- This is a tutorial on testing car stereos from a novice's perspective. I am not an expert on stereo/audio equipment. I must ask that you not try this at home without the proper experience or tools and with consideration of all necessary safety measures. I have included the parts I purchased below to do this test. Please note that there are other options available. I have no affiliation with the links below.

Lol idk how tf I looked up this topic and the best video on it is you and you are using the exact same one I have that I want to sell
Very helpful. I just bought 15 car radios for $25 at a garage sale, hoping they work. Definitely using the methods you showed here to try and test them.
Glad it helped. You may have to find different power cords now as I don't know if my links are still available, but this helped me test all my radios for the most part.
I look at these old factory stereos and think damn one day a song came on on that thing and a lot of us would turn it up and enjoy it, not worrying about anything other than an 8 track, cassette, cd, whatever we had in our cars, many of us didnt know we'd be using that stereo for the last time, now the radio today in itself is trash at least where I live, everything's quickly going out of date and everyone has more control over their music in their car with their phones than anything, but it's great that there are people keeping the good ones in check and reselling them if anyone ever decides to go back to factory to keep the car original!
THANK YOU!!! I can’t thank you enough, this is extremely helpful!!! I especially appreciate that you used radios with issues for testing so that you can show us what to expect!!! Very thoughtful, super excellent thorough job!!! Thanks again!!! :)
You are very welcome. It was a long time coming, but I was waiting on the second wiring harness and then had to find time to test. I decided to keep the ones with issues because I figured it was always good to show the realistic side of the business. I also think I fixed the Ford one, but the video was already made. Appreciate the feedback. I just updated the description with all of the items used.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing with us!
Thank you for watching!
I never test the radios and I sell many, and I've never had issues. I look for radios that are VERY clean as that usually indicates the factory radio was swapped out for an aftermarket. This often happens and the radio just sits on a shelf for years. Sometimes people buy them just to put in a vehicle they're selling as they take their aftermarket radio with them.
Thanks for the video! Very helpful. But what do you do if there's no black wire from the harness? The bag the harness came in says "when there is no black wire present, ground radio to the vehicle chassis." Just like you, I'm testing this without a car. I'm not sure what to do here!
This can end up costing you some time! I ordered a harness for a different radio and it doesn't fit. It's just slightly too big and the eBayer is giving me a hard time as I say it's a defective part and they're saying I ordered the wrong part (I didn't). That was after I ordered the wrong harness...one for upgrading your radio. I didn't realize you need a "reverse" harness. And now one with no black wire! So it's been a couple weeks and I still haven't been able to test anything yet!
i have a mercedes radio i'm trying to test. what plug would i need for this radio? i checked the plugs you listed but they may not work.
Thanks!
You bet!
Awesome video! Can you link the items you bought to test the radios? Thanks so much!
I just updated the description of the video. Can you check to see if they work? let me know if not.
What about going to a stereo shop and have them test it for a fee? Have you tried that before?
Great minds think alike. After the fact I thought about that. I ran into one issue. One shop wanted to charge for a diagnostic test if I wasn't planning to use them for an installation. The other shop just advised me they did not have the time to test old radios. In some areas, you might not have this issue though.

I will attempt to go to stereo shop's on slow hours maybe I can work something out.
i have a 2014 Ram Radio that i cant bench test cause they use something called a canBus. that make it impossible to run a regular bench test any suggestion?
I went to my mechanic and he got a buddy of his to test out two radios I bought. Cost me $20 in total but I was able to sell the radios for twice the price of others who had them listed as Untested.
There is no legal issue with unlocking a radio. It's yours.
The issue arises out of a lot of radios being stolen from other vehicles and the code triggers. Obviously, if you own the radio or acquire it used legitimately it is not an issue. The comment is to address the ones that are potentially stolen.
I ordered the wiring harness from eBay but it does not have the red wire will this work with only the black and yellow wire?
Red means 12v power from ignitipn . Black is ground. Yellow means 12v power from battery. According to google.
Great video enough with the blah blah blah blah blah geez.... okay you're not liable ...once was enough!!
Did he forget to mention that he's not a professional? I think he did forget to tell you that he's not a professional. So I'll say it for him since he forgot. He is not a professional. Use these methods to test car stereos at your own risk and do not take anything he said in video as authoritative information because he is not a professional and only has Street credentials.
