  • The Edge - Hardcore to Jungle.
October 1992, The Eclipse was gone, The Edge was here.
A cutting edge hardcore club, and everything was being recorded. The tapes were legendary and influencing music worldwide.
Dreamscape, Amnesia House, Fibre Optic, Quest and Dance Planet staged massive events at The Edge.
The 1st all-night jungle event outside of London was staged at The Edge by Jungle Fever.
But the crowd had changed, the drugs had changed, and worldwide culture was again changed forever, and Coventry was at the centre of it all.
The Edge, where hardcore mutated and morphed into jungle/drum & bass.
    A Daylight Robbery Production.

Loved this place as the Eclipse was my 3rd home! 🔥🔥🔥🔥had some best nights of my life it was 1000% about the music.. the eclipse floors used to bounce too! The Edge was good at times too but missed the rawness & pioneering Eclipse (1st home was my actual home, 2nd was the Brunel Rooms Swindon) :) I always was and still are an original jungle-techno head!

These videos are fantastic guys, brings back some real memories. I used to live in Coventry and grew up going to the Eclipse, always started the night off at the three tuns beforehand. For me the early times at the Eclipse were the best before the dance music split into different genres. We had many good nights at the Edge too, but the music started getting quite dark and the friendly atmosphere of the Eclipse was disappearing. For me, that was when the happy hardcore scene kicked off and brought back the original happy vibe. Clubs like the Diehard in Leicester were amazing. The big events like Dreamscape, Helter Skelter would be running 2 main arenas to cater for the Jungle and Happy Hardcore crowd, good times.

Totally agree mate , I lived in Leicester at the time came to eclipse about 3 times, best club I ever went to, used to go rage, total kaos, diehard, sanctuary, milwaukees, institute, but the scene went dark and moody end of 94, stopped going
      Eclipse was best ever

I didn't like what they did to the balcony area with the change, before it was a great place to dance, hang and mong out sprawled on the floor, talking bollocks to the same friendly people you saw most weeks. It felt soulless without the manky sofas.
I only went to Edge opening night and a few weeks later, my body said enough is enough.
My vivid memories of Edge opening night are
    China Whites(man they were strong)
Ellis Dee track Rock to the max
The weird tv room on the ground floor
Big shout to anyone who remembers going to Soundhouse & Spinadisk

    Great series of vids.
I loved the moodiness. Spent my teen years travelling on the train from Hinckley to Cov, hanging out at banging tunes, visiting Hillfields for a scary purchase. Also loved the Que Club in Brum, that also had that vibe where you never knew what might happen. Good days.

...it became the Edge of the Eclipse. A natural planetary transition which also signalled the change towards a harder coke based inflence and a tougher darker, at times, sinister sound.
I feel it was the beginning of the end when 'steaming', gunshots and a national death of a raver, closed the doors...🌙

Can I say that I really love these high quality videos. It is about time we put the Midlands back on the map. I know London is important for our scene, but when you read some of the histories, you would think the scene was only about London, which it wasn't for those that know. We need to decentralise the scene from London and put the Midlands back where it belongs. We had such an important role to play in the early days.

Was the impact that Coventry had on the rave scene even mentioned as part of the City of Culture 2021? Whilst 2 tone was born in Coventry and agree it should be celebrated, what Amnesia House and the Eclipse did for the rave scene was monumental. I will never forget watching the Hitman and Her on tv when they went to Energy, that was a moment of pure culture clash. It is funny that even today, i am only now finding out what some of the tracks are that were being played at the time. We always relied on rave tapes from Bang-in tunes for our music supply but you had no idea what the tracks were.

If they hadn't changed the name, I doubt if most people would even remember it.

It's a shame Nev thought in hindsight, looking back that they should of gone down a different route like sasha and carl cox. That surprises me, I would of thought he was happy that they stayed to the roots, stayed true to the hardcore and jungle scene. Yeah there was more money following the trance and techno side but for me I'm grateful they didn't. Because the edge, eclipse, Bang-in Tunes. Was Hardcore!

Let's be honest. By the end of 91, the music was trash . That's not to say some great music was being played in 92, but that feeling of early 91 was gone, the atmosphere was just different, and the music was the reason behind it. Went to the Eclipse many times and by the end saw to many fights and moody pills going about it had had its day. Big up the Eclipse massive one love.

Yeah it was moody at times but the likes of Tango, Bukem, Randall, Fabio really played timeless tunes that were pushing boundaries and are still classics today.
Music policy dictated the crowd and the above werent embraced enough. Bukem was doing this then, I was there, the forefront of dnb was available just not grabbed.

Do you know why Coventry/south Birmingham was at the apex at this time ???
Because it was diverse multicultural and accepted the racist skinheads pf the 80s
Out of that came the twotone movement with alot of intregated cultural music the very racist very white football hooligan scene .the Zulu warriors of Birmingham City Football Club where the first fiirm of football holigans to intregrate black people .the eclipse again alot of cross multicultural influence.
