- What's the best sealer to use on wood bows? How do I get a glassy, professional finish on my selfbow? In this bow building video I answer those questions and more as we go through the finishing process on a little two piece osage self bow I recently finished. I'll talk about different grades of sand paper, steel wool, and some of the waterproofing oils and sealers I've used over the years to protect my longbows and recurves from moisture and wet weather. A good finish is important for the longevity of a wood bow and this video shows how I do it.

Thanks again and congrats on Alone, i havent got season 8 so i been skipping those videos lmao!! the hook side of your velcro makes good for a non slip strips on like brush hogs or steps or places you like some grip too ;)
Awesome work and great info , im a novice bow maker myself. At least I make my own bows as well for my close friends and any tips are great !
Great tutorial Clay. Thanks Jim Rodgers
Very welcome
I have the same kind I use mine for making axe handles it does last a good while
Thanks Clay!
You bet!
I just bought some of that exact same stuff a week but I bought the spray can kind. Hopefully it turns out just as good.
If you get good with the spray can technique and just do light coats, you should get a very nice finish. 3/0 steel wool between coats.
Top top top
I love that t shirt and i want one.
How do oil finishes like this work with snakeskin backed bows? Used Titebond III to glue my skins down.
Fyi Birchwood Casey, makers of Truoil, also sell a product called Genuine Oil. It gives a satin finish and looks real good. Simple to use. Seal the wood and apply Genuine Oil.
Cool, thanks
Great vid,,,, say I put 5 coats of tung on my bow, how long do I ned 2 let that dry b4 applying the spar coats
Thank you for the super speed up lol. Although... it might make for a nice asmr video lol. I’d sure listen to a drawknife do its work for at least a half hour lol. 😂
Can you use special varnish instead of bee wax for sealing it?
Is using the steel wool equivalent to using a burnishing tool?
Do you know about the fire hardening methods used by Shannonoutdoors? Its supposed to make white wood bows even superior to Osage bows
Great video you have help more then you know
🍻
Would you do this on sinew back?
Yes
where can i get that bench.? love your videos 🙏

Do you know anything about "The Massey Finish", if so please share. Thanks!
I don’t
@@clayhayeshunter Honesty, is the Best policy. Always. {Thanks, again for the Many fine presentations. Bow fishin' with a recurve?}
Do you need to let the bow dry after the application of acetone?
It dries instantly
can any oil replace a finnish
Does a "snakey" style bow offer more power??Because of the extra length of wood gained because of the waviness? Are they stiffer?
or is it mostly aesthetic??
Therefore no performance affects that I know of.
@@clayhayeshunter Hey thanks...You the man!
Ipe, Purpleheart, Bamboo can cause physical problems also. I'm sure there are probably others too.
Boisd'arc can be harmful if the dust is inhaled. The dust is like tiny fish hooks. If they ho into your lungs they dont come out. Hand sanding in a well ventilated place probably alright. But I'd think power tools without a mask or ventilator not good. Also, some people can have an allergic reaction.
Dusty shop, getting bugs and dust in your finish. Make your own wipe on poly 50/50 with water poly and mineral spirits. Wipe on, and dries so fast. Use a triple 0 steel wool or a brown bag to get the nibs out between coats. Dries in 15 mins, no bugs or dust, but you need a lot more coats.
Hola clay cuanto mide de largo tu arco cuando sales a cazar imagino que camino a tu lado saludos
How would things go if you sealed the bow two days after fire hardening?
I don’t se anything wrong with that.
....kinay.
I put duct tape on the back of my sand paper it makes it stronger and seems to last longer wont rip on you
Good tip
Be careful sanding a fiberglass wrap? Come on Clay. Not wearing a respirator sanding FRP is asking for lung damage.
Which is why I didn’t sand it. Always best to use a mask of some sort.
