  • As it can be really expensive to get from Central London to Heathrow Airport, we've always wanted to try and see if using the Bus Hopper (unlimited buses for 70 minutes) you can get all the way to Heathrow from Zone 1 for just £1.50
I caught up with London Bus Savant, Hugo as we tried to see if was possible to get from Zone 1 to Heathrow ... for just £1.50
How Many Buses Can You Take In An Hour: • How Many Buses Can You...
Heathrow Express fare (from Paddington) ... £22.00
TfL Rail fare (from Paddington) ... £10.10 (off peak), £10.20 (peak)
Underground fare (from Zone 1) ... £3.10 (off peak), £5.10 (peak)

You actually get to see more of London on a bus, especially the scenery on the upper deck when a bus crosses the Thames is very nice. If you want to go on an "experience London" tour on a normal bus (and avoiding all the traffic), I highly recommend doing it on a Sunday morning. Easy-grab top-deck front seats, speeding through central London. It's just awesome!

It's possible to take a 405 bus from Redhill to West Croydon, then change to an X26 for Heathrow Airport in less than an hour if it can be timed right. That's one hell of a distance for just £1.50.

If you did this on a non-rugby day you would most likely have made it as you wouldn't have been held up heading into Richmond.

If you could prove a particular bus didn't turn up, could you not claim the difference back because it wasn't your fault that you were unable to complete the trip for £1.50?
Similar scenario to say if you have an off peak only ticket, but a bus turns up late so you end up boarding it in peak hour, the off peak ticket should still be valid because you should have been able to get a bus on your original ticket.

Only 60mins is guarateed, and I think for oyster delay repay for bus is a half hour delay and you can claim one £1.50 fare back (not many routes where a half hour delay attributable to the bus operator occurs. For me I had a problem where a 20min frequency route one ran 2 min early leaving a 22min gap and I had to take the tube. could not be bothered to argue with the helpline.

190 is by far the most direct of the three routes between Hammersmith and Richmond (you didn't mention the 33) In reverse the first trick is not to touch in until you leave the Heathrow Freezone at Harlington Corner. Currently, I think the nearest bus to Heathrow that goes in to Zone 1 is the 27 at Turnham Green, and you should be able to get from Harlington Corner to Turnham Green in less than an hour. (H98, followed by H91). But this will not be possible for much longer, as route 27 is to be shortened and will start at Hammersmith from early next year. (EDIT the 70 also goes from Turnham Green to Zone 1, albeit by a more circuitous route - which doesn't matter as it's the last leg).

Then switch to the 190 to Richmond (a 43 minute journey) and then finally get on the 490 to Heathrow Terminal 4 (a 52 minute journey). Interestingly while Zone 1 to Heathrow is almost definitely possible, going the other way from Heathrow to Zone 1 would probably be much harder. Because going back the other way the 490 journey would be far too long, if it is possible you’d need a completely different route to what you used getting there.

It didnt matter if I had a delay at the high street as long as I got on the bus before the 70-minute mark. The bus into central took an hour but I didn't mind with it being cheaper than the tube. That was the same trip I went from Uxbridge to Greenwich via train missing out zone 1 to have a cheaper fair.

So, I suppose a good question to ask then would be: Where is furthest that you can get to Heathrow via the bus hopper. I'm fairly certain that if you begin at Hammersmith the journey for £1.50 is easily accomplished. It would also be interesting to know the max distance (to anywhere) and not just base on fare zones as well. I know that I can make it from Hammersmith to Slough (17.1mi) for £1.50 as I've done that journey a couple of times!

I had a feeling that when your stopwatch was at like 01:09:55, a 490 would appear...

  • @LeeSmith-cf1vo
    @LeeSmith-cf1vo 5 лет назад +41

that the limit is 70 mins and not 60 is quite interesting to me. I had ruled out using the hopper for my commute because the 2 buses required are both just over 1hr.
But Maybe its possible to make that connection for £1.50 after all!

@Johnny Ericsson thats totally possible. thats not what your initial comment implied though. instead you're taking as gospel whatever some guy in a youtube video said and are now getting verbally abusive towards a person who dared to check tfl's official ruling on the matter.

I commute on the 490 everyday and it is one unreliable service, it isn't uncommon to wait up to 40minutes for the next bus. Waiting for a bus that should arrive at 4am for it to be delayed by 40 minutes on a cold winters day is not fun. Also bare in mind the Heathrow free travel zone means going to T3 instead of T5 and getting a connection is a viable option. The best route in my opinion would of been to get any bus from Hammersmith that goes via Hounslow bus station and change there for Heathrow.
I'm glad there is a video out here showing how bad the service of the 490 is, I thought it was just me who was suffering.
The comments suggesting you should be carrying luggage I agree to with however a lot of staff and pasengers going for day/2day trips carry minimal luggage so this could be useful.

On another note you could just get the Piccadilly line from Earls Court (just walk it from High Street Kensington) to any Heathrow Terminal for £1.50 off peak (or £1 with a railcard added to a oyster)

Interesting you started at High Street Kensington, in earlier times from Cromwell Road (West Kensington Air Terminal) a BEA Short front entrance Routemaster would have taken you to London Airport. ( BOAC ran Atlanteans from Victoria Air Terminal ). and earlier to that BEA One and Half Deck Regal IVs ran in the main from South Bank Air Terminal (near the festival hall). Then for a price came Airbus services (M Class Metrobuses). But you only need to get to say, Hatton Cross as from there the Heathrow Free Zone applies, so is that do-able. Anyway 94 From Lancaster Gate(Or Bayswater Road Queensway) if you prefer) - Shepherds Bush - Walk To Uxbridge Road for 607 To Hayes, Grapes, Then 140 To LHR. You might just be able to do Queensway to Hayes in 60mins, early mornings. Or you could try 105 from Southall, the 482 from Southall is every 20mins so check interchange times but you can have fun on it going to Hatton Cross then using the non TfL route 555 on the Free Heathrow section into Heathrow - then go free back in the 482 via the Cargo Terminal. You might also be quicker starting from South Kensington rather than High Street Ken.

That's a great challenge. I have thought of a ridiculous challenge myself, that would take ages, involving getting local regular scheduled route buses from london to John O'Groats. No pre booking of any kind allowed, after looking on google maps, i can see that you can get up to the midlands, but then it gets a bit confusing. It would be a great challenge that id love to try one day.
