@@fromthedeskofprofessorskye As a long-time Dr. Egg enjoyer I actually think that nowadays his fans are somewhat more reasonable and mature than even a few years ago.
Him moving away from his political content towards content oriented more towards mental health and broader cultural phenomena has let to many insufferable "edgy" people becoming disinterested in him.
This led to the people following him more approximating the type of people that did beforehand.
While the spectrum of people following him still is more politicised than previously, they are not the kind of compulsively and terminally LARPing political "activists" so to speak.
His followers nowadays still have kind of bloated egos and believe themselves to be more disruptive than they really are, but the straight up delusional ones kind of disappeared.

His consistent messages with everything he puts out is that it’s ok for one mind to contain multitudes, frameworks provide a sense of direction to the philosophically disoriented , ideologies provide different lenses to perceive any given context through; while no lense is perfect, what matters is that for now you can see, extremism fixates on an absolute destination & snaps at anything that even slightly implies an alternative coarse of collective consciousness. His content is about how no matter what u believe or how u define morality, so long as u define it & ppl know where you stand; you’ll earn more respect from others than the millions of online quacks who dismiss frameworks as arbitrary while preferring to identify as an amorphous blob that’s important to criticize or pin down.
In short, even if you’re fairly reasonable and fundamentally a good person, those positive traits don’t stop anyone from becoming ignorant. But constantly underestimating your opposition? Conflating everyone u beef with as ‘basically the same’ Even when not all of those entities like each other? Getting mad at political theories with more perspective ways of looking at something beyond “Good Bad Neutral” or “rep. Dem. And fictional ppl in the middle” “🔵🟣🔴”?
That’s ignorant, petty & self destructive. You could be a saint in every other regard but all the while, malicious masterminds already know how to Divide & Conquer, radicalize zealots, poison the well & parasocially influence the more down to earth ppl around you into contrarianism so everything that should cause alarm is downplayed while your well founded fears and silent panicking suddenly comes off as unstable ramblings incapable of differentiating one threat from another because “bad is bad why look further into it?”
To know the lay of the land is to have a compass or map of some kind in the most uncertain times.

I love how he covers political online culture in an ironic or meta ironic-sounding way for archival history. Jreg can say he's a feudalist with a serious intent and I can never tell if he's joking or not.
Also, I think Vaush is judging an online audience watching Jreg. He assumes most people will never understand meta-ironic jokes if issues that are politicial is close to home. It's like how conservatives always misinterpret MLK's I Have A Dream speech and Orwell's 1984 message.

    • @dffgffffffdddddddddd
      @dffgffffffdddddddddd 2 года назад +7

Exactly, your audience will always be more extreme than you, if you're a content creator. If I made an "ironic" racist channel today, my audience would mostly be racist people, not people who are also being "ironic". But, after a certain point it's basically the same as just being racist.

I know this is two years late and nobody will likely see this, but I got frustrated and wanted to express why. While I appreciate a lot of your analysis (I agree that JREG is fundamentally humanist and anti-tribalist/anti-atomization AND I agree that his works are very valuable and enlightening), I think you miss the mark when it comes to your personal conclusion about how people age politically. Specifically, your conclusion that, in 20 years, you'll have a white-collar job and be a moderate liberal/conservative tax payer - that just isn't true for everyone. It can't be. Millions of people in America alone do not and will never have the opportunity to be average white-collar liberal/conservative worker bees living a cushy life and benefitting from the status-quo. They will work underpaid service jobs or do hard labor that destroys their bodies. They'll get treated like human trash and abused by a system that sees them as an expendable resource. And it seems to me that these are the people most susceptible to tribalism and extremism. For good reason too, because the status quo is actively harming them. This is coming from someone who currently would love to get a college degree but is already deeply in debt and has to work full time just to keep the lights on. I would LOVE to be a bourgeois pig. But I, like many others, have no choice. And I'm relatively lucky, I at least have a roof over my head and mostly avoid going hungry.
I dunno man, I try my best to be a humanist, to avoid grabbing labels and picking a side to commit to, because, like you've mentioned, it doesn't do us any good. It drives a wedge between humans who all just want the same thing. And if it could really work out the way you said, I would love that. But it can't for everyone and it really frustrates me when people from a clearly comfortable and privileged situation talk so confidently about how their life path is the universal truth. You may have been comfortable enough to become a centrist/humanist/anti-extremist/whatever. Many will not be so lucky. Comfort is not a universal truth.

agreed, i just finished this less than a day after you and really didnt enjoy it after looking back on it. I actually also am not inclined to believe jreg is what skye concludes, i am very familiar with meta irony on the internet, its mostly used in relation to politics to muddy to waters and advance agenda via the "irony" of it all. i find it more right wing honestly and not really humanist at all.

    • @fraxes1372
      @fraxes1372 9 месяцев назад +3

That's totally fair. I've definitely seen a lot of "irony" used as a shield to obfuscate harmful views and dogwhistle to other extremists while keeping plausible deniability for those not in the know. Irony and meta-irony aren't uniquely special, they're just tools that are now often used by assholes. The reason why I was comfortable agreeing that JREG is humanist is because I was just introduced to him and his recent videos, specifically the one about irony poisoning, make it seem pretty clear that he thinks real world community building is one of the most valuable things people can do, which I think is a good message and humanist at it's core. But I don't know the dude and still haven't seen quite a bit of his work so that's definitely not a hill I'm willing to die on.

JREG makes a very strong argument against this very notion on the horseshoe theory channel, saying that this change (extreme to moderate with age) was true in the past but will not be true from now on - and he gives substance to the claim, by sugesting that the structure that made people more moderate (available white collar jobs and quality of life) is evaporating. If you analise who are the most extreme people nowadays (at least to the right) you will se that it isn't the young people, but the old - a lot of old nazis laying around -, and that also suggests that things are changing nowadays

Interesting analysis of Jreg, but there are certain videos which I feel like he somewhat attempts to influence the nature of political discourse and politics in general. Recently, he started a “post-ironic” mayoral campaign in Ottowa and I am quite interested in your thoughts on that. Does he believe in accelerationism? Does he truly want radical changes to Ottowa? Or is he attacking both the centrists and the extremists as you have said? There are instances where I feel that the ambiguity of his content doesn’t necessarily discourage tribalism. At the end of the day, I do agree that Jreg is an important youtuber in today’s climate and I hope more people would look into his influence.

    I don't think I buy that point.
Revolutions obviously still happen in other parts of the world (arabian spring, Iran etc etc) so who's to say they can't happen here anymore?
Maybe it just needs some more instability - some more hundreds of millions climate refugees demanding they're human rights, one European country (or the US) going full fascist again...
I don't want that kind of revolution btw.

Good video. While I appreciate its (sometimes) noble cause, it does worry me that meta-ironic "shitposting" is becoming one of the main humanistic ways of interacting with politics. I wouldn't doubt there are more people in Jreg's community that just see his ambiguity as passively accepting of their (often far right) ideologies rather than truly understand what he cares to present - especially considering it seems like a highly online/young fanbase. It's not just south parkin' it, it almost feels like exploring the post-truth zeitgeist in any meaningful way inevitably ends up adding more noise to it.
Not to say any of this is Jreg's fault or that ideological polarization is purely a product of the social media era. I'm just worried the next generations will grow up more and more nihilistic. They may stop playing with countryballs as they get older but they might always remain detached from their real-world communities, politics and material conditions. As a socialist who is very aware that 99% of the type of shit ppl read and watch online as content is a world apart from a conversation with an actual person/scholar/worker, it's a very frustrating dilemma. I want ppl to be more informed, you gotta believe in something to be someone, to change the world. But it feels like the most likely scenarios are you'll either end up hate-motivated and seeing the opposition not as fellow workers but as enemies, or not care at all.
Or this could've all just been a purposefully confusing slop of text. It's just meant to make you think bro, i don't even know what zeigeist means lololol every middle-class person settles into a nimby liberal is the only true ending

I don't find irony to be the most interesting thing about JREG. It is a big part of his work to be sure, but I want to point out how much more there is to him.
He has a video where he just chants "tax the undeveloped value of land" over and over again. Which is a reference to Georgism(not exactly a well-known political ideology.) In another video he says "as Marx once said Cthulhu may swim slowly but he always swims left" which is actually a mencius moldbug quote.
He has a video that pretends to be, on the surface, about the relationship between gender identity and political ideology but is actually about Nick Lands concepts of accelerationism.
In another he cites Ted Kaczysnki when criticizing Adderall abuse.
He normalizes all kinds of divergent and unique political thought. Anyone who takes the time to try and understand JREG by googling some of the references he makes will find themselves accidentally learning about political theory.
And not just any political theory, but the political theory that is the most creative and far away from the status quo.
I think what JREG wants is ultimately a more creative attitude towards politics, one that frees us up to be centrist or extremist, far right, far left, critics of technology, embraces of technology.
When he speaks about a political ideology he does so in a more concise and straightforward way than anyone else and in so doing makes every political idea no matter how extreme more accessible to the general public

I see the meme the same way you do, except more of a bass-boosted E, as in EA sports ytps. However, someone who doesn't have either of our experiences but who understands the fact the meme is a blank canvas and is meant to be absurd will be able to pin their own interpretation on the meme. I can't beleive im saying this unironically but it's kind of what modern art wants to be, it's not telling you to think a certain way, not trying to sell you on anything. Instead it's just asking you to take a moment to reflect

I think of Vaush's video on Jreg often so this was a good analysis of that. The humanist vs extremist stuff reminds me of Mr Girl's recent discussion with Vaush and subsequently Destiny (where he goes into his point a bit more).

    What a video!
On the note of irony, I’d love to hear what your thoughts are on Helge Schneider. Not as political as jReg, more dadaist and goofy, Helge is such an multi layered artist to study. Most of his music is in German, but he does a few in English too, such as „Dance to the music“
His most well known song would be „Katzeklo“, I’m pretty sure there’s even a translation for that. Other ones to get into his stuff would be „Texas“ and „Es gibt Reis, Baby“ (Translation available too)
    Have a terrible day!!

I find this interesting but one thing I would say is that we don't all become bourgeoisie pigs: some of us just stay poor, via a combination of moral choice against our own self-interest and the miserly disapproval of the Fates. That is the story of my parents and every generation of my family before me. Expect it will be the case for me. I am always going to be a prole not posh enough to know how to spell the other word without looking it up. I am only 24 years old but all 24 of them were spent in enough poverty to be able to know how foolish the rich are. I have few choices that are real choices, and the ones I have are not done lightly because that's something only wealthy fools can do. If your great grandparents were digging coal, being apolitical is not an option. Being anything other than extremist is not an option for those who are faced with extreme inequalities. That is why hbomberguy is what he is: because he is Northern English. I think it would be very hard for me to become any kind of real ruling class person considering the vast barriers that prejudice related to class disability and queerness put in my way. This is the reason why ok boomer is a phrase among the zoomers: we don't mean poor boomers who conduct themselves with any sense of humility to us younger folk.
Vows of poverty existed long before any of these modern frameworks happened. They will exist long after as long as the poor are here.

This story is 100% true. It is not ironic, post-ironic, or meta-ironic at all. I know a man with three balls. We met on Bumble. I'm straight, but I was very lonely, and with an addiction to p0rn came some rather unusual things, such as futa, which I used as my mental excuse to say "maybe I actually do like guys". One day when I was fondling him, I noticed something strange and asked, "do... do you have three balls?" He said yes, and showed me one of them lights up when you put a flashlight under it. He says the doctor said it was just some sac of fluid that had somehow formed, but it was benign.
I have been a real hit with gay guys, and have been asked out several times by them, and it makes me wonder if women might like me too, because I'm straight. I'm quite happy with how I look, but I'm really not a fan of how just walking up to somebody and asking for their number affects our minds. I think the reason that's so hard to do is because we're not supposed to. Humans have been around for 300,000 years and have only seen evidence of agriculture around 10,000 years ago. This means until then communities sizes were capped by their ability to hunt and gather. Estimates of their sizes are about 100 on average. If we assume about half of those are men and half women, that cuts your options to 50. If we assume half of those are about your age, that cuts us to 25. If we assume half of those people you are attracted to (men is higher than half women is less than half) that cuts you to about 12. You are designed/evolved to have 12 options for dating. You are meant to mask your true intentions when probing and learning about someone to see if they'd be a good mate for you, and hide if you ended up with someone who you didn't first consider, to save face with everyone in the tribe, but especially the spouse you end up with.

I know how the world is, you can talk with a friend at a bar about extreme leftist political views but at the end of the night you have to go home, wake up the next day, go to work, pay taxes, get groceries, eat the groceries and shit the groceries (I like how the fact that we all humans have to defecate somehow creates a sense of belonging, the capital has eroded everything except for the fact that we all have to still sit on the toilet and pass some feces).

I am unironically anti-centralist and honestly think that is a rational position, let me elaborate.
The economic spectrum ranges from tribes freely sharing their resources and the products on their labour without any currency to complete economic libertarianism where everything is private property and wealth concentrating is the entire point.
The social spectrum ranges from anarchy where people can do anything they want to totalitarianism where the state has complete control over what you can do from chewing gum to being allowed to live.
The political representation ranges from anarchy to hereditary monarchy.
Given this range I think the vast majority of people that call themselves "centrist" are not centrists at all, they simply only operate within the Overton window and see points they like and dislike on both sides of the window.

I feel like near the end ur tryna be more critical of him than you feel the need to be compared to how you’ve addressed him most of the video. I say this because all of these “Xy spectrum bad” videos (containing a random salty jab at “Jay Reg” [it’s pronounced Dreg]around the 10 minute mark of each one) have been popping upthis year. And every time it’s a video by the same very specific 🌽 type 🍞 of content creators all tryna conflate authoritarian & libertarian in a way that invalidates all criticism with “I’m not a Tankie that’s just a liberal nazi dog whistle & everyone I dislike is a naziiii ESPECIALLY THOSE FUCKING ANARCHO-TWAT WAFFLES who have the fucking AUDACITY to clarify when I Selectively edit their words out of context instead of just conforming my own personal standards and allowing me to dictate which creators they do & do not associate with or else the massive support they received from my community will become overwhelming ridicule & obsessive hatred overtime”
And they all seem to be very uncomfortable with the way Jreg goes from sounding exactly like them at one moment, to validating every other perspective the next. Stripping away that main character syndrome any 21st century consumer knows all too well. It’s scary ngl but still. I wanna chat with u sometime.
