I miss Lisa. She's my age. A national icon in Canada. Went to Ottawa U like me. Haven't watched CTV National News since she left. Thank you Katie Couric for bringing this conversation to a wider audience, even though it was world wide news last August, 2022
You should know the night Lisa came on air, during our lockdown in Canada, and she told us all "LIVE" that she was letting her hair grow grey. In solidarity with all the women and her watching public. None of us could go to a salon or a barber shop during the lockdown. Nobody heard "on air" a complaint, and Lisa never mentioned to us that anyone at CTV had issues with her personal decision, at that point. Lisa made an executive decision about herself. When Michael Melling came aboard he was the one who swung the ax. There is a solid double standard between men going grey on camera, and women going grey on camera. It was an unfair move by CTV National News.
#CTV and parent company #Bell screwed up badly. Lisa LaFlamme has weathered her firing far better than the instigators behind it at the network and the parent company. To borrow words from a Bell's annual pr campaign raising money for mental health: #BellLetsTalk
I started watching Lisa in 2001, when she came to CTV for 2 yrs. doing the news on Canada A.M. She was a breath of fresh air. I live in Western Canada, however This morning show was national. (She always had a great head of hair, but her authenticity also shone through) I was also in a male dominated industry .. I started my career as a sales rep in 1980 @ 20 yrs. old. I found out AFTER I was hired (I spent 2 yrs. pursuing this career, and specifically w/ this co.) that I was the ONLY female of a 135 strong Cdn. Sales force. Lisa is our hero .. wish her well. She’s strong, as are you Katie. Thanks for this
I did vote with my remote control. I did write letters to Bell Media. I have not watched CTV National, nor CTV News Channel since Lisa LaFlamme's ouster. I have been, and continue to be with Lisa. She has been the most trusted news anchor, and national reporter on Canadian networks for a reason. She has more integrity in her silver locks , than those in the corporate office of Bell Media have shown.
Have not watched that new channel since her departure .it was ageism .Witch is also a form of Bullisum .I know way to much about how women over 50 are treated sign devastating .Proud of women for speaking truth! ❤
Thanks for covering this Katie. Lisa was a much appreciated part of our TV news every day. Isn t she wonderful? She out shines with her beautiful looks. She 'll be back in her own way, no doubt. She s inspiring.
Canada here. Outraged how Lisa was treated, my hope is that she finds a strong voice in our new non msm streams. She’s a good journalist with gravitas and we need women like this to be loud and present. Really good interview, thanks both. - silver from premature and embraced for about 6-8 years I lose count. And btw she looks amazing!
I always love seeing Lisa. I hope to see her regularly again….soon. I cannot watch CTV at 11p.m. Any longer. I really felt the anger and disappointment.
Thank you Katie for this in-debt interview which brought so much to the Light. She is so inspiring and is turning her hurt and loss into such a powerful voice for women all over the World. I will certainly “take away” so many inspiring moments in your discussion, but will most remember her statement, “We have never been more informed, but less enlightened!” Great interview!
She’s so wonderful and thank you Katie for inviting her in. I’m now a subscriber to your podcast. I’m hoping you are well. As far as Lisa, I have Boycotted CTV news and will remind people when I share the Podcast. She’s looking fantastic and seems to be happy with her change. I just see that as the silver lining.
Lisa just won the prestigious Gordon Sinclair Award for excellance in Broadcast Journalism for the 3rd year in a row. CTV refused to submit her work and Lisa was forced to submit her own work. Well done Lisa! Congratulations!
I remember being extremely upset the day I learned Lisa had been let go. I cried (partly sadness and partly anger). She has been my favourite even before Robertson left. He was also a trusted news source. But Lisa has always been very trusted and empathetic as a journalist. Whenever I saw her, I stopped to listen. I am so happy she has kept busy and, in a way, being let go has allowed her to do the news on her terms and specific projects that she is passionate. I'm happy she is still in my world. That CTV man who made that terrible decision sucks. But Lisa rocks. ❤️
So nice to see you after all these months. I still don’t understand what happened but that you were gone. I have no desire to watch any news programs especially your former station. I am also a Canadian and a woman proud of your efforts as a journalist.
We watched Lisa LaFlamme every single night as she was so professional and a pleasure to watch. As a Canadian, it was so disappointing when CTV did not renew her contract ….unbelievable !!!! They made a big mistake. I too as Katie Couric just said --why didn’t CTV News reverse their decision. She is missed !!!!
Miss your voice and see you each night Lisa. I miss your professionalism, your grace, your be who you are personality. I hope you continue to find your way and look forward to seeing you in any new adventure that comes your way. You are an incredible role model for women young and old. Thank you!
Katie, Thank you for this important conversation with Lisa. Lisa, you are a beautiful person. It’s wonderful getting to know you better. I’ll be tuning in to CityTV for the Coronation with you for sure. Unowho can fly a kite.
A great interview with Lisa. I hate what CTV did to her and I haven’t watched the channel since. I have zero interest in watching a channel that discriminates against anyone, especially women of a certain age…I happen to fall into the same age category. Definitely not a channel for me.
As a middle-aged woman who, when she was a 25 year old woman, planned on becoming a broadcast journalist before health problems put an end to that dream, I was and remain disgusted by the blatant sexism and ageism used to so unceremoniously dismiss Lisa after so many decades of incredibly hard work and such excellent reporting of so many history-making events in so many countries and on so many continents! I was even more shocked that this would happen in the beautiful country of Canada. What message does this send to every young woman planning to work in broadcast journalism?! Shame on BellMedia for this.
I don't watch anything but City TV. CTV, Global, CBC, are ALL racists! I don't see my community, the Italian community represented in any of these newscasts. I have also gone as far as emailing our Trudeau government and these stations with my concerns, re the lack of diversified representation, most especially for the Italian Canadian community. So little of us are present in the media, journalism, Hollywood, law, medicine, etc, most especially women. How is this DIE?
My concerns have fallen on deaf ears. All I hear is crickets. Well they lost my vote and my support. The Canadian society is NOT equitable to some communities e.g. the Italian community. Who ia our voice?
Lisa was treated horribly by Bell Media - today they did a wonderful retirement send off for one of their daytime journalists and all I could think about was why they did what they did to her - none of this makes sense
Thank you, Katie, for this fabulous interview with Lisa LaFlamme. You are both icons in broadcast journalism. Thank you for making this podcast that provides a platform for the very necessary in-depth, thoughtful and insightful discussion on some of the important issues facing investigative journalism and media today and the ongoing challenges women face in this very unforgiving industry.
Thank you for this excellent interview with one of our Canadian treasures, Lisa LaFlamme! The treatment of her and other women is disgusting. Women, continue to "name and shame" as Lisa said. So Pleased to see that you are doing well, Lisa ! À la prochaine!
The “business decision” to fire her was was one thing - denying her a chance to say goodbye to her loyal news viewers was vindictive and really bad business. I don’t watch CTV news anymore. That decision eroded viewer trust amongst both men & women of all ages. The decision about her natural hair? That caused the backlash. It’s an example of sexism and ageism that affects so many women.
Lisa is the reason why I let my hair go gray. I thought "if she can do it, so can I!" I am 67 years old and I have had my hair gray since Covid and I have never looked back! I think Lisa Laflamme is admirable and the classiest lady I have ever seen on TV. We see a whole lot of men with gray and white hair on tv and they keep their job! Women, on the other hand, seem to have no place on tv if they have gray or white hair. I have noticed it, in particular, on the news media, where all women dye their hair, no matter their age. Lisa is the only one who had the guts to let it all go and she lost her job for it! It really is a national shame! This woman should have her own tv show in the least! We have so much to learn from her! Lisa, please come back on tv!!!
I loved everything about this. The information, the authenticity, the insight and honesty... I love and admire you both. I hope to see Lisa Laflamme back in the media, as a veteran she deserves it and earned it. She's smart and a class act. We need to have more people we admire on the platform. And just because a younger woman won't relate to her at the moment, it doesn't mean she's not registering that her future looks possible and bright by having a silver haired woman on the news. We need it.
My hair turned completely white at age 30. I dyed my hair till I was 44 because my hair turned out blonde not medium brown. I had always avowed that I would quit dyeing my hair at age 45 but my hair decided that it was done. The transition from blonde to white was painless. Lisa is right, it was a very freeing experience! I absolutely love my white hair and wear it proudly!!! Bell Media, you men are idiots!!!
Loving the Iris Apfel style large frames. Lisa is beautiful at any age with any hair colour. We miss her gravitas and her intelligent nightly presentations. Her employer made a stupid 'business decision' that will be talked about for decades.
Thanks so much for this interesting interview! Both of you ladies are the best journalists, you ladies are so much needed now days in our lives, when journalism written or in tv, are daily confusing the Audience everywhere in the world! I’m from Chile following the conversations between you both excellent journalists!
I was disgusted by CTV's decision to drop Lisa. I immediately voiced my thoughts and opinions via email and I did include that I would no longer be a loyal viewer. How can I when they don't value beautiful, intelligent aging women!!! I am so proud of Lisa Laflamme and I hope to see her on television on another network very soon!!!!
Lisa's authenticity, even during the toughest times of war, is what distinguished her from other reporters. When she delivered bad news, one could see the sadness in her eyes. And when she came to us with good news, her eyes also said it all. Her self-confidence and knowledge of world situations have contributed to the trust that she obtained from people trough out her professional journey. Kudos to you Lisa! By the way, you look amazing in grey.
I miss you Lisa but you are an inspiration to all of us. I also don't watch CTV. Shame on them. Thank you Katie Couric for doing this podcast. Wonderful and you were so ultimately kind and gentile in all of your questions and comments. So happy Lisa , that you are moving forward as only you can do and still bringing us the truth. ❤
She pushed back against an upstart male. She had the experience and had earned the right to do that, just as most men do against other men all of the time who have earned that right. His ego got the best of him. No woman was going to stand up to him. It’s really pathetic. It needs to stop.
@@audreydakin8130 some executive producer at CTV? Shouldn’t the responsibility be on the top executives? Lisa is one of their top Anchor. Such a shame and a black eye on Canadian Media and Canadian as a society.
@@freedomlife3623 absolutely the executive producer has a lot of sway in an organization. Top executives listen to these people. By the way, he ceases to have that position.
I remember hearing that Lisa was replaced because CTV News wanted to change the model of how they delivered the news and Lisa refused to bend. She was a trusted voice for a reason and I haven’t followed a traditional news show since.
This beautiful, vibrant lady deserves so much more than her former employer gave her. Western countries do not respect women over 30. The rest of the world does not do this. America is just as bad. The old are viewed as disposable and an annoyance. It is their loss. With age comes wisdom and it’s a country’s loss that does not realize thus & value it’s citizens.
Thank you ladies, excellent interview. Good luck with the Canadian TV awards Lisa, i hope you win your category again this year. I will find a way to watch them from the States and will have my 🇨🇦fingers crossed for you.
So proud to be a Canadian with grey hair, was watching Lisa have not since your gone, you are so smart hope to see you soon on tv regularly Take care👏👏👏👍👩🦳
Many years ago when Lisa was early in her career she was a news broadcaster on my local tv station CKCO. One summer she fronted a rock band at a local live outdoor show (I cannot remember what the occasion was unfortunately) that I attended. That gal could sing and she rocked out hard! It was impressive. If it was ever recorded it would be cool to see. I always thought that if the news gig didn't work out, that could have been an alternative career.
For a bit of additional context, this is not just any TV journalist -- Lisa LaFlamme has been a household name in Canada for decades, deeply respected by the public. Also, the network that employed her was bought out by a telecommunications giant whose goal is to sell phone/ internet subscriptions. Understanding/ valuing trusted journalism is nowhere on their corporate radar.
Unfortunately when a woman is of certain age, she is no longer viewed as as valuable as she was in her 30’s. I realized this when I started looking for a new job in my late 40’s. Before the pandemic I couldn’t find a job if my life depended on it! I knew as soon as I walked into an interview and the interviewer was in their early 30’s, I didn’t stand a chance. Fast forward to post pandemic, I am constantly being contacted by recruiters. Why? Because now there is demand for my services? This makes me so mad! Now I am needed? The younger generation doesn’t want to work? I don’t understand why society views a middle aged woman as no longer of value, disregarding her experience and knowledge. Lisa has so much to give to journalism but she was snatched from all of us. I have stopped watching CTV National News since happened. Wishing you all the best.
Boy, you can sure tell she had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Bell is big business but is stuck in its own history with regard to its Human Resources policies. We need to address the inequities no matter the size of the giant.
Love Lisa LaFlamme. I was so angry and still feel that way but her attitude is wonderful. I wish her all the best in the future and love that she is still moving forward.
Great interview. Love Lisa and miss watching her veteran, insightful, wise, dedicated, professional, and talented anchor broadcast every night. Bell Media did a disservice to Canadians by firing her. Love her grey hair and her authenticity.
Lisa is my very favourite and sought-after reporter. I'm thrilled that she stood up for herself and told her truth. Our voices matter and it's one of the most powerful ways to force change. I wish her well in every future endeavour!
🇨🇦 This goes way past hair colour. Males who make it up the food chain are generally threatened by strong, confident, challenging women. Lisa has always graciously shown these qualities as anchor and in her private life. The old boys network has no clue how to appreciate and respect these women. There are so many of us in this world. Look out men. In case you haven’t noticed we are here and we are not going anywhere. So great to hear that Lisa landed on her feet.
I was enjoying this interview very much, until about 25 minutes in when an advertisement caused the screen to go black and freeze, leaving me unable to view the rest of the interview 😢🤬. Best wishes to Lisa and Katie, two of my favourite news women.
Lisa looks so beautiful with her silver hair,. Makes me SO angry this cost her the job she had been in for sooooo long, she deserved better. Saw on CTV news tonight that another person, Austin Delaney, was retiring. HE has silver hair and had a lovely send off from the staff at CTV. He was an excellent reporter, like Lisa but...WHY was his a celebration and Lisa was dumped, humiliated...possibly because she had allowed her hair to go silver. Double standards...AGAIN!!
I've named getting fired because of your age and sex "Being LAFLAMMED!!" It's so shameful and such an important moment in our national history that it deserves to be turned into a verb!!
I was disgusted by Bell Media with what they did to Lisa but surprisingly not surprised as we've dealt with issues with them in our own family. We weren't tremendous fans of Lisa but did watch her for our nightly news and special national occasions. No one deserved how she was treated - she was the wrong age and the wrong sex. We haven't watched CTV News or for that matter CTV since she was let go.
As a Canadian and a woman, we are VERY PROUD of Lisa!!!!

Lisa we miss you so much 😢You are so dang beautiful
Thank you ladies, excellent interview. Good luck with the Canadian TV awards Lisa, i hope you win your category again this year. I will find a way to watch them from the States and will have my 🇨🇦fingers crossed for you.
I stopped watching CTV news after what they did. I hate Bell Media for it. Thank you so much Lisa. We miss you ❤🇨🇦
So proud to be a Canadian with grey hair, was watching Lisa have not since your gone, you are so smart hope to see you soon on tv regularly
Take care👏👏👏👍👩🦳
This is amazing The 2 best women in the business ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Many years ago when Lisa was early in her career she was a news broadcaster on my local tv station CKCO. One summer she fronted a rock band at a local live outdoor show (I cannot remember what the occasion was unfortunately) that I attended. That gal could sing and she rocked out hard! It was impressive. If it was ever recorded it would be cool to see. I always thought that if the news gig didn't work out, that could have been an alternative career.
Holy Toledo two favs coming together, can’t wait to watch 😊
I still miss on TV!!
We need her even more in these crazy times!😢
what a great interview. thanks.
Class, respectability and great hair!
Miss you Lisa, and i think your hair is absolutely beautiful. I wish my hair would go like yours. Its taking forever. Bless you.
We need to address the inequities no matter the size of the giant.
very heartfelt discussion
Outrage is an understatement when I heard CTV fired Lisa.Shame on them. PS the person who fired her I believe lost his job.
Love Lisa LaFlamme. I was so angry and still feel that way but her attitude is wonderful. I wish her all the best in the future and love that she is still moving forward.
I do not watch CTV anymore. She is a wonderful person and was a great anchor. Bell Media sucks.
We love you Lisa and miss you.
I know I reacted because LISA looks so beautiful and her grey hair looks fabulous and I wanted to keep watching her for years
I have decided to fire Bell as they fired Lisa Laflamme. There are many other telephone providers.
Lisa is a true Rock Star! Hugs and hugs and hugs, Calli in Canada
Lisa, you’re an inspiration and women in this country 🇨🇦 are standing with you always. ❤thank you for staying strong looking forward!
Miss Lisa on the news so much, it's not the same anymore
Lisa looks so beautiful with her silver hair,. Makes me SO angry this cost her the job she had been in for sooooo long, she deserved better. Saw on CTV news tonight that another person, Austin Delaney, was retiring. HE has silver hair and had a lovely send off from the staff at CTV. He was an excellent reporter, like Lisa but...WHY was his a celebration and Lisa was dumped, humiliated...possibly because she had allowed her hair to go silver. Double standards...AGAIN!!
What's the big deal about her hair? I don't get it. She looks amazing. And I do miss her on the CTV Anchor desk.
When Bell called to switch to Bell - I said I had grey hair and was afraid of being fired - then hung up!! I’m with Rogers & will stay with them -
I've named getting fired because of your age and sex "Being LAFLAMMED!!" It's so shameful and such an important moment in our national history that it deserves to be turned into a verb!!
I was sweet on her going way back. Definitely think she got a raw deal. Hope to see her again regularly on Canadian TV.
I really miss her. She's the best.
I will never watch CTV again!
I think Lisa should be our next G.G!
