This live video shows The Police at The Omni Coliseum in Atlanta on 11-03-1983. Originally The Police wanted to release another concert, but were not satisfied with their 08-02-1983 performance. So Directors Godley & Creme filmed them again at The Omni in Atlanta, GA, USA on 11-02-1983 and 11-03 -1983. Some audience shots from the August performance were still used for the official release.
The Police's Synchronicity Tour ran between July 23, 1983 and March 4, 1984.
During the early dates, the band resided at a mansion in Bridgehampton, New York and were flown to the concerts. This was the band's final tour as a working unit and one of the highest-grossing tours of the 1980's.
"I was never relaxed," drummer Stewart Copeland recalled. "I had so much anxiety. And I know how crazy that must sound to people who do real jobs." Copeland did however cite the August 18 show at Shea Stadium as the peak of "Policemania": "Playing Shea Stadium was big because, even though I'm a septic tank (rhyming slang for 'Yank'), The Police is an English band and I'm a Londoner - an American Londoner - so it felt like conquering America."
The November 2 and 3 shows in Atlanta were filmed and recorded for a live album and DVD.
"Message in a Bottle" was released as the lead single from their second studio album, "Reggatta de Blanc" (1979). Written by the band's lead singer and bassist Sting, the song is ostensibly about a story of a castaway on an island, who sends out a message in a bottle to seek love. A year later, he has not received any sort of response, and despairs, thinking he is destined to be alone. The next day, he sees "a hundred billion bottles" on the shore, finding out that there are more people like him out there.
The song exemplifies the reggae rock/new wave style of early Police. It is composed in the key of C sharp minor with a chord progression of C sharp m9 - Amaj9 - B7-F sharp m.
According to the band's guitarist, Andy Summers, Sting had initially intended the guitar riff that "Message in a Bottle" is centered around for a different song. Summers said to L'Historia Bandidio in 1981: "Sting had that riff for a while, but there was another tune with it originally. He'd been fiddling about with it during our first American tour. Finally, he rearranged the riff slightly and came up with the song." Summers came up with, as Sting described, "lovely arpeggiated shiver" during the break prior to the third verse. Sting praised this addition saying, "He'd [Summers] do that - the song would be quite raw and he'd just add these lovely colors." The song was recorded at Surrey Sound Studios as part of the sessions for the Reggatta de Blanc album. Stewart Copeland's drumming, praised as his "finest drum track" by Summers, was "overdubbed [from] about six different parts."
The song was a massive success in Britain, becoming The Police's first No. 1 hit in the UK Singles Chart. The song also topped the charts in Ireland and reached No. 5 in Australia. Despite its popularity in the UK, the single only reached No. 74 in the United States.
"Message in a Bottle" is also a personal favorite of the members of the band. In addition to saying it was his favorite song in an interview with Jools Holland of the BBC, Sting described it as a "good song", and also said that he was "very proud" of it. Copeland said it was "one of our best moments in the studio and always great on stage." Summers described the track as a personal favorite in his book "One Train Later," and said, "For me, it's still the best song Sting ever came up with and the best Police track."
"Message in a Bottle"' is a good song. That can move me. I like the idea that while it's about loneliness and alienation it's also about finding solace and other people going through the same thing. The guy's on a desert island and throws a bottle out to sea saying he's alone and all these millions of bottles come back saying, So what So am I! I like the fact that the whole deal is clinched by the third verse. It makes a journey. - Sting, Q, November 1993

Just a castaway
An island lost at sea, oh
Another lonely day
With no one here but me, oh
More loneliness
Than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair,oh
I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle, oh
Message in a bottle
Oh, message in a bottle
Message in a bottle
A year has passed since I wrote my note
I should have known this right from the start
Only hope can keep me together
Love can mend your life
But love can break your heart
I'll send an SOS to the world

I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle
Message in a bottle
Message in a bottle
Message in a bottle
Walked out this morning
I don't believe what I saw
A hundred billion bottles
Washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone at being alone
A hundred billion castaways
Looking for a home
I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my

True!

Stewart’s snare sound is iconic in the drumming world

It is indeed ...
His fills are perfect!
And the hi-hat to :)
Always loved his ride work. Such an original. The Police were such a strange band to become so big. They’re almost like a band for musicians, yet they were the biggest band in the world for a bit there. Could never happen today.
Come on guys, let's not leave poor Sting out of the comments: Sting, you are so lucky to have been invited into Stewart's band.
lol ... c'mon now!
who is Sting????

Them two will never get along. Warring brothers in a past life. Warring brothers in this present life as well.
He looks like background extra from a Mad Max beyond Thunderdome scene as one Tina Turner's court waterboy servants, who just got pulled from the scene because he looked to silly
One of the all time great drummers and we have to watch a lady dance through the entire video.
Unbelievable work by Stewart Copland. Everyone just sounds great on this but the drums are just on a higher plane. Amazing performance.
+45 RPM No doubt, Copland was at the top of his game during this period. He just kills on this tune!
+MчstícRhчthmsLívє Nice to be in touch with someone who gets it.
Copeland absolutely beasted.on the '83 tour. He was consistently interweaving 3 different rhythm lines on every song- amazing.
i hear on this version when i m on youtube just to hear Stewart Great work!
I realize how lucky I am as i was in a police concert in 1983. I am not a music specialist but I was impressed by the drum on this track
Stewart Copeland has to be the most dynamic drummer ever. Dropping it to a whispering then building it to exactly where it needs to be at any given time. His drums sing the songs. Pure genius.
Absolutely
Me: thinking I’m going to see Stuart Copeland play some great drums

The Police were a great back up band for Stewart Copeland.
That guitar playing has the conisstency of water.... So clean as a guitar player Andy is definitely one of my top ten guitarists.
He’s good but Top 10 is pushing it
@@Jackmeehoff225like you would know that much to say so
Copeland plays with the energy of punk but with the finesse and sophistication of a traditional grip jazz player. Amazing.
Stewart Copeland was truly ahead of his time.
Literally and metaphorically 😅
Insane drumming
Welcome to the Stewart Copeland show ❤️❤️❤️
Not often a drummer is the highlight of a band but Stewart always has been for me. 🔑
It's when you see Copeland's live drumming that you realize how this drummer is amazing.
Not to discredit the excellence that is Sting and Andy Summers, but there is no denying how insanely hypnotic Stewart is on those drums riding the cadence.

No doubt that w/out Stewart the band would have been something far different! Thanks for commenting!
The Police was Stewart Copeland's idea.
Great drummers usually do, at least to those who know a bit about music. They're all great, but great drums set everything up.

Best , most iconic snare tone and sound in rock drumming- nothing touches that crack!
Jesus, that drum intro is worth the price of admission.
Those drums😮
2:58 sorry lady, that was only on the studio version.
Great catch! LOL!
Holy Christ! Stuart Copeland's drumming! As a one time percussionist...I just close my eyes and nod my head to the beauty coming off that man's kit. He is totally nailing this. Complete respect to the other two band members...but there are not many, if any, drummers that could have played that. That was sublime. He took the baton and ran with it....
he is using phenomenal dynamics and so accurate... I love that tight hi-hat sound with the Paiste 602s
All Police fans know and appreciate the real drumming genius of Stewart Copeland. But come on guys Andy is very underrated guitarist!
Yes, he's the reason I started playing again after a 13 year absence.
Marwan Bayoumi Andy is my hero
On this particular concert Andy´s guitar is poorly recorded. He´s amazing.
Not really. I have the original vynyl from back then, and the sound of the guitar is awesome. It must have been remastered in the 90s, just to follow fashion and pump the bass up to where it melts everything down. Poor choice.
You also have to appreciate that Sting is one hell of a bass player.
Sting made the Police famous, Stewart’s made it legendary and timeless.
Stewart Copeland is a monster on the drums
Sting: “Can you drum any faster, Stewart?”
Stewart”: “Hold my coffee ☕️”
This is why Copeland is one of the top influential drummers. His simple yet free spirited original approach to playing never gets old. That crisp, poppy bang is so attractive to the listener.
"His simple yet free spirited original approach to playing never gets old." He is a master at his trade!
Stewart Copeland is a non stop drum solo.

The lack of Copeland shots in this is a god damn crime....
The cameraman was announcing the free the nipple movement that will apper some years later....
Stewart Copeland is really amazing! The best drummer of the world.
Copeland’s drumming here is both brilliantly over-the-top and beautifully understated - an absolute masterclass in balance, energy and style. Amazing.
Yes it is! Fantastic drumming from start to finish.
This was the band at the top of their game. Copeland is in another league.
The crowd as a whole wasn’t giving this the energy it deserved
Sting: What tempo are we playing Message in a Bottle this evening?
Copeland: Yes
lol .........
Lol I realized that right away. The police were pissed at the drummer that night.

Stewart's unique style, using splashes, octobans and bells..his accents on cymbals, distinctive sound and energy makes puts him on a separate page.
The use of octobans in the live performances of Bring On The Night by Copeland is just insane, it sounds like the man literally has 4 arms. My favourite drummer, I've caught grief from Peart fans for saying so, but I like Copeland better.
Peart is a great drummer. I enjoy his drumming quite a lot. However, Copeland is just a different drummer and his style is just unique. He is my all time favorite what can I say.
MoC He actually attended the last Rush concert
What a guy!
Yes man speed of him immense

The opening and the fills...my God.
Stewart is a legend, Andy is one of a kind, and Sting is a genius. What else can be said?
underrated comment
Lots!
Yes me.
As a kid, this live performance by Copeland was what made me play drums seriously.
That snare sounds crisp.
Two words... Andy.Summers. Don’t get me wrong, Copeland is the backbone of this group and his parts on this mix in particular are otherworldly, but my goodness, Just imagine if Andy hadn’t come into the picture. To me, Andy was the key ingredient for this band to soar into the stratosphere of stardom, and he rightfully deserves credit for that. His playing, although very minimalistic, is unreal to listen and play to, and that telecaster... what a beautiful sounding and versatile instrument 😍🎸🔥.
I agree! Andy Summers was the perfect guitarist for The Police. I can't imagine The Police without Andy Summers. His playing was very minimalistic but beautiful tones and textures came out of his telecaster. He ROCKED in a very regal way. I love his playing!
Awesome. People maybe forget how massive The Police were. On a par with the beatles in terms of stadium filling and fan base admiration. They were absolutely huge. Stuart Copeland was just the most immense drummer. All three of the trio were proper hold your own ground masters....but Stuart Copleland's drumming is very hot wired. The early part of this video shows Stewart Copeland totally on fire...extremely quick flourishes, off rhythm, on rhythm, he is a power house and is always bang on the timing. Perfection. Sting's voice is huge...What an immense sound from just three men.
Early 80s splashes, crashes, accents and octobans, Stewart was a groundbreaking artist.
He sure was! Thanks for a great comment! -:)
The best thing about getting into the police? Stewart Copeland, and seeing how many other people love Stewart Copeland too!!! That’s HIS band!!!

Amazing guitar playing by Andy Summers. Sure Copelands drums are great, but Andy imo is what makes this song memorable. Such a shame he never gets the credit he deserves. Kudos to Mr. Summers for that golden riff.

Stewart Copeland. The. Best. Drummer. Ever.
I'd put him up there with Billy Cobham.
No offense to the other guys but Stewart Copeland steals the show 🥵
Yes and No. Gordon made the perfect songs, Andy was a tier1 guitar player BEFORE The Police. The Police existed and continue being relevand even without playing together mostly cause Gordon, Stew just made it exciting for mainstream-taste people. It was always interesting for musicians tho.
@@demian1173 but realize you are replying to a drummer fan boy oblvious to anything outside of stews drumming, For any drummer to say no offense to the other two members of the police quite simply illustrates a childish immature drummer or someone that is starting it. I’ll be honest, I’m not a HUGE Police fan but Stewart Copeland is my favorite drummer of all time and inspires me to keep playing and learning every time I listen to him. His playing is so unique and instantly recognizable, and he brings so much energy to the kit every time he plays that it’s hard not to get wrapped up in his performance and focus entirely on him despite how talented Sting and Andy Summers are (I’m obviously biased because I’m a drummer before anything else but still, I mean come on)
