Engine and transmission gear oil change in a GY6 150cc Chinese scooter

- You should change the oil in your scooter every 1,000 miles or once per year, whichever comes first.
The engine takes 0.7 quarts of 10W-40 full synthetic motorcycle oil Make sure to buy 4-stroke oil.
The transmission takes 0.1 quarts of 75W-90 gear oil.
It's ok to mix used gear oil with used motor oil. Take your old oil to your local auto parts store to get it recycled. If you don't have that option, contact your local landfill. They will have a place to dispose of hazardous waste.

0:51 fill the engine oil
1:34 transmission final drive oil change
2:01 fill transmission fluid
Quick tip I learned. Always remove fill plug before the drain plug first. Any type of motor
Just in case the full plug is stuck or breaks in some way
Thank you for the oil change too
Nice, straight forward how-to without a bunch of fluff, or crappy music. Thank you...
I came for the scooter tutorial, I stayed for the Rav4 transformation. You sure do like a challenge Paul!
Thanks for watching! The RAV4 still needs a lot of work, so I'll be making more videos soon.
Very helpful, esp bc nobody near me works on these! Ride safe!
Thanks for the video. Appreciate the time you took to shoot and share the video.
Thanks scooped a ruckus clone off a acquaintance for cheap that never really used it and let it sit all pandemic .. broken front brake cylinder and had to extract a broken off manifold bolt and buy a exhaust tip.. change all the fluids and she a runner. Thanks for the vid
Great video, straightforward. Thank you
Great video and thanks for showing the product and price along with specific tips i.e. lean the bike this way, once gear oil is at a slow drip your good etc
Thanks for watching!
That has to be the easiest, cheapest oil change I’ve seen. That scooter is practically free transportation.😊
Excellent video, very well explained!
Thank you for the beautiful explanation, keep it up 👍😊
Why does the transmission oil need to be changed so often? I know gy6 engines don’t have oil filters + inevitably oil slowly slips into the combustion chamber or vice verse fuel slips in the oil pan over time so it needs replacing often, but the transmission gear oil doesn’t go anywhere and doesn’t get contaminated by fuel nor does it burn so why change it so often?
Thanks for the video! I didn't know you were not supposed to screw the oil dipstick after the refill, I was always wondering why do I put the right amount of oil, but the dipstick would indicate that it is overfilled haha
Yup. Mystery solved. I didn't know that for a pretty long time too.
NO! IT'S NOT DONE! Clean any oil contamination from your tyres, ASAP!
Next time you lean on a curve specially on a wet road you'll learn it painfully! ;-)
Thank you very much for this important information
I only removed the screen plug. Will that drain all the oil or do I need to drain it from the drain plug. Please and thank you
You'll get most of the oil out, but I recommend using the drain plug.
Very Much Appreciated.....Thank You I may actually have a chance of maintaining my own bike this time around......Of course I subscribed' lolol
Would using full synthetic 5w 30 in a 1985 water cooled 150cc scooter be ok or bad? I live in Florida and the scooter has over 6000 miles.
Synthetic oil is just fine. You could use a high mileage blend if you're concerned about oil leaks. Some scooters take 10W40 so check the specs for your scooter.
Should I use the 15-40 or 10w40
I got a 150cc Gy6 bike I got it straight piped you think that’s bad ? I haven’t messed with the jetting or carb at all bike has 6k miles I know people say it’s bad to not have back pressure but bike runs good just pops a bit when I let off the throddle
According to some videos I've watched about backpressure, it seems like on a 4 stroke engine it's not very important to have backpressure.
The design of the exhaust pipe can help the engine flow better, but it's more complicated with having the flow rate matched to the head.
The only thing you're hurting with a straight pipe is your ears, and making everyone within half a mile of you angry.
@@LabCoatPaul well I’m not sure if the bike is running lean or not I haven’t done anything to the carb or jetting it’s the way it is when I got the bike
Mine says use 15-40
What if you put motor oil in the gear box how long before your damageb something i don't have money for gear oil right now can it be a temporary fix
It's probably fine. My 2010 Honda elite 110 calls for 10w-30 motor oil in the gear box.
@@LabCoatPaul thanks
Can I use my car transmission oil for my scooter transmission gear?
Yes, as long as it's gear oil. You can't use automatic transmission fluid in a scooter.
What type of grease did you use for the O ring?
Any grease will do. Or just put a few drops of oil on it.
How comes transmission oil is a life long filling in my car but not in my scooter?
No fluid lasts the lifetime of a vehicle. "Life long transmission fluid" just means your transmission will break sooner. It's a bit of a scam by some car manufacturers. Fluid always wears out.
In most cars the transmission fluid lasts between 30,000 and 60,000 miles. A transmission that is sealed better, has a larger oil volume, and better cooling can extend the life of the fluid, but the fluid will wear out anyway. BMW's for example are throwaway cars, so at 100K miles the transmission fluid is definitely bad, but the whole car will blow up soon anyway so they tell you the transmission is "maintenance free."
In a scooter, I change the gear oil every time I change my engine oil just to stay organized. The gear oil actually lasts longer than the engine oil, but it's easier to do them together.
@@LabCoatPaul I see your point. But even you admit that transmission fluid lasts at least 30,000 miles. I wish a 139qmb would last that long. Therefore in a power restricted engine (in Germany only 2.8 hp) this would indeed mean lifetime filling in this case as there is almost no wear and tear to the oil.
@@receptayyip1410 Car transmissions also have 5 quarts or more of oil. A scooter has 0.1 liters of gear oil. It probably could last the lifetime of the scooter, but if it leaks even a little bit, you're running those gears dry.
Skip super tech it's like water. Other than that helpful videos
Hii paul can i use car engine oil 10w40 castrol magnatic for my gy6 ?
Yes. Motorcycle oil is required only on motorcycles with a wet clutch. Scooters have a dry clutch (not submerged in engine oil)
@@LabCoatPaul
i feared that car oil can do damage to scooter engine
Now do that on a trike
Can I use 15w 40 motor oil and 80w 90 gear oil?
Yes, that's ok to do.
@@LabCoatPaul also what is your opinion on full synthetic. I just picked up 10w40 and 75w90 both full synthetic, I noticed it runs a noticeably quieter and feels a tad bit cooler after a long ride. Heard it will cause leaking in the future but this scooter is also brand new at now 80 miles
@@sammymontano1202 Synthetic oil is just fine. Check out Engineering Explained: ruclips.net/video/pPFSR-2lhxY/видео.html
@@LabCoatPaul thank you!!
@@sammymontano1202 For brand new scooters you should use conventional to break it in then use synthetic blend. Yes it will cause issues like that if you don't break it in with conventional.
will 20w-50 work?
GY6 scooters take 10W40 oil. Yes, you can use 20W 50, but it won't flow as well if you use your scooter in cold winter weather.
@@LabCoatPaul it's ganna be summer here in Indiana, is it still ok?
