- If you feel like you're lost on the fretboard, it's not because you're lacking capability. You're lacking context and knowledge. There's a big difference.
In this lesson you'll learn the chromatic scale which will show you that you can play literally ANYTHING, anywhere on the fretboard. This is the first step to finally leave that "lost" feeling behind!
Let me show you what I'm talking about...

The best channel for fully formed adult guitar players, by one. Chris always provides some sort of full meal of instruction.
(bowing deeply)
You really know the fretboard. Helping us realize the 12 notes are available in any position would never have occurred to me independently. You open our eyes and make us aware, so thanks!
I'm so glad to help, and this journey is a live one for me as well. Just working this one out I learned SO much!
I really like the sound of alternate stairway as an accompaniment in the background of the normal way of playing .Thank You . Brother.
You're very welcome!
Love the Slayer/Carpenters comparison. :) So awesome to readily have access to this kind of knowledge. Thanks for the clarity of information as always!
Glad it was helpful, Mr Krinkle!
Just when I think I have a really good understanding of the fretboard I watch Chris and realize I have a long way to go. Very inspiring, more to learn! Thanks Chris!
Thanks Chris. Always appreciate how clear you make your explanations
My pleasure, Ed! And thanks so much for your support!
Another great lesson - thanks Chris!!
As usual Thks Chris Envoy!
It's great to see you teaching, others I have seen don't tell anything but make you beat about the bush, I've been playing guitar since the past 40yrs and I know Chris gives absolute incredible knowledge of the instrument, if stick on to what he tells you you will certainly make it, He tells you what the greatest guitarists of all times played while learning, don't miss his videos, you will be able to play anything anyone can throw at you, his methodology is perfect.
Wow, thanks. I appreciate that.
Hey Chris, thank you so much for these lessons, im learning so much! and i finally feel like im getting out of my previous plateu. Thanks!
Of course! Glad to have you here.
Man you could teach guitar in your sleep. Incredible stuff.
I wish!
Thank you, great lesson
Thank you Chris..!!
Great lesson.. and the best and most revealing tab for the Chromatic Scale exercises that I’ve ever seen..!👍🏼❤️
Glad it was helpful, Joe! Its a great concept to keep in the back of your mind at all times...keeps you curious.
@@curiousguitarist I am that,Chris..👍🏼
Jeez, Chris, that certainly got some gears moving and me immediately picking up the guitar to "light up" the dark zones. Masterful. I think you're onto something (at least for my style of learning) by taking familiar tunes or riffs and using them to get confidence around the fretboard... great stuff.
Yup, that's the ticket right there!
This is an awesome lesson. Your stuff is eye-opening.
Glad to hear it, and glad you enjoyed this one!
Mahalo Chris, that was awesome!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for all your support.
Thank you Chris!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏
Of course!
Rick Beato was using all twelve notes in one chord. Sound was not as weird as the name of the chord 😅 great video Chris. Cheers
🤯 mind blowing
yes!!!!
I'm not gonna lie here.., this was confusing for me to understand. Yes I know the Chromatic scale, know my keys, and can move around pretty good for the 40 plus years I've played,...but the explanation or philosophy left me lost on the lesson.., I will definitely be watching this a few more times until I grasp what your theory was that I missed. Some days are a little more challenging then others when it comes to This bottom-less treasure chest we call The Guitar. Thank you as always sir!
Indeed, this one is certainly more abstract than some of the others in a way.
The big takeaway here for me is that everything is under your fingers at all times, and that’s a more powerful motivator to choose than a pattern
Good video! And it's obvuous that, it doesn't matter whether you play guitar or another instrument. Knowing where the notes are and how you can play them is crucial information for any musician. That being said, it will take years to truely understand and communicate with others. But you can do it 🙂
Truth, and thank you!
Crickets got me!😂 Great lesson! 🤙
Glad you enjoyed them...I try to put a little humor in there from time to time.
@curiousguitarist Do you think a cricket pedal would be killer right before a solo?😁🍺
@@Rickster6118 ha!!!
Yes! As the doors of perception are cleaned…
...so they open more easily and much wider...
:) I was just playing around with this same concept on a recent Dr Dre snippet, so I could fool around with it on my 4 string bass, having to move the higher sounding notes from the guitar elsewhere. ;)
Sweet!
Hi Chris.I've had a guitar for two years and in that time i toyyed with it and never seriously persisted to learn songs and techniques.Currently I would say I only know the open chords and c major scale and my technique is awful.I've searched all over the internet and there is too much to learn but I don't know in what sequential order. Are there any playlists or videos in your channel where I could restart.I play the acoustic guitar and want to play fingerstyle
My channel really focuses on music theory for guitarists more than a specific style. That said there's a "WATCH THESE FIRST" playlist here that should help get you the basics of theory very effectively!
Forgive me if i missed but did you/could you give us an exercise for this concept?
Yes, I tabbed out this whole thing as an exercise on Patreon.

Great stuff :) So when will you be teaching for vocalists? :) Already are, you say? Hmm :)
I wish!
@@curiousguitarist Quite a bit of what you put here is more applicable to singing than one would suppose :) Makes me wish I'd been...unlocked...and singing more back then, and along with you playing. Would've been fun and I'm sure I'd be better today at it :)
I have litererally sent multiple e-mails and the replies to your messages here I don't see.. I hope you got my responses... if you have yet to get my mail I can give you mine and see..
Yes please.
I found it!!
I'll reply tonight!
I threw you an e-mail.. hope to hear from you...
Don't see it yet. Using chris at curiousguitarist dot com?
couldn't we say that blues uses more than 12 notes by bending🤔
Sure…but the blue notes are indeed not “completely” inside the 12 tone system after all :)
Great comment.
