You are the type of person the 86 deserves and was designed for. You truly appreciate the engineering and design that has gone into this car. A lot of people complain about the power, but it can be easily modded. Hope to have one of these one day and thanks to you, I have decided to get the newer revision as opposed to getting an older (albeit cheaper) one.
I just recently totaled my 2013 FRS. Some of the first mods I did to it was removing the clutch spring, swapping the diff/trans fluid Coilovers etc to increase the enjoyability because like you said the FRS was good, but rough. I test drove a 2017 Toyota 86 a couple weeks ago, and I remember looking at my girlfriend in surprise, and saying why does this car feel smoother and better to drive then my modified FRS. This car is nearly perfect from the factory now, and as crazy as it sounds I almost don’t want to modify or touch it at all. I could drive it stock and be completely content. I figured if the day came where I totaled my FRS I’d get something different, but here I am picking up my new 2017 Toyota 86 in a few days. Awesome Review, everything said is spot on 👏🏼
The GT86 seems to have a completely different and improved suspension now since the facelift. Toyota also seems to have a slightly different setup on some parts.
So I'm sure some of you are wondering how the changes to the new 86 translate to the road/driving experience. I just took delivery of a press loan yesterday. In the last 24 hours I've driven it on the street and on track at M1 Concourse...but mostly sideways around their skid pad lol. Here are my thoughts! The 2017 86 is good. Very good. I'll leave you to judge the way it looks, but what I want to go over is the driving experience, because Toyota has done some amazing engineering to the suspension. It doesn't understeer. At all. And it doesn't oversteer unless you try to make it oversteer. The car is incredibly well balanced around corners, and there is a lot more mechanical grip even on the same michelins. The revised softer dampers, sway bars, and spring rates work so well together I'd characterize this as one of the best handling cars I've driven at any price point. I couldn't say that about a stock BRZ/FR-S before this. Ride is improved, turn in is improved, mid corner adjustability is improved, grip is improved, steering is improved, I love it. Now on to power: I'd liken this new 86 to feel like a tuned BRZ/FR-S running on E85. The torque dip isn't very noticeable. But it has also been
Chris - Did this one you tested have any of the TRD options? I've watched other reviews in which they had the TRD exhaust, springs (lowering the car), sway bars, and TRD forged wheels. I really like your reviews. One thing that would put you even higher in the pack is if you stated the details about the car (as you do on your audio/visual equipment.). Keep up the great work!
I tested a 2015 FR-S with the TRD exhaust/springs/sways. It was okay, but a bit too stiff and the exhaust droned. The new 2017+ 86 and BRZs are so perfectly balanced in every regard, it'd be hard to improve on them much.
@@gtgs2563 I know. I refer you to my previous comment. What do you think, maybe pointlessly unequal length exhaust headers would do it? Maybe not - the 86 still sounds boxer-y even with equal length ones.
Just got a 2017 Toyota 86, and I love it! People who say this car is boring clearly don't drive near the edge of traction enough, which you can't do in 90% of all other rear wheel drive cars (relatively safely on the street anyway). I'm neutral when it comes to the whole 86 vs BRZ thing, but my employee discount pushed me towards the 86 :D
I got 3000 off, which apparently that's being sold at a loss for the sales guys (not Toyota), also got a free extended warranty. I'm told I got that big of a discount because my sales guy likes me, and did not mind not making any money off me. About the 86 vs brz thing, there the same car. If you want an interior with some more nice features, than the brz is your only option. If you don't care about the interior, than choose the one you think has the better front bumper.
I test the BRZ and the 86 back-to-back on the same day within an hour of each other and I have to admit the BRZ exhaust note was more noticeably louder. I ended up with 86 ,no regrets. I just can't stop looking at my car . Sexy as heck.
I like the fact he is driving it normally, and not redlining it to 100kph like every other loon seems to do with every car test. This gives me a good idea of how it sounds and pulls and what it would be like as a daily driving car, its all very nice indeed. Well done for great review
I also bought my 2017 86 on a whim, and I have had a blast over the last 8000km since driving it off the lot. A few months back I spotted a 2017 halo white 86 sitting at GM lot which caught my eye. After doing a quick search I found 3 six speed cars brand new at dealer down the road from my house. Red, Metallic grey, and black. I booked a test drive the next day and signed the paperwork by days end.
This car is so beautiful😍 I'm not really a guy that cares about the power but more about the feel of the driving and this is hands down one of the best handling in it's price range
Really enjoyed this one, I drive an 8th gen Civic Si and this car has always been appealing to me but I always just worry about the cases where I would need 4 seats every now and then when I go and visit family. You are right though, a majority of the time that isn't a problem
Very nice first impressions video. I've considered this 86 before, but now that the new GR86 is out (and these cars are a dying breed) and I absolutely love the new one, I wouldn't mind considering a second hand 86 based on this video, given that the new one will still be expensive (thank goodness there is no turbo in the new one!).
Thanks for the great impressions I’m still undecided on a 2013/2017+ model. Great to see it drive from POV and comparison impressions from a current BRZ owner of the older model.
I just imported my own 2017 GT86 Intension was to sell it but the economy turned to shite so.... My company car is now an 8000 mile grade 4.5 GT86 with full TRD quad tip exhaust and TRD SF2 rims. Tuned and well it seems very good to me. There is a sweet spot on the peedle kindof like fuel injected motorcycles, too much gas and car will bog but slow and steady and the car pull hard all the way to red line, I have no loss of torque. It's great. It actually reminds me of riding a motorcycle, keeping the engine on the boil all the time. Every home needs an 86, especially now with the price of fuel, best bang for your buck
I used to live in Windsor for a few years. Half way through your video I'm like, "I recognize that U turn!" You must be near Sommerset. Say Hi to Brad in Windsor for me
2017 Toyota 86 or 2017 Subaru BRZ? Consider availability of the performance package on the BRZ. I actually like the bolder look of the 86 front, but STI sized Brembos and Sachs dampers are a nice upgrade. The interior upgrade of the BRZ Limited can also be had in the 860 Special Edition.
My own my gripe about the new revisions is ONLY the new front bumper and the steering wheel. I love everything else. And have you seen the BRZ with the new center console with the starlink system? I LOVE IT.
Agreed. This car really is a sweet thing to drive now. I mean, the handling is perfect - driving this around the track I couldn't think of any way to improve the dynamics. Curious to see how it does with some grippy tires. And sweet, that's good to hear on the BRZ. I like the direction Subaru has taken it. Hopefully the suspension is as good as the 86 though. Gotta get a loan on one soon this spring!
Find yourself an FRS front bumper, I think it should still fit. Correct me if I'm wrong, at least by the look of things the headlights still share the same contour.

@TheTopher please! Can you make a comparison video between this and your mk6 GTI? I have a 2006 audi A3 (basically a mk5 GTI), and I like the car. It's very comfortable, classy, and pretty fast with a its stage 2 tune, but I find myself craving a light weight, NA, rear wheel drive car. FatalFist ive only driven the old version as a manual. they didnt have the new one as a manual to test drive, but the old one was fairly easy to rev match while downshifting. just a little blip of throttle and you're good to go
That's interesting that at 3250 the 86 is sitting at 70. I have a 2002 vw gti vr6 and at 3200 (the vr6 has a torque sweet spot and it's at 3200) but the car is at 80mph at 3200, so 70 falls just under 3000.
