    I have a 2016 Faded Sonic Blue American Vintage Strat. Yes, it is everything I hoped for and more. The neck is kind of fat, but I've grown to like that quickly. It feels like an ideal 50's instrument should. The sound never gets old.

    59 American Vintage (AV) and 62 American Vintage Reissue (AVRI) were part of two different series. While the American Vintage Reissue was consistent from the 80s, the American Vintage saw just a single series from the 2012 till the substitution with American Original. The AV series was way much more accurate and almost hitting the custom shop line, while AVRI and the AO nowadays, aimed to a more generic (and friendly) vintage-vibes.

      @@jessesmith2906 prices for used AV range wildly from 1700 to 2500. 2500 is too high. They cost 2200 back in the day, so you are paying for someone making a profit out of a used instrument. Mint condition still means "used" so it's a good start to go lower than 2200. The "Mint" definition is entirely subjective and given their soft thin nitro paint you are realistically gonna see lots of mileage on a closer inspection

      Yeah I can't remember exactly what i said but basically the Am vintage 59 taper out wider as you go down the neck so at the 12th fret you notice quite a difference compared to a AVRI 62. The early AVRI 62s are even thinner. (and 65 is slightly wider still than 59)

    Thanks for the interesting video. it seems to me that the '59 AVRI Strats are just further refinements of the '57/'62 series - one with the maple board, the other with rosewood, but making the '59s closer in most ways to the vintage specs - lacquer vs. poly finish, no more tinting of the neck finish (which is why the '62 headstock looks so much more orange than the '59), corrected bridge saddles (with a larger opening), 'clay' dots, etc.. Though, I wonder how different the '59 pickups are from the '57/'62 series? Judging on your video, they sound *really* close. Fender's not really saying much about the '59 pickups (and I don't think they're selling them separately), but I have a feeling they're basically the same as the '57/'62, which after all are great pickups.
    One thing, though: the '98-and-later '62 reissues did feature a mint-green pickguard, though your own 2000 one seems more white than mint green. That's a bit of a puzzle. The pickguards on the two guitars should be pretty much identical.
    Anyway, thanks again! Really enjoyed that.

    • @stratocaster_nerd7283
      @stratocaster_nerd7283  8 лет назад

      I agree. They have slowly got more historically correct. The original 57/62 isn't particularly true to a vintage guitar in regards the neck. (Most of the other differences are pretty cosmetic. ). They got closer in 98, when they updated the 57/62 and more so now.
      I think I read in the Fender book somewhere they purposely went away from a fat neck back in the 80s because they didn't think they would sell as well.
      Yeah the pickups are pretty similar to my ear too. I imagine they voiced the 59s closest to the 62s for all the people who liked the 62. They are a LITTLE bit different though...
      Interesting about the pick guard. I seem to remember seeing that somewhere else, maybe in the specs, and wondering about my pick guard. Mine seems more parchment.

    • @stratocaster_nerd7283
      @stratocaster_nerd7283  4 года назад

      I prefer the old rounder fretboard - but its just personal opinion - feels good in the hand to me, part of the reason I like Strats over Les Pauls. By the way there's not much in it between a guitar with 7.25 and one with 9.5., sometimes I can hardly tell. As for small frets, they're fine but probably my preference is larger. Only because you can get your fingers under them easier for bends. Obviously I'm making do, I have guitars with both kinds. The only technical issue to watch is rounder radius can mean with very low action you MIGHT start to fret out on bends usually on the higher frets E and B strings. Good setup can usually fix this unless neck is warped. So test it out high bends if you can in person. Note: none of my 'small fret' guitars fret out and their action is fairly low.

    Sound cool what pick ups are in each guitar? Are these sold as sets from fender just for the pick ups

    • @stratocaster_nerd7283
      @stratocaster_nerd7283  4 года назад +1

      Yes both sets came stock with those guitars. The '59 came with a 59 set that, at the time, only came in that guitar (as each of the American vintage series Strats was being very specific about recreating a guitar faithful to that year). The 62 reissues (which pre-dated the American Vintage series) came with a set of what they call 57/62 reissue pickups that were available in both the 57 reissues and 62 reissues of the time. However you could definitely buy the 57/62 pickups separately. I still see them on eBay. And I think you could also buy the 59s separately. Both these reissue series of guitars have now been replaced by the 'American original' series which only has a 50s style guitar or a 60s style guitar . They don't get down to the specific years any more. That's I guess for the custom shop.

    • @stratocaster_nerd7283
      @stratocaster_nerd7283  2 года назад

      The American Vintage chip really easily, so there is some ageing happening, or 'relicing' which most people seem to want anyway... at least chips off like an old guitar rather than poly which comes off in big chucks, but i'm certain real vintage guitars didn't chip this easy. The 62 still looks the same. Has a beautiful dark smooth fretboard but frets very low when I bought it (used), so not sure if it was always like this with VERY vintage style frets or needs a refret. Don't have another of this series to compare to. The 59 is pretty much my favourite guitar, definitely in the looks dept anyway. (Hardly ever see them on ebay.)

      @@JoseFigarella Oh the 59 for sure. It's way closer to a true vintage guitar when it comes to the detail. And this color with faded green pickguard and clay dots, looks particularly good and has a real retro vibe to it, so its my favourite strat in the looks department. It seems very close in quality to a 1960 custom shop guitar I have and very similar neck carve. Also i just saw one on ebay a couple of days ago, same color exactly like this one, for the first time on ebay in years and they are asking twice what i bought mine for. (Around 3000 USA). But if you like thin necks the 62 is good. Back when they started making AVRI in the 80s, thin necks were popular (but not true to a real 62). They were fender's first attempt at going back to classic design after they bought back the company. But the later American Vintage model which wasnt launched till 2012 is way more refined attempt at 'vintage' in my opinion. My theory (and its only mine) is they actually dropped American Vintage because it was TOO close to Custom shop (especially in its specificity and detail of copying a particular year) and it didn't make marketing sense. Now with current Vintage range, you just get 'The 50s' or 'the 60s', much less specific, which can then leave a gap for the custom shop. By the way, the current Vintage range has a neck shape closer to the 59 rather than the 62 if you want to see what its like. .....End of ramble.
