- This brand new gaming PC is in my repair shop because it keeps crashing with a BSOD. Turns out the computer has a bad stick of RAM. Troubleshooting your tech may be intimidating but it isn't difficult, and this customer could have fixed their own gaming desktop themselves at home and saved some money. The process of elimination is a critical skill to have with your technology, from a car to a laptop!

That misplugged EPS connector actually should work perfectly well.
Even if you plug only half of the 4+4 connector then it still can carry more than enough current for this measly CPU that can be cooled with a measly stock cooler.
It was probably not misplugged but on purpose. If the PSU provides 2 4pin connectors they cant just be put next to each other in the 8pin socket, but it works the way it was done here for at least 3 12V pins (which could be better than just the 2 youd get from one 4 pin connector)

*This is why you don't cheap out on RAM*
I did, and it works fine... too bad the CyperPowerPC "technician" installed my power supply upside-down, so that's not fine.
You can cheap out on ram, the only thing you dont want to cheap out is psu and memory storage. Always buy the best psu and SSD/HDD you can find....
@@ChimeraX0401not me cheaping out on only the psu 😭
Literally using a $50 psu for the past 2 years
You can cheap out on RAM as long as your time isn't valuable to you. If you buy cheap RAM it has about an 80% chance that'll work just fine, however the other 20% of the time you'll get a broken stick that needs to be RMA'd. Usually you'll have to wait 1-4 weeks to get a replacement stick. If you don't mind waiting the extra weeks for a replacement, buying cheap RAM is fine.
RAM is the main thing you can cheap out on. It's never going to take the whole system with it when it dies and it's usually a quick and easy replacement if it fails.
Also, teamgroup do actually make decent ram. I guess not their budget line though...
the greatest mistake thats ever did

I'm surprised it can even turn on with the power connector like that.
Me too, I'm sure someone smarter than me can tell us why
@@SalemTechsperts its your apple m.2 guy here to remind everyone that CPU power ports are built with more power in mind than the cpu needs in order to overclock it so if you're just booting it than 6 pins wont kill an 8 pin connector. just dont try to put it under load or it might blow up
That looks like additional CPU power, it still gets some power from the motherboard. (Enough to boot and such)
That system knows how to live with minimal resources.
Most MBs only need the extra powerdraw if you overclock or are using a specialized CPU (eg: one with a lot of cores that has a higher power draw minimum than a less powerful cpu, such as a Ryzen 5950X vs a 3600. Also just booting Windows or BIOS doesn't require much power, if you were to run a heavy workload though (compile Google Chrome with gcc) it might not work. A lot of CPUs only require 4 pins of power, not all 8.

The “just because it fits in the hole doesn’t mean it belongs there.” Wise words
Haven't gotten these in a while. Good to see them back in my feed.
NO ONE GONNA TALK ABOUT THE MOTHERBOARD POWER SOMEHOW WORKING EVEN THO IT'S THE WRONG CABLE?
Absolutely wild right?
If I recall right that power port is just four +12volt and four grounds. The redundancy is there so CPUs can get more current if they need it. Clearly this one could boot just fine without all four pairs of pins being connected.
@@SalemTechspertsno that's the CPU power smh
That is not the power for the motherboard but an 8pin cpu power socket. Not all ATX PSU have such an 8 pin connector, in particular if they are older. Have of these pins are 12V, other half is ground. The reason to have mor pins is to provide higher wattage for more energy hungry cpus or for overclocking. If the cpu isnt a wattage monster, often just one 4 pin connector in the 8 pin socket works as well. The connectors and sockets are designed in a way you basically cant plug it wrong, thats why the second 4 pin connector didnt directly fit beneath, however 2 of the pins (one 12V and one ground) did fit, creative solution and 6 is a good compromise between 4 and 8. I don't think it is a bad solution. If the techspert didnt exchange the whole psu, or maybe just used a 4pin to 8-pin adapter which looks nicer on the board but in the end the same current goes through each of the psu-4pin-connector pins. Or some other fancy adapter to utilize other 12v pins of the psu.
No, because that's normal. As said above, it doesn't matter as long as you've got the 4pin connector on the right plugged in.
The left four are also +12v on top and GND on the bottom and aren't usually needed for most CPUs to operate. The motherboard didn't give a damn about that socket.
