My God. Someone has explained the modes in the most comprehensive manner. This is hands down the best instructional video on modes I’ve ever come across.(in years) Well done Mike!
It’s like sitting in the guitar class n watching the teacher teaching from a board in front. It’s so easy n comfortable to watch n understand it. Thanks a lot. I was tired of playing major & pentatonics. This really is very important fr me as a musician. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The author gives us a usable explanation and working examples of the notes to play and the chords to play in the background. Other authors left info out but this video is literally perfect . I would have a music degree if you were the teacher ! You are great teacher
I'm a guitar major at Berklee Online and although I've got a decent handle (not mastery) of the modes, you have explained them and given useful examples in a far superior manner than anything I've encountered there.
Merci merci merci 👍👍🤘🤘🇨🇵🇨🇵 J'ai les bases pour comprendre et c'était cette explication que je cherchais ! Great Work ! Clair, utile, illustré par des exemples et inspirant 👍👍👍🇨🇵
This is exactly what I needed to fully understand music theory! I've been specifically wondering what chords I can use to get that "wistful" sound! Your style of teaching is the best out there! Many thanks!
1. love the diagrams. 2. dude you are so smart. 3. you have a seriously unique/special delivery with facts. 4. There is no confusion in your delivery. 5. You are to the point. 6 WOW. &7. Thank you.
Just getting to understand modes and the chords better and thought I'd see what's in store with the Minor harmonic. I'm glad I backtracked and found this. Now I'm ready to start again. Thanks 🙌
Man this guy is a phenomenal teacher. Granted when I was younger I didn't give this the time and attention I should have but that is because a lot of this sounded like stuff that only classical composers would use. I mean it sounded like that because of the clumsy 2D way it had all been described to me before. I thought the only way I could get good was just practice scales, learn new chords and hope my ear did the rest. I'm too old now to "make it" but it was never about that. I wish this had been explained to me like this 30 years ago.
i think i was at the perfect point of music knowledge to understand mostly all of it but still be mind blowned about the intricate connections of music theory
Yayyyy ! Finally got modes ! It’s the diatonic chord progressions following the modal scale not the scale itself ! All the guff (in other vids) about tonal centres forget to mention that !
This is a brilliant explanation! It’s easy to absorb the information because of the visuals, and its relaxed but consistent flow of information. A very valuable video you’ve got here
This is by far the best explanation of modes and how they translate into chord progressions I've ever seen. From the actual text to the pacing to the graphics, it's practically impossible not to understand it. Really well done. Thank you
What a great and educational video. The charts are so well done and clearly the result of in depth research and thinking this stuff through with a passion for truly understanding something that so many have tried to explain but few have been able to. The charts are truly helpful. The examples are very important and finally someone who can sing them to drive home the expression and feel of the music. Truly refreshing. One point that I would like to put on the table on this topic is that there is the tendancy to come away from this thinking that songs are written in different modes while this is indeed the case for some songs, most good songs do NOT employ a single mode, rather they employ multiple modes, and switch back and forth. This is important I believe to come to terms with, because if you really want to understand what makes a song special you have to know the modes and recognize how they are employed in the context of a song...amongst other things
My martial arts has elevated because of "Watch It learning." Thank you for explaining. Looking foward to seeing more HIT MUSIC for random people because of MASTER MUSICIAN TEACHING MUSIC to inspiring artist. 🫡
WOW! This is exactly what I was looking for! To see that a Mode is a shift of the same set of notes and just starting with a different note first makes understanding it so much easier! I’m definitely subscribing to your channel 😎🎸🎶☮️
Thank You so much for this explanation of modes. Been stuck with some typical chord progressions for years. Very well put. Made my Eureka moments in modes. The raised 6th which is a characteristic note. And a characteristic note is the one different from the functional modes that is Aeolian and Ionian. ❤❤ Thanks a lot. This will help me unlock other modes!
Solid video, well done. My one suggestion would be to start each progression example by playing the chords by themselves, without any vocals so we can really hear it, then maybe add the vocals the second time through.
I’ve been getting really into modes over the past week, and this video cleared up a lot of that with I was uncertain! I just wanted to let you know your video is very well done in explaining a difficult concept to grab. Your singing is good too! I like what you do!
I understand why some comments would say this is confusing: I think modes are inherently confusing. The video I thought was excellent at explaining the concepts and the visualizations were top notch
Congratulations on a great video. For the graphics and good explanation and the examples to make sense of it all. And for choosing a topic that doesn't get much attention...how to use modes. Thanks
I would argue that "Wicked Game" is an example of Mixolydian as what you have labeled as the IV chord feels more like homebase and should be the I chord.
@@mikegeorge360I took a scale that a friend gave to me and mapped it out across all 24 frets on a sheet of tab. Took lessons 25 years later and said I wanted to understand the modes. Went thru each mode talking about how it applied to music. Wasnt until the end that I connected the dots looking at that piece of tab. Big explosion went off in my head followed by a big smile.
And after playing in Dorian for a while, switch to Ionian or Aeolian to either revel in the harmony of the major or really feel the emotion of the minor. Great way to build/release tension between songs.
Wow. Theory does my head in. I used to think it was because I was stupid. No one, no one has explained this as well as you. Major light bulb moment this morning. Thanks Mike. Subscibed
The Dorian mode is a palindrome in that if you reverse the intervals, you still get the Dorian mode. This is opposed to, say the Major mode, where if you reverse the intervals, you get the Phrygian mode or the Minor mode, where if you reverse the intervals, you get the Mixolydian mode.
My God. Someone has explained the modes in the most comprehensive manner.
This is hands down the best instructional video on modes I’ve ever come across.(in years)
Well done Mike!
FINALLY!!! Someone who actually explains modes that can be easily understood!!! Thank you!
A natural teacher. Thanks Mike! :)
Music is a gift of God
Thank you for doing God's work here on earth !!!

Same here, I was wanting a different sound and kinda knew what I wanted but not knowing how to get it. Now I do!
So well (visually stunning) explained! Please continue with this series!
Thank you so much.
Cheers! More to come on modes. 🤘
@@mikegeorge360true, I even enjoyed your Dorian plagal cadence (IV-i).

Excellent explanation! Your visual representations are perfect. My understanding of modes just went to the next level.
This is the best theory lesson I have seen. You really cleared up Dorian progressions and scale. I truly appreciate you.
Excellent explanation, thank you so much! It's true hardly anyone explains modes from the practical point of view. Can't wait to try this.
There’s so much to extrapolate from this. It’s a whole new way of understanding keys. Enough to keep me busy for hours. Great lesson, Thank You.
Awesome visuals to illustrate relations between notes, modes, and chords!
Merci merci merci 👍👍🤘🤘🇨🇵🇨🇵

This is the best video on modal chord progressions I’ve seen to date! Please do more!!! All the other modes please.
With the inclusion of harmony though the scale , this finally nakes sense. I will use this in my teaching as i find it the best presentation.
This is very helpful and well made. Thank you!

Great video. Great examples of Dorian mode songs.
You are so AwEsOme...I so appreciate you and what you do. And I am accomplished performer and music lover for many years.
Brilliant video, thanks for sharing. I was searching for an explanation of Dorian chord patterns, and here it is! Very well explained.
I love this video! Didn't realize how many of my own songs use Dorian, but it makes sense. They're all sort of wistful at least in my head
I can't believe you played Mad World in place of Run To You by Bryan Adams. When you first mention the progression, it's even IN TIME with the song.
Useful diagrams, thanks!

Glad to see that you did this in parallel. Doing this in relative sounds like a jumbled mess.
Fantastic! This is great.

First time your channel popped up for me. I enjoyed this video. Thank you.
Thanks for posting this!!
Very inspiring, thanks! 🙏🏻
For a person who has two first names, you do some excellent videos
Really interesting video, thank you so much
I realized watching this how handicapped I am by being a visual learner . It also showed
me how some of us learn by ear with our eyes .
Music theory literally means "to see sound," so seeing in combination with hearing can definitely help.🤘
