As a Glaswegian i can safely say Chewin the Fat and Still Game are two of the best Scottish comedys ever.
Absolute class.
Picking bar fights in the holodeck - priceless!
"YE KEN FINE YE'RE GAGGIN' FOR IT, EH?" Bloody classic!!! I love Chewin' The Fat... Makes me proud to be Scottish!!! :o)
Set phasers tae malky!
"Oh go on d' n' talk pish" lol, the Borg assimilates them, and the Borg starts speaking Scots, which acts like a computer virus and destroys them from within. That would be a great Scottish Startrek episode.
Laughed so hard at this scottish comedy is great.
I must have seen this 50 times now and yet it's still hillarious.
"It's like hee haw we've ever seen afore cap'n ken!"
i love our Scottish brethren!!! You lads are the greatest!
Stjepan, Croatia!
This scetch had me rolling on the floor. Absolute classic.
This is hilarious! I'm not exactly sure why, but it's beautifully funny. I "discovered" it a few days ago, and I have to watch it at least one or two times a day. And I find myself repeating certain brief portions to myself throughout the day ("Set phasers to malkey" [spelling?], for example). I love it!
Reminds me of a time, when we disembarked in Scotland (a ferry from Bergen) and asked an elderly gentlemen for direction on the road - we couldn't understand a word, so we bode farewell and decided to follow our map.
My grandparents introduced this to me when i was young, some of the best memories i have is watching Big Man, the two Poofs and Alastair and Rory get run over by logs
In a twist, the chief engineer still speaks in a funny accent because he's from Berwick... the poor Sassenach bastard.
jerseydevs2000 ways from Berwick??
Ways from Berwick? That would be the A1, whether heading north or south that is how you get from Berwick.
"Wull ye stop keekin' at ma arse!" Hahaha, some of this is not like any Taysider I've ever heard, but as a Dundonian I can say most of it is spot on. Gie it lalldy!
She sounds more like someone from north of Inverness.
'Malky' is a headbutt in our language. =p Still great after all these years.
I LOVE Scotland and I wouldn't like something more than to spend some time living there..Cheers from Egypt : )
I'm from Tennessee and I will get back to you in a year once I translate!
Sean Coleman did u translate it then that's one year I have been waiting
"Awa' an dinna talk pish" - " Go away, and please refrain from talking nonsense."
Sean Coleman Ok. It's been one year now, where's the translation ?
he's in shock , he voted for trump and found out he was joking about draining the swamp . he he .
How does that make any sense? Maybe you can throw in a wall and golden shower reference too. Brexit much?
Finally, someone took the time to translate every sentence -thank you! this is one of the funniest skits i've ever seen. Chewin the Fat is brilliantly hilarious! cheerz :)
Best Star Trek parody ever!
Even though I'm part Australian, part British with some Scottish in the mix, I think this is the best parody ever.
Really don't understand people saying they can't understand a word. I'm from the fricking Midlands in England and I understood every word
wit does awae n rile it ken! mean?
I struggled with some of it and i'm a Scot from Ayrshire.Taysiders talk a bit different from Aberdonians,Highlanders folk from Dumfries,Glawegians etc.
Dundonians have a habit of speaking very quickly and we have our own words for just about everything, it's a heavily customised variation of the Doric dialect spoken in most of the northeast. We usually have to speak slower and more pronounced even around other Scots or else they get lost in our jibberish about kundies and baffies :D
You don't see a lot of us on TV and if you've ever seen an interview with the band The View you'll understand why. This sketch was a very watered down version of Tayside.
lmao we all know Midlands don't exist
@brytonite1694
Aye, it's just a made-up place along the same lines as Brigadoon day ya know know that I huve known that u ma life
since u wize a wayne
nay such place as
The Midlands ya dunderdeed ya PMSL.
I actually quite like
The West Midlands but I remner the the young boy
on reception could nay understand a word we where saying he was as thick as can be when we went to Coventry back in 2016 we slowed it right doon for him & he still didny huv a Scoby we end up needing to wright it doon fur him he was a right doss clown the young boy.
We later asked an Asian looking lady for directions & she understood us nay problemo crackin old lady.
That last line was:
"Och awa' and dinnae talk pish!"
"We don't believe you."
I'm from the States and I practically understood nothing and I love this video!!
i feel the same with the south usa accents lmao
If i was to translate it for you, you would be in stitches laughing, and crying your eyes out too.
Don't forget that the original series the Chief Engineer was "Scotty"...Give me warp factor ten ....Aye Captain, but Yea canny change the laws of Physics, = Yes Captain but you cannot change the laws of Physics.
Well I am from Germany and understood all. You Americans have serious problems with ä,ö,ü.l😂
😂 To be fair though Chewing the Fat was broadcast for a Scottish audience but I'm glad the rest of the world has caught on
My favorite line from this: "Set phasers to malky" -- for the record, "malky" is Scottish slang for "violent." LOL!
The bar on the holodeck was the Clansman from Still Game.
TheSideband funny enough that's what I was thinking, the first series used a real pub but after that it was a set
I may not have understood a word of this video, but I sure did enjoy it! Also, Grant Kirkhope sent me.
So no wonder GW cancelled the Squats.... as this is basically what Dwarves in space would be like. Messing up the whole universe and having a good time doing it ;).
"Am huvin a go at the hoaliday camp am hoaliday daft ken?"
"it`s like hee haw we`ve ever see afore cap`in ken?"
best lines in the sketch lol amazing show :D
"Ah'v telt ye afore, any mair ae yer pish an' I'll stick this right in yer clacker bag!"
"I've told you before, any more of your maliciousness and I'll stick this right in your testicles"
"Whit ye' daein', ya dafty? Och, I'm just haein a go on the Holodeck, Captain, ah'm Holodeck daft, ken?"
"What are you doing, you idiot? Aw, I'm just having a go on the Holodeck, Captain, I'm really into the Holodeck, know what I mean?"
"Set phasers tae Malky!"
"Set phasers to headbutt"
U know UR Scottish when u understand every word
I kinda think you at least suspect you're Scottish when you're from Scotland.
if this was in spanish , would i still be scottish ?
I understand about 10% of it and I am Hungarian. What does it mean? :D
Just daft tayside banter bud :)
#absoftitanium well, i understood that.
If yous were wondering, the cast of this are all Glaswegian (opposite side of the country)...I see this sketch as Glaswegians making fun of the way Dundonians (or east coast scots) speak! very very funny !
Em Fae dundee mate & eh was pishin mehsel laughing tae .i will now translate what I have just said .i am from dundee & I was killing myself laughing too
ryan findlay eh'm fae Dundee tae man, yasss! Yih dinnae huv tae translate yersel, it's funny as fuck whan other fowk canna mind wut yer sayin, ken
Tak yer puss fir a shite, Gx!
Glaswegians? Dundonians? You Trekkies are a geeky lot.
@@marywealth6475That's what your called if your from Glasgow or Dundee, it has nothing to do with Star Trek 😂
nowhere on this earth will you find humour as good as this, whenever am in a bad mood a jist watch this and a feel refreshed and thank the good lord im a scotsman
This gets funnier every time i see it!! 😂😂 Set phasers tae malky, love it, sheer quality!! 😂😂
It's a bit of fun, that's all. Accents from many parts of the UK are difficult to understand between its varies constituent countries.
Almost as tough as listening to my Welsh Great Grandmother.
I watched a show last year that was about the chronically unemployed in a scheme in Scotland. The accent on the people was so strong that even the Scots who watched couldn't understand it. Almost every comment was a compliant about why there were no subtitles.
Robert Cuminale o
Nah we understood it fine
Robert Cuminale, your talking about The Scheme, a documentary about a housing estate in Kilmarnock in Ayrshire; I understood everything that they said.
I understood every word they said 😂
born in Scotland lived there 11 yrs now in s/wales 54 yrs but still understand every word
I can't wait to go to Scotland this June.
this is a show I'd definitely watch.
They used to show Chewin' the Fat in North East England, and I loved getting copies of this and Still Game from my Scots friends. I always understood what was said (well, 90%) of the time, but after being in Canada for 6 years I had to watch this a second time to understand it all this time. So, some of us non-Scots do still 'get it' and love it.
No matter how many times i see this, it still makes me laugh my ass off. "Set phasers tae Malkie."
Absolutely bloody hilarious. i'm from perth and understood every word although not don't hear kids or adults using this dialect these days.
Stop keeking at ma erse!
arse*
***** She never pronounced it wae an e
@Steven Hickman didn't
Steven Hickman clearly says “a” not “e”
Still sexual harassment in outer space. Chicks knew how to fight back tho.
I'm from North Carolina in the USA, and I love the Chewin' the Fat radio series...but I confess that with a clip like this I wish there were subtitles. :)
The music.... it's from a swedish comedy/drama series from the ninties. Kenny Starfighter.
That show was awsome
ahm just haein a go oan the holodeck captain, ahm holodeck daft ye ken?
Hah I am from Alabama but have lived in Dundee for over ten years so I ken wot tha mean lol
+Jim Bertagnolli Just curious Jim, how often do Scots inquire about your accent, and are most Scots nice enough to Americans?
+Jim Bertagnolli Just curious Jim, how often do Scots inquire about your accent, and are most Scots nice enough to Americans?
+Nigelxman they inquire quite often and I have not ever had a problem with Scots at all. It's usually just a case of "You don't sound like you're from around here." Often they think I'm Canadian though I don't sound Canadian at all. I've only ever been met with curiosity and get along quite well with Scots.
Still going on my faves. This rocks!
Your translations here were actually very helpful. Thank you
Subtitles for the Scotch gibberish impaired
Brilliant, although might need subtitles for our friends south of the border! LOL
Was trying to turn subtitles on, just to see what they made of it...
And everyone else on this planet ... I could barely make out a word they said. :D
Anyone who subtitles this deserves a Glaswegian Kiss
Aww that's sweet!
How lovely of You to offer such a bleeding disfigured face, w/ blood runnin' doon ma nose! 😊
(joking!) 😉 👍
"Captain! Gonnae let us go tae the replicator? Ah'm starvin'! Aye, as long as ye bring us back a mug a' Royal Game soup an' a couple a'e ootsiders"
"Captain! May I go to the replicator? I'm hungry! Yes, as long as you bring me back a mug of Royal Game soup and a couple of outside slices of bread"
(In Scotland, a company called Baxters make what many class as luxury soup. One of their soups is Royal Game, and an "ootsider" is the end piece of bread from a loaf)
Set phasers tae malkie, has nothing to do with open razors as I have seen a lot of people post ( it may well have started out as this) malkie just means give it everything you have, so set phasers tae malkie just means ,put phasers to the highest setting.
Malkie Frazer = Razor
Headbutt is a Glasgow kiss
Malkie is a Glasgow Smile
Exactly, no one in Tayside uses the word malkie, it's probably the most out of place word in this sketch. The tayside equivalent of give it everything is "Gie it lalldy".
Hmmm, Google translate says they're speaking Romanian....
Or was it Romulan?
I could only understand about half of this but it was hilarious! I could never visit Scotland if they talk like that! (and I am half Scottish as weel!)
Found lots and lots of happiness
Thank you
Sitfaserstaemalkie !!!
Ye git heehaw chance ae gettin yer whole! :D
"You've got no chance of getting laid!"
+Cara H
It's "hole" even in Dundee.
As in: you can have part of the hole, or the whole hole.
YW.
@glasgowladster
Possibly, possibly.
Seems likely.
Never heard of that before, though, but I'm not from Glasgow or anywhere nearby.
These two boys are a credit to Scotland.Clever comedy at its very best.Wha's like us?
Cant believe this is English... LOL....its like watching a foreign language.
It's not English
ScorpiusTheScorpin Actually a lot of it is. "Stop keeking at ma erse" is Scots but maist o't's Inglis, ken.
Anon B b
It is English, we just fucked aboot wae it so much tae piss the English off.
"Ken" is a copy of the dutch word for "know". They use it from Cumbernauld up to Dundee! Glaswegians would never dream of saying it!
+gmaccruyff55 Yea east coast!
+gmaccruyff55 To be fair it was Taysiders In Space, so they were doing Dundonian accents more than Glaswegian.
+Keith Wright It took me a while to figure out if they were actually trying to do an east coast accent! Wasn't til he said ken
"Ken" comes fom Old English "Cennan" as do many words in Scots. eg Bairn from OE "Bearn" and "Wee" from "wæge" The east coast was settled by Angles from Northumbria
These words are also common in Northern English dialect.
***** Yes, there is of course a (later)Scandinavian element which would have reinforced the existing English usage.
In fact, the Scots Language Centre states:
"Scots and its ancestor Anglo-Saxon, have been spoken in this region since the 7th century AD, that is 1,400 years or so."
"Set Phazers to Malky" I still say this when we set off in the car!
Accents so thick, even the Universal translater can't work.
I’m from Carnoustie and have been to the aboukir many times 😂😂 brilliant
When I was at the Fontainebleaus Music Festival in France, there was a student from Scotland -- couldn't understand him to save my life!
PS - its not a Glaswegien accent its a Fife accent hence "Taysiders".
Its from the Show "Chewin' the Fat" if you want to find more...
I got a fair chunk of what was being said, although I really cracked up when I heard the "richt big hoor" line. I'm of Scots ancestry (great-grandparents , etc.) on both sides of my family, and when I was growing up my dad always used to say 'hoor' when he meant 'whore', even though he wasn't born in or raised in Scotland, and his father wasn't either. I guess that's because at one time in Canada, it was not unusual to hear people of Scots heritage saying 'hoor'.
Brilliant! I've seen it a hundred times and still laugh!
"oh go on, dunnee talk pish"
The bit before the commer im not certain, but the end bits definately right, couple of years or watching still game (some of the actors are remarkably familiar) does that :) Side note, Pish is the actual scottish word for its sound-alike.
@sunnydayinperth Anyway, Stanley Baxter covered the topic of 'Glaswegian' a long time back. He said that the Edinburgh folk were laughing at the Glaswegians, whilst the Glaswegians were laughing at themselves.
ps found a book-Crooked Talk.I think the PMs choice of words may have been linked to razor gangs in oz who were operating at the same time as those in scotland, especially in east end of glasgow. According to the book, the 70s slang words of giving someone a 'dawn fraser' (after the swimmer) and a 'malcolm fraser' (pm) are australian. Many brits left the uk to go to oz, but glasgae gangs prob starting using it as malcolms family were scottish. I'll finish with a chelsea smile! ;)
Och n Beghora! (That's about all the Scottish I know, and I probably mangled it! lol)
Too funny! And I'd bet they'd kick the knickers off the Klingons n' Borg! Thanx for posting!
Wrong country, but I'll let you ha a squach oan the net fir yer sell ta fin oot, Ken whit a mean.
+Old timer Eh ken pal, is biys got it ah wrang
the communication officer is the best one!
ahahahahahahahahahah...
Only one bit i never got; (inverness man me!) "Royal game soup, an a couple of ......?". But the "will ya stop keekin at ma arse!" makes me laugh every time!
I STILL love this video!
" taysiders in space" pure quality , even folk fae scotland canny understand fifers ...
Fell off my effing chair laughing SUPERB I spent 4 years in Arbroath I think I met all the crew LOL :)
I've watched it dozens of time and I still can't tell WTF they are saying! Makes me laugh though I love it!
I asked my Girlfriend about this since she stays farther into Glasgow than i do and had probably heard some different patter than me and she has never heard of "Malkie" being used as slang for a razor, only a headbutt.Theres actually a famous scene from Rab C. Nesbitt where Mary Doll heabutts a guy for trying to kiss her/feel her up and says something along the lines of "That's it you're getting malkied" then headbutts him.
Taysider's in Space.... priceless!
@Monovoxx There's a book called "Shut Yer Pus" that has humerous definitions of scottish words and terms, it was quite limited tho, and you can also get scottish dictionaries all over the place.
Nice to see these guys like this. Only know them from Still Game. Recognised there voices straight away though.
I understood it & it's BRILLIANT!!
Ye, I think the term Malkie is now pretty much a generic term for 'giving someone a doing' - headbutting etc, but it has its origins from threatening to slash someone... lovely! Cheers!
That would be worth the price of admission!
THANK you for this vid!! my g/f is a scott and likes star trek.....shes gonna LOVE this
@sm0keshell I have heard other English people speak of English accents, and the whole reason Mel Brooks put that line in was because of all the people on both sides of the pond who were upset that Kevin Costner wasn't allowed to use an English accent in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
If there wasn't any such thing as an English accent there'd have been no controversy.
ah. After reading trainspotting I feel fluent in it now, but always wondered about 'ken'. thanks
@TheScottishRocker Interesting, didn't know the verb to keek existed. It's probably related to Dutch kijken and German gucken (they almost pronounce it as kucken, though), both mean "to look". In Swiss German, we use luege, which is probably related with "to look". (lugen exists in High German, but it's very rare and has a very specific meaning.) Comes to show how entangled languages are, haha! :3
@MaskedMan66 - 'Malkie' is rhyming slang for razor attack (Malcolm Fraser = Razor) It goes back to the Glasgow cutthroat razor gangs of the 1960's. Youngsters today have turned it into meaning 'Heidbutt'..fuck knows why.
hahaha, that was enlightening sir..i got a kid in strathclyde Univ and so far hes not having any difficulty with the language..he sez its charming..a bit cold for us southeast asians though..have a nice day sir.
I laughed so hard when I first saw this!
"Captain, there a richt big hoor o a spaceship..." LOL
Ok its said to mean headbutt,
There's some history about this word. The story goes that, in the days of the Glasgow gangs ie. Teddy Boy era (c.'No Mean City' and all that). There was a gang leader/member called Malcom Fraser. Malcolm, shortened to Malky, and rhyming slang (Fraser/Razor) led to the term 'Malky' becoming synonymous with razor attacks. I really can't vouch for the authenticity of this but the expression 'Tae gie sumbiddy the malky' [in a humourous way] carries on to this day.
undrstood every word, and i'll call myself it before anybody else, aye am a grouse and proud.
Made my Earl Grey come out of my nose with laughing xD (seriously xD)
"He's dead, Captain. Stone dead. No pulse or nothin'. ...Will ya stop (bla bla)." That's what she really said there. ;)
And the bar-fighting guy was "havin a holiday" (for them, celebration or relaxation)
@MrDisastard funny I thought that too initially tho it was pointed out the "a couple of ootsiders" is a term for bread for dipping in the soup!
@AndyMcCy No their origins were primarily Gallic. After Rollo's defeat at Chartres, they were given a land somewhere in Normandy in return they had to convert to catholicism and have the French king as overlord. Those vikings never pushed out any Franks; they were actually a minority and by marrying their daughters to the Frankish lords to seal alliances and marrying the locals became the Normans, which were culturally French. The Angevins (Anjou) were ones responsible for the HYW.
@linoma57 guy I work with in Alabama is from Glasgow. He said he was rolling watching this and the star wars one, but he kept having to pause it to explain to his wife what they were saying. She's from Cullman, AL if you want to google that :)
i am from Australia, Gippsland, love the Scotts accented BS! Here in Gippsland, we often get accused as sounding like Scot's, from the British tourists, half our place names are Scott, i grew up in Glengarry! never mind the explorers and squatters who walked in here..and most of us love it!.......Innunmunstiaeas!...thats the last bit i heard...never mind us!
