appreciate that so much. Despite the happy ending, I still left the theater feeling sad because this is the last guardians film.

But 2 of the OG Guardians did die
I really loved this movie. Loved that the tone FINALLY felt balanced. The humor was there but when it was time to get serious they never ruined it with a dumb joke. This is really what we’ve been wanting and they delivered. A fantastic trilogy to easily some of the best characters in the entire MCU run. Also loved not only Rockets arc but even Peter’s with him realizing that his Gamora is gone and making peace with it, I’m glad marvel didn’t force that relationship with the New Gamora
Man I enjoyed this one. James Gunn knows how to nail characters. A more menacing and compelling villain than Kang in way less time!
In the Comics, Adam Warlock saves Star-Lord's life and eventually becomes a Guardian. This has to be in the film adaptation, and James Gunn did it😊

Very good point that the final credits scene was probably supposed to feature Kang but they edited it out because of the Jonathan Majors drama. Really wish that would've happened. Would've been a perfect ending to the best Marvel movie since Endgame. Instead it wound up being like "huh? That's it?"
I haven't cried that much in a movie since the freaking green mile. I honestly have no tears left in me.
High Evolutionary had a similar evil plan as Thanos. He must have been a fan.
I feel like Adam warlock, if he shows up in other movies will go through sort of an arc. As they said he had the mind of a child he’ll sort of grow up throughout the movies and then become an important character in the later movies
Wow he didn’t mention Yondu showing up that was cool
When groot says “I love you guys” was one of the funniest moments for me
When Rocket started screaming because lylla was dead...I felt that.
Been waiting to hear your spoiler thoughts!!!
Couple thoughts and 1 suggestion for everyone (in general):
1) (my suggestion and most important for Marvel movies) = Try to skip the trailers.
The action scene that follows after Rocket said "I'm done runnin", is what got me pumped up and jumpin like crazy.❤
I cried like a baby when rockets friends were Murdererd
I loved how weird it got. The creatures designs were so great!
This should've been example for the MCU small franchise:
1. A trilogy for solo film like this should've been standalone. This trilogy proof that could work. We don't need everything has to be related to the MCU. Save that for the team up movie and the post credit scene
2. Let the directors do their own thing. Sure, you can stop them when they get too far (looking at you Taika Waititi) but please let them give their own flavour to their own movies
That way, we can get a director movie in the MCU franchise not just another MCU movie that created by MCU machine.
For a lot of casuals such as myself, a lot of people won’t realize that it’s one of his buddies and wife that got casted so it won’t distract people who don’t know. It didn’t take me out of the movie or distract me at all
bro groot is OP. And starlord really showed how smart he was in this one
Groot was his most powerful this movie, dude was a beast.
I do not cry in movies but the not destroyer but dad line almost got me
I’m glad these longer reviews do well for you… it’s become a ritual after big marvel movie for me to come and watch them to recap the plot!
And its a Huge win))Gunn really pushed all the boundaries) Certain scenes are just horrifying) It was so bold) Especially for Marvel)
Spoilers ahead!
The whole advertising for the movie revolved around one of the Guardians dying) And it seemed kind of strange when I finished the movie) It felt like it was missing this tragic moment in the end) I think James Gunn was told not to kill any of the Guardians)It just felt like James intended to give a heroic sendoff to Quill, but was confinded by contract) Because Kevin needs to put Starlord into other projects)
Personally, I think that the ending with Peter actually dying, while guardians frantically try to save him, would be poetic) The perfect ending for me - Rocket taking up the mantel of a captain in order to show his love and gratitude for Peter, so the Guardians would continue to live on) The last scene would be all the Guardians dancing to Peter's favorite music, trying to hold back the tears))
I just don't like that Marvel doesn't let go of the characters for good to cash in later) It would be so much more impactful)
I'm still processing the fact that it didn't went that way.
Thank you for always using time stamps on your long vids!
I wasn’t confused about Stallone at all, and thought he was there for the Spy Kids 3 era viewers hahahah.
Love the comparison of the guardians films use of music to musicals comparison! (I strangely never thought of it in that way before but now that I do it’s kinda brilliant!)
Also great review good points throughout;)
I broke down at every single flashback, and the scene of Rocket going to heaven ended me
Same and oh my goodness when Lyla got shot, that was the saddest moment of the entire MCU.
I think the dance scene at the end and rocket's near-death experience where he sees his mates again might be in my top 5 MCU scenes ever.
1. Easily Cap lifting the hammer (Endgame)
2. Portals (Endgame)
3. Rocket Seeing his mates again (GOTG3)
4. The Dance Scene (GOTG3) (Rocket screaming with joy and Drax dancing was the cherry on top)
5. Tony's Monologue (I Love you 3000 Speech) (Endgame)
The only negatives I had were:
Adam Warlock didn’t get enough screen time
The sound track wasn’t as strong as previous movies but all the good songs were used in the first 2.
I saw that Adam Warlock complaint but honestly for being a secondary antagonist in the movie, he had more screentime than I thought he would based on people's opinions
@@pixelizedpear he was teased in 2017 so I was expecting a bit more tbh
I agree, they used almost exclusively ‘70s music in the previous 2 but this one had a lot of newer songs and only like 4 from the ‘70s.
The soundtrack had flaming lips AND Faith No More on it. I was fantastic.
I honestly thought this was the best ending to a trilogy since Return of the Jedi.
Return of the King bro
(I didn't get the lines exactly right because I simply don't remember the lines exactly, but it was a good moment)
I also hate the direction action scenes are going in modern superhero movies (I seriously hate the new camera angle they use for flying characters when it shows them from the front.
The children in my audience cheered when the face was ripped off lol 😂
Sean thanks so much for this review! I'm self conscious about how my thoughts jump around and I move my hands or look away from the camera, but you have similar mannerisms and I feel like I'm on the right track😅
@26:45
I think Drax has always been coded as someone on the spectrum, he says what he's thinking because he may not understand it's inappropriate. He's oblivious to metaphors and some social cues. Has sensory issues ("MY NIPPLES!!😂)
So I think he's always empathized with and cared for Mantis, despite him speaking to her the way he does. He even saves her at his own expense when Ego buries them all in GotG2!
This was a really great discussion. I enjoyed your breakdown, and you highlighted a lot of the reasons why this film worked so well for me. Keep it up
Something I haven't heard anyone really talk about is how Lyla thought Rocket was wearing a mask when he wasn't and later it is revealed that the High Evolutionary was wearing a mask because he was ashamed of how he looked.
I liked this movie a lot. My ranking so far this year is #1 John Wick Chapter 4, #2 Guardians of the Galaxy 3, #3 Air.
Nice 👍 atm my list would go 1. Suzume 2. Mario (maybe after a rewatch or two it’ll go down) 3. John Wick Chapter 4 4. Guardians Vol. 3 loved all these movies
I think we didn’t need Adam Warlock but I’m also fine with how Gunn handled him. He’s a weird comic character and he’s overpowered.
