If you liked Vagabond you should definitely read "Musashi" by Eiji Yoshikawa, the book the manga is based on! It is absolutely amazing. It also portrays Sasaki Kojiro in a more interesting way than the manga did.
I recently just visited Iwakuni Castle the other day, and had no idea that Sasaki Kojiro was such a big part of the culture in Iwakuni! The bridge is beautiful, and the castle is as well, sitting atop the mountain. You can either take the trolley up, or you can hike up the mountain for about half an hour, it's a lovely spot in Yamaguchi :)
With a boat oar, a rock, some good distance, and of course, Mushashi put more mental pression with Kojiro. Like he purposely arrived late to the duel. Just to make Kojiro's nerves super tense and can easily fell from his anger. Mushashi knew that Kojiro is strong, so he used psychology, organization of things and his own surrounding to defeat his rival once for all.
Though I like Sasaki, I always considered him (like in the westerns) an upstart who wanted to go after all the famous gunfighters. Please dont get me wrong, he was phenomenal, but could be arrogant because of his young age. In the end, I have always favored Musashi because I read his book (Sho Rin No Go - The Book of Five Rings), the first time, when I was 10 yo. I admit the strategy part of the book was over my head, but after reading it many times later in life, I grew to understand its meaning far more.
just finished reading vagabond and was interested on what the actual is history is like and who won the battle between Sasaki Koujiro and Mushashi Miyamoto
Turning swallow strike is a strike required to have fast speed faster then a swallow as you have to strike almost simultaniously and strike from every angle that the swallow would try to escape from at least thats how the sasaki from the fate series explains it
The way I see it is, if all this is legend and the Kintaikyo Bridge was not standing during his era, there was the bridge nevertheless. So... He could’ve been standing on whatever bridge there was crossing the river and observing the swallows, thus creating his famous sword technique. Again, if all this is legend, the story could’ve changed over the eons to make it more romanticized. Just saying…
you mirror your katana, bring it down, and swiftly cut in a upwards direction almost veritcally. that was the swallow technique. simple but deadly. konnichiwa.

None of the film adaptations have ever shown him performing the “Swallow Tail” cut as depicted in the statues or the book.
During their fight, MUSASHI used his shadow and his back towards the SUN.

I believe that Kojiro was technically superior to Musashi, but Kojiro was killed because Musashi was tactically superior to Kojiro.
Indeed

You got the dates wrong: Musashi's duel with Kojiro took place in 1612, nowhere close to 600 years ago.
So what?! It’s still a fantastic story. Amazingly romanticized!
Musashi respected the long sword of Kojiro, that is why he made a sword from a boat oar.............and cracked Sasaki's skull with it.
you mirror your katana, bring it down, and swiftly cut in a upwards direction almost veritcally. that was the swallow technique. simple but deadly. konnichiwa.
